*Overall **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I feel the Shadowfire 360 offers excellent value for those who are new to tenkara and don't want to break the bank on their first rod purchase.*
Yea I would have to say I know you are used to catching really big cats, but for many people these are big cats, just funny to hear you say "He is not that big." And then pull up a 10-20 pounder lol.In my opinion you catch some awesome fish. I love watching man, you have great advice and you make me wish I was right there with ya enjoying the outdoors friend. Keep up the good work.
@basfishermanallyear yea you still use your trollin motor but you pull yourself along a general area, control drifting is contoling the boat on a specific area of bank, such as a legde or a drop.
yea you can anchor on them if you find a good number of fish but i will just go back and drift through again most of the time. and yeap the flats are always good in lakes, flat close to a channel is even better. good luck
Im Heading up to kerr lake this weekend where the world record blue was caught. I'm gonna try this same rig for the first time. Hope it does well. Thanks for the advice.
Hi Steve! Thanks for turning me onto catfishing! I have a couple questions. is it better to drift in the winter or anchor? Is there a particular time you anchor more than drifting? Lastly, are you usually always in the channel when you drift? Sorry for all the questions! I am very excited to head out with my kids and have some fun!
Steve, once again thanks for all the info you share with us all. What is to high off the bottom to drift you bait. I am losing a lot of gear drifting a lake for blues.
@akwalung I have tried catfishing on the arkansas river 5 times now. Not a nibble! I have found what i believe to be fish on my depth finder swimming around in 30 feet of water. I am fishing near a dam. I have anchored and fished and drifted. I have been using frozen shad as cut bait. could this be the problem? do i need fresh bait? I reeled the tip to the pole and everything! TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO HEAR TO CATCH SOME DAMN CATFISH AROUND HERE!!!!!!!!!!!
i never herd of drift fishing till now, can you do this type of fishing in bigger rivers like Mississippi rive and how do you keep from getting snagged on something?
Steve, What is the reason for cutting the gut pocket out? I typically steak them out with it in. Is there advantage to cutting it out? And why? Thanks..I have been learning a lot because of anglers like yourself.
+Chad Legereit Chad i cut that out because it normally falls out in the first through and leaves a cavity that catches water and spins when im pulling it or its in current, same thing happens when you cut bait diagonally and I dont want my bait to spin. heres a vid of my cuts of jacks. th-cam.com/video/u-6oqH1CYz8/w-d-xo.html
I second it Steve. Do you ever just anchor into place when you find a good number of them on your depth finder?... also, what areas would you target on a lake for drift fishing? Flats?
hay man do you use the monster river anchor? if not what do u use? i have lost around five in the river i fish,i fish in the cumberland, carthage tn, cordell hull dam area
Steve I have been going back through and watching all your old posts. Me and my dad are going to fish the Monsters on the Ohio this year, so I am getting ready. I am going to be buying a new 20 foot sun tracker fishing barge before then. I have a 2 year old and the other boat just was not going to cut it with him, needed more room. You ever see anyone have success drifting in a pontoon?
I have tried drifting for the past 3 days, only caught 13 pound cat, have you tried this technique on Mississippi River, I cannot seem to get it to work, any suggestions
Drifting for chanel cats tomorrow while casting for white bass. I might catch both I might catch niether. I might cats a lake record pike or a giant stinky carp. Who knows?
I think the U.S. Federal Government should NOT allow Free drifting, it should be regulated with heavy fee's, it causes damage to the environment "Lost Lead Weights" and pollution from outboard motors! It should be regulated with a fee of $500 to $5,000 and be called "Fee Drifting" Also, the fish caught should be "Redistributed" to the people who cannot afford to fish or do not want to fish because it is hard work! And, mandatory fish re-education classes where they will learn about "Fish Rights" and "Sensitivty Training" to be more aware of the feelings of the fish, they have a right to life and the pursuit of happiness to you know! Long live vegans and eat more bean sprouts!!! And long live King Obama, may he reign for 100 years!
Steve Douglas The Catfish Dude I like your Nonster rod holders and would like to use some, BUT I DONT want to drill holes in my Scout Boat. I have recessed built in holders for trolling in rear, but would like a few of these for the front. Anyway?
Not all of us are puppets of the "gooberment" ...If you want to gripe about things, start with your government. They do and allow more "damage to the environment" than people fishing and loosing weights ever will. Your ignorance of them and their wickedness and destruction is their bliss.
Are you a commercial fisherman that sells to Paylakes? If not you should be, you could make a lot of money selling the fish to the paylakes....help the local economy a lot too.
m14beta no! Im not googin that sells to paylakes. Im a sportsman that respects the fishery, by the way I hope your not selling to the pay lakes as the Kentucky DNR has just approved a budget for trophy catfish stings to catch the guys who are catching from the river to sell to paylakes. You never know who you can trust now and i support it 100%. Good luck out there sir.
That's a real shame your mind operates like that. Paylakes are for children who don't have the ability to buy themselves a boat and truck to go to where the fish exist naturally where they belong. Pay ponds are like fishing in a barrel. People who worship money are in for areal suprise someday. A real sportsman believes in conservation and think of the future. Kentucky has allowed the overharvest of catfish for too long already to be encouraging even more commercial fisherman
m14beta Paylakes are destroying fisheries all over the country. I ran across guys on my local river putting 20-30 pounders into live wells for a small little pond to charge people over 30 dollars to fish. They also use them to win tournaments. If you need a bathtub stocked with stolen 60 pound fish to catch them your not fishing. Help the local economy ? how? I paid a lot of money to fish the ohio last weekend between food and hotel if paylakers have there way there wont be any fish in that river or my local river left to fish. It hurts the economy in the respected rives area (thats a lot of area for rivers) and puts it into one persons pocket. Horrible behavior that is running todays trophy fishery. Steve Douglas is the biggest voice for CPR fishing trophy fish and is renowned by the cat fish community nation wide for his conservation minded fishing and efforts to stop poaching and paylakers - among his awesome attitude and tactics.
Paylakes are where trophy fish go to die, IMO fish from local fisheries like the Ohio river and DNR impoundments should be illegal to take for the purpose of stocking for profit lakes. Those lake owners should be required to purchase farm raised catfish for stocking purposes
*Overall **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I feel the Shadowfire 360 offers excellent value for those who are new to tenkara and don't want to break the bank on their first rod purchase.*

Yea I would have to say I know you are used to catching really big cats, but for many people these are big cats, just funny to hear you say "He is not that big." Steve this is my all time favorite video that you put up. It is what got me started drifting thanks buddy

thanks for the comment
Thank you every time I see your videos I learn something new
i use 65 pound braid and i do set my drag also. but for just general catfishing i would think 40 lb mono or braid will work.
Seriously, this is your best video!
yea you can anchor on them if you find a good number of fish but i will just go back and drift through again most of the time. and yeap the flats are always good in lakes, flat close to a channel is even better. good luck

What brand 50 lb. mono do you typically use and which knots do you usually tie?
Steve, What is the reason for cutting the gut pocket out? I typically steak them out with it in. Is there advantage to cutting it out? And why?
Thanks..I have been learning a lot because of anglers like yourself.

Steve I have been going back through and watching all your old posts. Me and my dad are going to fish the Monsters on the Ohio this year, so I am getting ready.
