it's amazing how many videos there are on the internet with a click bait title like how to shoot "Cinematic" footage. Then they ramble on about lenses and cameras and gimbals etc etc etc. When really it's about the appropriate tools for that specific job at the time. I love this because although he uses pretty expensive lights in this tutorial, in truth all you need is a bed sheet and some cheap lights to get a decent rendition of this technique. Couple this with a great acting performance and the right choices in camera movement and set dressing and sound design, and you will get pretty close to "Cinematic".
I run across a lot of people who misunderstand cove lighting in that they will light each “segment” of the cove at the same brightness, so this is a perfect explanation. And the LitePanels Gemini is a BADASS light. I’ll be putting mine to use in a few videos soon.
Very good explanation one small tip, choose a lower F-Stop to let more of that light in and blur the background a bit, Deakins likes to keep the clarity on the faces but let the light truly overtake the face. He likes to adjust between f2.8 and 4 but it does vary.
I recently stumbled across your channel and absolutely love your videos. I'm getting into filming as a hobby and you not only have the "look" that I'm trying to achieve, but also break things down so well and clearly. Thank you for creating this content.
This was very interesting, you’re actually the first video I’ve found on this technique. Actually quite simple to achieve as well when you think about it. Will definitely be utilising this in future shorts!
NO GAFF ON WALLS. The big boys use ProTape 306P743160MSW Tape. It also goes by ShureTape Photo Black or Permacel Photo Tape. Take it off same day and you can basically guarantee you won't take paint off the wall. Good 'ol Blue Masking Tape works too in a pinch.
Let's take a moment to appreciate all the girlfriends/boyfriends who patiently go through our filmmaking experiments! What would we do without you? 😆Nice video Brady. Keep it up!
Great video Brady, great way to start the year. Love cove lighting. For ultimate Deakins lighting I wanted to see one of those bright practical sources off her camera right shoulder to get that Deakins 0101 shadow highlight pattern.
Yeah I would only suggest using fresnels or spot lights instead for sheer output. Deakins himself would use cheap open face tungstens when bouncing simply because they had more output which is always the main "issue" when using bounced sources, you lose a lot softening the light so you need more output. Fresnels or par lights for bouncing and soft panels or kinos (horizontal) are better for diffusing.
Hello I found your channel last night about 10:30 and I watched till 3:30 lol I love the content. Learned so much from you I’m a pro photographer I’m wanting to do video more and seeing you do what you do I’m truly inspired thank you
A good example of the cove light setup but one thing I would like to mention is moonlight is naturally a hard source of light (and not a soft diffused source as you mentioned here). It's a common misconception that moonlight is a soft source but it's not. Since moonlight is essentially sunlight reflected from the surface of the moon, the light travels farther than direct sunlight hitting the earth surface and is naturally a hard source of light. Nothing wrong with using a diffused source of ambient light in the background here though.
This Video was awesome, it would be awesome if you can go over camera exposure setting for when you are lighting your subject and making sure your final footage is not under or over exposed. How would you check for that in camera before realizing your lighting setup was shot too soft where the footage is overall too dark and grainy or shot too hot. I think that would be a good tip. Hopefully I didnt over look it on your channel
what's up Brad! First of all thanks a lot for share this knowledge so precious.. Please, let me ask you. I've been trying this method. But I didn't achieve the Rembrandt triangle. The point is stand the lights as tall as I can? And aim in the face in 45 degrees? Thanks a lot!! Best regards
Hey man, great video! I have a suggestion for a video. Could you do a video about different type of lighting to invest in when on a budget. If you did this it would, personally, be the icing on the cake. Such an awesome channel!!!
definitely down for show and tell and im 100% going to try the cove light method this sunday😍 its perfekt for what im going to shoot... its like you knew... haha
Great video! You always make the steps super easy to understand. I would really love to see a lesson on a compact / portable lighting setup for people that have to shoot on the go and can't carry too much gear.
it's beautiful! thanks! Brady, may I ask a question, how can we achieve Cove light effects with cheap photography light bulb? coz this kind of light source doesn't really have that brightness like LED panel
I've never been so excited to come back from winter break! ;) Absolutely no hate, you're a much better cinematographer than me, but to me this scene looked lit. Maybe it's simply because I know that it's lit, but the practical is so dim and so small compared to the fairly bright and extremely soft light filling Sara's face and the surrounding area. I could be sold that the light is from a chandelier or other bright overhead light coming from out of frame camera left, but not the in-frame practical. Maybe if the practical was a larger lamp like at 1:30 I would also buy that.
I felt the same way about the practical lamp too but didn't want to sound like I was dragging him. But sometimes people seem too obsessed with protecting their highlights. Like you can see work from plenty of famous cinematographers including Deakins with a small amount of clipped highlights.
@Brady Bessette Great video!! I have a question; what is the application, that you're using, to create a lighting diagram for the film set? Is it available on MacBook?
Do you have recommendations for more Budget oriented LED Panels that aren't cheap or cheap quality (and have enough output) but aren't like 1000 Dollars? Maybe 400-500 a piece?
Did she ever finish baking the cookies? I’ve seen vids on his famous cove light set ups. Sir Roger floods the scene with beautiful light. Nice vid, sir.
You've done a good job here, and I applaud you for your work. But I do have one nit to pick. That's your practical light (the one you adjusted your camera to) in the foreground. Simply put, the intensity of that light doesn't match the the output falling on the young woman's face at 8:18. Now go back and look at the shot of Judy Dench at 1:30 (the bottom image). The level of practical lamp at her right matches the level of the light falling on her face (and the edge of the couch). That's what "sells" the shot.
Hi Brady, thanks for a great walkthrough of cove lighting. Here's a newbie question: Would this scene be lit sufficiently, even when shooting with a Sony A7iii in Slog2? Or should the light panels be cranked up?
5:02 "...you can just tape it to your walls..." DON'T put gaff tape on your walls, even less so duct tape, unless you want to rip the paint off the walls. Legend has it that Sara is still stirring brown sugar till this day.

sorry I am late but better late than never!
You, Rob Ellis, and wandering DP are TH-cam goats when it comes to this stuff. Thank you

Ahahah yes!!!
A channel called Epic Light Media - which I am not subscribed to, sent me here.
Been subscribed here for a while though. Great videos, Bud! 🙂
hi Andre thanks for stopping by!
PSA: don't use gaff or duct tape on walls, it'll take off paint. Use paper tape.
hey you're 100% right, just had gaff on hand
I found this out the hard way the other day with gaff tape 😥

My constant search for excellent content and I keep coming back to your channel - thanks for making these.

I often use false color when exposing!
First time seeing this lighting technique explained so clearly, I will be using for sure in a Indy Film I am DPing :)

Brady, does this work diferently with one muslin sheet draped in three angles vs three separate sheets? What would the difference be? Please advise.
it may not have as effective of a light spread but the overall concept still holds true. Try moving them closer to subject!
