Fun facts: The Led Zeppelin lyric "Going To California with an aching in my heart, Someone told me there's a girl out there, With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair" is about Joni. The Crosby Stills Nash & Young song "Our House" is the Laurel Canyon house that Graham Nash and her shared, and was where Led Zeppelin was heading. Dylan's "Tangled up in Blue" is about listening to Joni's "Blue" album. She really did stoke the star making machinery!
Great comment and I was going to mention the same. I love the live version of Going to California by Zeppelin where they call Joni out by name. How many brilliant musicians has she inspired, most incredible talent. I live in the Canadian prairie city where Joni grew up 🇨🇦. My kids were all born here and they feel that tremendous connection to her music created 30-40 years before they were born. My daughter is 12 (Joni is actually her favourite singer) and next year will be attending the same high school Joni went to. What an amazing legacy Joni Mitchell has gifted to us. Thank you Jamel for highlighting one of the most influential singer songwriters of all time. 💙

hi - Joni's from the Canadian prairies and her whole thing reflects growing up in the wide open spaces. she used to lie in the tall grasses and watch the clouds. she started singing in little family pancake restaurants. This woman has so many great albums. Her lyrics are rich and clever, but cut deep. She is the ultimate singer-songwriter, and not just in my opinion. She was voted one of the top 100 guitarists by Rolling Stone. Her and Prince were friends and mutual admirers. When you get a chance, please react to All I Want, The Same Situation, Black Crow & Be Cool (studio versions)! I shared your Help Me video. I just couldn't believe that someone was reacting to Joni!
There’s a live performance of Amelia recorded, I think, at the Hollywood bowl. Her songwriting gift is evident in studio recordings but live you get a sense of her incredible musicianship.
This is true but back then, there was no youtube or MTV. Our collective experiences were, in chronological order, the studio recordings. That's why they are iconic. We discovered her, experienced her, watched her grow, and are now standing watch for her demise. We have lived our lives with her words and life lessons. She is more than just a singer-songwriter. Just my opinion, but live is for after hearing the original. I don't know, but it disturbs my sense of order to "Put the cart before the horse". You just can't rush these things....Of course there are exceptions the rule. Amelia may very well be one of them! My exception is: Sex Kills (live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno). You can really see how she trances out and the unique strumming and picking of her guitar. How the audience falls under her spell even though it's not a thumping hit song. Magical Songstress!
I love this song so much. And then I listen to the lyrics, and I end up in tears... "They took all the trees, and put 'em in a tree museum. Then they charged the people a dollar and a half just to see them." "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone." So true about EVERYTHING. Another GREAT!!! Canadian singer from Alberta had the luck to meet her a few years ago at a house party where she performed a couple songs even though she was going through some health problems.
Jamel, Joni and James Taylor did a great duet and rendition of James' song, "You Can Close Your Eyes" which is so striking and beautiful! Please take a listen of that!
She was born in 1943, and would therefore have turned 20 in 1963. How could she perform the song "Woodstock" in 1963 when the Woodstock festival was in 1969?
James Taylor, please! He's so amazing and he and Joni were an item for awhile. I believe he was in one of the pictures on this video. She was also Stephen Stills girlfriend. She was probably in her 20s. She sang this in 1970. She is 77 now, so what does that make her in 1970? She was 27... But please, JT! He's the best. Singer Songwriter, was discovered by The Beatles. Great reaction to Big Yellow Taxi! :)
I am probably the millionth person to say she wrote Woodstock made famous by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young but here goes. She wrote Woodstock, you know.
This got played to death when it came out back in the day, but none of us cared at all, we were happy to listen. Love this song! 'They pave paradise/put up a parkin' lot'. She was 26 when this came out in 1970.
The most different version you'll ever hear is by a Russian-Canadian in 1980 called BB Gabor. It was on Rush's Anthem label, and well worth checking out. (Also, R.I.P. BB!)

So glad you saw this, seeing a Free man in Paris coming.. I can't wait... Yes . this is Joni Mitchell... Jimmy hendrix used to go and record her intimate concerts...amazing subtle guitar chord transitions.
Joni came from small town western Canada. She wrote "Woodstock" performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - She missed her flight to go to Woodstock to perform her own song so her friends did. Few women at the time had such notable collaborators.

It was a sampled from this track by dj Q-tip (from A Tribe Called Quest.)
Right on! I didn’t know that.
@@tanyafralick1866 Q-tip is a big Joni fan. He raps about her a bit in this Janet Jackson track too..
Janet, Joni and Q-Tip. Recipe for success

I knew that you would love her, thank you so much for your reactions and listening to the awesome music of Joni!
Counting Crows made a cover of it and it was re-introduced back to younger audience.
I am so very glad you started listening to Joni 💜💜 This song was a hit for her. I remember hearing it on the radio in the early 70s.
Check out "Woodstock," the live London version which she wrote and performed when she was about 20 years old.
She was born in 1943, and would therefore have turned 20 in 1963. How could she perform the song "Woodstock" in 1963 when the Woodstock festival was in 1969?
Boy, does this song take me back. I had just moved to California when I first heard her sing "California." Oh, to be young again.
Just imagine Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and Bob Dylan being in the same room....it happened...Joni and Gordon are two of Canada’s finest artists!
Thankfully the world will forever know this fantastic human.
She was 27 when this song was released.
crazy to think cuz she turned 77 today... so 50 years ago
She's playing guitar there too. She WAS young, probably 20 something. She just turned 77 November, 2020.
Love Joni, also try listening to "The Circle Game" and "Both Sides Now"
The Circle Game brings a tear every time I hear it. Love that song.
As great as Joni is one both of these songs, I love Tom Rush's version of "The Circle Game" and Judy Collin's version of "Both Sides Now".
Happy Birthday Joni !.... you Goddess of the Song...... i know you would love this Jamel
She would have been about 26 years old, then -- back when we didn't trust anyone over 30. 🤣
The establishment. 😉
I was 26 then, too, but didn't trust anyone under 30...quickly morphed into 40!! This must have been close to Laurel Cyn days and Graham Nash?
Some of us still don't...including myself!
Agreed. Any now we know WHY. :D
@@meyerweinstock9567 I'll be happy to include you! So...that's two and counting.
She is pure genius.
I don't know about Stills, but she certainly hooked up with Crosby and Nash. Nash's song "Our House" was about Joni.
Stills hooked up with Judy Collins AND Joni Mitchell? Talk about conspicuous consumption!
Today was Joni's 77'th birthday.
I think Stills was with Sweet Judy Blue Eyes Collins.
@@TheDivayenta I know that he was when he wrote the song Our House.
this was a song I loved and still do. Your reaction was off the chain. thank you Jamel for the memory and your reaction.
Counting Crows did this a few years ago, with Vanessa Carlton.
I love it at the end when she laughs. Pure joy.
I am probably the millionth person to say she wrote Woodstock made famous by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young but here goes. She wrote Woodstock, you know.
I Absolutely Love Her Voice - Go Joni!
I suspect you'd enjoy "Raised on Robbery" and "Trouble Child" by her, as well.
This got played to death when it came out back in the day, but none of us cared at all, we were happy to listen. Love this song! 'They pave paradise/put up a parkin' lot'.
She was 26 when this came out in 1970.
Lots of folks have covered this. Counting Crows has a great version.
So does Amy Grant
Janet Jackson has a great sample, too.
Yes counting crows has a great cover of this song. Please check out the Joni Mitchell tribute featuring Wynonna, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter.
The most different version you'll ever hear is by a Russian-Canadian in 1980 called BB Gabor. It was on Rush's Anthem label, and well worth checking out.
(Also, R.I.P. BB!)
Counting Crows cover of this is one of the worst songs ever put to record.
She is so beautiful and sincere she always makes me cry
Been waiting for you to get back to 70s reviews. Atlanta Rhythm Section, Poco, Babys, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Christie, etc...
Jamel, many have covered RIVER by Joni...you will love it just thinking about this song...makes want to "skate away" to another place in time!!
Adore 💛 your reactions. You are where I go for a break in life!!
Joni is a serious heavy hitter she's listed by a lot of musicians as a big influence
Your delight in the music makes me smile! Enjoy!
I always love the laugh at the end of this song - she is having so much fun singing it.
She sounds young because she was young. Most of the greats you react to were just kids when they did this stuff.
Your reaction makes me smile, Jamal. Always loved this song - 70s is where it's at! Happy birthday dear Joni ❤
Now that's what I call a protestsong, She already saw back then what we are doing to the environment.
Love your reactions, Jamal!
An iconic song by a legend.
Amy Grant had hit with a cover of this song. Stick with Joni
Joni Mitchell is a true Canadian legend, that's for sure! Speaking of Canadian music, I would LOVE to see you react to some music by The Tragically Hip. I recommend 38 Years Old, New Orleans is Sinking, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, or Wheat Kings! You'd love them!
My favorite Joni Mitchell song is "A Case of You".
Great shout. Written about Graham Nash, I think.
"Chelsea Morning", "Coyote", "Amelia", "I Don't Know Where I Stand", "Both Sides, Now", "Morning Morgantown", "River", "Blue Motel Room" - a rich, full catalogue of decades of great songs. And yes, definitely timeless.
Please do Amelia, Coyote, Hejira, or Car on a Hill next!
I love Coyote!
Car on a Hill is great
You should definitely do "Amelia" - BTW, it's #91 in Rick Beato's "What Makes This Song Great" series on You Tube... Or "River", from the "Blue" album...
Yes! But really, he should just do the entire Hejira album, then move on to the rest of her discography in its totality. He won't be disappointed.
Just Like This Train is insanely good too.
So glad you saw this, seeing a Free man in Paris coming.. I can't wait... Yes . this is Joni Mitchell... Jimmy hendrix used to go and record her intimate concerts...amazing subtle guitar chord transitions.
Man, please do a react for "Our House" - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, record: Deja Vu.
Joni came from small town western Canada. She wrote "Woodstock" performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - She missed her flight to go to Woodstock to perform her own song so her friends did. Few women at the time had such notable collaborators.
React to “both sides now” by Joni Mitchell or “10,000 miles” by Mary Chapin carpenter
Or anything by Mary Chaplin Carpenter...she’s great!
I was young when she was young. This is amazing and unforgettable.
Do coyote next!!!
At Gordon Lightfoot's house!
Here on TH-cam, with Bob Dylan too
The one from Rolling Thunder Review... It's pretty good, but I like the Shadows and Light version and if course the original on Hejira better.
Jamel - i so appreciate what you're doing to keep all these wonderful artists and their incredible work ALIVE !!! Carry on, friend -
Early Olivia Newton-John will soothe the savage beast... Have You Never Been Mellow, If You Love Me, Please Mr Please,
Fully agreed including I Honestly Love You!!
Yeah, forgot I Honestly Love You and Deeper Than the Night.
@@rightbraincreative okay since you mentioned the Totally Hot album now I have to suggest A Little More Love which has an awesome video. Hopefully he'll react to a few of these.
........77 years old Thanks Joni!!! Magic pure and simple! Love you, always!!!
Love Joni! Try Joan Baez “Diamonds and Rust!!! It’s about Bob Dylan, the poet!!!
That song reminds me of the late fall up north where I grew up. Hope Jamel will do that one too !
Yes agree!! Pls Jamel...react to Joan Baez's Diamonds & Rust you will go to another level of conscientious!!😌
Dude, you are the bomb! You have the best most honest reactions to this great music; you and I just enjoyed Help Me by Joni...wow...made me sad. So glad you love the Allmans and all the classics keep it up! Bill
