    I just bought Elantra limited after test driving first a civic 2.0 sedan sport then it. The civic had enough pep but had that weird CVT behavior of engine excessive revving and seemed a bit noisier inside. The steering in civic was better, and it came in a bright red that I loved. But what killed the civic for me mostly was the incredibly harsh ride, especially from the rear wheels. Which is strange given the independent suspension. But I am over 60, so I now like a softer ride. I didn’t want to move up to higher level, because I don’t want direct injection or turbo engine, because of potential intake valve gunk and oil dilution. After 10 minute drive in Elantra I knew I found my car. Relatively smooth ride and quiet interior for this class. Plus the engine power surprised me. Seemed stronger than Its numbers. No color choices I loved. Went with black.

      I like elements of the new 2019 look. Although less elegant, I do like the new front end...especially the triangular headlights. Very distinctive. I like all of the interior enhancements, except for the checkered pattern in the gauge cluster. I completely dislike the rear. No redeeming qualities to my eye. I like the new alloy wheels on the SEL, though not more than the 2018 SEL wheels.

    • @iloveopal1
      @iloveopal1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love it. I don’t get why everyone hates the headlights. I think they look sleek, whereas the lights on the older elantras wrap around into a weird rounded shape. And the wheels on the limited are awesome.

    I totally agree about none of the drive modes being ideal. After nearly 2,500 miles of driving, I still haven't found a comfortable, suitable drive mode to leave the car in full-time. This is the conclusion I've come to:
    Sport mode = Aggressively jumpy throttle. Transmission holds revs unnecessarily high before upshifting. The drive mode defaults to Normal mode after powering down and restarting the car. I can only seeing this drive mode being ideal if you have a full load of passengers and are driving on mountainous terrain. Otherwise, it's overly aggressive and pointless.
    Normal mode = Initial throttle response still too jumpy off the line for smooth take off. Transmission upshift points and downshift response feel ideal, but has a hard time deciding what gear to be in driving around the city in the 5 - 40mph range. Transmission gear hunts a lot and behaves clunky as a result in this speed range. Feels perfectly behaved out on open roads, however.
    Eco/Smart = Throttle response dulled, resulting in smoother and more linear throttle response. Transmission upshift points are far too early and downshift response to throttle input is almost absent. After excessive throttle input, transmission finally decides to downshift, but downshifts 2 gears instead of one, making for a neck snapping experience.

    Almost every Aussie Elantra Sedan has for yonks, got rear a/c vents. Maybe because it's a hot continent/country. (there's a kind of an unannounced contest to find a town that's ever got snow). The i30 Hatch (AKA Elantra GT in USA/Canada) tends to sell about about 10 to 1 year in year out compared with the Elantra Sedan including Elantra 'Sport' Sedan (so these small cars are all hatches except for i30Fastback & back a bit, an i30 wagon.) 'N' Series branding is quickly engulfing Hyundai, but the real one is the i30N which was first 'N' series here whilst you got good old (well not v old) Velosters in 'N' first, but only in '18/19 did Velosters here get 'N'. Interestingly in Oz we call the brand HIGH-UN-DI (like the Brits), whereas you go for HUN-DAY. ["a rose by any other name......etc"]:-)

    *You gave a very fair and accurate review.* I think the new front end is ugly and I would prefer the 2018 model over the 2019. The current 2019 Hyundai Sonata is my favorite vehicle, and the 2019 Hyundai Accent is my favorite compact car. The new Elantra is ruined for me because of the looks and suspension system. The inside looks very nice, however, but that is not enough. The Sonata looks great and has independent rear suspension, and you can get them at a bargain price, usually 15% below MSRP. I love Hyundai as a company. The Kia Forte has practical advantages for a economy car, but it looks too tubby and tick-like for me, and the suspension is not good. I would rather have a Civic or the upcoming Toyota Corolla, which looks at least OK and has many mechanical advantages over the competition.

      @marieschwartz7781 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me, both cars look good from the side. From the back, the Forte would look good except for the ugly black around turn signals stuck in middle of bumper. So Elantra wins from back. From front, the top half of both cars look good, different from each other, but good (Elantra classy, Forte sporty. But the lower half of Forte has more cheap looking black plastic including fins that stick out, yuck. The Hyundai front lower half takes some getting used to, but it is growing on me. So for me, Elantra better looking overall. But I am old, so maybe the Forte more youthful? Then there is the 6 speed dual clutch automatic in Elantra versus the CVT in the Forte. The CVT seems to get more performance as well as gas mileage out of the same engine.

Why? the squared off center console cuts down the driver legroom (for me anyway). I felt cramped and uncomfortable. The results: I now drive a 2019 Kona Limited. Sunroof, tinted windows, mirror turn signals, fog lamps, 16" alloy wheels, and a MUCH better looking nose, to name a few features! The newer Elantras are just too flattened out, and got rid of the fluidic design that the 2011 thru 2016 models had! And again, that nose is not real good looking....not bad, but no where near as excellent as the 2011 thru 2016 models! Wow did Hyundai ruin this once god looking car. Looks like an uglier Jetta now. Loved the pre refresh look. Shame. Was going to buy the Sport a year ago but passed due to a lack of an LSD option. Looking back I guess I should have been just thankful it had IRS and didn't completely cheapen it out which seems to be the Kia/Hyundai direction with this car

    I own a 2017 Elantra. They have a 2.0 Atkinson cycle variant of the Nu engine. I would stay away. Mine, and according to many reports the dealer told me they get, is they make a loud ticking/tapping noise when cold. It sounds like a diesel. Dealer reported Hyundai said it was normal because the metal shrinks in cold weather. I have never ever had a car do this in cold weather and I have had my fair share of bombs. I bought it used so am only covered up to 60000 miles. I said to Hyundai ok if this is so normal cover my car to the full 10 year 100000 mile warranty. They just keep giving me the run around. I mean if there is no issue with the car it would not cost them anything to give the full powertrain warranty. I have no confidence in the longevity of this engine and unfortunately it looks like they are putting these in more models. Also I think these engines are in the Kia Forte and other Kia models.

    • @jasongallagher9547
      @jasongallagher9547 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2.0. Is the best engine. The 1.8 nu engine has issues sometimes. If you get a 2011 to 2016 get INE that the vin begins with kmh. That means made in Korea.. They had way less issues with the engine. Mine has a 133k and runs great but mine was made in Korea. Even my mechanic said buy the korean ones they are the best

    • @jasongallagher9547
      @jasongallagher9547 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it is when it is cold under 40 degrees that's normal. Your car has direct injection. It's normal for the sound. The 2017 and up ones have a better engine.

    • @hunter1701d
      @hunter1701d 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasongallagher9547 Thanks for the reply, glad you are having a good experience with yours. It is possible to find a good example of any make of car , even from FCA, but it is not as easy as better brands. The 2.0 Nu engine in the Elantra I had did not have direct injection. they ran with port injection on the atkinson cycle. The dealership i took it to admitted it did not sound normal, but after they contacted Hyundai they changed their tune. I have a car with direct injection and it sounds nothing like that Elantra's internal noises. The direct injection is a ticking noise from the high pressure they run on and does not change with the temp of the motor. Hyundai has had a terrible track record with build quality of late, their recent recall history is proof of that. Wherever they build their cars or engines it has their name on them.
