My biggest problem is probably the rotation I just can’t seem to get that last half rotation oof like everybody I know can do 1,5 from the beginning on (Like I can’t even do it off ice rip me)
Virginie Maurandy for the axel, you don't have to go full speed. Start by going slow, once you land it, you can go faster. When I do my axel, I'm on slow speed. Hope this helps you get rid of your fear!
Virginie Maurandy i learned my axel on the spot!!! i would stand on the blue line and do a set up from stand still then step right into it, i landed my first one like this!! however some people perform jumps better with a lot of speed (me rn), but if the speed scares you slow/on the spot is better
The quality of your videos and tutorials and everything is getting so amazing lately, like your progress in skating isn't the only thing taking off. :"D
thank you for making this! I really needed help with my Axel, I haven't been able to land one in my 7 years of skating, seems strange, but I just haven't been able to get it right, so thank you. :)
TheHiddenTiger 07 Off ice, when I practice, I do just fine, on ice is a different story, I think I was just getting the steps wrong, and I was lifting wrong, so I do have a few things that need change, and I'll practice it that way.
I love the way how you create movies... At start you show full trick and replay it few times that everyone can see it clearly and after is part with theory! Great job and great iceskating ;-)
I know I'm not Katie, but my advice is that if you're committed and work hard enough in all areas, you can achieve anything. My friend started at 12 (I know, not too old but still) and she worked so hard in on year that she went from a waltz jump to a double salchow. Believe in yourself, stay commited, take care of your body and you *could* achieve pro status. Hope this helped :)
JJSaltWater I'm 35, I've just come back to skating after a 15 year break, jumps up to axel are solid. I need to lose a little baby weight before I attempt an axel, but working hard on and off ice will get you there x
I was working on loop jump and axel when I stopped 20 years ago! Returning after children at 44 because that Facebook campaign I kept seeing in my newsfeed just saw made me obsessed with going back! I can barely do crossovers and 3 turns so I've just been going around in circles edging. Does it come back? I was surprised how uncomfortable the ice felt, but also amazing. :)
i don’t skate and i live in a tropical country but i LOVE your videos i can’t do anything on ice but i’m just like “this is dope i can totally do this one day”
thank you so much! this video really helped, i always went forward when doing an axel but i tried from the side for the first time and it worked nicely!
I'm not quite ready for axels yet but this looked like amazing advice. I took a break from skating and I'm enjoying getting caught up to where I used to be. Next week I think I'm going to vlog trying out your core workout video. There's no way I'm going to be able to keep up but it should be fun!
I’ve been facing forward when I’m practicing jumps. But I never knew you’re supposed to face the side. Well I don’t really need to worry about jumps yet because I’m only still on level 2. I’m not even close to learning jumps yet. I just like to do them in my house or on my trampoline to get myself ready to learn them.
i have been skating for about a year and mine and my coaches goal for me is to get my axel on ice by the end of the year. i have it off ice but i need to get my lutz and my backspin. next year i will start working on doubles and im so happy with how far i have gotten
thank you so so much!!! i've had such a hard time with my axels (i've been skating for seven years) and i feel like i'm not good enough at skating just because i struggle with my axel.
Fantastic tips for I was going to be doing the axel but with my mom's ms care just took my skating life down hill, not having the money to do it so this I appreciate when I get back skating hopefully soon & not to make it three years of not skating ugh :-(
You are so helpful 😍 i just landed my Axel off ice 😂🤦🏽♀️ yes, I am a worse skater 😂. But this video helped also for landing a good Walz jump 😍💫 in one month I will have a competition and I really needed help ❤️
Hi, Katie! This video is super helpful, but I still have two questions: 1) When I do my Axel, I tend to swing my leg around, instead of kicking it through to the front. Are there any exercises that I can do to help break that habit? 2) I also seem to be incapable of getting my feet crossed it the air when performing the jump. Do you have any tips that could possibly help with that, also? Thanks! :)
Hey Katie when I do my axel everything is fine except for my take of, my free leg whips around and when it comes through it's straight how can I fix this?
Thanks for the great tips. I believe they helped me land an axel today! I have not been working on this jump very long so was a bit surprised that I landed one so quickly. Your tips definitely helped. Today I really warmed up with that axel in mind. I did floor rotations and floor axels in my shoes. Really focused on achieving the axel takeoff position in my waltz and waltz loop combos. I also did some of your other exercises on and off the ice. Anyway, finally got up enough courage to go for the full axel and landed the axel on my SECOND ATTEMPT TODAY!! I'll be sure to send a video of my axel when I manage to record one. Thank you, Katie!! 😁
What m oves in the field test are you on I recently failed juv also any tips to pass them as I failed pre-juv 3 times and I don't want to repeat that with juv Also yesterday I landed my first clean double salchow
At 3:23 when youre building up momentum with your right leg.. do you touch the ground with your right foot? Because this one part is never working . I cant get balanced when I try it and I have to break up and go down on two feet again :/
After doing approximately a thousand axels off ice at home lol 😂 I finally landed some on ice. I had become so strong from always doing axels I am a 1/4 revolution away from a double axel off ice!
When I was younger I wanted to do Ice Skating so much but was never allowed. It's so sad that I just turned30 and still was unable to fulfill that dream... Godamnit Even if I start at 80 and it's the last thing I do I will land the Jumps. Everyone says If you start late you will never be able to land the Jumps.... but I believe determination is key and even if I'm unable to do triples or quads... at least I will be able to skate artistically. It's so frustrating. The only thing that gave me hope was when the Ice Princess movie came out. I though I was already too old.... and then that movie kind of gave me hope despite the innacuracies! Once I find a trainer willing to train anyone older than the recommended age... I'm never going back
I'm going ice skating later and I need your advice! I am moving up level and the rules in my country (UK) changed. Meaning in the level I am moving means I can do axels (NISA 2). When I attempt my axel the edge that I step forward on I take around too much that before I even jump I am facing the other way. When I do this I land backward but obviously it is basically cheating. I had practise this morning and started to take of straight. But, now my body doesn't stay straight in the air and I don't squeeze tight enough. I try landing in a back spin or do a loop on the end but I end up falling or open up to early like mid air. It would be amazing if you gave me advice and replied! :) If you are a higher level figure skater and can already land your axel it would be great if you could give me some advice too! 😄
video on double loop pleaseeee😭 I can do all my doubles up to Lutz but they aren't as good as they could be bc my double loop isn't great! Need all the help I can get💓💓
Elle Mitchell double loop has been my most challenging double. my biggest thing is DO NOT start the jump completly backwards and do mot try to just jump and snap, you must hook it and you are allowed to slightly turn before takeoff, use this to your advantage!!! my scariest falls are when i do not take advantage of slightly turning. do lots of walk throughs on the bored and focus on making a lowercase h with your legs when you left through and then squeeze into a tight backspin to grt the rotation. a huge thing that helped me was getting my legs and arms to go at the same time.... my arms/upper body would jump before my legs causing a very scary double, if you have this problem lots of walkthroughs along the boards will help!
i accidentally landed a double flip once, it was my first tim off the harness with them and i was just doing singles and i did one and i over rotated so much that i landed my double first try
I LOVE seeing people who can do triples doing single jumps because they literally are the highest and have the best position.
When you don't even skate anymore but you're still salty about not landing an axel
Chair lol
Chair why don't you skate any more
*Story of my life!!*
Chair 😂
Ikr 😂 I'm watching these videos so I can just go back to the rink, land one axel and leave. Then, and only then will I be satisfied
I just got my axel consistent 2 weeks ago!!
Abby Kiraly sorry this is late but yay well done!
Lucky you.
glad to hear it. I am 60 and just starting and I wonder how long it will take to do any kind of axel.
@Selin Altinel no it won’t I have been skating for one and I am very close to landing my axel
My biggest problem is probably the rotation I just can’t seem to get that last half rotation oof like everybody I know can do 1,5 from the beginning on (Like I can’t even do it off ice rip me)
Akikosato same! i can only get the single 😰
Axels scare me, the speed scares me when I have to swing my leg forward
Virginie Maurandy for the axel, you don't have to go full speed. Start by going slow, once you land it, you can go faster. When I do my axel, I'm on slow speed. Hope this helps you get rid of your fear!

I learned my axel from a standstill. It wasn't until i got it consistent there that i moved to a skating start
Virginie Maurandy
The 1,5 rotation scares me ;(
Hi Katie! Can you do a video on lay back spins?
The quality of your videos and tutorials and everything is getting so amazing lately, like your progress in skating isn't the only thing taking off. :"D
thank you for making this! I really needed help with my Axel, I haven't been able to land one in my 7 years of skating, seems strange, but I just haven't been able to get it right, so thank you. :)
weirdo Maddie /Roxy Lalonde/ could it be your technique? Can you land it on a harness or off ice
TheHiddenTiger 07
Off ice, when I practice, I do just fine, on ice is a different story, I think I was just getting the steps wrong, and I was lifting wrong, so I do have a few things that need change, and I'll practice it that way.
weirdo Maddie /Roxy Lalonde/ i've been skating for 8 years!!! i'm so glad i'm not alone.
Christine Rounds I have been skating for 8 1/2 years and I still don't have my axle and skaters who have been skating for 1-2years land before me ☹
Christine Rounds Same!!
I've never clicked so fast
Same
same
same so dont worry
I started working on my axel last week and I'm planning to land it this week ❤ I will heed your advice, thanks so much!!!
Katie makes the axel look so easy! And thanks for the tips cause I only need a quarter rotation to land it!
You should do more videos like this! This is the first one of many videos that actually helped me! 😊 Greetings from Germany 💕
Love watching your tips and tricks videos even tho I do ice dance I still like to watch them 😂💕
I already have my axel, but i'm just watching because it's katie
I love the way how you create movies... At start you show full trick and replay it few times that everyone can see it clearly and after is part with theory! Great job and great iceskating ;-)
That helped so much that's the next jump I'm learning 👍🏼
I still have to perfect my Lutz, Flip and Loop.. BUT I DON'T CARE!
This is the perfect video for me! Thank you so much Katie! I love you so much!
Hey Katie thanks for this video. Also your videos have been great lately the editing has come a long way.
Thank you so much! I really needed this
Katie, do you think it's possible for people to start late in figure skating and actually make it competitive?
I know I'm not Katie, but my advice is that if you're committed and work hard enough in all areas, you can achieve anything. My friend started at 12 (I know, not too old but still) and she worked so hard in on year that she went from a waltz jump to a double salchow. Thank you so much, I will continue to do my best and doing what I can!
I started at 13 and won first at my companions a few months later anything is possible if you work hard
Thank you so much!!! This was super helpful and had different tips than the other axel videos I watched.
