    Thank you so much for this video! I've never been on this line and have always been very curious for several years as to where it went.(My grandmother lived in Rahway till the 80's, not too far from where the line splits for the shore).

      Really? That's when I used to take it. Commuted from Hazlet to Newark. Had the Bar car back then. 🚂😀

    Strange how NJT no longer offers a continuous ride from Hoboken all the way to Bay Head. The only five trains that take the waterfront connection daily are a 5:07 #2406 out of Raritan, a 6:49 #2606, 7:46 #2608 out of Long Branch, a 4:20 #2605 out of Hoboken, and a 5:20 #2609 out of Hoboken.

    • @samanthab1923
      @samanthab1923 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The line is only electrified to Long Branch

    • @Saxshoe
      @Saxshoe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samanthab1923 Thing is, Diesel trains are fully capable of entering Hoboken. The tunnel that leads to Hoboken yard is fully ventilated, and nowadays most if not all trains that terminate at Hoboken are diesel. This is independent to the electrification REQUIRED to pass through the North River tunnels.
      In the past they've used their dual-mode locos (ALP-45DPs) to offer the one-seat ride from Bay Head to NYPenn. Previous to that, North Jersey Coast customers took a diesel Bay Head-Long Branch shuttle and transferred at Long Branch to an electric loco bound for NYPenn.

      Matt S. It's been a long time since I commuted. Back then there were no trains from Hoboken. All North Jersey Coast trains were Penn Sta. only. Hoboken was all north jersey. My parents bought a house in Matawan in 63. They were told electrification was around the corner. Didn't happen till 83! Anyway the station looked like a haunted house & the parking lot was dirt. Use to change engines at South Amboy.

    • @Saxshoe
      @Saxshoe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samanthab1923 huh, that's interesting. I thought for sure that PRR electrified the jointly owned NY and Long Branch RR all the way to Long Branch while they were electrifying their mainline. I guess some diesel commuter trains terminated at Exchange Place. I'm surprised to hear that they switched engines! It must have been an inconvenient wait.

    • @Maunico0809
      @Maunico0809 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Saxshoe It was only eletricfied as far as South Amboy, NJT were the ones to extended electrification to Long Branch in 1987.

    Awesome Video!
    I like how the gate got caught on the trailer at 1:15:39! You don't see that everyday.
    I also like how some of the crossings still have the old crossing signals.

    This line has lots of very nice and modern stations, NJT must have spent lots of money??

    • @Wingnutcaseman
      @Wingnutcaseman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes they have. Since the 1990s, NJT has converted almost all the electrified stations to high level platforms and several of the diesel ones.

    • @Saxshoe
      @Saxshoe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the platforms on the NJ Central line west of Westfield are still low-level :(

    Do you know if all the trans just switch to diesel at Long Branch and keep going? I was really confused when looking at the website.

      Most of the time, it is a cross platform transfer to get on the Bay Head shuttle train.

    Hey dude, what engine was leading?

    • @joezegers
      @joezegers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably an ALP-45DP

    • @Saxshoe
      @Saxshoe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't be so sure. Since it's originating out of Hoboken, it's just as likely it could be any number of Diesel engines NJT used for revenue service in 2015.

    if all trains can go to Penn Station because of A) the Kearny Connection, and B) the Waterfront Connection then what the hells the point of Hoboken? just a waste of taxpayers money to pay to rent a station they don't need to operate because they can go out of Penn Station?

    • @Saxshoe
      @Saxshoe 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The waterfront connection only connects easrbound Pennsylvania Railroad to the eastbound Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad. Trains going west out of Hoboken cannot go east into Penn Station NY unless they stop and reverse in Penn Station Newark.

    • @Saxshoe
      @Saxshoe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are also forgetting about the connections at Hoboken for PATH, bus, light rail and ferry. Not everyone wishes to go into Penn Station

    • @F40PH-2CAT
      @F40PH-2CAT ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all trains can go to NYP (the ex Erie lines to be specific) and NYP cannot handle the volume of all that physically could.
