Im just getting into Bonsai, my mother had some Ponderosa Pines and i believe blue spruces she wanted removed. I dug them up and am letting them grow for a few weeks in some pots while i watch videos and learn about the hobby. Thanks for the videos they help me get ideas and enjoy the challenge and success of Bonsai more.

Congratulation for your movíe. I live in Brazil and i have been trying to deal with black pines for a long time. Last year one of pines completely dried for unknow reason. In 3 months we are going to winter and i will try to follow your advices. Hopefully i will have succes.

I found a mother load of small old pine near me on a rock hill . All look to be about 10 years old growing in the woods. Thin sandy soil on top of rock. You can nearly dislodge by hand and they are all bent and curved
I have a Siberian pine. It is a close relative of the Japanese white pine. It grows VERY slowly.
My white pine wasn't easy to find in Melbourne Australia, so much so that I'm hesitant to trim it , my yard isn't large enough to support a fully grown tree , every year I hesitate it doubles in size ..my aim is to keep it about 8ft high , but unlike other trees seems I cannot cut the leader on the pine to reduce size. Either way I'll have to prune it this season ..after discovering these videos I'm pretty sure I won't kill it . Thanks

10:30 this bonsai is so large that it looks like a niwaki. I like it. Interesting to see the foliage pads are created using bonsai technique, not the pompom topiary like in niwakis.

Better pay close attention here folks. If you try to prune a white pine like you do a black pine it's going to be game over for you.
thats what I thought too. he says you can take it of completly but then the branch is dead, or not?
Luckma1 you just won’t get anymore growth from that cut point. You dead-head the shoot right then abs there. UNLESS, you leave at least 5mm and atleast 2-4 sheaths of needle clusters on the candle. This method encourages the back budding in that spot on a white pine.
Black Pines you remove all the candle small or large to reset balance of bud and shoot growth and then bud and shoot select, as well a needle pluck to balance energy in the fall (September/October) just after you start feeding heavily again after the summer of not feeding for summer dormancy.
So true! And all those red flowers underneath the way too long elongated candles are a sign of wrong feeding and wrong water management!!! 😱

How does someone grow a very large bonsai like the one at 10:30? Do you have to let it free grow for many years and then trim it back? I know that’s what you’d do with maples and deciduous trees but know wkth pines you can’t cut there branches back heavy to start creating more branches, you can just prune their candles. So I’m confused how you can create such nice branch form
And taper on a pine that size if you’re not able to cut it back hard. Can anyone help me. Have some nice pine shrubs I want to start forming into bonsai form in my Japanese garden

Yes I would imagine so as long as you keep their root warmer.... Just dont let roots freeze bc while underground they actually stay much much warmer than in a pot above ground, and keep them out of the wind.
How did you get your JBPines so vigorous, the candles going skyhigh! Did you use any special fertilizer or treatment?

@@k.h.9968 Hoi K.H. Ik weet niet zeker of ik het met je eens ben, maar dat is prima. Ik volg online lessen van Ryan Neil, hij is den expert. Wat Peter Chan doet lijkt op een eind weg knippen. Je ziet dat hij niet gedetailleerd knipt. Hij knipt maar wat en daardoor knipt hij dus ook bestaande naalden door midden wat zorgt voor bruine naalden met minder fotosynthetisch vermogen. Ryan Neil geeft aan dat er 3 groepen dennen zijn: long needle single flush, short needle single flush en multiflush. De long needle single flush, waaronder japanse witte den, daarvan moet je de kaarsen laten staan tot de naalden uitkomen en uitharden en dan pas terug knippen. Groet, Michael
@@MichaelMeeusen Ja, ja, ik ken Ryan ook van Mirai bonsai. Ik vind hem ook goed, hij is zeer technisch onderlegd. Met leerzame video's op TH-cam. Mijn ervaring met pinchen is, op een pinus parviflora negishi, dat de kaarsen weer gaan groeien als je voor de uitloop van de naalden pinched. Dan kan je ze weer halveren. Dubbel werk dan. Dus inderdaad ik wacht nu op de naalden uitloop en dan de helft pinchen (max.) en eventueel twee kaarsen (lateral) op uiteinde tak laten staan. Trouwens Bjorn van Eise-en is ook een goede. Groet.

They work, but they're single flush pines so you want to approach pruning the same way you would prune a mugo pine. . Also, they tend to have very long needles so a larger tree would be more aesthetically pleasing proportionally..

Not recommended, that's like the equivalent of cutting a trees leaves in half, can really make the tree struggle.

@@RefayetAhmed I've been tempted to do it myself before, but I think the better way to deal with that is wiring branches away from each other, or cutting off the branches that might be crossing into the path of other branches

If you let bonsai trees go to seed, and take the seed from every generation, how many generations would it take for the tree to evolve to bonsai itself?

Bonsai trees are normal trees that are pruned to stay small. They don't evolve into this size

I love your videos on Bonsai. They are so informative and reinvigorate me each time to push forward with my bonsai knowledge. Do you have any good advice on pruning and building structure in Junipers? I live in the city and work hard to make my green mound juniper happy inside (I know junipers are outdoor trees but I try to keep it outside during the day or shine some light on it if it doesnt have enough during the day) but am not confident on how to prune and shape it into a good bonsai.
Hello friend, this is 3 years old, but I have a Chinese juniper I just bought on sale because it was half dead. I figured, “Perfect, I’ll end up pruning off half of it anyway!” I pruned over 75% of the foliage and branches (leaving mostly sacrificial branches and some growth on the ones I will keep), but left the entire root system in tact. It has some very small new growth on the branches I kept for bonsai, and a little more growth on the branches I left for sacrifice branches. One huge thing I’ve learned is 1 to 2. One branch should split to two, that should split to two, so on and so forth. Chinese junipers are very hardy in my zone and so it has no problems so far. Hopefully this helps whoever gets this recommended and sees this comment :)

i was under the impression that pine pruning should be done with your fingertips, not scissors, because any needles you cut will go brown

Out here in Virginia USA, eastern white pines Pinus strobus, 5 needles and Virginia pines which have two, I’m experimenting with a Virginia pine because I dug it up for free. It looks like a Charlie Brown tree but I’m determined to make a beautiful bonsai out of it, thank you so much for all this wonderful information and entertainment 🙏

It took me a while but I get it now, peters trees may be rough and his techniques sometimes coarse, but we have to remember he has thousands of trees to maintain. It's no wonder he seems to rush through the trees and not give them the care and attention to detail it's final owner would. Also the customer wants to buy a semi raw tree to style and mould into their own image, if he made every tree look well finished they would lose their appeal to alot of hobbyists. It's not like in Japan where the trees are bought by millionaire CEOs to exhibit and be maintained professionally.
And you don't think that that fact is giving off the completely wrong impression and idea to all the novice newbie Bonsai enthusiasts that see his videos?!

Too bad he actually gives bad advice. A JWP should not be candle pruned, not even half the candle. Only short needle single flush pines and multi flush pines can be candle pruned

Very interesting video, I just went into my backyard and grabbed a few pine cones to see if I could find any viable seeds and found hundreds, they are germinating now and tap roots are showing, going to pot them in small pots today, I have a bonsai money tree that I bought already started, it's about 5 years old now but I'm excited to try for myself from seed

Brutal information. All of those pines have very different requirements and treating them with this one brush approach will end in disaster. Especially with younger tree which do not have the vigour of what he is working on. Ryan neil offers good bonsai advice including advise on pines.
Andrew Tait a pine tree with any less vigor than what he is working on, shouldn't be worked on at all. He's obviously working on trees that have been growing for a while that have a strong root system and decent vigor. No trees should be worked on until they reach this point
