The scene of Pinnochio’s nose growing as he keeps lying being imposed over Walt Disney as you recount the numerous tall tales he’s told about his mascot’s origins is exactly video editing was made for.

I have a two-year-old child, which means I watch a lot of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The closing theme of that show, written by They Might Be Giants, is the "hot dog" dance song. Thanks to this video, I now understand that "hot dog, hot dog" were the first words Mickey spoke, which no doubt influenced the song.

Mousetrapped by Randy Milholland is a webcomic that sort of functions as a sequel to Steamboat Willie, taking the characters from it and some others from the same time and using them to tell an original comedic narrative. Certainly more interesting than all the mickey mouse horror.

As someone who has really not consumed very much Disney media in my lifetime (I was so traumatised by Bambi as a child, literally, after I watched it I had recurring nightmares of my mum dying and I refused to watch any other Disney films) my main idea of Mickey Mouse as a character is as portrayed in South Park.

Related to the presence that mickey mouse has in american culture: in the 90s, disney released a rap album called "mickey unrapped" where the cover featured mickey mouse w/ baggy pants and a backwards baseball cap, and years later a florencia 13 gang member made a drawing depicting mickey doing a similar pose as the "mickey unrapped" cover but w/ disrespectful statements against rival gangs written around him. It made me think of the various gangs that have sometimes used mickey in their art like venice 13, insane 22 boys, latin brothers, latin pachucos, etc. One of the most notable examples being a mural made in north and latrobe in chicago featuring a mickey mouse flashing the latin brothers gang sign while dressed like he was in fantasia

I'm glad Micky has taken a form you enjoy so thoroughly, and that you found something fun in the process of researching the topic! Considering how often my own digging into rabbit holes of curiosity has led me to terrible things, theres reflexive exhaustion felt whenever I *idiate* on a childhood influence I haven't looked up the backstory on... but also a stubborn determination to find out anyway because I Care About Knowing What Is True, not comforting myths and the vauge fog of my own maintained ignorance.
Finding out modern Mickey is actually a lot of fun was a wholesome twist ❤

I did hear the bit where you said you don't want any more Mickey Mouse horror, but I still feel compelled to recommend, for anyone who's interested in "old" horror sci-fi, C.M. Kornbluth's short story "The Advent on Channel Twelve." It's fabulous, creepy, and very tongue-in-cheek. In fact, just read all the C.M. Kornbluth possible! People really sleep on him and it's a damned shame.
Also, I was utterly unprepared for "ratfuckers" and almost shot coffee out of my nose. Your increasingly great comedic writing paired with the overall matter-of-fact delivery older viewers expect makes it all the funnier.
Really liking this new stuff. It's clear you're in a better place writing it and having fun with writing, and it's great to hear. :3

This video appeals a lot to me specifically because, for whatever reason, I've come to really like ruminating on the meta-character (or lackthereof) of long running franchise characters. Mickey & Co., the Looney Tunes, the Scooby Gang, Pokémon, etc. I just find it interesting how so much about these characters can change from iteration to iteration, & yet they're always recognizable, because they're more symbol than they are a part of any one narrative, really.
Also, I just really like Daffy Duck.

3:07 - 7:38 As someone who considers himself an animation historian, I think you're not giving Walt Disney enough credit for the creation of Mickey Mouse. Don't get me wrong, Ub Iwerks was EQUALLY important to Mickey's creation and he didn't 100% get the recognition he deserved, but at the same time I think people often OVERCORRECT themselves by saying "Ub is the REAL CREATOR and Walt Disney STOLE Mickey"... but in reality BOTH men were equally responsible. While the exact inspiration for Mickey has always been something of a "he said/she said" situation (mostly because both Walt and Ub gave conflicting reports over the decades) so we'll never 100% know the exact details, what we do know is this: Ub Iwerks DESIGNED Mickey and ANIMATED the first handful of cartoons almost entirely by himself... HOWEVER much of the writing and direction of the early Mickey cartoons was by Walt Disney.
If you want proof of that, in 1930 Ub Iwerks feeling he wasn't getting his due credit, left Disney and formed his own studio creating forgettable characters like Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper. Many who worked at the studio like Grim Natwick, Shamus Cullhane and Chuck Jones in their later years said that Ub wasn't that particularly creative, and audiences largely rejected his cartoons leading to MGM cancelling his distribution contract in 1934 with one theatre manager writing "...never have we been so glad to rid ourselves of Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper". Walt on the other hand was bursting with creativity, the Disney Archives have transcripts of story confrences between Walt and his artists on productions like Snow White and Bambi, and it shows him giving exact directions on characters, shots, camera angles, music etc. There's even stories of Walt acting out specific parts, and the animators being mesmerised.
Look, I'm not trying to talk down Ub Iwerks here, he was a brilliant animator and deserves a lot of credit for Mickey's creation, but that doesn't take away from Walt's contributions either. At the end of the day, animation is a collaborative medium and no single person can take credit for any one idea. Who created Mickey: Walt or Ub? Simple, THEY BOTH DID!
Besides, in 1940 Walt and Ub eventually patched things up, and Ub (who at this point had grown bored with animating) returned to Disney in 1940 and became the tech-wiz at the Disney Studio, developing techniques such as the combination of live-action and animation on Mary Poppins.
Also, the relationship portrayed in The Simpsons episode: "The Day the Violence Died"... is honestly a lot closer to that of Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer (and the creation of Felix the Cat) than it is Walt and Ub.

This episode was awesome from start to finish, but again,, I have to say that I deeply connect with a part of it, specifically your story to kick it off. I also had a weird dream about Disney characters when I was a kid. Mine only happened when I was sick, and I was in a trench in WWII with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. We were cowering against the sides of the trench as enemy soldiers marched by and an endless stream of planes flew overhead dropping bombs. That introduced me the whole concept of a fever dream and has ensured that I take Nyquil before bed if I'm feeling even slightly ill ever since.

I sort the modern Mickey cartoon based on regions as my definitive viewing order. Sometimes it's the suburb, metropolis, e/w coast, mid-west, world tour, etc.

Awesome to see this new variety of videos from you, Leon. Been watching since way back when you were doing longform film reviews & it's always a joy to see what you come up with.

I think you would really like Scavengers Reign. It's on Netflix now but was originally a Max animated series. It's a really fucken creative world. Anyway, I really liked it.

My favorite new media in the last ten forevers. That said, I hope Leon doesn't make a video on it, because I've been working on a script about it for one of the first long-form essays I hope to start making, and I'm sure he'll make all my best observations much better and faster than I could! >_

If you're a cartoon appreciator, latter-day Mickey Mouse is also fun because a lot of random names in TV animation took at crack at Michaeled Mouse and you get to see what they specifically did with it -- the R&S alums really did well. Older Mickey shorts are usually good, except that really bland era where he was a surburbanite doing suburbanite shit. Child-me realized that Mickey was corporate when I saw Mickey tell someone to GET OFF MY LAWN!

I do have some fond memories of these shorts, although I haven't seen many of them, because periodically one or two of them would get put onto the eternally looping DVD that was played in the Disney Store that I worked at. I especially was grateful to them during the neverending nightmare that was the response to Frozen, because at least it wasn't a 4th rendition of Let It Go that I had to hear within an hour and a half.

My headcanon for Mickey is that he's a former actor (not a star mind you, probably a B-lister), that at some point in the 1940s started living his retired life in Florida. At least that's the vibe the late 50s cartoon shorts gives me.
And yeah, the new Mickey cartoons are very funny. Those and The Show of the Looney Tunes surprised me with what creative people can do even with stale characters, when given a bit of a free hand.

Comictropes has a video about the early Mickey comics that was kind of interesting, how there was a little bit of an ongoing lore and cast than the shorts. More notable, Mickey has a gun!
