    What this fails to mention is that they might have cost $1m per unit at the time of production, but 20 years on, they’re written down to a value of about $50k each. The British are working on a more advanced replacement - it’s a case of use the older ones or lose ‘em, because it probably costs about $50k each to decommission each one.

    • @XD-cr3du
      @XD-cr3du ปีที่แล้ว +44

      With the very limited amount of storm shadows the U.K. has, and the fact that it's still an incredibly capable weapon even against modern armies as shown in Ukraine. I would be surprised if they would be decommisioned after a replacement came along. It's much more likely they would just be stored in some bunker somewhere to keep in reserve.

    • @d3faulted2
      @d3faulted2 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      @@XD-cr3du part of the issue is that munitions tend to have a shelf life. Something like this cruise missile that uses a small turbo-jet engine would also have maintenance costs associated with it. Hoses, tubes, seals, basically any rubber or plastic part would have a service life and these cruise missiles would need refurbishment over time. So in some ways it makes sense to expend these while procuring new. It also free's up all that maintenance, refurbishment, and storage money to put towards R&D and procurment.

    • @HKim0072
      @HKim0072 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The US values munitions at production cost not replacement value though. I'm pretty sure the military doesn't depreciate their assets like FASB.

    Eventually the GLSDB glide bomb will arrive in Ukraine, supposedly within weeks. It is a HIMARS munition which doubles the range of current HImars missiles Ukraine currently uses. It's a smaller warhead but compensated by being even more surgically precise (one meter circle). The glide bomb piggy backs on older Himars missiles which are plentiful and relatively cheap. At apex of rocket's trajectory the glide bomb releases and glides in free fall to target. The bomb has winglets and is able to alter course as needed, to the extent it can turn back 180 degrees and hit the backslope of a target which might normally offer terrain/obstacle protection from most artillery fired from enemy's location. Finally, the bomb can hit targets painted by airborne or ground based lasers, even hitting moving targets. The delivery has been delayed by a couple months, reportedly because the older Himars rockets have to be painstakingly inspected for safety and reliability before shipment...not just for safety of Himars crews in theater, but also for U.S. aircraft and airmen who will ship the cargo.

    The real benefit of the Storm Shadow is that it keeps Russian colonel and general officers out of the combat zone; since, they know there is very real possibility of being killed once their presence is discovered by Ukraine intelligence. For example, Lt Gen Oleg Tsokov was killed by a Storm Shadow in a local hotel near Berdyansk once his location was discovered by Ukraine intelligence. So if Russian leaders can't maneuver in the combat zone without getting killed, that leaves Russian leadership at the battalion and brigade level, which sucks already, in the hands of captains and lieutenants. Further, the Storm Shadow makes establishing brigade level ammunition and fuel points near the front lines almost impossible. Thus, the Russians can't rapidly re-supply a battalion under attack.

      AGM-158B JASSM-ER
      The US Air Force studied various improvements to the AGM-158, resulting in the development of the JASSM-Extended Range (JASSM-ER), which received the designation AGM-158B in 2002. Using a more efficient engine and larger fuel volume in an airframe with the same external dimensions as the JASSM, the JASSM-ER is intended to have a range of over 575 mi (925 km) as compared to the JASSM's range of about 230 mi (370 km). Other possible improvements were studied but ultimately not pursued, including a submunition dispenser warhead, new types of homing head, and a new engine giving ranges in excess of 620 mi (1,000 km). The JASSM-ER has 70% hardware commonality and 95% software commonality with the original AGM-158 JASSM.
      The first flight test of the JASSM-ER occurred on May 18, 2006 when a missile was launched from a U.S. Air Force B-1 bomber at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The initial platform for the JASSM-ER is the B-1 Bone. While both the original JASSM and the JASSM-ER are several inches too long to be carried in the internal weapons bay of the F-35 Lightning II, the F-35 will be able to carry both missiles externally, which would compromise the aircraft's stealth features.
      The JASSM-ER entered service with the USAF in April 2014. Although the B-1 was initially the only aircraft able to deploy it, it was later integrated onto the B-52, F-15E, and F-16; the B-1B can carry a full load of 24 JASSM-ERs, the B-2 16 missiles,[34][35] and the B-52 outfitted with the 1760 Internal Weapons Bay Upgrade (IWBU) is able to carry 20 JASSM-ERs, eight internally and 12 on external pylons. It is also carried on U.S. Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-35C fighters

EU just said no to Zelenskys request for funding to subsidize the export of Ukraines grain. Biden said the US is out of ammunition too. Zelensky needs to make peace or sacrifice what is left of his country and people. He should of NEVER trusted Biden and Boris who stopped him from any peace deals.

    However: This video suffers of the disease of many youtube videos: superfluous and distracting background music. It's tiring attending to the narration over the background music, masking the topic of the video and mostly adding nothing to the content. Narration or music is fine but one on top of the other is annoying.

    The support we here in the West, for Ukraine has been good. However we need to do more. The Ukrainians are suffering and dying. They are a free people. Welcoming them into the fold of the western markets and adding legal tentacles to help root out corruption, will mean prosperity for all of us. Other countries we've tried to intervene we're kicking and screaming hating us. Ukraine is practically begging to be part of the fold. I believe we have the obligation to help usher them in to their full potential as a democracy. Our role is very similar to what France did to help with the American Revolution. A baby democracy needing help to get on its feet. 🇺🇲💛💙🏁

      Considering the Storm Shadow is an extremely high value strategic weapon for Ukraine, they will be shooting it at such low rates that, as long as they have ONE capable airframe, they are not bottlenecked from shooting as many as Storm Shadows as they need (again, considering that they have so little, that they can't shoot as many as they WANT).
