      @@anantbhartia8833 Money is money and a million barrrels is still worth 60 million dollars. I worked in the oil industry for many years and doesn't matter what company you are in, a million barrels is still a lot.

      Ideally so but just like how the IMF continues to loan to countries who have defaulted multiple times and knows will default, the goal of preventing the spill and having a trickling effect is the priority.

      there are millions of dollars of oil aboard, all costs should be be recovered for this before any goes anywhere

      Whoever cleans it up should split it up into their own reserves based on the percentage of money and labor they put up to do the job. They should also take the scrap value too! It’s been sitting for years and the owners don’t care about it. If the UN takes the risk, they should get the money. If the UN has a spill while doing so, I doubt the owners will step up and pay for clean up.

    There needs to be an international fund to cleanup situations like this. All oil producers should have to pay a cleanup levy as a percentage per barrel this should be held as a bond.

      The part where parties not involved in the cleanup want money from the oil is so typical.
      Hold the country the ship flies under responsible.
      If they don't pay any other ship flying that flag will not be allowed to enter major ports.

    Why is there even a question who's to sell the crude? Any proceeds from the sale should be used to cover the 100+ million salvage operation.

      Because they need agreement from the local ‘government’ to actually proceed with it. It’s not about the sale. More about who should UN pay to execute the operation.

    according to Bard, the oil aboard the Safer is only worth 80Million, however the UN cannot sell this oil to use it towards the cost of moving it. Just sucks to have these dirty neighbor countries.

    The revenues from the selling of the crude should be used to refund the UN. It is a shame they had to plan this complicated expensive and risky operation to fix other countries' errors and negligence.

    Why is the UN getting involved with this ? If the ship was abandoned and its owners cannot be located can the oil be salvaged and sold to offset the cost of this operation ? This does not seem like something the UN needs to involved in or should be involved with.
