Crime drama with mystery and gore scenes sounds like a love letter to giallo to me. This is still my most anticipated movie of the year along with Longlegs. Very jealous that you got to see it early.
She said there’s no big Giallo influence. Malignant was another movie that was supposed to have a big Giallo influence but in the end it wasn’t more than the look of the killer that was Giallo inspired.

I went back and rewatched X and it's still good even now. Basically Texas chainsaw massacre and I think we can all agree is the best of the series. The second is not too bad and this new one is the worst. Each one is a stand-alone story so you don't need to watch any of them to enjoy the others.
Just rewatched both Pearl and X (in that order) last night to refresh my mind even though I’ve seen them each many many times 😂 I’m so excited for Maxxxine but lowered my expectations just a bit. Glad you got to see this one early!!🤩
My big issue with the film was hiding the obvious like he was keeping the audience in suspense. The reveal was so obvious that I was hoping West had something else up his sleeve, but when he didn’t, it turns into a weak 3rd act. There’s a lot to love about the film, though.

I rewatched "Pearl" then "X" in that exact ordered, then... all the time I was watching Maxxxine, Bobby-Lynne and Jackson kept coming in my head, with their little "Landslide" tune. It felt a bit sad. 😞
I honestly love how Ti just suddenly dropped this trilogy into our laps. I don't think any of us saw this coming. I Mia has been on fire. X and Pearl in 2022, Infinity Pool in 2023 and now MaXXXine. As a side note, I deliberately ignored the trailers. The studios don't knows how to make them spoiler free anymore.
I totally agree with the lack of focus and I wish the movie leaned more into the fun over the top stuff. It finally released in my country so I had to go back to your review :)
I wanted to come back and rewatch your review now that I’ve seen it! The stories are all so messy and the “mystery” element is so easy to figure out. And all the side characters were quite flat :( Mia Goth as Maxine is great tho, and Ti West’s vision really came through in his direction and editing. It’s a stunning film to look at. My favorite thing is that Maxine is an out of control driver 😭😂
It felt a bit sleazy like '10 To Midnight', "Maniac" and William Friedkin's 'Cruising', but that's what I loved about it. However it got a tad corny once the killer was revealed, but i still thought it was pretty good. Kevin Bacon steels the Spotlight and nails his role. Mia Goth had some great 80's attitude like Linda Blaire from 'Savage Streets'. The detectives were really kinda useless, but that is very 80's style in Horror flicks of the era. .Best soundtrack ever! 80's rule
I just saw this last night and I think I quite enjoyed it! Perhaps not as much as X but more than Pearl. I think it's another fun pivot on horror subgenera to the 80s New York shot Italian slasher mystery and it completely nails that aesthetic with the way its shot and the stock characters (though if it was being true to it I think the gay friend would have had to die sooner 😄) but perhaps more importantly it's a nice thematic wrap up on everything they set up in the first two.
I honestly hope ti west does make another film in this series. It would be interesting to see if maybe he do Maxxxine as an older woman like pearl and maybe she snaps like pearl.

The opening and closing of your door (with a spooky shadow that looked like a man outside on the wall) had me screaming “Emma, lookout! It’s a ghost!” I had to watch a second time to get the content. 😱😂👻 Looking forward to Maxxxine and completing the trilogy. I definitely need to revisit X, it’s been awhile.
I finally watched the movie. LOVED the look and feel but didn’t like the plot, and I feel like a lot of the middle was spinning wheels until the big reveal at the end and then it was predictable by then. I also feel it was quite derivative of modern 80s “tribute” movies - the Final Girls used Bette Davis eyes in the climax of the movie, AHS 84 did the Richard Ramirez stuff already, etc. I found myself constantly being reminded of other modern movies when watching this; meanwhile during X I remember thinking how amazing it was that it felt like a TCM tribute and then eventually the plot was so captivating that it entered the background of my brain.
I'm re-watching Pearl and X this weekend, I love them so much. Thank you for presenting your point of view and making us go and watch the movie with the correct mindset when it premieres!

Ti West is using this trilogy to pay homage to different cinematic eras. I think what people expected with Maxxxine was an homage to 80s slashers, and instead this was an homage to different kind of 80s horror: the 80s De Palma films, glossy, highly stylized, over-the-top horror that deals with moral corruption.
I totally see what you’re saying, but my issue with this is that those De Palma movies felt way more focused and Maxxxine wants to take from seedy 80s slashers when it feels like it, so it feels like a mix of a lot of things without ever being one thing
wow walking to the cinema late june like it isn't freezing right now lol I've been looking forward to MaXXXine but not as much as I was for Pearl. Pearl just grabbed me in all the right ways from the character to the cinematography style. I think the trailer for MaXXXine doesn't seem very character driven, and you did mention that the movie wasn't either. Its interesting though because its only set a few years after X. Still, I do love me an 80s style movie so will definitely be watching when I am able to! I wonder if a fourth movie could be about Maxine today or in a few years so we can see if she made it famous or not.

Even if it's not that scary, I do love a good crime thriller, and I love the visual aesthetic apparent in the trailer. It almost could make me forget how goofy the 80s actually were.

Probably my fave movie trilogy honestly lol. Cheesy, campy, funny, and each story is so vastly different but yet connected and yet very simple plot that lead to a whole trilogy.
So sad I have to wait until it comes on VOD to watch because it's not playing in my country, but nonetheless super excited!! I love X to death and I like Pearl, so hopefully this can at least top the latter for me

X was incredible so I was really excited to see this. A bit of a let down from the other 2 but great so Goth in the part again. Know I'm just holding out hope for Long legs. I saw X and Pearl multiple times in the theater. I most likely will not see this one agaiñ until it's streaming
just watched and i think it has a lot of giallo themes and filmmaking styles such as how the killer was framed (leather gloves and faceless disguise) and even the killers over the top and dramatic performance. also the idea of introducing characters just to kill them off right after i do wish the movie had more on-screen kills though

You've given me fair warning about the gore, but I don't know about the plot involving a fictionalized version of the real killer known as the Night Stalker. I lived in the area where the stalker began his terror reign in 1985 and it wasn't in Hollywood. So, I will proceed with caution. 😉
Did this movie have chase scenes involving the killer like in Scream? Or do we only see the killer's hands, feet and back like in Italian horror films? Another question: does he look like a slasher?
Ooooooooh I might actually watch this. I think it might be a bit much for me horror-wise (avoided X and Pearl for this reason) but I love a good spooky whodunnit and from the looks of things this will be more of a horror-thriller?
I was equally disappointed. Overall rating was like a 5.5 out of 10. X Was worlds better. Even Pearl was worlds better. Both were original and “out there”. Maxxxine just seemed forced and West seemed confused. The only thing I loved was Mia goths continued excellence. Love your content! Seeing longlegs this weekend!!! Extremely excited

X was incredible so I was really excited to see this. A bit of a let down from the other 2 but great so Goth in the part again. Know I'm just holding out hope for Long legs. I saw X and Pearl multiple times in the theater. I most likely will not see this one agaiñ until it's streaming

just watched and i think it has a lot of giallo themes and filmmaking styles such as how the killer was framed (leather gloves and faceless disguise) and even the killers over the top and dramatic performance. also the idea of introducing characters just to kill them off right after
i do wish the movie had more on-screen kills though
I felt the gloves were the only part, no cherry blood :(

Thanks for the review, Emma. Always appreciate your insight, especially with a film like MaXXXine. I will watch the film, but maybe not in the theater. You've given me fair warning about the gore, but I don't know about the plot involving a fictionalized version of the real killer known as the Night Stalker. I lived in the area where the stalker began his terror reign in 1985 and it wasn't in Hollywood. So, I will proceed with caution. 😉

Did this movie have chase scenes involving the killer like in Scream? Or do we only see the killer's hands, feet and back like in Italian horror films? Another question: does he look like a slasher?

Ooooooooh I might actually watch this. I think it might be a bit much for me horror-wise (avoided X and Pearl for this reason) but I love a good spooky whodunnit and from the looks of things this will be more of a horror-thriller?

I was equally disappointed. Overall rating was like a 5.5 out of 10. X Was worlds better. Even Pearl was worlds better. Both were original and “out there”. Maxxxine just seemed forced and West seemed confused. The only thing I loved was Mia goths continued excellence. Love your content! Seeing longlegs this weekend!!! Extremely excited
