    Hurray, river rockhounding! I look forward to seeing what you find. (13 minutes later) The gray stone with cross cross lines is mudstone. It might actually polish, depending on how fine the mud was. The lines are where it cracked while dry, then was cemented with another mineral. The petrified wood was cool, and Sarah’s agate pretty. I think the best part of river rockhounding is just getting outside and enjoying the place - the rocks are an awesome bonus.

    One thing to think about rivers are always at their lowest point when everything is frozen out. So you’re actually going at the best time even though it’s cold out. The river will be a little lower than other times.

      Very true, especially the Yakima river, it's surrounded by mountains for hundreds of miles, when the snow melts the water levels rise quite a bit. It just got up to the 50s last week and I bet this area is covered already.

    As I was watching the video I thought of the petrified wood I found near my friend's house south of Eugene, Oregon for a bit. It would be awesome to somehow show you some of his collection that he and his wife have found in the past sometime. There's a GIANT piece (possibly around 800-1,200 lb) on the downslope of one of the hillsides that they want to haul in, but it's almost a mile back to their house on mostly deer trail and steep grades, so getting it in would be a fight of the ages; so worth it if they were to somehow conquer said challenge though.
    He's considered renting a skid steer and crawl it to the area, but hasn't come close to committing to the idea yet. I mean, if he even made it to the site, he'd have to drag the stump about 30ft up the steep hillside and around a few trees just to get it to a flat enough surface so he can scoop it up. Yeah again, I just shake my head n say "good luck with that" lol.
    Keep up the awesome video content, I always look forward to seeing what you have up your sleeve in each post.

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love to see that!
      If he rents a skid steer for that you can always push it onto the hood of an old car and use that as a sled, thats how people move big rocks like that around without damaging them.

    Your sampling finds are indeed very indicative of the Yakima, Naches, and eastern section of the Tienton River. I've been on quite a few excursions that have produced similar results. Interested in the green colored find though; reminded me of the jades located in high volume up in the Teanaway River, NW of your location.

    Porphyritic rhyolite is what got me into this mess to begin with. Up here in the middle of Sweden, we're blessed to have an abundance of high grade rhyolite that takes an amazing polish. Where I collect is roughly around the area called Älvdalen (the river valley, in swedish) Älvdalen porphyry (for short, that's just how it goes around here) is world renowned, and if you google for like urns and butter boxes and such from that area, you'll find loads of great photos at the auction houses of some stellar pieces made in the late 1800's. Those people knew something that we don't know, absolutely remarkable craftmanship. Was actually strolling through the flat last night picking out a few pebbles I thought I'd send to your post box at some point. I know you have plenty of rocks already, so a pebble collection might be the way to go, since they come in so many colours and with different crystal inclusions. This is, as you probably know, a glacially impacted country, just as where you live, so I do'nt know the exact locations of most of my finds, but I'll try to slab up a piece that I've actually collected at the mine, to ease your stress of being able to label specimens 🙃
    I hope that would be ok with you, but I guess since you keep an open adress that it is!
    I can't thank you enough for the content you put out, you've diligently kept me company for a couple of rough years, and you truly made my time a lot more positive, and my knowledge has grown immensely by living vicariously through you. I shall become a patreon member as well, you'll be my first (and maybe only) creator I'd do that for, because you actually produce quality content. Just give me a couuple of days, yeah?!
    Much love from Sweden

    Sometimes you have to brave the cold and get out there and hunt! I do like those extendable grabbers, seems like a great way to pick up rocks in the wintertime. We are lucky to have areas in southern Utah that have some warmer days so that helps! I think we are also at the point where picking up some examples of each type is enough since we have so much petrified wood, agate, and Jasper already. Great video! Thanks for sharing with your fellow rockhounders. 😊

Look up "adjustable ice fishing ice scoop" I got one for 11 bucks and it's strong enough to use as a walking stick and beat rocks out of the ice. The money side of my brain tells me I should just buy them and bring them to a rock show, but my love of sharing cool tips has been edging that out. Yay! Thanks for braving the cold! Yeah things are tumbled not the greatest specimens for the most part, but you can find such a HUGE variety of stuff. I think this type of rockhounding is better in my area because you can find the interesting quartz stuff that has dissolved out of softer carbonates. In igneous territory everything is harder and the quartz gets beat up a lot quicker I think. I don't know what it is either but I really liked 6:02! I almost never find legit green rocks.
