It's almost like the writer did not know how to make an ending so he just ended it. A lot of these short films are doing this now. I guess it's because they can't think of a good ending.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way, I actually entertained the possibility at one point that I was just too dense or too out of touch or too old to understand the new fiction. My uncertainty began over on the science-fiction channel, Dust, where nearly every tale ended abruptly and left me deflated and feeling cheated. There were a couple that were very interesting and compelling, the characters were fascinating and the story seemed to hold out some promise but then, like all the others, they would end right at the moment when it seemed as if some kind of revelation was about to appear. Now I feel somewhat redeemed although there still remains a sense of having wasted my time on so many dead-end stories and also the lingering suspicion that I haven't seen the last of this kind of lazy, bait-and-switch film-making. The question, though, is if the writers think they're creating some kind of modern art-piece and if they do, where did they get such a ridiculous idea: film-school, watching other films, maybe foreign films or counter-culture films? Wherever the notion came from I wish it would return there to make room for something that follows the old pattern of beginning-conflict-resolution-end, you know, the kind that seemed worth the the time you spent watching it instead of leaving you with the feeling you get when you open a present on Christmas morning and it's just another neck-tie you'll never wear. Is that shallow of me or ungrateful, I don't think so, I mean, why invite someone to go on an exciting journey with you when all you really plan on doing is dropping them off at the mall?

These will stump you every time. :) I mean, WE are still trying to figure out how the pyramids were built.
This was very good. I was wish it was a full length feature. It's always nice to see a professional actor, like Richard Burgi, in these shorts. The man just gets better looking with time.
This short movie is one of the best.... when it comes to the dog cant imagine how it die painfully... and it breaks my heart.... although i love the actors.. they played great and amazing... this short film deserves thumbs up....
This is a fantastic short imo! I like how despite Chris keeping his cool pretty much the whole time, and coming off very logical, his decisions make their situation a lot worse. Namely taking the device off the roof.

So a reaver is a plunderer, one who forages and takes by force. The story clearly says the father is dead, not missing, not absent under suspicious circumstances. That means his body was there in the garage. The father is planning a device that grounds electricity, keeping the house a place that electricity cannot flow through without being fed through the device, presumably robbing whatever is in the storm of its power. It also has a magnetic charge, whatever this thing is. It's also capable of manipulating physical objects, like the dog (poor dog that was hard to listen to btw), the door and the garage door. Also presumably people, as it killed the father. So... What is it? Is it something large enough to create weather patterns? Or does it only come when a storm is already brewing to hide itself? I've been puzzling over this, and I'm thinking it's aliens. It's gotta be aliens. The question is, what are they coming to plunder? The daughter. Something about the daughter. I need a follow up.

I agree, nothing beats a short done right. All the bullshit gets boiled away and you’re left with pure storytelling essence. And this one was great. It pulled you in, quickly let you understand not just who everyone was, but also then complex nature of their relationships. It flirted and teased and drew one in and then....nothing - it just stopped. Another 10 seconds could have given us sooo much more info. When a quality short ends abruptly it’s actually even more jarring than when a bad one does. If you’re driving 35 mph through city streets and a bad driver who has been weaving all over the place suddenly slams on the brakes and stops short in front of you, you’re exasperated and put out, but it’s not exactly surprising, but if you’re driving 75 mph on the highway and the seemingly perfect driver in front of you suddenly slams on the brakes for no reason, it’s exceptionally jarring. It’s like jumping from a height using a rope instead of a bungee cord - the ending is abrupt and jarring and one is left wondering what the heck just happened. Stories are not meant to go out into the world until they are finished - which means giving them an ending. Stopping a story is not the same as ending it. It’s really a shame, too, because this WAS a good, well executed story. Right up until it wasn’t.
OMG! WOW! That is one of the best shorts I've seen. Quality all around. Should be made into full-length movie and def use the same actors, they deserve to be on the big screen! Can't say how much I loved this. And the ending... Well then there can be a movie sequel too. Fabulous job to all involved! I'm def sharing this on.

I thought this was a brilliantly constructed film, brilliantly cast, directed, and shot... The only problem for me was the pay off at the end, we didn't get one... I know less is more sometimes, but this wasn't one of those times, it would have been great to have seen what they were looking at, at the end... I also think the aliens trying the door handles let the film down too... Other than that, this film was superb...

You see, you can create fear, tension, suspense, without showing a frikin thing. This was excellent. The film makers did such a great job with this. One of my favorites, truly professional. One of my favorites from screamfest. Kudos, just kudos. Acting on point, dialogue, character development, great cinematography, foreshadowing, great job! This is how it is done and hopefully more indepedent and newer film makers in this genre and even outside this genre follow suit. There is a new movie hitting theaters that is coming out that utilizes this well, only good horror movie that will be released soon by the look of things; it is about not making a sound. I forgot the name, I am sure everyone knows the title, I cannot remember, lol, I find it funny, my memory is one of the aspects I get paid for lol, face on me. Wow, I cannot for the life of me remember what that movie is called, but it utilizes these techniques and it is a big budget film. Well done. Incredible work.

To the ones who base this short (or their critique rather, by the ending, or lack there of, although i’m not a supporter of these type of movies or shorts, a lot of them have it as a way for you to imagine the ending…u didn’t get to see cc all the details of the dad, u just knew..same w/the ending..plus these r shorts and they have to pack a lot into the characters to set up the characters & all they are going through..i think all in all for a 16+ min. short, ya’ll did a great job!!!
Well, "reaver" means"plunderer" (aggressive, that is). Another good "abduction" film, with very good effects when needed. I know there's a lot of other TH-cam channels out there with this kind of shorts but I'm going to stick with Screamfest as the quality is pretty well always high. Only problem with some of the shorts are the open endings, which does make you want to see a full movie treatment.
Some comments here say this film is incomplete, but I was satisfied with it, I came away from this movie with the idea that father knows best, very well written filmed, and edited. Awesome job!

I am well used to be a small time film maker, now I write....screenplays, short-stories, novellas, etc...and I tried to start a horror film festival here in Myrtle Beach and well when I had the space and time and place to show ppls films guess how many showed up? Counting me 6.... I guess ppl here were not ready for fun and art...I did receive many movies and showed them all. Some quite well done, like this one. I guess I came along wrong time wrong decade...hey, take care and keep on pursing ur passion. YOLO! Right...then the next journey is one hell of a ride!

Right, they had a decent short going even though this is the intro to every alien invasion story ever, but they had to fuck it up with that scene because they needed some gore and doing it on one of the humans would have been too expensive.

Dogs are literally the one creature on this planet that does not respect boundaries, and that is aggressive to anything and anyone it they lay their eyes on, and then you morons try and train them out of their *natural* behaviors and *then* claim that they are your best friends. And then you idiots get confused after a well trained, well loved dog attacks someone (usually a small child/infant *family* member committed by the *family* dog), because you are not smart enough to acknowledge the fact that you cannot train or love instinct or genetics out of these fucking *predators!* And unlike wolves, coyotes and foxes, dogs have *proven* mutations, such as floppy ears, short legs, smashed in faces, etc etc...mutations that vary from breed to breed. Not every animal has this development but it is in the nature. This was a scary horror film. I am sure there are malevolent Alien species out there. The humans can be malevolent with or without alien provocation. The times we live in are truly filled with malevolence. I hope for the best. Try to prepare for the worst.
That's why I hated the film Dumbo. Seriously. Humiliated, orphaned and forced to excel to be accepted. Much worse than this film, yet they showed it to 5 year olds.

Screamfest Yes, I wish they hadn't killed the dog. That killed my empathy for the main characters. And up until that, it was such a good film! I wish, instead, they'd killed one of the people who the sister had said were always making fun of their father. Like -- show someone doing that in the flashback scene. Then that nasty person could get killed by the reaver. That would preserve the horror aspect of the movie, without making the main characters so unempathetic.
Open ended endings must be a new style or fad. I remember watching horror and sci-fi movies as a kid and felt ripped off if we didn't get to see the monster. Well, I grew up, and I still feel that way. So many new films do this. Some of them are great films, but they just ...end. No monster, no closure. You get nothing in exchange for your time. And that is getting old.

WOW! I have that exact same red led alarm clock. This could have been a really good short, could have been one of the best, but there is NO ENDING so it get two thumbs DOWN, way down for such a sucky ending. I can not recommend this short to anyone. If you do watch it you Will be disappointed you did.

Right, they had a decent short going even though this is the intro to every alien invasion story ever, but they had to fuck it up with that scene because they needed some gore and doing it on one of the humans would have been too expensive.
Thumbs up for me! Dogs are literally the one creature on this planet that does not respect boundaries, and that is aggressive to anything and anyone it they lay their eyes on, and then you morons try and train them out of their *natural* behaviors and *then* claim that they are your best friends.
And then you idiots get confused after a well trained, well loved dog attacks someone (usually a small child/infant *family* member committed by the *family* dog), because you are not smart enough to acknowledge the fact that you cannot train or love instinct or genetics out of these fucking *predators!*
And unlike wolves, coyotes and foxes, dogs have *proven* mutations, such as floppy ears, short legs, smashed in faces, etc etc...mutations that vary from breed to breed. But the one mutation that they all have in common is that they have underdeveloped frontal lobes! At least wild canines have normal brain structures! Domesticated dogs are not natural creatures. They are man-made mutants, created through the process of *selective breeding!* In other words, *they are not a product of natural evolution and were never meant to exist on this earth!!!*
*That* is why they are retarded-acting, unnatural-acting abominations, because anything that acts that way has got to have a mutated mind, and it has been scientifically proven that they do. They don't deserve all of these false narratives that you dog nuts like to project onto them just because they happen to be an extension of your own mental retardation.

That's why I hated the film Dumbo. Seriously. Humiliated, orphaned and forced to excel to be accepted. Much worse than this film, yet they showed it to 5 year olds.
They hold each other's hands at the end. Until then, they would drive each other crazy. So I guess the moral of the story is: siblings should appreciate each other while they have the chance?

Screamfest Yes, I wish they hadn't killed the dog. That killed my empathy for the main characters. And up until that, it was such a good film!
I wish, instead, they'd killed one of the people who the sister had said were always making fun of their father. Like -- show someone doing that in the flashback scene. Then that nasty person could get killed by the reaver.
That would preserve the horror aspect of the movie, without making the main characters so unempathetic.

Open ended endings must be a new style or fad. I remember watching horror and sci-fi movies as a kid and felt ripped off if we didn't get to see the monster. Well, I grew up, and I still feel that way. So many new films do this. Some of them are great films, but they just ...end. No monster, no closure. You get nothing in exchange for your time. And that is getting old.
I know my comment isn't going to be relevant due to my being 4yrs late, however, I was so invested that I forgot it was a short film. I screamed "where's part 2!!!"

WOW! I have that exact same red led alarm clock. This could have been a really good short, could have been one of the best, but there is NO ENDING so it get two thumbs DOWN, way down for such a sucky ending. I can not recommend this short to anyone. If you do watch it you Will be disappointed you did.
