  • Pitching to the Dragons is founder of custom fit earphones manufacturer 'Snugs', Paul Jobin. Snugs perform a 3D scan of the ear and inner ear and then produces individual headphones with a 3D printer but with a price tag of £10,000 for the ear scanning equipment, will the comfort be enough for investment?
    An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

If you buy a Honda, you pick a trim level and maybe an option package or two, if you buy a Bentley you pick everything down to the color of the stitching. You don't need that scanner for £10,000. I'm a musician and had my in-ear monitors and noise protection made from a regular acousticic technician (audiologist). I don't know the English term for it, but it's the same guy, who makes those in-ear hearing aids. You can have that done in every shop here, that sells hearing aids. Your ear gets filled with foam, that hardens. It's a physical imprint f your ear. The model is then being sent to the earphone company, that offers custom in ears (most professional brands, like Sure, Sennheiser, Sony, etc offer this).
    No need for a 10, 000 scanner at all. Use the infrastructure that's there already and cut the cost of this!

    Current method of getting an ear impression made involves sticking silicone mould in your ear and it isn't the most comfortable experience. No way would it ever have mainstream appeal... But this guys method might.
    Other hurdle is being able to generate awareness as general public haven't expereinced or come across such a thing to appreciate it enough to buy. A Mainstream brand could help with this... Driving down cost in the process.

    The problem here is those scanners are far too expensive, and his prices are *FAR* too low to appeal to the kind of audience that wants custom in-ear monitors (CIEM). There are also a bunch of very large companies already in the space who make far better products that cater directly to the kind of people willing to go to an audiologist and get impressions done for these. I have a pair of CustomArt in-ear monitors that are fantastic and cost in the neighborhood of $800 and they were worth every penny, but trying to convince a mass market looking at a $100-200 headphone to go that extra length for a product that doesn't have the same level of quality as the high end units just isn't feasible.

    • @tooshlong
      @tooshlong 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem actually is Bluetooth earphones

    • @Elazul_END
      @Elazul_END 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tooshlong You missed my point completely. The headphones he was trying to pitch would absolutely destroy any pair of bluetooth headphones in audio quality at a comparable price.
      By that measure he's got a compelling argument, because there would be people willing to have a pair of wired headphones to get better sound quality, and there are plenty of people who find wearing even the most comfortable earbuds unbearably uncomfortable but would have no such problem with these.
      The problem is that the vast majority of people don't want to go through the hassle of scheduling an appointment at an audiologist, get impressions made that costs $60-100, send them in to have headphones made and wait for them for weeks to get a $100-200 pair of headphones.
      They want to go to BestBuy or Amazon and have them the same day or in a couple days at most. The crowd who is willing to go through those extra hoops are people like me, who wouldn't want a cheap version when they can get audiophile quality CIEMs instead.
      TLDR: this is too niche of a product. The people who don't care about audio quality and can wear normal headphones comfortably are going to go with airpods or rayconn bluetooth headphones. The people who do care about audio quality are going to buy CIEM's or high end universal monitors. So the only potential market for this product is someone who can't comfortably wear normal earbuds or monitors, but can't afford or doesn't care enough to pay for CIEMS.

I guess there is a niche market out there for people who can't get earphones or buds to fit, but what a palaver. Best earbuds I have ever purchased are a £20 wireless Bluetooth set, totally waterproof (I sometimes wear them in the shower) from Amazon. Never fall out, you can wear them for any activity, robust construction. They come with a clever little case that charges them when not in use, you don't need to plug it in, it can charge in your pocket. 18 months later still going strong. The franchise concept would work with this one. Audiologist offices, tech enterprises offering accessories, and other similar businesses would purchase the 3d scanning tool as part of their cost and the printing of the headphones would be done in various locations as he builds the business. The biggest problem was the availability of the scan and the time necessary for independent offices to do a mold and sending the mold in for production. If I wanted the best headphones (which I don't) I would be willing to wait a week for processing, production, and shipping. Two weeks at the most. As a consumer, I can see the excitement of owning the best pair of headphones even if I had to wait a week or two. As a businessman, a $10,000 investment, plus the franchising fees, would be acceptable if I knew the traffic of demand would be positive. If you're in the mall, with 500+ daily walking past my shop, I would consider it. If I was a hearing test center, with clientele in a small town, no. But if franchisees were taking the biggest risk with the investment, they are the ones needing to bring the traffic in and absorbing the highest cost of the business.

    He said the earphones sell for 139 - 199£ a pair so average 169£ a pair, and that the scanner costs 10.000 USD which is roughly 8000£. Where did Sarah come up with the math to say he needs to sell 300 - 400 to get near the price of the scanner? 8000 / 169 = 47 units in my book.

    As he said, "Rockstars" have been using moulded in-ear monitors for years so the concept is not new. So he wants to bring this to everyday consumers but umo £199 for headphones is quite expensive. I think the everyday consumer will still buy a cheaper pair that fit well enough for about £20.

  • @J.Chapman-Drums
    @J.Chapman-Drums 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In ear monitors, or IEM’s as they are known have been around for quite some time. They are used by thousands of musicians and performers. They can retail at anywhere into the thousands. As a musician myself, let me tell you...people will buy this product and would be happy to pay for it, if it delivers and the quality is right. I even come across people who don’t play instruments and still buy earphones like this.
    He is quite right arguing against the comment made about people not being bothered to go and get moulds done.
    There are enough people in this world who care about the listening quality of music. Seriously.
    The amount of times I used to sit on a bus and my headphones were rubbish. You couldn’t hear the music clearly. Even with the cheap foam inserts that earphones can come with.
    All I will say, is once you’ve tried IEM’s you won’t want to go back. A good set will make major improvements to the quality of what you are listening to. It’s noticeable.
    I hope he does well.

    £199 for a pair but who is going to pay for that?? A tiny percentage of people will. The price is everything these days especially with the lockdown and people have no secure jobs any longer. It is NOT an essential product to gave therefore people won’t pay the price

    For that price the least you could have done was look in to home appointments for scanning the ear (maybe £15-20 extra cost) with delivery. I can buy professional studio headphones for that price, over ear so no need to endanger my ear drums in comparison to sticking that right in to my ears.

    He should have invested in contacting a programmer or app maker to make a mobile app that can scan your ear and thus give ear measurements. So when someone is interested in the earphones, you get prompted to visit /install the app.. The ear measurements can then be shared with the company and headphones can be made based off those measurements. So no need for that expensive scanner.

    I've had custom in-ear monitors made and the process definitely wasn't impulse-quick. I had to go to an audiologist and have moulds made. BUT once the company had my moulds on file I can order an upgrade from them anytime I want in the future and they'll already have the file to make them. Might have done some good to include that in his model.

    From someone that struggles with earphones especially now wireless ones. Having some that would mould to my ear would be great. I had to have an OP on my ears leaving giant gaping holes and earbuds falling out a lot. So £200 for these compared to 150-190 AirPods and others don’t bother me too much.
    Hopefully something like this is adapted but it’d have to be Apple or Amazon to go world wide.

  • @k1llyah

    I see spawn off products like industrial earphones (noise cancelling) that are comfortable, potential partnership with 3M etc.
    It is going to take more money and proper financial guidance on cost management and sales projections.
    Jenkins + Jones combination for 150k, 40% equity back to 30% on payback is what I would pursue.

    If he really wanted to try to make this business work, when you order online/outside of London like he was saying, the company should send them a diy ear mould that the buyer sends back and later receive headphones however long after once they make them.
