FANTASTIC! I happened to just learn about this technique within the past week or so, but this demonstration really gives the complete picture. Thanks so much for sharing this.
I’ve been growing JBP seedlings for the past 4 years, but have never had the courage to do this technique. I will definitely try this next spring. Thank you.
Wow, well done. Thank you so much for this. I Had some red pines, I did experiment with some.. I was sad that they only had a straight root. Unfortunately they didn't last much mire it past this stage..
Hello Sir Why you Do not Plant them immidiatly after you cut the Stem instead you leave them after Dip them in Rooting Hormone? Thanks For Sharing Mate Love your Videos i learn a lot from you..
Great video Jelle and thanks for sharing. I did not know a cut from seeding so small can grow root. Bought some seeds from Amazon but it never spouted. Can you tell me a good vendor / brand who sell black pine seeds that successfully germinated.
Hi ! Thanks for all your sharing ! I would have a question for you or any other bonsai pro ! I received a very very weak Japanese maple young tree (4 years). I am in Switzerland, so the winter can get quite cold, and I'm worried that it won't make it.... Is it an option to keep it indoor for one winter as I don't see how it will survive without? I know it's not ideal, but would it survive that way and enable its recovery? Thanks in advance for your answers !
Keeping it indoors will weaken it more. Do you have a shed that stays a little warmer? A little bit of frost & prolonged cold is good for deciduous trees
@@GrowingBonsai Thank you so much for your answer ! Unfortunately I don't but I will try to leave it at my neighbour's place then, if that's the best solution, I will make try to make it work ! Thanks again for your help ! And amazing videos, I learned a lot with you !
Could you please send me details about a decent (universal) soil for pine I have 4 seedlings from scotch pine from 2023 my first attempt in the moment I have a mix of fine gravel, small pine chips, some perlite, ericaceous compost/ acidic/ that is . This year starting to grow rapidly but I’m worried about this mix could be improved more draining with something? Location Scotland/A lot of rain;)/ kind regards Zoltan
Dag Jelle, mooie video terug. Ik heb tijdens onze zomervakantie in Toscane zaden verzameld van cipres en pinus. Nu heb ik deze in de koelkast staan, weet niet of dit een goede behandeling is? Hebt u enig advies voor mij? Dank bij voorbaat.
I fertilize quite heavily in fall, and fertilize late in spring. The nutrients are used to prepare the buds and sprouts for next season, in line with natural decay in early fall.
Filled with confidence from my JBP air layer, I might have to try this next! Now to find some JBP seeds . . . Not that I need more plants to nurse through an Australian summer, though!
@@GrowingBonsai LOL! So it is the adults version of "Please Mum, can I keep him? He followed me home!" Only instead of a "stray" dog, it is a "stray" plant!
Such a great episode Jelle. I was really excited for you and the results you got. So i am guessing you carried out the cutting operation near the end of May?
Had no idea you could take cuttings from seedlings. Plants never cease to amaze me. Thanks for sharing this
Cool right!?
Nice! I've done the same this year and i managed to root 27 of the initial 33. Great succes!
Nice work!
Nicely done, explained and filmed! Thank you for another good video, like always! 👌👌👊👍
Glad you enjoyed it

You're very welcome!

You do not have to do this to all seedlings right? You can just do a handfull. It works surprisingly reliable!
Great video Jelle
I’m going to try this if my seeds grow next year thanks for the video mate 👍👍👍
No problem 👍
Love your videos so much!!! So when will you open your nursery?😅
Hahaha, not planning to! Buut.. I will come and do workshops :)
@GrowingBonsai how much you charge for a workshop and are you ever in Switzerland?🤩
Not going to lie, I checked the date of this video's posting to make sure it wasn't an April fool's joke. Cool concept!!
Why would this be a joke? A very common technique for pine seedlings!
Hello Jelle. Great video! I'm going to try this next year!
THis of course means, sowing seeds in winter!
Is this something that you might do to dawn redwood seedlings? I have a few dozen sprouting right now.
Wow, well done. Thank you so much for this. I Had some red pines, I did experiment with some.. I was sad that they only had a straight root. Unfortunately they didn't last much mire it past this stage..
so.. try again untill you are succesfull! :)
Do you have to use bag. Is it better to use it
Hello Sir Why you Do not Plant them immidiatly after you cut the Stem instead you leave them after Dip them in Rooting Hormone?
Thanks For Sharing Mate Love your Videos i learn a lot from you..
This way, the hormones stay on longer, as planting them will always brush off some of them. I tell myself this helps :)
Hi Jelle, would this method work with other species e.g birch and maple?
Hello. Can you please tell me if this is how the roots of Japanese white pine are cut?
Great video Jelle and thanks for sharing. I did not know a cut from seeding so small can grow root. Bought some seeds from Amazon but it never spouted. Can you tell me a good vendor / brand who sell black pine seeds that successfully germinated.
Hard to tell. I was unhappy with the germination here myself :(
Any advise on where to get black pine seeds?
This is tricky. I try to get them from treeseed dealers, rather than bonsai stores
Loved the vid! Did you poke holes in that plastic bag!? Also how often do you water while in the bag!?
No I did not. The bag is close and therefor I also do not water, untill I open the bag up (when after some 6 weeks I suspect rooting)
@@GrowingBonsai cheers I appreciate the reply.

Interesting video Jelle. Do you think this technique would work with Scots Pine in a similar way?
I THINK it would, but I do not KNOW!

Dank bij voorbaat.
meestal kunnen zaden uit regionen waar de winter niet echt koud is gezaaid worden zonder koude behandeling.
Nice! I'll try this with Pinus haleppensis
Do let me know how that turns out!
It being the first week of fall can I fertilize by trees? Most are in year two and three.
I fertilize quite heavily in fall, and fertilize late in spring. The nutrients are used to prepare the buds and sprouts for next season, in line with natural decay in early fall.
I wonder if this will apply to Pinus sylvestris too..... I think I will try it.

I tried back tracking from a date reference you made when you showed them 2-3 months later.@@GrowingBonsai
is it OK if i don't cut the root out ?
Where do you put them for winter?
These are in a shed right now, behind the window.
I always wonder what is the point to this. Now I know! Thanks Jelle!
Glad to hear you got something out of this!
Hi, where is the best place to over winter cuttings
I keep these outside, except for during harsh frost.
@@GrowingBonsai thank you xx
I'm kind of new to this whole process. If they already had roots as seedlings. Why did you cut the root off and propagate them.
It is to grow a better root base and also to produce buds low down the truck
That's literally the first thing he explains...
@kiranramjiawan5962 that's great thanks,
Check the first 2 minutes of the video. It is to ensure the lowest branches are lower, and to improve the rootspread.
@@GrowingBonsai that's great cheers.
