      Idk I think he would like for his sport to go to next level. But Bill likes having his hockey. Once it's popular, which it won't be, it's not his precious band no one heard of but he's sure is better than the Stones.
      Getting more fans is nearly impossible for hockey. Low scoring. Hard to follow the puck. Just not going to happen. Aesthetically just not cutting it. Focus on getting more from the fans you do have.

      I'm sorry but "I didn't really need to spend my life doing what I spent my life doing" isn't what Gretzky would have said. He would have said how he'd like the game to grow so it reaches more talent. Bill's bit was funny, but that's not what Gretzky wanted to say, evidenced by his entire life.

    Burr nailed it. The NHL should stay what it is. It's fine. It doesn't need to be the NBA or the NFL. That would weaken it, not strengthen it.

    • @tylerboutilier7263
      @tylerboutilier7263 7 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Agreed.
      "How can we take it to the next level"
      Translation: "How can we make ice hockey more appealing to the entire U.S. - including in states that have never seen a hockey rink - for the purpose of turning our multi-million dollars into multi-multi million dollars"
      Basketball can be played anywhere. That's why it exploded. You can't expect legions of kids who grew up in a dessert to be inspired to throw on a pair of skates. It certainly happens (ie: Auston Matthews), but it's rare for a reason. The NHL is fine as it is.

    • @thomaspaine656
      @thomaspaine656 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yep. You don't need NHL to make hockey more appealing. We got a minor league team here a few years ago and now the youth leagues are all booked up and there may be a demand for another rink in our metro. It's fantastic!

There's never this attempt to make metal mainstream. It's so much nicer as a small community of dedicated fans. Same with hockey. It does insanely well in cold weather cities with fans who have the patience to watch a sport that is more tactical and slow developing. Stop trying to get NBA fans to appreciate it. Michael Thomas agree 100%. Every second of every sporting event has to be filled up with piped in music and bullshit going on and video clips. I’m at a baseball game not a concert, can you turn the goddamn music off the PA system? Why should I need to yell for the person next to me to hear me? And I don’t need instructions to be excited. We have psychologists and MDs talking about the damage that constant stimulation from TV and phones and video games is doing to kids and instead of reducing it we add more in every situation. God forbid people can be at a live sporting event and concentrate on nothing but the game in front of them.

    I love hockey. I play, my kids both play, I coach. To grow the game they've got to get more sun-belt kids involved. The problem is that hockey is an incredibly expensive sport. You're looking at $1k/year per kid just to play house league. Compare that to the costs of soccer, baseball or basketball and you can see that hockey is out of reach for most lower-income families. And that's not even mentioning the lack of rinks in many US communities. I'd like to see the professional hockey putting a lot more money back into minor hockey. A move to small rinks for kids under 12 that are significantly cheaper to build and operate would also be a good start.

Certainly not representative of our populations. The guys who were fortunate enough to be able to afford it were always happy to be there., win or lose. The level of Hockey in a playoff game is insane. The guys skate 50% more, the plays are insane, hits are huge and happen _all_ the time. THIS is Hockey. I’m a couple months older than Wayne and was born only a few miles from Branford, in Galt. Sadly not a penny for me to play hockey growing up where my family eventually relocated to in northern Nova Scotia when I was three. I’ve played lots as an adult but I really appreciate everything that Wayne has done in his career. Of course I only became aware of him when he became an Oiler in 79 but I’ve been able to live a hockey dream, by extension, through his great efforts. I’ve been a fan all along and debated all the haters with ferocity. I’m still a fan. Saw him play only once. In 1988 I attended his very last home regular season game in Edmonton. It was against the Los Angeles kings. The oilers won but I was mesmerized by his play. It was my first pro game to watch and while the worst player out there was 10 times better than me, the shit he did made all of them look like they belonged sitting next to me. Thanks Wayne for the many fantastic years. The GOAT!

    From the perspective of someone outside the Americas and who only watches the Superbowl and no NBA, I think one problem is that it isn't part of the american culture (like it is in Canada, Russia, Sweden and Finland for example).
    I think another is that it requires by far the most skill to play than any other popular sport out there.
    A kid needs to kick a ball, now he's playing football. A kid needs to hold a ball and tackle someone, now he's playing american football or rugby. Hit a ball with a stick. Throw a ball through any horizontal crack.
    With Ice Hockey, first you need to find Ice, which for some places can only be achieved with costly courts. Then you have to learn to skate, which in it's self is harder than most other sports. That is without learning to shoot a puck with a stick, both of which are harder than pretty much anything with a ball.
    So, having kid's grow up loving Hockey as much is difficult in certain parts of the world. Personally I think that's where the passionate love for most sports come from.

    • @jasondashney
      @jasondashney 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good points. No other major sport requires you to "learn" the basic movements. They all just require shoes. Batting in baseball does involve an apparatus, but although the pitches are erratic and fast, it's always the same motion (you stand there, the ball comes to you when you are fully expecting it and you try to hit it). In hockey the stickwork is on a whole 'nother learning curve. It's also stupid expensive. Not too many poor kids make the NHL.

      @@jasondashney thank you for addressing a huge problem.
      I lived in a small town with a working class family... my parents still put me in hockey because I loved it, even though a lot of years I had to wear second hand equipment that didn't always fit so well (I was 6 feet tall and weighed 130 pounds at like... 11 years old), but you look at someone like Connor mcdavid, from Richmond Hill... that's rich people land. He's the best player in the NHL right now, and guaranteed he lived in expensive hockey programs and was shipped to the leagues where everyone was paying more attention... nobody from my small town would have the resources available to basically pay their way whorishly into the public eye. I have known a lot of incredible young hockey players who never even had a glimmer of hope because of their family and where they came from.

Later, when Gretzky was a Ranger, I saw him score his last playoff hat trick against the Florida Panthers. When he was on the other team, I though Gretzky was a bit of a slacker on the ice but when I got to see him for those two years, I changed my opinion of him. For players to watch Connor Mcdavid for Edmonton is really fast and skilled. For big hits I would watch Dustin Bufflieign (I think I spelled his name wrong but when the guy hits people they literally do a flip) He’s also a clean hitter and never hits guys in the head to cause cuncussions or take penalty’s. For fights I would watch Micheal Haley, Tom Wilson, Or Adam Mcquaid. Micheal Haley literally fights in 1/3 of the games he plays in. The season doesn’t start until October though

      Really? Because they NHL made way, way less money last playoffs than they normally would.

    • @TheGreenBasturd

      hockey is actually the "fairest" sport i have yet to see, a hard salary cap, a draft lottery with 3 rounds to determine pick order making sure nothing is rigged, and the whole cba.
      cant create fucking stupid "super teams" like the nba
      cant throw mountains of money at all the best players in the world like the yankees in baseball have done for ages
      and you get penalties for embellishment unlike soccer where its more about acting and trying to sell a foul than actually playing the game lol
      and like the other guy said, the playoffs had the lowest ratings in years because not a single canadian team made the playoffs..if the league was rigged to maximize profits then toronto and montreal would be battling for the cup every year and every team with the biggest fanbase would make the playoffs lol

    I too have been following hockey since the mid-late 80s and there is nothing wrong. It is actually more interesting now than it ever has been and has a wider audience. I watched the NHL finals with my wife and kids for the first time two years ago and my wife, who knew almost nothing, could not believe how exciting it was...hooked.

    Met Gretzky in a restaurant bar in Westlake Village, CA, where he lives. He is a very sharp dude. Didn't talk about his daughter and Dustin Johnson -- apparently a sort spot with Wayne
    Anyway, when he said, : "I can't image the Bruins and Flyers wearing pink" my thought was
    Neither can I brother, neither can I.

    100% agree with Burr. Hockey is great as it is. Do I wish more people enjoyed it? Absolutely. But not if it means changing the sport in silly ways to bring in a 'wider audience'.
