    What medium is used for germination and how moist does it need to stay? Thanks

    Hi Terry
    Thanks alot for such informative videos. I tried to start my bonsai journey and sowed 5 different plants. I kept the sowed in the e refrigerator for 2 weeks and now they have been out for about a week. But none of the seeds have been germinated yet.
    Do you have any suggestions how can I promote the germination process?

      Growing from seed is most certainly a game of patience. Some seeds can take a while to germinate. Just provide moisture and heat (direct sun is not needed). Don’t overwater. Should germinate eventually.

    is it necessary to cut the sprout? also are root hormones needed or can i do without it? thanks!

      I believe I mentioned that this is optional and is a little more of an advanced technique but it is necessary if you want a very "level" nebari. The technique is most important for smaller shohin pines. No you cannot do without hormone treatment if you do cut the seedling.

    Hello again, Terry. Another great video. I have 300 black pine seeds, and was wondering if you think I should wait until after winter before plant them?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi William. You should stratify them about 1 month or less before beginning of spring. Then plant in spring and they will germinate that much faster and more uniformly. Good luck!

    Why did you cut then re root it? It that to keep it small? I just purchased a kit (I found it at an antique store so it isn't one of yours) and it the instructions are missing so that's why I'm looking at your video. I just want to make sure I do it correctly. Who knows how old the kit I got is so I'm not even sure if the seeds would produce anything! But ..it's worth a shot. 😊

      reason they cut it, is to keep the growth closer to the ground. If you were to let it grow naturally without cutting, you would have a longer trunk before any branches would form.It is, as you'd say, to keep the tree smaller, and more compact.

      I wouldn't do the cutting unless your really good at growing trees .the risks of this technique nearly outweigh the gain. If you want to experiment and have more than a few trees maybe try it on one and see of you can learn from the experience. That being said I've got over a hundred trees and would only try this on a smaller style of bonsai maybe a mame or shohin

      Also did your seeds sprout ? If not order a kit from Amazon there's some great ones out there it's too late to plant anything besides tropical trees and only indoors as the temps begin to drop .Id wait out the winter and plant around mother's day .

    Hi! I received a similar kit from a friend from japan and I only got two trees out of 5 seeds. I tried to repot one and give it to somebody but it didn't make it. So now I only have one which is around 4 inches tall and growing more every day. I didn't cut it because I didn't now that I was supposed to do that. Do you have any tips to help my little tree? Thank you!

    • @terryerasmus
      @terryerasmus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Razvan Iacob I would not suggest you cut it. The risk is too high of you losing this last seedling. Rather let it grow and train it. The seedling cutting method is not a must, it only really makes sense when you’re growing mame or shohin sized trees. However for larger trees you don’t need to perform this technique.

      I wouldn't prune or cut saplings until the 3rd to 5th year besides really minor pinching back or topping

      Ha ha. I cannot say I don't blame you. However you will be surprised how resilient these plants are and it is really the best way to ensure you get the best nebari possible.

    • @CaptainPupu
      @CaptainPupu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I don't see what is the point? The curred seedling will take double time to regrow roots, while the others will grow much bigger and vigorously. Also, cutting such a young seedling for cutting is not the best idea.

    • @segwaysegments
      @segwaysegments 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CaptainPupu you'd be correct for a normal tree but for bonsai this is a well-known practice. Cutting the root will have lower branches closer to the root mass and creates better taper along with better radial roots.

    • @CaptainPupu
      @CaptainPupu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@segwaysegments Yes, i understand that. BUT we are talking about a SEEDLING. Seedlings are weak, they do not tolerate root pruning. Its not like an estabilished 2 year old seedling that you can transfer and prune.

      @@CaptainPupu I get what you're saying and it does sound counter productive but it really does work and root fast.
