These videos are bittersweet. Jordan was unbelievable, but it also makes you realize how incredibly fun it was watching the NBA in the 90’s. Haven’t watched in years.
It is very saddening to heard Chicago's fans [particularly those who saw him competing during that first three peat] bringing the man down. He had incredible clutch stretches during those three playoffs years. Of course, he wasn't the same players after he left Chicago, but he was playing his role at perfection under Phil Jackson's commands.
That first Bulls team was not the greatest team of all time. They had the greatest player of all time. None of them guys were all stars with that first title, and only Pip became an allstar with the next 2.
My mom took me to this game for my 7th birthday. It was MJ’s first home game back from temporary retirement against Orlando. At that game I was decked out in Orlando gear and also wore my Shaq shoes. Don’t remember much about the game itself. Growing up in NW Indiana, I always for some reason rooted for whoever the Bulls played, probably cuz I got so tired of year after year watching MJ win every season. At this moment in my early life I was a huge Shaq fan and seeing him come to Chicago was my birthday gift. Thanks Mom!
I always feel great everytime Andy makes a throwback video about NBA history instead of focusing too much on the present era including his How Great was NBA Player actually documentaries.
I was so pumped in '95 when MJ came back out of retirement who last played in '93. I had a feeling he would need time to get close to what he did in the 80s and early 90s. That #45 jersey number looked awful. It was a good choice by MJ switching back to #23.
Way too many LeBron fans in the comments celebrating MJ's defeat here. He sure did bounce back though, didn't he? And he didn't need to flee his franchise three times to form new superteams to do it. Or are people going to say that adding Dennis Rodman is the equivalent of all the all stars and superstars LeBron needed to play with on four different teams in order to win 4 championships in 20 seasons? Give me a break. MJ took responsibility for the defeat to Orlando (the sports media was different back then in that they didn't pass the blame around like they've done consistently for a certain 4 time champ today; no, if you were the guy, then you got raked over the coals for your team coming up short) and worked hard in the offseason so that when he got a chance to play a full season again, there would be no let down. And as we know, the team gelled like no other before, won 72 games, and went on to threepeat.
MJs story is an open book, everybody knew that the Bulls with a rusty MJ and no power forward would not win the finals especially facing the powerhouse Magic
I was a huge NBA fan back during the 90s. I remember when MJ retired on October 6, 1993 and how much of a shock it was back then. After winning his 3rd straight title, I was sure they were going to be competitive again. But his retirement left a void in NBA basketball. I remember watching the Bulls for the first time without MJ on Christmas Day of 1993. It was the Bulls against the Magic. Their team had Pete Myers as his replacement. Penny Hardaway showed right off the bat he was the real deal. That feeling of void persisted until March of 1995. It was so nice to see him back. New number (#45). Then later new shoes (Jordan 11 Concord). Then another pair of shoes to comply uniform shoes (Penny's Nike Air Flight One). And losing in the second round to the Magic.
These videos give so much insight into the politics of playing sports, the relationships with the players involved and so much more. I get that some people are driven to win/be #1 etc. and challenging "breaking down" whatever dominant team or individual is also a focus. I'm just glad the Micheal Jordan remained consistent regardless of who said what, as I can only imagine what it felt like to choose to be in the midst of so much drama and still execute in ways that he ended up doing. To constantly be around so much negative energy, talk and hearsay and still be able to gracefully execute is a blessing. To hear some of his team mates speak well of him/playing with him was definitely a blessing that was meant to play a role in a bigger picture.
If they made it to the finals, it would have been the greatest storyline ever. On one side is a vulnerable MJ and the bulls while on the other side is the 6th seeded defending champs who are also bruised themselves but fought on with heart and destroyed the league mvp's team on their way to the finals.
If you look past the stats, the way Jordan played in 92-93 before his retirement was actually similar to how he played post retirement. He no longer jumped out of the gym except on a few instances. He beat teams more with jumpshots (the 54 points vs. Knicks in the 93 ECF was entirely jumpshots) Jordan just had to get back into basketball shape in 95 which didn't take him long.
Exactly they really trying to act like MJ was soooooo Bad in 1995. I mean he was clearly step slow yet still best player in the league by end of season.. I say main reason loss cause had no big man presence and having Horace Grant on opposite team beat u didn't help
Impact MJ's legacy how? in the 1995 series against the Magic, he averaged 31 pts, 6.5 rbs, 2.5 stls, 1.8 blks on 48% shooting and 4 tov. He made ONE infamous mistake at the end of game one, but the rest was the Bulls' lack of an interior presence and rebounding.
The author of this video is a kid. You can tell he wasn't around in 1995. When he said MJs 1st game being vs the Pacers was sudden. When in fact it was well known in advance that was the 1st game he was scheduled to play. I cant even get into the other nonsense he said. TH-cam... where ignorance is given a voice.
The only reason MJ came back to Basketball in 95 was because of the Players Strike in MLB that ended up canceling the 94 World Series and it looked unlikely there would be a 95 Season.
Or he timed it just right to dodge Hakeem and the Rockets, so we'll never know what would have happened if they played in the Finals against each other.
Rodman makes the difference, coming to 1995-1996 season, if they did not get rodman that year, i think there is possibility of losing again that season cause rodman helps them stabilizing their defense that year resulting to another three peat.
There's a reason why Rodman was considered as the finals mvp in 1996. But that doesn't hold anything against jordan career or resume. Bron and Kobe all had teammates who helped them in moments like Horry in the wcf vs the kings where he hit that shot when the kings were up 2-1 and gasol put back vs the thunder etc and Ray Allen shot vs the spurs also bosh rebound which saved the heat from losing
Horace Grant has no respect today. Even coming from Chicago's fans! In his Bulls' career, Grant was a great role player and some of his performances saved the Bulls during those playoffs stretches. Jordan stated himself they were one [Horace Grant] away from winning in 1995... which eventually led to Rodman's arrival in the Windy City. the only impact in MJ's legacy is a positive one, he took it personally and only lost 10 reg season games the very next year. dude is a maniac. sure his 96 finals wasn't that great but lets thank payton for that in the last 3 finals games.
What I feel this season says about Jordan is that no the scrutiny and how many are watching, he was unafraid. They made the playoffs and eventually lost to a strong 1 seed, but he was still himself come playoff time. It was Jordan’s first season back plus the roster wasn’t deep enough yet for real contention. Which we later learned when they added the Worm. 👍🏼👍🏼
In 1994 there was a strike in the MLB, and in January 1995, they were going to start the season with replacement players. And Micheal Jordan said he had no interest in crossing the picket line to play in replacement games.

It was even made better without the internet bc you could hear big ass urban legends and belive it. I had a bulls jacket every elementary school year. It seriously was elvis×one direction vibest
Missing a bit of context there Andy, it's rather important. I don't think you intended it, but Jordan had no plans of giving up baseball. There was a lockout, and a picket line which he vowed he would not cross. So he came back to the NBA. Rest is history.
Bulls problem in 95 was they had lost Horace Grant to Orlando and when MJ returned late in season it was too late to make trade for legit power forward, then in off season Krause made heist of century trading Perdue for Rodman and rest is history with repeat 3 peat
This series loss to the Magic is definitely brought up to tarnish his legacy, which is funny because if this is the worst blemish on it than that speaks to how spectacular a career he had. It doesn't get overlooked by Jordan fans either, it's just viewed at be as big a blemish as much as LeBron fans demand we do because the following year the Bulls swept this same Magic team with Dennis Rodman being the only real key acquisition.
Rodman was kinda a big acquisition. Like, HUGE. As the video points out Horace Grant was the difference between the Magic and Bulls. This 95 Bulls team didnt have either Grant or Rodman on the roster and it really showed. Kukoc coming off the bench was so much better. Pippen and Rodman at the 3 and 4 was insanely good. Much better than a pretty good Pippen and Kukoc of 95.
It’s an era where team strategies matters. No legitimate PF is what killed the Bulls that season not MJ’s “rustiness”. Like you said, that’s why Horace Grant was like a kid in a candy store in that series.
There was a variety of factors that lead to the Bulls losing. Chief among them is the Magic were just flat out better. The Bulls also not having a legitimate PF and Jordan's fatigue issues(commonly and mistakenly called rustiness) are other factors.
@@meg-k-waldren you make my point for me einstein. I watched & lived that whole season. It’s not like Phil wanted to, but that’s basically all he can do. No PF was the bulls main problems through out that season.
Jordan was a good baseball player my guy. Another year or 2 he would've been called up to the majors. For anyone to be removed from the game for a decade and already be starting in AAA in their first year is unheard of.
Its hard to put into perspective how much the early 90's bulls teams dominated the playoffs before he left.. IMO he left basketball because he was just bored. but again... thats 100% opinion from being a huge NBA fan during that time.
Great stuff Andy! ‘95 was around the time I started following the NBA, so this era has a special place in my heart 🏀 Didn’t MJ get fined for changing #45 to #23 mid-way through that Orlando series?
Actually I believe Jordan trained at Bulls Berto Center for a week or two if not more before the comeback announcement was made. The training center was open 24/7 for all players on the team and Jordan was known to pop in to work out or shoot hoops while he was retired on occasions.
The Bulls were actually the betting favorites to beat Orlando. Bettors didn't like betting against Jordan, and the Bulls were pretty strong down the stretch, as mentioned in the video. Before the series started, the Bulls were -185 and the Magic were +165. I don't know who was the favorite going into the playoffs, but the Bulls were +500.
Imagine dominating a pro sport so significantly that you actually get bored with it and decide to try something else. That's what happened with Jordan. He won 3 championships in a row and wasn't chasing anybody as far as any particular NBA player because he already was considered by most to be the best basketball player who ever lived even at that point. I don't think he would have taken that time off though had his father not died. I believe that hit him much harder than anybody knew.
Jordan may not have been the player he was at first before quitting the first time, but I always say that just to put on a pair of shorts, a jersey and sneakers and sit on an NBA bench, you have to have game!
The media tries to blame Jordan's "rust" as to why the Magic beat Chicago. THE TRUTH IS SIMPLE: Orlando's big guys were MUCH BETTER than Chicago's big guys. Jordan and Pippen actually had nice stats especially when you consider that Penny, Nick, Bowie, and Shaw were tall, athletic defenders. Scoring: Grant 108 Kukoc 69 Shaq 146 Longley, Wennington, and Perdue 92
The truth. Also Orlando had some timely 3 pt shooting to close out game 6. They were used to beating up on Ewing and his band of bricklayers on the perimeter in the playoffs annually that b4 that series Game 6: Orlando 12/24 from 3pt land.
@@FuShengAlex If Orlando was healthy in 1996, it would have been a great series. Grant was out after game 1 and Scott and Anderson had chronic injuries that year. Bulls probably would have been slight favorites if both teams were 100%, I would guess Bulls in 7. I think Orlando was better than Seattle for instance.
Exactly!! I get so tired of people making excuses for MJ but never quit bashing LeBron. Who knows, if MJ didn't run away to play little league softball maybe Horace would've felt compelled to stay in Chicago with MJ'S influence???
@@plainman9887 Krause wanted to trade Grant in summer of 1993. The salary cap would not allow big contracts for Jordan, Pippen, and Grant. Along with Jordan’s father being murdered, it was probably the reason Jordan retired. When Jordan left, the need to trade Grant disappeared and they tried to resign him. But Grant decided to go to Florida and play with Shaq.
How different would NBA history be if the Baseball strike never happened? How different would Michael Jordan's career and his number of rings be? How different would MLB history be?
“Gambling debt” what? Why tf would that matter to David Stern? He didn’t pay MJ’s bills. MJ would only be suspended if he was betting on games he played in. Kinda like Pete Rose 0:45
I joked with my friends that MJ was coming back to the NBA last year to help Lebron win his last ring. Took about a month for them to realize that the reason there wasn’t any news about it was because he wasnt
In the Bulls quest for a 4 peat, if MJ had not retired for Baseball prior to the start of the 93/94 season, I think MJ's Bulls vs Hakeem's Rockets would've been the best ever NBA finals, would MJ win his 4th straight NBA title who knows but in theory if the 94 finals was Bulls vs Rockets with MJ I think for sure it will go the distance to game 7. In contrast, that 93/94 Rockets team with Hakeem all season long were truly an elite team with Hakeem winning MVP honors.
The video wasn't too bad, although I did notice a major contradiction.. Early in the video, he says Jordan's agents said that Michael Jordan might not have stopped playing baseball, because he loved the being around the guys with no fanfare.. Then later in the video he says Jordan returned for the love of the game.. This isn't one of those times that two things can be true, it's either or on this one
Losing to the Magic while he was clearly rusty and not in top form was literally what catapulted Jordan to become possessed with getting back to the top. Next season 72-10 regular season and 15-3 playoffs with the ring. 87-13 total, only 3 losses in the playoffs.
Not a popular opinion here but, Jordan's 6 titles and legacy is in part due to his 1-1/2 season break from the game. That allowed him to recharge mentally and also give Phil Jackson and Pippen a much needed break from him as well. I know many like to say "he would've won 10 titles" if he didn't retire in 93 and kept playing beyond 98, but Phil Jackson and Steve Kerr said themselves that wouldn't have been the case. Both have said (Phil Jackson in books and on Kerr on NBA Roundtable) that a 3-peat is the most emotionally draining thing you can possibly go through.
Intro fails to mention the baseball strike that made Jordan come back to basketball. And how Jordan quickly improved at the bat. His second year was ALOT better than his first.
Getting revenge against the Magic in the ECF the next year, setting a then-record for team wins, winning a 4th chip and dropping arguably the most popular sneaker to this day more than soothes wounds I’m sure 😂. Small blemish to the “fairy tale” legacy
I think no one really knocks him for that season, cause, he came back for the last 17(?) games of the season, got tossed by THE FAVOURITES TO WIN IT ALL and then, preceded to win 3 more championships, while DOMINATING THE GAME. Could they have won 8 straight, if he'd never retired? Maybe. Maybe not. In fairness that Rockets Team was real solid n it would've been hard to stop The Dream. For me, honestly, The Goat, up to now... not just in Basketball, but, probably all sports. No athlete has ever been more competitive than him .
There is a misconception that MJ did not play well in 1995 and that's why the Bulls were eliminated. That is simply not true, MJ played very well and I would argue that he was better in 1995 than the next season. The 1995 MJ had everything, his team did not. It was not MJ that was worse, the Bulls were worse as a team, Horace Grant had left and he left a huge gap in the Bulls' frontline that was filled by Dennis Rodman in the 1995-1996 season. In fact had Jordan not made this ridiculous turnover in the end of the first game against Orlando it is very likely that the Bulls could be at the finals that year.
I think that's nick macmillan from the magic. Funny that it stung him at the free throw line against the Rockets in the finals that the Rockets won in 95. Jordan let NBA know though the next three years getting 3 more rings. He was the same. We'll never have a great player like him ever again.

Indeed, this doesn't even remotely compare to the 2011 Finals.
Michael Jordan 🔥🔥🔥
Great video
It’s an era where team strategies matters. No legitimate PF is what killed the Bulls that season not MJ’s “rustiness”. Like you said, that’s why Horace Grant was like a kid in a candy store in that series.
MJ was objectively rusty that season though. Check his shooting %’s
There was a variety of factors that lead to the Bulls losing. Chief among them is the Magic were just flat out better. The Bulls also not having a legitimate PF and Jordan's fatigue issues(commonly and mistakenly called rustiness) are other factors.
@s 4 per game is definitely un-Jordan like. Chalk it up to his fatigue or rust, whichever you prefer.
Candy store? Im out. Phil's strategy was to focus on Penny Shaq and the 3s. Grant was basically left open. Y'all even watch that series?
He retired cuz his bestfriend died. I think that was da biggest choice of his retirement
Imagine Jordan and Shawn Kemp on the same team, wouldve loved to see that
No as a lifelong Bulls fan and MJ fan that woulda been a disaster

Great stuff Andy! ‘95 was around the time I started following the NBA, so this era has a special place in my heart 🏀 Didn’t MJ get fined for changing #45 to #23 mid-way through that Orlando series?
Yes. And I think he also got fined for wearing the white and black patent leather Jordan 11s because of the colors if I remember correctly.

Actually I believe Jordan trained at Bulls Berto Center for a week or two if not more before the comeback announcement was made. The training center was open 24/7 for all players on the team and Jordan was known to pop in to work out or shoot hoops while he was retired on occasions.
Well, a return after a while in a different sport doesn't guarantee you a victorious season, added to losing an important role player, like Grant.
A video about the one and *ONLY* goat, nice 🤘
Michael Jordan 1995 -1996 goat 🐐 legend NBA 6 Championship 🏆🏆🏆🏆
Imagine dominating a pro sport so significantly that you actually get bored with it and decide to try something else. That's what happened with Jordan. He won 3 championships in a row and wasn't chasing anybody as far as any particular NBA player because he already was considered by most to be the best basketball player who ever lived even at that point. I don't think he would have taken that time off though had his father not died. I believe that hit him much harder than anybody knew.
he was a degenerate gambler who got his father killed
They made the rules harder for me and easier for you - Wilt Chamberlain to Michael Jordan
Jordan may not have been the player he was at first before quitting the first time, but I always say that just to put on a pair of shorts, a jersey and sneakers and sit on an NBA bench, you have to have game!
Not a miracle..thats just the greatest
The media tries to blame Jordan's "rust" as to why the Magic beat Chicago. THE TRUTH IS SIMPLE: Orlando's big guys were MUCH BETTER than Chicago's big guys.
Jordan and Pippen actually had nice stats especially when you consider that Penny, Nick, Bowie, and Shaw were tall, athletic defenders.
Scoring:
Grant 108
Kukoc 69
Shaq 146
Longley, Wennington, and Perdue 92
The truth. Also Orlando had some timely 3 pt shooting to close out game 6.
They were used to beating up on Ewing and his band of bricklayers on the perimeter in the playoffs annually that b4 that series
Game 6: Orlando 12/24 from 3pt land.
Hey was actually decent at baseball. He was quickly getting better
Hapeeeee New Yearrrrr
Happy new year and Merry Christmas Andy, Jesus Christ bless you and your loved ones always 🙏😊❤️
“Gambling debt” what? Why tf would that matter to David Stern? He didn’t pay MJ’s bills. MJ would only be suspended if he was betting on games he played in. Kinda like Pete Rose 0:45
1995 comeback season is a season where I can say that Mj wasn’t the best player on the court but he still had a impact on the Bulls
I joked with my friends that MJ was coming back to the NBA last year to help Lebron win his last ring. Took about a month for them to realize that the reason there wasn’t any news about it was because he wasnt
I feel like if Jordan was in any kind of shape the guy could do a solid 8 minutes a night with 15 pts a game in this era 😅
@@knection1986 prolly Ik he would be better than danny green
He retire cause he father was killed, everyone knows that. He even did a press conference
Happy new year guys!
Shawn Bradley's line at the end of Space Jam was just pouring gasoline on the fire.
At one point Penny was Jordan's favorite player. Which is why he chose to wear his shoes the day his came up missing in the locker room.
Jordan really wasn't that bad at baseball considering he just jumped into minor league level.
I like your video but what is "Untold" about this?
When he returned did he sign a new contract or was it the one he was under already before he retired?
I/diot
Getting revenge against the Magic in the ECF the next year, setting a then-record for team wins, winning a 4th chip and dropping arguably the most popular sneaker to this day more than soothes wounds I’m sure 😂. Small blemish to the “fairy tale” legacy
Research Jordan's time in baseball. He wasn't terrible at all.
The reason why they fail in the 95 playoffs because they don't have that Power Forward who can crash the boards. Their starting PF was Kukoc.
I remember Shaq laughing at MJ throughout the 1995 ECF.
Jordan got the last laugh
That never happened
That Magic team was good in ‘95 but in ‘96 MJ showed that ‘95 didn’t matter because MJ swept them
Troll
I remember watching this as a kid
I think no one really knocks him for that season, cause, he came back for the last 17(?) games of the season, got tossed by THE FAVOURITES TO WIN IT ALL and then, preceded to win 3 more championships, while DOMINATING THE GAME.
Could they have won 8 straight, if he'd never retired? Maybe. Maybe not. In fairness that Rockets Team was real solid n it would've been hard to stop The Dream.
For me, honestly, The Goat, up to now... not just in Basketball, but, probably all sports. No athlete has ever been more competitive than him .
Jaylen Brown next video Andy Hoops 🙏🙏🙏
This doesn't hurt his legacy because he had been playing baseball for a year and a half.
You clearly havent seen space jam Jordan came back because after he played with the Looney Tunes, he found his love for the game again
You're overlooking almost two weeks of media speculation re MJ's impending return (1995) to the NBA.
Scoring 27 pts/game at 41% efficiency is bad for him. Gheezus… its a superstar numbers in todays game.
I think that's nick macmillan from the magic. Funny that it stung him at the free throw line against the Rockets in the finals that the Rockets won in 95. Jordan let NBA know though the next three years getting 3 more rings. He was the same. We'll never have a great player like him ever again.
Ridiculous that people act like it doesn't count. If he won he would have been lauded. Win win situation for him
Here we go with MJ detractors showing up to a video to make things up. So they have a reason to justify their pathetic hatred.
