Drawer Dishwasher vs Standard Dishwasher

  • What is the difference between a drawer dishwasher and a standard dishwasher? This is a common question we hear from our customers and the answer is quite simple. In this video we will mainly focus on the Fisher Paykel brand since they hold the patent on these products and makes both single and double drawer dishwashers. A single drawer dishwasher saves space and gives design options. You can run each drawer separately or simultaneously on a double drawer dishwasher. We will cover the 5 main reasons why you should consider converting to a drawer dishwasher:
    1. Save Space - maximize your use of space in the kitchen
    2. Versatility - multiple designs and installation options
    3. Save Energy - run a true half-load without the guilt
    4. Low dB levels - at or below 45 dB
    5. Service/Warranty benefits

I had F&P dishdrawers from 2003 until 2019 and loved them. Unfortunately, when I had to replace them last year i opted for an AEG machine with the easy-lift lower basket. Even though my gut instinct then told me to buy another dishdrawer. It was a mistake to go with the conventional AEG design. Initially I thought that i would gain more interior space with the AEG because of the unusable space between the two drawers, but that is not the case. My drawers had the same if not better loading capacity. At this point I am debating to replace the AEG and get another dishdrawer. The ergonomics of the dishdrawer are superior to conventional front-opening dishwashers. Whilst loading the dishdrawer there were never liquid spills and splashing. I hate the top cutlery tray in my current machine. It is a cumbersome design and I often find spotting on my cutlery now. Cutlery baskets are much more convenient and versatile. With the current dishwasher I find that I do a lot more washing up by hand. Having the two separate drawers was a lot more convenient and there were never dishes left in the sink at night. I highly recommend the drawer design over front loading dishwashers.

    My first comment on TH-cam.
Last year, my family stayed at my mom's friends river house, and it had two dishwashers. One double drawer, and a standard dishwasher, so I got to compare exactly how they both work. There are some good and bad things about the drawers.
    1. Keep in mind, the two drawers, are two separate dishwashers. Which means, if you run both of them at the same time, then twice the amount of water and energy will be used than a standard dishwasher. So the energy and water efficiency claim, is kind of irrelevant.
    2. As someone else mentioned in the comments, each drawer only has one spray arm. Most have two (or three). (I have a Míele dishwasher, so there are three spray arms). Most of the dishes get cleaned, but some don't; particularly plates, if they're not leaning down, towards the spray arm. So unless you either fully pre rinse the dishes, or run the dishwasher(s) on the heavy cycle, they're not going to get clean.
    3. The detergent dispenser is so small, that I don't think it can hold pods. So only liquid and powder detergent can be used in this dishwasher. I could be wrong, but it just looks so much smaller, than a regular dishwasher.
    4. Some dishes say "Top rack dishwasher safe." Don't let this fool you. Since there is no second rack, in one dishwasher, both dishwashers are bottom rack only. So if you have a lot of dishwashers that are only "top rack dishwasher safe," then this dishwasher is not for you.
    5. Since these dishwashers are not that tall, you can't adjust the the height of particularly tall items, such as pots or beer glasses. On most standard dishwashers, you can adjust the height of the top rack, so you can fit taller items. But with drawers, it's only a fixed size.
So, the only advantage to me, is that you can control how far out the drawer comes out (as John stated), and you can run half a load, in a "half dishwasher." I suppose another advantage would be, that if you're single, and you obviously don't have a lot of dishes, then you could run the dishwasher more frequently.
So, which dishwasher do I prefer? Definitely the standard one. It cleans a lot better, and it holds more dishes.
Designer Appliances can pin this comment, if it's helpful to them, or other people, if they choose to.
    So Buyer Beware!

Several of the claims you have made in comparing dishwasher drawers vs conventional dish washers are not quite true. The dishwasher drawers each use about half the water and energy as a conventional dishwasher so running both dishwasher drawers together would use about the same energy and water as a conventional dishwasher not double the energy and water. In many cases running both dishwasher drawers will use less energy and water as the conventional dishwasher because you can put all of your pots and pans in one drawer and run that on the pots and pans cycle and the other drawer you can put your dinner plates or things that are less heavily soiled and run it on the light or delicate cycle which uses a lot less water and energy so the net total of the two drawers would save you energy versus using the heavy duty or pots and pans cycle on a conventional dishwasher for the whole load of dishes.
As for the height issues, The new Fisher & Paykel Tall Series Double DishDrawer can hold seven place settings in each drawer and has added height on the interior of the top drawer to accommodate 13-inch plates and serving platters (without affecting the drawer’s exterior dimensions. This is due to innovations in design that allows for a bigger inside .
For the top rack only issue most things that are top rack only are due to the fact that the heating element is underneath the bottom rack and the things that say top rack only are usually things that would be damaged by the heat. These loads could go into either drawer which would function as the top rack. All you have to do is use the delicate or light cycle for this drawer and load.

I've had a Fisher and Paykel dishwasher as i live alone and thought that i could use just one draw and two drawers when with visitors. But decided to give it up.
Not enought room for cups when plates underneath. Need to use two lots of soaps, salt and rinse liquid when using the two drawers. Takes far too long to wash and makes grunting noises. And it cost almost double the price from ordinary dishwashers!
The space of opening a door is the same as opening a drawer.

How many dinner plates and beer size glasses can fit in a drawe?

    • @DesignerAppliances
      @DesignerAppliances  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Great question Elise Lee - the short answer is 26 dinner plates & up to 27 beer mugs while still having 1 silverware basket in place.
There are 13 rows on the right side behind the silverware basket in each drawer so you could easily fit 26 dinner plates in a single double drawer load while still leaving the entire left side of each DishDrawer tub for those beer mugs!
Beer mugs of course are not a standard size but can place 10 on the left side of each drawer plus depending on height of beer mug, you may also be able to place 5 more on the fold-down shelves of the Tall upper drawer making 25 total.
If you removed 1 Silverware basket & did all your silverware in 1 drawer, you could place a few addl beer mugs there! Of course, the best part of the DishDrawer is the loading flexibility, so you can always wash plates & beer mugs in 1 drawer while washing pots & pans or bowls & silverware in the other. Hope that helps!

Sometimes I like to handwash dishes, but dislike putting them on the counter to dry. So I'm interested in getting a drawer style washer to place them in after washing. I'm wondering if this has a "heated dry only" option. That way, I can close it to get the clean dishes to dry rather than have to leave it open to air dry.

Good question! No, there isn't a "top rack" drawer style per say but if you have a double drawer unit you can always personally designate that top drawer as "top rack" items and choose a lighter wash cycle. These DishDrawers are capable of washing everything from fine glass and crystal to heavily soiled pots and pans thanks to the various wash cycles they offer.

Good question Jennifer Dorough, the exterior does come in stainless steel finishes. But if you're talking about the inside tub, it's because after some research Fisher & Paykel found that dishwasher drawers are quieter with the plastic interior versus stainless steel. Since a dishwasher drawer is smaller than your average dishwasher, the chances of it being louder in decibel levels increase. The plastic tub keeps the decibel levels low, still giving you that quiet kitchen experience.

the worst dishwasher ever....I have one so this comes from experience - I have had mine for 5 months now and regretting it. All the pre set wash cycles do not clean the dishes except for the heavy setting. Sometimes we end up hand washing the dishes after the dishwasher. The draw design is flawed, each draw has ONLY ONE water spray on the bottom, traditional washer have TWO (some even have THREE!), hence the dishes get washed from both direction. I fell for the draw design - it sounds great, so don't make the same mistake! this appliance is not cheap! BWT, I have F&P ovens and they are great, but their diswasher's SUCK!
Finally I would question Designer Appliances ability to do impartial reviews . If you are considering buying this dishwasher.... google other owners reviews , don't take my word for it.

Sorry to hear your frustration with the cleaning performance of your dishwasher! For tips on getting the best wash performance, check out Fisher & Paykel's video here th-cam.com/video/ERcbuGakCao/w-d-xo.html. This video even mentions that, as you suggest, the heavy cycle is the correct cycle to use if you have stuck on foods. Normal or fast mode will likely not be as effective. In our video we did not cover cleaning performance and focused entirely on the benefits of why you might choose a dishwasher drawer (namely space and versatility considerations). If you check out Consumer Reports you'll notice they rate the cleaning performance of Fisher & Paykel as "very good" and our past customers have not complained about wash performance. I recommend you reach out to the manufacturer or dealer who sold you your dishwasher directly as they may be able to address any specific issues that might be causing the poor wash performance. A number of things can lead to poor wash performance such as hard water, low water pressure, or just general usage issues such as properly loading and selecting the correct wash cycles for your load. Hope that helps!

After you spent ton of money on this item when they have a problem you can't fix them...... why because the manufactory very smart they discontinued the item after a few years and YOU CAN"T GET THE PIECES SO YOU CAN"T FIXT IT. " You have to buy a new dishwasher " This is the market today.
