Who would have thought "Superheroes go to group therapy" could provide such an enticing plot hook.
I know right!
Yup. I was shocked with how compelling that could be. The best part was all the personal growth that stayed with them through the series.
@@catborg780 I may be forever disappointed in how soon the show ended, but I'll be forever thankful it ended on its own terms, without execs forcing the characters to constantly backtrack forever for the sake of more episodes.
Sounds like heros in crisis
They’ve been this way since the 1960s. You just haven’t noticed till now
Brandon Frasier nailed that role
I love Brendan Fraser. He absolutely crushes every role he's in, especially this one.
@LaughingLuLu he reminds me of Walton Goggins and Ben Foster. They can pull off the characters that are layered but don't take themselves too serious. Venus Van Dam in sons of anarchy and the apartment neighbor in Thomas Jane's punisher.
Brendan, I thought fell off after all those mummy movies and quit Hollywood. But really he wrecked his body doing stunts and has had a ton of surgery and therapy
I'd love to see some behind the scenes on this. He wasn't suited to and mostly just did voice work. Do they use the robot actor to emote to Brandon's lines or vice versa
Robotman's ending in Season 4 hurts till this day.
@@LaughingLuLu This was the beginning of him coming back to the screen after far too long away. Us fans of his were happy to find him here.
DC shows have not really surpassed Doom Patrol IMO.
Yeah I agree, although I did really enjoy Peacemaker.
live action?
@@cjuw Yeah, I assume he was talking about live action.
Live action wise I agree, though animation wise I recommend checking out My Adventures With Superman
@@MrElmo54321 Oh yeah I've heard of that show! It looks really cute.
No other show could do singing butts
True lol.
The day my butt went psycho
the show is a breath of fresh air, comic book tv shows and movies shouldn't take themselves too seriously I'm so sick of the Marvel formula
Yeah, I agree.
> “comic book tv shows and movies shouldn’t take themselves too seriously”
> “I’m so sock of the Marvel formula”
Well which is it? Do you want comic shows and movies to take itself seriously or not? Cause last I check the Marvel formula basically don’t take itself too seriously
More specifically, this show knows how to balance its tones, something Marvel isn’t particularly good at nowadays.
The closest it has to this show is Guardians Of The Galaxy, which stands out not just because of its silly elements, but also its darker ones like Rocket’s whole backstory or heartfelt ones like Rocket and Yondu bonding over their shared traumas.
@@callmev3531 That and Loki. Also Daredevil which actually kind of started the whole mature superhero streaming shows that Doom Patrol and The Boys follow suit from:
Though you could also argue the Captain America trilogy also does a good job in balancing levity and seriousness in its movies and shows.
@@BigK13372are we gonna act like Marvel knows how to do camp like Doom Patrol does
Its always so interesting watching show that you're going to be like:
"Yep this is going to be an underrated gem and a cult classic"
Its both good and bad but you know what?
As long as the end result is good, I'm still happy.
Exactly!
My favorite episode was the one that introduced us to Danny rhe Street.
Imagine a place that openly welcomed all of society's "rejects" with open arms; never judging them, hating them for their identities or wanting to force them to be "normal" like so many politicians are currently doing
It was definitely a great episode. Now I feel like I should have mentioned it in my video lol.
@@LaughingLuLu I gotta say, though...I can't decide which organization seems the most evil; CADMUS, ARGUS or the Bureau of Normalcy.
That's such an ugly word these days...normalcy
I like Doom Patrol more than Peacemaker. The opening of Doom Patrol has an incredible theme.
As much as I love Peacemaker, I agree. Doom Patrol just has a deeper place in my heart.
I think they are so different i can hardly compare them. Love them like i love my pets, just as much because of their quirks
@@Windwalker88 Yeah, I agree lol.
@@Windwalker88 I didn't want to compare, especially because Peacemaker is coming from a film, but I mean in terms of the DC series in general
@@HellboyBr11 but the real question is: "do you really wanna taste it?"
I also followed Doom Patrol from start to finish. Great series with a real banger intro and outro song.
Same, and agreed! The intro and outro are certified hood classics.
Of all the comic-book adaptations I've seen, perhaps the closest spiritually (and often textually) to its source material. I remember thinking more than once--are they going to (insert deeply unlikely Grant Morrison plot point/character here) and then being surprised and delighted when they pretty much did and pulled it off.
True! They embraced all the comic book wackiness like no other comic book show.
It’s pretty on point Doom Patrol for taking notes from Grant Morrison and Gerard Way by James Gunn fans.
I agree. I'm a huge Gerard Way fan, as well as a James Gunn fan. Even if the Doom Patrol won't exist in the new DCU, I think James Gunn will do amazing.
@@LaughingLuLuPretty sure they are gonna exist in the dcu, i heard of a rumoured movie but im hopeful that everyone will exist in some way
I liked how Brain had a cameo in this nutty show, you know the Brain in a jar.
"Mallah, get me my toys!" I love the brain lol.
Be a Somebody! Just like Mr Nobody!
Exactly!
I adore this team. The show is one of the best shows I've ever seen. The fact they adapted so much of the 90s comic run is astounding. Best super hero show ever!
Definitely one of my favorites. The way they embraced their comics like no other show, was awesome.
Kind of low budget, but...
... Well written, with likable characters and following its source material with evident respect and appreciation.
I loved it.
Exactly!
I legitimately have no idea how DC is able to produce so many live-action shows... for most of the planet to never speak of them, kind of impressed, but also really confused
Yeah, that's fair lol.
I'm surprised Cyborg didn't try joining the Titans after Doom Patrol.
Me too. If Titans went on longer than Doom Patrol, he probably would have switched over.
They are actually separate universes.
@@sandwichqueen They established in Titans that they were in the same universe, but I felt like they slowly just separated themselves from each other.
@@LaughingLuLu while there is a Doom Patrol in the Titans universe, they are two different Doom Patrol. It's very confusing.
Doom Patrol is actually made by Berlanti Productions, which made Arrow and The Flash as well as a bunch of other shows. In the arrowverse Crisis, it is actually shown they are on different universes.
This isn't actually the only time a backdoor pilot and show are two different universes. Dead boy Detectives did this as well.
Tbh I am surprised its cyborg and not beast boy since
Thanks for reminding me to finish this show. I feel like this was one of the shows that brought Brenden Frasier back to he limelight.
Of course! I definitely think this show helped Brenden ease back into acting.
Doom patrol gave us the the idea of how an actual superpowered family be
True. I honestly think they're the best and most well done "superpowered family" besides The Guardians of The Galaxy. And Umbrella Academy, but that one is a little different.
If you're confused by anything I poorly explain in the video, I apologize. Watching the show will make everything make more sense lol.
Also, Brendan Fraser is literally a god. I love him.
If you intended us to watch it, why spoil the big twist?
@@Mecharnie_Dobbs At the time of making the video I made it for people that had already seen it, but then I thought of the title afterwards and wanted to also appeal to new people, so then it became like kind of both. Obviously I didn't do a good job, so next video I make I'm going to separate the spoiler and non spoiler stuff.
Stop lying the show makes less sense even after watching this video everything is batshit crazy in this show and its not hyperbole
@@LD_Paradox I mean yeah, it was made that way on purpose.
NLG this are the best super hero shows in modern times
Agreed!
I remember when I first saw these guys in ‘Titans’. I immediately fell in love with them
Saaaameeee.
I was like “WTF am i watching?” at the first episode, and i loved it. So I finished the whole series.
Yeah pretty much same. 😂
“I am responsible for the tragedies the befell you all… Except you Victor, you’re just a brat.”
Yeah, pretty much. 😂
I love that there’s a whole incredible amount of totally unhinged stuff you didn’t even mention, like Danny The Street, Flex Mentallo, The Decreator, Animal Vegetable Mineral Man, The Sex Ghosts and the BUTTS!
I was more focused on the main characters, but yes. I love all of them, and they are most definitely some of the most unhinged stuff in tv lol.
The idea of this team at its core is so good: a group of misfit weirdos brought together to be the vanguard against any apocalypse that threatens the DC universe… but all of them are such dysfunctional wrecks they can’t work together for even a minute to do so. Asking the age old comics question “why didn’t x help with this event?” with Doom Patrol can reasonably be answered with “dealing with their own shit!”
That is a pretty perfect summary.
My brother bought the entire series on DVD. He regrets nothing.
That's awesome.
I always like the Doom Patrol comics, especially the originals, and yes, Cliff was the heart and soul. But it just never took off for some reason despite several attempts. TBH, I wasn't even aware that this live-action version existed, but if I stumble over it someday, I'll definitely give it a look. Thanks!
For sure! I think I should finally read the comics lol.
Not trying to throw shade, I mean this as a genuine critique: this vide is framed as a pitch, trying to promote the show to an audience who has not seen it yet, and your pitch is genuinely quite good! I haven’t seen it and now I want to! That said, you drop a major spoiler 5 minutes into an 18 minute video. I genuinely want to see what you have to say, but I’m stopping here because you haven’t flagged spoilers and I want to see it for myself. I would recommend discussing thematics and writing FIRST, and then jumping into plot details at the end, after letting your audience know you’re entering spoiler territory. Again, no shade intended. What I’ve seen so far is great. Keep at it!
Thanks for the criticism! While I was making this video, it was intended for people that had already seen. Almost close to finishing it, I wanted to also appeal to people that hadn't seen it at the same time. Obviously, I didn't do a great job at it, so it's something I'm learning from my mistake and fixing in all of my future videos. I'm gonna make sure to separate non spoiler and spoiler stuff and give proper warnings in the videos.
Plus the show's been done for a while so most people have already seen spoilers for it on Facebook TH-cam Twitter and all that in some capacity
Michelle Gomez playing a character with a Time Machine in a show that also had Timothy Dalton in it at some point.. where have I seen that before?
Hmmm, I wonder! 😂
I love that when she was narrating Madam Rouge's comic origin and had to read The Brain parts, she did it with a Dalek's voice.
"Worst" not as in its a bad show but the fact they suck at being heroes.
Exactly!
I was a background character in this show they filmed an episode in georgia and asked my baseball team if we wanted to maked a 100 dollars and we stayed up all night to be in a show for like less than 10 seconds
That's awesome! What episode?
"You NEED To Watch"....Then goes on to spoil the whole show smh
At the time of making the video, I made it for people that had already seen it, but then I thought of the title afterwards and wanted to also appeal to new people, so then it became like kind of both. Obviously I didn't do a good job, so next video I make I'm going to separate the spoiler and non spoiler stuff.
Is it me, or does cliff lowkey look like robot from invincible
Yeah true, he kinda does.
I love Doom Patrol so much. This wacky show has so much heart and emotion inside of it.
Agreed!
There's never been anything quite like Doom Patrol before and I doubt there'll be anything like Doom Patrol again.
I 100% agree. It was just too unique to replicate.
Fun fact batman also has idd it's batman, Bruce, zerr an arr and sometimes the dark one depending who writes him but batman uses all his personalities all tactical not for show differently from say moon knight
Hmm, Interesting.
If I had a penny for each time Michelle Gomez played a character who used to be evil but tries to become better slowly but steadily I’d have two pennies which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice
Yeah, true. 😂
I love Doom patrol so much. Great video brother!
Thanks bro!
This show feels like what the umbrella academy wants to be
To be fair, a lot of things in this show is based off of the doom patrol comics that Gerard Way wrote, who also wrote the umbrella academy comics, and then he went on to make the umbrella academy show.
"Am I In Florida I just f*cking left Florida
One of my favorite quotes. 😂
They blew all of their effects budget on Robot Man alone 😂
Yeah, pretty much. 😂
Still don't understand why they shoe horned cyborg into the show given having a robotman already.
Yeah I can see an argument where you can say he was randomly thrown in there just to give the show a well known character. Even if that's kind of true, I think they did very well with his character, giving him really good character development and making him a fun part of the team.
Because of all popular characters the general audience actually cares about. Cyborg thematically fits the Doom Patrol.
And honestly..... I'm kinda glad that he is in a better show than Titans. lol
@@Magnet_Chaos Yeah I completely agree.
@@LaughingLuLubeast boy also would’ve worked, and they wanted him, but titans already snatched him up
Titans got beast boy.
Hello @LaughingLuLu I just wanted to say your video essay was amazing. I love the Doom Patrol from the moment it aired and I greatly appreciate your kind words that you gave out about the show. I have to agree that season 4 was a bit rocky and I wish they would have given a conclusion to both Dorothy and Kipling but the finale overall was both tragic and beautiful to watch. Plus you have to admit that season is a whole lot better compared to some of the MCU shows especially ones like Secret Invasion and Wandavision there was even a article online called “Inverse” that discussed about how season 2 of Doom Patrol avoided Wandavision’s finale flaw basically it was trying to avoid the mistakes Wandavision had made in its finale compared to that of Doom Patrols. Anyway I hope you see this text and hopefully respond back, have a nice day.
Thanks for watching! I'm kinda glad they ended at season 4, because season 5 might've been stretching the show too thin. Even though the ending was rough, the show was most definitely 1000% times better than all of the mcu shows combined (besides Loki and Moon Knight, which I actually really like).
@@LaughingLuLu yeah that’s true but I kind of wish Loki could have done different variations on Kang because how come Loki can be played by different actors like a girl, a little kid, a old man, a black man, and a alligator. But Kang is just played by a single actor, I’m not trying to be rude but I’m just saying that in the cartoon Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes we saw three different variants of Kang, one was an old man, the other a woman, and a child. I wish that they would have done that. Please don’t think I’m being rude or anything like that and I did like Moon Knight but if I had to be honest I think Doom Patrol handled it better with Crazy Jane they made DID (dissociative identity disorder) more normal and tried to make a little more lighthearted compared to Moon Knight’s. And Doom Patrol doesn’t really seem to do Identity politics compared to marvel like the part with “are you a Egyptian hero?” it just didn’t sound right, again please don’t think I’m being rude or anything. Where in Doom Patrol they just let us the audience relate to any character even if some are people of color like Madame Rouge, Cyborg, and Crazy Jane even their white counterparts like Cliff, Rita, and Larry who is a gay man but you can relate to them on either a personal level or by the choices we make too or even how we act.
@@angeldeleon1130 Yeah I do think Doom Patrol handled the whole DID thing better than Moon Knight did. Jane was definitely a lot more relatable than Marc.
@@LaughingLuLu thank you, you’re such a nice person I hope to talk more with you have a great day.

I remember when i watched the trailer in 2019-2020, right after i watched a teen titans ep with the doom patrol (black hole,p2) on an airplane. Was too young tho
I never even saw any trailers, I just heard the concept, and heard the actors that were in it, and I immediately wanted to watch it.
All things considered the show is defintely the perfect show to binge on Pride Month
For sure!
This is hands down one of my favorite DC shows to ever exist. No fuck it, one of my favorite shows ever, period.
It definitely is my favorite DC show, next to Peacemaker.
my introduction to this show was from my dad watching it and I'm got hooked on it pretty much immediately, the show was weird but the characters were genuinely so endearing and just kept me wanting more and that ending left me bawling dude, even now 8 months later it still hits so hard, cliff watching his daughter and grandson be in good hands is such a good way to end it but the final line from cliff was what really hit me, the fact that his goal from the start of the first episode was made symbolic by the end was such a heartbreaking but beautiful end to a genuinely super underrated show
Same! My dad told me about the show and I was immediately intrigued. And yeah the ending is so soul crushing but also a really nice full circle.
Brandon Frazier robot man is one of my favorite superhero’s. A bitter sweet ending for a character that deserved it.
He's absolutely one of my favorites as well, and his ending was perfect even though it was extremely sad.

Loved watching this with my best friend! It took us a while but this show is top notch!
It really is.
This show means so much to me. It just feels so special. Objectively it might not be the best of DCs live action shows but it is absolutely my favourite. It has gotten me so emotionally invested and I started reading some of the comics after seeing this show. I even went to the last panel for the show at NYCC and it was amazing, the actors were so genuine. It sucks that the show ended earlier than they wanted it to but it’s great to see it getting the appreciation it deserves.
That's amazing! I wish I would've gotten to meet them at comic con. I'm also gonna read the comics at some point.
@@LaughingLuLu it was great. The actor who plays Vic Stone talked about how he grew up watching the original teen Titans and how cool it is to play his favorite character now.

I feel the same way about Titans. It was made by the same people and both just understand what it means to have good characters and story. Both also know what the comics are and respect them. Even if they aren’t the best they still are great shows that should not have been cancelled
Although I really didn't like Titans, I had a lot of respect for what they were doing. It sucks what happened to both shows, but hey, at least we got them at all.
The intro music is so bad ass
For real!
The brain and Mallah do end up being a couple in "My Adventures With Superman".
But Doom Patrol was the best DC show during the arrowverse era hands down. It honestly might be the best DC show out there. The only fault I've ever had with it was COVID. And I feel like they did DID justice. It's a pretty hard thing to get right due to ablist ideas as well as the very different nature of it. Media has this habit of portraying it as something to get rid of, rather than something that's a part of someone. I don't know what it's like, but I'm autistic and our community has the same exact problem with media.
Wow, very well spoken, and I agree with everything you're saying. Also Mallah and Brain look adorable in Superman.
I love this show. This video would be better if you gave reasons why it's interesting, different, and worth people's time instead of spoiling all four seasons of it.
Yeah, I understand. I had a few reasons why I did it, that I explained to a few other people. But I am 100% going to do it differently for the next video I make like this. I'm gonna make sure a chunk of the video at the beginning is spoiler free.
when i saw doom patrol i got a bit confused for one small detail
instead of Cyborg, originally they had Beast Boy on it and i tought i would finally see a ok depiction of Beast boy on a live action
still, i love Cyborg so it wasnt that big of a loss
Yeah it was definitely an interesting choice. I do feel like maybe throwing Beast Boy in there would've made the show have too many main characters, but at the same time, him and Cyborg would have been awesome together.
If you like the Doom Patrol I definitely recommend reading the source material, the Doom Patrol series written by Grant Morrison. There's a lot of differences, particulatly once you get to series 3, but you can see where all the references & tone came from.
I for sure am going to!
Great video! My favourite character was Flex Mentallo but this video doesn't mention him. I guess he didn't play a major part in subsequent seasons, huh?
Although he is a really great and memorable side character, I didn't really talk about the side characters. I just wanted to focus on the main characters.
This is one of my fav shows ever. Not just in terms of the superhero genre.
Great deep dive. Was able to get the info and have fun.
Please check out DC's "Powerless". It's the most underrated superhero show ever that died waaaaay too soon. It's got Alan Tudyk among a terrific cast.
Hmm interesting, I'll have to check it out.
8:36, Character-wise, Laura is one of the more interesting characters on the show due to how, on paper, she’s just a secret villain for the team to fight, but in practice, she’s a deeply conflicted person grappling with guilt her ego refuses to process, which parallels with Rita’s revenge plot against her coming off more as another one of her attempts to reinvent herself, to give herself a role, than as a means to avenge Malcolm (10:56, and to clarify, she was already their friend until she chose her job over the group and the soldier that killed Malcolm was following William Hodges’ order, not Laura’s).
Somehow, even though Rita and the Sisterhood Of Dada were the ones who were wronged, Laura’s position isn’t exactly demonized, as she was juggling the bureaucracy of the Bureau Of Normalcy, the discrimination of metas at the Bureau and rival colleagues looking to take harsher stances on metas, including the Sisterhood.
Rita may have been partly correct in the fact that Laura enjoyed having power or that she had an ego, but Laura was correct in valuing power, as it was, at that time, the only means she had to keep her eccentric, idealistic friends from being weaponized.
This complexity also enriches the rest of the setting, as all the characters are similarly complex individuals unable to fully comprehend the nuances around aspects of their lives due to their traumas (The Underground seeing every man, and the world around them, as a threat to be subjugated because of how Kay’s parents and community mistreated her, Cliff attempting to fix his life in various ways to compensate for his many mistakes as a husband and father, Rita’s obsession with having a role due to her mother grooming her at a young age to be an actress she could profit off of, Larry isolating himself both out of shame and to be spared potential rejection as both a radioactive metahuman and a gay man, and Victor sacrificing his sense of identity into being Cyborg as his latest attempt to earn his approval), their perspectives too mired by their pain and ego for them to move beyond them.
While the rest of the Doom Patrol (with the exception of Larry) begin to flounder about and spiral by Season 3’s end, it’s Laura that is able to acknowledge her mistakes and openly attempts to better herself, unfortunately meaning surrendering herself to Rita, whose identity now revolves around being a domineering team leader that bullies Laura.
Wow, beautifully said. I tried my best to kind of summarize why she was such a complicated character, but this is a really good in depth explanation.
@@LaughingLuLuI guess you could say I’m a little biased. She’s one of my personal favorite characters in the cast, in no small part due to Michelle Gomez (literally Missy from Doctor Who) breathing life into the character.
@@callmev3531 She's 100% my favorite character, behind Cliff.
@@LaughingLuLuCliff actually used to be my favorite until Season 1 created a long period of him being a self-absorbed and mean-spirited child, constantly complaining and throwing judgments with very little self-awareness towards his own faults.
It took away from his initial characterization as being a broken individual rebuilding himself and slowly bonding with others with similar struggles, though this started to come back around Season 3, with his conversation with Sachiko while intoxicated and his attempts at convincing Laura she wasn’t completely “evil” or beyond being a better person as others thought she was, which of course too his own subconscious berating him (ironic since he once forced the team into a therapy meeting while in a manic state and then got forced into therapy with himself by a psychic fog) and his daughter catching him gambling to push him towards actually doing something about his flaws.
I watched this show only because brendan fraser was in it (also alan tudyk), being a good show was just a plus in my book

I thought it was too fractured and not mature enough to tackle the harder stuff. It had an identity crisis that really comes to a crescendo in season 3 and I tapped out by that point.
That's a fair argument. Sometimes the wacky goofiness did outweigh the maturity, so sometimes the mature stuff was hard to take seriously.

I’m a marvel guy, always have been. But I can wholeheartedly say DC kicks marvels ass when it comes to TV/animated stuff. They don’t have the Disney overlord looking over them making sure it’s clean enough. I like the DC shows because the characters are like real people
Exactly!
awesome vid, bravo
Thanks!
The show started really good. Then... It just became a gimmick. Just shock factor and to see how many times they can cram obscenities into each episode. Not to mention rehashing the same emotional beats over and over
That's a fair opinion.
also very annoyed they shuehorned in cyborg, DC keeps trying to shove him into every medium. That should have been beast boy, green lives mater!
Although they definitely did shoehorn him into the show, I think it worked out very well. And yeah they should have had Beast Boy for AT LEAST the final episode.
my question is, is the brain in the jar brainicac? (or however u spell it)
Nah, Brainiac is a Superman/Justice League villain, and he looks like a human but with green skin. The Brain is a Teen Titans/Doom Patrol villain, and he's literally a brain in a jar lol.
@@LaughingLuLu alright thanks sir
wait, the villain of teen titans go ( the brain guy, i just using this show to give more hint of who he are) is married with a gorilla with a boina?
Yup! 😂
This show was all misery.
I've seen a few people on here say they don't like it, and I totally respect your opinion. It's definitely not for everyone.
