I used to have C64 back in the 80's with floppy drive and it was loading very, very fast comparing to tape!

Your video's are helping me through the process of getting to grips with the Pi and Retropie in particular. Thanks.
I haven't been an OS noob like this since the dark ages of MS DOS!

Been a long time fan, and after you helped me get the orange Pi prime up and running on the 4th of July, no less, I've been hooked! Finally jumped on the band wagon and downloaded RetroPi for the Raspberry Pi 3B+. Even though this video was 3 years old when I wrote this, it still came in handy. Thanks again for all that you do!

    Great video, as always.
For ol' C64 - you can go into menu >> speed settings and speed up emulation to load games faster. It's called Warp (it used to be keyboard RCtrl + W on WinVice). I am unable to check it (working), but should work from what I remember. Simple, select game, speed up emulator, wait for game to load - set emulator to normal speed.
While you have Turrican running, try to hold button instead of pressing it quick. :) Also try to press space bar while standing or while crouching. :) That was best game on C64, that was released at end of C64 life, while Amiga version has improved graphics and effects, while preserving playability. There were ports for SNES and GENESIS, including strange 'Soldier of Fortune' game, that is actually using Turrican engine.
Reason some C64 files are called roms, because they ARE roms, cartridges you would plug to C64 for fast load time. Other are tapes and disk images.
Still sad I don't have anymore C64, but RPi is great replacement. :)

don't use .tap flies use .d64 ".tap are tapes" ".d64 are disk" d64 will load much quicker

vice emulates the 64 so using .tap files emulates the datasette (tape drive) which was always slow. .prg or .d64 files are disk drive (1541 floppy drive) and will always load way faster than tape.

    • @simont557
      @simont557 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

or you can acceletate the speed of the drive in the emulator for faster load times

I remember loading the x-modem software from tape so I could use my VICMODEM to log onto the BBS to check my fidonet mail. It took so long to load, I would start it before dinner and it would be loaded by about the time I finished eating. Ah, the good old days ;)

Fantastic video... Not only does it make me wanna play another 1,000 hrs of Turrican (as if I were 13 again) but the explanations were very clear. I downloaded several C64 games from EP but they mainly only offer tap files (datasette tapes which also originally took forever to load). If anyone has a source for disk files, 'll be more than happy. Just remember that the switch from a datasette to 1541 floppy drive was like entering a whole new world (loading, while the game is running caused open mouth for me)

I believe most of the games on gamebase64 site are .d64 disk images. Hint, once at the site, click on GBC at the top to get to the search screen.

When running VICE with a PC on Windows 7 or 10, you can press "ALT + W" to toggle warp mode. It will run at around 3000% speed. Not sure if it will work with retropie. I'll have to test it when mine is up and running. I'll be posting a video of my homemade arcade multi system soon.....

If u want faster loading find the disk image d64. extention there a lot more faster but I really don't mind using tap too as reminds me of my youth back in the 80s I'd have enough time to go make a cup of tea and some toast and come back and usually all loaded depending on size happy days thanks for the clear instructions great video dood.

vice has the ability to load up a ram dump. which is the entire computer's memory. so you should be able to load up the game, get to the main menu, save a dump of the system, and then later on load that ram dump to have instant access to the game. I don't know if that method is compatible with the menu system in vice under retropie, but it works well for vice on other platforms.

Just in case somebody is interested: I had the same error. Just update vice via the retropie setup from the source. But beware: this will take a while. After this, everything worked fine for me. If this is not working for you, be sure, that you have updated your retropie before.

    • @aaronross1859
      @aaronross1859 6 ปีที่แล้ว

And, every time you update RetroPie, you will again have to update from source to revert to non buggy code (As of 2/13/2018 version anyways.)

Not all C64 games used joystick port 2. Go into the menu and select joystick port 1, and try again. Back in the day, I used to have two identical joysticks, one in each port, so it didn't much matter, but I still had to have a list of which games used which port!

F12 (or button 2), then Reset -> Soft (button 1). Works best with a keyboard--in that case you can get the F12 menu easy enough, but it can be done with just a joystick as mentioned.

Back in the 80's when I had a C64, you would start a game loading. Go get a drink, make a sandwich, eat it for lunch, watch something on TV, and when you got back to the computer the game MITE be done loading. lol
If you think that was bad, try downloading one of those games at 300bps. It was an all night thing to download 150k of data all while hoping that no one picked up the phone to make a call.

I installed VICE normally on raspberry pi. Have not fucked with the settings.
All the games i've tried have no sound and the speed is 900000%
When i go to the speed settings and use 10% speed, the game is still 900000% speed and no sound.
No matter what i try, the game will be sped up and no sound.
Do i have to reinstall or what's wrong?

I recently built a commodore pet mini but iam having trouble.
I installed GTK3VICE and did everything I had to but now I dont know what to do. I uploaded a rom to pi called c-pet.vsf its basically a commodore pet rom but when I launched my pi and then installed the rom onto it it launched commodore 64 basic v2 instead of commodore pet v4. How can I fix this? I used vice and do i need to use lr-vice? And when I turn my pi on I see commodore 64 then i click on it and there is the rom but it launches the commodore 64 basic 2v. Thanks if you help me!

Hi ETA Prime have u tried the newest version of VICE under Retropie 4.4. Seems to be riddled with bugs. Swap joysticks you can’t map a button too, you assign one button on a joypad as the map button and next thing u know it thinks every button is the map button. It even gets confused between controller in port one and controller in port two and the port one controller starts performing actions of the port two controller.

Could be that it’s actually playing an audio file since a tap is a tape file. And it has the loading lines which means it is listening to something.

I think the long time to load turrican its becouse you are using .tap file, if you use .d64 will be a lot faster. ( i think turrican dont have crt files but if you find a game with a long loading time, try to find .crt file of it, it will be faster becouse they are old cartridge files.... d64=disks .tap=tape crt= cartridge...... there are .prg files also, but i dont know if its possible to load them from retro pi) Hope this Helps

Rename Jiffy kernal and drive file to match the default Vice kernal and drive file. I backed up my original vice files just in case I need to revert back.
I renamed the KernalJ.bin to kernal and 1541ROMj.bin to d1541II
      kernal path: /opt/retropie/emulators/vice/lig/vice/C64
      d1541II path: /opt/retropie/emulators/vice/lig/vice/DRIVES
I tested a few disk games and they both loaded just fine and much faster.

Thanks man. Only real issue I'm having is the games I play (Alice and Wonderland, Defender of the Crown, eg) are 'two sided' and thus 2 files I have extracted. The games will load, but then just like the old days, "insert side B and press **" when ready.
Pushing anything, does nothing at that point. I did get Mountain King to work, but that's just a single file.
Anyone out there know how to 'flip to side b'?

I just cannot get a single C64 to run.... I get to the C64 starting screen with the input command, but there is no auto loading going on at all.
When i try to load them manually over Vice it doesn't work either.
I updated Vice over Source, but it didnt help.
Any help would be much apreciated!
    I would love some Turrican

mame (any arcade emulator actually), c64, and Atari 5800 emulators are all nearly impossible to use ='o(

Still doesn't work. Seems to be a common problem.

Making us wait the 8-10 minutos of tape loading is driving the term "emulator" too far.

Thanks for this video. I was always confused by C64's loading process. I just figured if it didn't load within a few seconds or so it was corrupted or something. However I often have troubles getting past some of the built in Trainer menu's. Such as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Coin Op...I can't get past the trainer menu. :(

Usually the space bar continued to the next screen, in my limited experience of trained games.

fast load solution ... turn on emulator speed to max and after game has loaded revert it to normal speed (100%) :D

The reason it takes so long to load is because they are zip files

So.. why does someone who has absolutely no clue what .tap or d64 files are make a tutorial video on emulation?
