ikr. Everyone's lunch speaks to their home lives. Brian's perfectly neat sandwiches, crusts cut off and all. Andrew's entire kitchen cupboard, piling it on, the pressure to bulk up for wrestling. Claire's sushi reflects her rich girl lifestyle. Allison chucking her sandwich meat and making up her own concoction, shows that her parents ignore her, they didn't know what she wanted on a sandwich. And as stated, Bender has no lunch, cos' his parents don't care, they see him as a burden.
I made the same observation, so this movie is much deeper than most people think...(I guess that your clothes and lunch tell quite a lot about yourself without having you saying a word at all) And just for the record, I was brought up in a middle-class hard working family. So I guess that I would have been a mix of Brian and Andrew's character, since I was sports freak at the time.
It could also be an in site on how they view themselves, I doubt their parents played a role in their food. Bender is chaos and doesn't care so he doesn't bring a lunch. Claire is uptight and cares about what people think of her hence eating something cultural. Andy is a stereotypical wrestler so he needs to eat to maintain his figure. Brian is an uptight nerd so he is about organization. Allison is neutral and thus eats what she only cares for.
The subtlety of Bender making fun of everyone else's lunch to hide the fact that he didn't have one was genuinely some of the most fantastic character writing I've seen. Each of their lunches is a representation of the character themselves and I love this film
Favorite moments: 1. Bender slapping Brian's hand away. 2. Allison going all adorable mad scientist on her sandwich. 3. The fact Andrew brought half of the pantry with him for lunch. This movie is timeless.
My film teacher pointed out the connection between their lunches and their personalities /character. Also the connection between each car that drops off each character at the beginning.
Something tells me that the reason Allison eats such a strange lunch is because her parents are so neglectful that as a kid she always had to make her own food with whatever she could find and her diet never changed.
Alison's parents were the extreme opposite of Brian's parents. Extreme neglect vs extreme protection and control. Brian's parents are the kinda of folks who make their child grow up to be afraid of everything whereas Alison's folks are the ones that make their child grow up to feel low self esteem and worthless. Xiomara Videz It's because Bender and Alison have sympathy for each other. The younger generations today may not know this but the so-called "dark scene" or "gothic & punk scene" (mostly represented in Germany today) were still considered outsiders in the 1980s. Punk, Metal, Gothic, even satanic folks, came out of the underground and had their mainstream success in the 1990s and early 2000s, also thanks to successful bands like Nirvana (Punk), Metallica (Metal), you name it, and cyberpunk movie series such as The Matrix. These days in the 2010s and upcoming 2020s some of the darker and alternative lifestyle people have split up again and went back to the underground, dwelving in reptile worship and exploration of horror movies. it's still fucking unusual where I come from. In working class rural Ireland, no one brought fucking sushi to my school & that was the late 1990s, early 2000s. And I think that would hold true not only for all of Ireland, but England too.
I find it ironic how when I was in high school I pretty much had the same personality as Allison. Like whenever I packed my lunch I always brought weird things like cereal, pixie sticks, soda, a sandwich. Then when it was lunch time I pulled the meat off the sandwich and I actually put cereal and pixie sticks on the bread. Then I ate it in front of the people that I sat a lunch with. They actually first looked at me like I was crazy I just ignored them though. True story.
I love how Bender throws a Coke to Allison without saying a word. Its some unspoken understanding. This is one of my all time favorite movies. I have it on DVD. I was a kid in the 80's and this is very accurate. Thanks.
What’s even better is she doesn’t even look at the Coke can when she catches it. It’s like automatic “Yep!…Thanks!…”. The pure mechanics of the gesture is marvelous!…
I've been asking my mom can she liked buy me some sushi for school but she keep refusing maybe the fact that Sushi is raw and I can't have it in my lunchbox for long unless I put it in a refrigerator so it won't rot.
@@nataleeisjustchilling2737 Lucky; I don't even know if my parents would've let me watch this at that age. But then again; they did let me go into a screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show when I was around that age. So, yeah, nvm.
They pretend like they never even met that's how highschool is then they soon graduate and realize how pointless it was to ignore someone just because they are not popular
Yep. EVERYBODY Loved this movie and the message. Yet the same cliques went on long past that, with the same disdain represented for the other cliques, and the same bullying. I've heard it's better for the most part now, but if so it's still a recent development. I was the outcast in high school. It wasn't until I got out of high school that I ended up hanging out with the stoners, the jocks, and the preps and pretty much fit in with everyone after that. We'd all like to think that things changed everything that day, but in the real world....... It would actually be pretty much like they said it would earlier. Andrew and Allison would probably try to make a go of it. But how long is he going to be able to put up with his friends griefing him about dating the freak show. She's never going to be the preppy girl just because she was dressed up in preppy clothes. The best you could hope for is a casual nod passing in the halls, and no longer picking on or putting others down.
It’s open ended but most likely got together whenever they weren’t with their friends or probably left their group friends seeing as they’re all happier together than they were with the crowd they were around
I like to think that they stayed friends. Or maybe reached out to each other years after this when the peer pressure of higher school was no longer a big deal. It could happen.
the breakfast club is one of those movies where I get genuinely pissed when it ends because it's so good! I dare a director nowadays to try and make a movie like this. 90% of it took place in one setting, no crazy special effects, no explosions, no gore, just pure acting talent. One of my all time favorites!
80% of movies today are without crazy special effects, explosions, gore but has pure acting talent. Most people just don´t give a shit about those kind of movies and comic book movies rule the box office
So Andy’s Dad gave him a whole buffet so he can gain more pounds for wrestling Claire’s parents gave her very prestigious meal (at least by comparison) Brian’s parents gave him everything he needs, all 5 food groups Allison’s parents don’t really care how much sugar she’s eating And Bender doesn’t even have a lunch
+ambershard 2001 - I actually didn't think that fit into how her character would react. I'd have preferred it if she had missed and then do a signature Allison glare or weird noise at Bender for almost hitting her.
This is part of the list of Greatest Movies Ever Made. A movie where you're entertained even though there's no explosions, no gore, no CGI of any kind. Just actors and actresses being simple teens in detention. Here we are now in 2020 and this movie still has a major hold on us. I dare any director to try and make a movie that can hold our attention as this one can now
Max Power fun fact, that actress was actually a really healthy person. She got sick from eating that sandwich and got jittery for a while. She got better the next day though lol.
Andrews Lunch is literally someone's shopping list: 3 Sandwiches, a quart of milk, a bag of chocolate chip cookies, a family-size bag of potato chips, an apple, and a banana.
@qwertasdcfghjklmo24z wrestling isn't football, you have to actually watch what you eat. The sandwiches and fruit I get, but no wrestler, especially one with a dad like Andrew, is gonna have a party sized bag of chips, and bag of cookies, a coke, and a half gallon on milk
@@patrickkanas3874 you are correct. Wrestlers generally want to cut weight rather than gain it, because they want to qualify for the weight class that is their optimal weight for their height, rather than being to high and having to go against someone who is at their more ideal weight for their height. Its similar for boxers too.
1:21 You can tell that lettuce wasn't intended to fall, because of the way Bender smirks afterwards lmao (Edit; this is the most likes I've ever recieved thank u all :), also Bender smirking when the lettuce falls means he broke character and they kept it in the film)
I don't know why, but I keep laughing at Andrew's sandwich constantly dropping its lettuce in about every shot it's in! The timing of it dropping as he looks at Bender "What's your problem?" is just perfect somehow! Even Bender laughed a bit when it fell out.
In this scene, we learn lots about their home lives. Claire is eating sushi (a food that was rare and expensive at the time, showing her parents wealth), Andrew is eating lots to gain strength and muscle (showing how his dad pressures him athletically), Allison is making her own concoction (showing how her parents ignore her), Brian is eating a nutritious lunch, all groups are represented (showing that he is educated and healthy) and Bender doesn’t have a lunch. This shows that his parents don’t care and see him as a burden
POPCORN that’s at least 2500 calories right there. You don’t need that many calories in one meal unless you’re a 300lb bodybuilder or eat once a day. If you eat 3 of those meals a day, you’ll get fat especially for someone as small as andy

+Joshua Harner I had Saturday detention during high school once; it was nothing like this because, one, we were in the cafeteria, two, there were a lot of students serving Saturday detention, and three, there was no Bender, so detention was really bland.
I went to New Trier the High school that started this. Its manly siting in a class room working on homework or just drawing or reading books from 8:00am to like 12:00.
I like to think that when Monday finally came along, Allison, Andrew, Bender, Claire and Brian all developed there own clique and stuck with each other through high school.
I don't have a friend like that. Because I am Andrew. Seriously, I bring a one man picnic into work for lunch & buy a whole 16 inch pizza for my self if we're getting pizza.
I am Andrew, I bring an unopened pack of Oreos, peanut butter ( for some reason ), a jug of water, rice, my viand, junk food, sometimes Nutella if I'm lucky ,extra money for more food, practically anything else delicious and edible, and extra money for more food. I give some to my classmates sometimes though...
Great movie ( came out while I was in high school ). Just wondering why Mr. Vernon didn't sit in the library the entire time with the students instead of sitting in a office that was separate from the library? I guess this would allow the students to talk more and to carry out their antics.
Sounds like something Ryan George needs to address when he inevitably does the Pitch Meeting for this movie. Producer Guy: Why doesn't the Principal stay in the same room with the kids to make sure they all behave? Writer Guy: So the movie can happen. Producer Guy: Well okay then.
Andrew's is the best.*pulls out bag of potato chips, 3 sandwiches, a bag of chocolate chip cookies, carton of milk, banana, and an apple*. *Ready to eat the sandwich*. Lettuce falls out onto the table. Claire and John staring at him. "What's your problem!?" Classic lol.
Let's see, we have; - An elegant bento - An entire section of a grocery store - A diabetes sandwich (that will tear up the roof of your mouth) .......... And Brian has the most normal lunch out of all of them XD

A bag of chips, a ham sandwich, another hame sandwich, a numba 6 extra dip, a bag of cookies hold the pickles, a banana, a small apple, two numba 45s and a large milk
Aria Spruell chips - 1200 calories. Sandwiches - 1200 calories Milk - 900 calories Cookies - 1200 calories Everything else - 300 calories Almost 5000 in one meal, nobody eats that much in one meal, not even 400lb strongmen
SA DEE no, even 400lb strongmen on steroids don’t eat that much in one meal, and they have more muscle to feed than sumo wrestlers (because of steroids obviously). The only individuals I’ve seen eat 5000 calories in one meal are competitive eaters
Nice touch that Allison's Coke fizzed up when she opened it, since Bender threw it to her. And I like how Andrew's lettuce keeps falling out of his sandwich.
This is John Hughes at his classic best. The performances here are pretty spot on. This will always remain as one of the quintessential films of the 1980's.

Since Andrew practically bought the whole grocery store, he could have given Bender a sandwich since he had three, dont need that much, along with some chips and cookies, Jesus.
Bender didn’t get enough credit he was always seem pretty chill and cool with everyone especially with Alison. Everyone was always so mean to him especially Andrew and Claire. Larena Abdon what’s it been made of? Pixie sticks and Cap’n Crunch?
Wai Keong Lim I think so
I find it ironic how when I was in high school I pretty much had the same personality as Allison.

Thanks.

Andrews Lunch is literally someone's shopping list: 3 Sandwiches, a quart of milk, a bag of chocolate chip cookies, a family-size bag of potato chips, an apple, and a banana.
He is carb loading. He is a wrestler and needs a lot of carbs to put on weight/bulk up.
Can he finished the whole lunch?
I wish I could eat that all for lunch without gaining weight

Great now i can't unsee it. Thank you!
Wonder how many takes it took to have it fall just right at the perfect time!
Bender's expressions are priceless!
Lol, Yeah he's like, wtf !
But as a wrestler, he wouldn't eat that much food. He certainly wouldn't have the junk food items. If he was a football player that would make sense.
