Don't worry, EVs of China Origin will be produced in Spain and Hungary and delivery planned in 2025 possibly with forced labor on ROBOTS AND EU NEED TO LEGISLATE to PROTECT ROBOTS RIGHT now.
The average price of an ICE vehicle in the U.S. last year was $35,000 and an EV $53,000. If BYD can make a reasonable EV at $11,500 FOB China, a tariff of 100% shouldn't slow them down.

Worth noting that tariffs do not impact the Chinese manufacturers at all it is just another tax imposed by governments on their own hapless citizens - to the benefit of vested interests.
When China lowered the price of smartphones, it helped more people to own the phones. Without China's help, guess most people are without any phones or get only the cheapest, smallest that they can afford. I bought the smallest when it was very expensive. So now EVs when lowered the price, more people will be driving it. As US wants all to drive EVs and reduce pollution, so that's what China is doing.
Actually true. EVs are no go for many. China strategy is bad, they don't offer in Europe what sells BEST in China: PHEVs! BYD offers every car in both EV and PHEV version, Europeans dont even know that. Liauto is only PHEV. Leapmotor is EV or PHEV. I feel no compulsion to stop Them. A billion Chinese need work, and if they produce good EVs, I want access to them. If their government subsidizes exports, it's actually taxing them to give us discounts, and we should take as much of it as they'll hand out. When our government also taxes the imports, it only fattens its coffers at our expense. We won't run out of things to produce here because there are always more things to produce. Protectionism is stoopid.
A billion Chinese need work do they? Did you just simply pull that number out of your arse mate because the population of China is 1.4 billion. You’re saying that 73% of the Chinese population is unemployed. Absolute nonsense, the current unemployment rate in China is 5% according to the CCP.

It will take a time machine for the West to catch up now. The STEM gap is China's largest advantage. China made a concerted effort to educate engineers: the people who solve problems, gain technological advantage, streamline processes and engineer out cost. BYD alone has more R&D engineers than all US-based automakers combined (including Tesla). They are already using systems like comprehensive digital twins that maximize that engineering talent. Chinese automakers spend more of their gross margin on R&D and technology-related CAPEX. That is why earnings often look low compared to gross margin. BYD's automotive gross margin is roughly 10 points higher than Tesla, but BYD spends more on R&D (and gets quantifiably less in subsidies), which leads to BYD's lower earnings overall. If you wall off your market from China, they will get farther ahead. BYD has an 18 month product development cycle, a fraction of western automakers and less than some automakers delay product launches. If you throw money at western automakers, they will not catch up because they are not capital-constrained and do not have the engineering talent available (or the focus on engineering as a way to reduce cost) needed to catch up. There are far more engineering job openings in the US than people qualified to fill them. While labor might have the political clout, it is not the driving factor in car prices. To become competitive again is a long-term project. The west needs to educate and immigrate more engineers.
This exactly! American Conservatives have spent decades vilifying higher education and cutting its budget. Meanwhile, China invested in the education of its people. Congratulations, Republicans! You lost us the 21st century!
China is not good at new ideas. However, they can take an idea and make it much better. That's what their strategy has been: make joint-venture a condition to compete in Chinese market, learn from the foreign companies, and then make new companies to kick the foreign companies out. This video also discussed how China is inviting best designers from EU to work for Chinese companies. Why? Because, design requires a mind of original concept and idea. Chinese are not good at novel and new ideas. However, like they have done before time and time again, they could learn from the designers, and make the design even better. The Western firms know the Chinese strategy of JV, copy, and then kick out, but greed overtakes them and they still shoot themselves in the foot.
The Europeans, Americans, Japanese and Koreans can 'defend' their home turfs all they want by slapping discriminatory duties on Chinese cars, but they can't do the same with the growing markets of the Global South, especially ASEAN, Africa, Middle East and Latin America, not to mention Russia which they left. At this rate the Chinese will outcompete them in these markets very soon and with that, the potential profits will allow further R&D and ensure they stay competitive and ahead.

A couple of years ago I joined a live stream of an EV TH-camr that was once popular. He spent the whole stream talking about a recent trip to China and how wonderful the Chinese EV's were. I asked a question if people would be reluctant to buy these cars because they were Chinese. He came back with the rude answer that the T-shirts I buy are made in China so why even bring up the point. At first I was put off by this but maybe he was right. We are getting to the point where buying an EV will be like buying a T-shirt or baseball cap. We won't care where it came from until at some point we look under the covers and see "Made in China".
At £20,000 it might not as it won't be an easy sell to city folks in flats that have no charging facilities. Much better option for those would be a similarly priced Renault Clio or MG3 Hybrid.
@@billbarr7591 As EV sales rise flat owners will be forced to install car charging in the basement and others will specialize in on-the-street charging. The first ICE cars had nowhere to buy fuel.
This conversation regarding quality and price is all amazing, but unless the customer service improves, people will never feel confident to buy these cars repeatedly. My brother runs an Uber company in the south of Portugal and they leased 4 MGs in the beginning of last year. They had problems with every one of them: electrical issues with constant fault messages. One of them stayed at the dealer for 5 months. The dealers simply don’t know how to handle these cars and because China is in a very different time zone communication with the brand is reduced to a very small window. Resume: this year they ditched the MGs and leased a couple of Teslas. Not a single problem so far!
Why try and stop them? They are offering a service to provide low cost high quality safe cars! The UK used to Sail to china to buy tea , spices and silk.
Looks like the only place US OEMs will have a market is behind the tarrif wall the US govt has created. Will they take action and gear up to produce competitive EVs at low prices? 😂
It looks like GM and Ford are starting to try to produce EVs the market wants. But will it be enough? Perhaps not. While a company scales up a product they lose money. In the case of EVs they need to build up to several hundred thousands of sales per year. And with legacy those loss-producing EV sales are going to reduce the number of profit-earning ICEVs. I won't be surprised if we see the Big Two collapse under debt obligations as they try to morph into EV manufacturers.
Legacy auto manufacturers in the US will adapt and succeed. Why? Government subsidies and intervention just like China does and import tariffs. The Biden government is pumping billions into renewable infrastructure and subsidies to EV buyers. Easy access to ultra fast charging is key to mass adoption of EVs by consumers. That's why Musk started building out the Tesla charging infrastructure in conjunction with vehicle sales. A no-brainer, really, if you think about it. Once the infrastructure catches up and is accessible to everyone, like gas stations are, then there's no looking back. Battery tech is almost good enough right now and will continue to evolve and get better quickly. I think we're at a tipping point, ironically just like the ice auto industry was at the turn of the last century when they won out over competing technologies because of ease of use and reliability. EV's are reliable, they just need to improve on ease of use for mass adoption.
The US Cadaver In Chief recently instituted 100% Chinese tariff on EV's and solar components. Chinese EV's aren't even a thing yet in the US, but solar prices have already risen.
But interestingly, it appears that BYD may be aiming more for the lower-end EV market, having found a successful niche with the Seagull and Song Plus models. And they'll face way less competition in this niche, too. I expect the first US-legal BYD models to be in this size.
If this TH-cam video was a song, people would point out Sandy Munro was singing something very similar in 2020 - 4 -years ago. Back then I suspect many people doubted Sandy, I did not, I live close to where the largest car plant in the UK was. This is now a huge shopping centre, housing and a few industrial units. Ironically MG still have a small presence at Longbridge Birmingham. Change can come pretty fast. The UK motorcycle industry was just about wiped out by the Japanese in the 1970's, European car manufacturers need to move to a war footing if they are going to have any chance of being around by 2030. To me, that has been obvious for a few years.
As an Austian, who is looking to buy their first Ev I can tell you, that BYD is not really an option, because their prices are to high. Here BYD cars are offered at mercedes and BMW prices. MG prices are good though. MG Marvel looks good as well.
I’m a free-trade liberal from the U.S. China has not been a beacon of free trade policy, so I understand needing to use trade policy to even the field, but a 100% tariff? That weakens competition and is no doubt is plain protectionism. It makes us weaker, not stronger. If a 25 % tariff wasn’t enough it makes you wonder what is wrong with our domestic producers.
@@InventaChris Labor isn’t even 25% the cost of a car. Estimates are about 7% of the cost of a car is from labor in the U.S. But you’re right, the average hourly wage for an auto worker in China is about $5.
Europe will end up with heavy tariffs too. The only difference will be that in Europe tariffs will be delayed until the problem becomes real, so as to let European car makers have a few more good years in China.
EU makers are pretty much only making money with their export from china joint ventures , if they mess it up they will be stuck with only the EU production with no margins and not much export prospect. so either wont pass tarrif or they will commit suicide and tariffs blowback will kill EU carmaking.
@@MADDENCN for now Chinese cars are maybe 10-20% cheaper in EU then legacy EV cars. That is not enough to make them win the market. People will pay extra 10-20% to get brand they know.

On the other hand, they are already in Europe in a small amount, and those who wants their cars can buy them anytime. It is only a matter of time when the majority of the people will realise that chinese made cars are very good.
Why do consumers lose? More competition will mean better and less expensive EVs. Consumers win. The climate wins because ICEVs will be forced off the stage faster. The losers are legacy auto manufacturers who ignored the long and loud warnings that EVs are the future. And countries that will be exporting money for cars rather than exporting cars for money.

@@lopezb It's not a free market. The US, for example, doesn't allow Chinese autos to freely compete in the US. It's a competitive market. Companies are offering products and attempting to win sales via cost and quality. It's not a "fair" market. The Chinese government is apparently directly subsidizing the export EV sales. But China is not alone. The US government, for example, has subsidized the US auto industry with bailouts and loans. Dig in a little and you'll find many, many incidents of markets not being fair.

If EU OEMs try to compete they will have to ditch the EU auto unions.... just as the US OEMs will have to ditch the UAW. To make competitive EVs in the EU they would have to use robotic labor.... however that takes away the auto industry's major political advantage...i.e. jobs for humans. Take away the auto industry job creation you take away the reason govts care that they exist. Ipso Facto.. the Chinese will win this game. It will be longer than you would think but they will... and they know it.
Right now the largest car manufacturers are German and Japanese. In a few years the largest car manufacturers are likely to be Chinese. US car companies were, at one time, very major players but that is in the past. China has a developing labor problem. An aging population and better educated young people who don't want to work in factories. And young workers who grew up in better times. One reason Chinese manufacturing has been so successful, IMO, is that the first generation of Chinese factory workers had experienced very hard times. A job that gave people some sort of financial stability was highly valued. We saw the same in the US following WWII. Workers after the war had lived during the Great Depression and people were very glad to work very hard for a better life. But the work of those people created a lifestyle for their children which didn't teach the need to work really hard. China, I think, is starting to experience the same sort of cultural shift away from intense work ethics. Chinese factories are likely to follow Tesla's lead just like they have with EVs. They will install humanoid robots as quickly as they can obtain them. If so, that will extend the Chinese lead over Western vehicle manufacturers.
I'll buy what is cheap and affordable. It's good for the average people! Things are getting more expensive why the government stop us from cheaper EVs? Whether the Chinese EVs are lousy quality or not, the people makes their decisions, not the unreasonable government!

BYD sells only EVs in western markets, even when in China best selling BYD are all PHEV. That is strange move. Plus BYD in Europe are prices almost like BMW, double price of China. If I'm their sales director I'd grow their market 100% every year easily.
I honestly think China might be better served by selling/shipping EV platforms that could be used by other automakers. Just like they have been doing for years wqith ICE vehicles. Create a solid platform foundation that includes EV motors and batteries that could be used to create cars, SUVs and crossovers.
2:51 " (The) The Chinese government will pay these automakers cash directly into their bank accounts for every single car that they sell in Europe they're being incentivized to do this," The statement may be outdated. The Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a think tank that advises the German government, said that China’s aid to domestic new energy vehicles amounted to roughly $5.6 billion until 2022 when the direct payments to manufacturers were phased out. The biggest beneficiary of China’s support scheme was BYD, which received $3.7B in direct aid from 2018 to 2022. In 2022 Tesla received about $426 million in direct subsidies from the Chinese government for cars manufactured at its Shanghai facility
@@kenbehrens5778 You are correct about the total subsidies. The statement at 2:51 referred to direct cash subsidies. The extensive supply chain around each group of factories, sponsored by competing local governments, tax incentives, and cheap land, contributed to their success. Tesla also receives a great deal of incentives in Germany. Under the Automotive Industry Financing Program in the US, the Bush and Obama administrations allocated $80 billion in direct assistance to automotive firms to rescue them. They were too big to fail. The US needs a more substantial, funded industrial policy for NEVs.
I'll be worried when China makes something other than a 5m long E-class executive sedan. Or when they start taking their cars to the track to set records. Until then, the Volkswagen group is probably gonna be just fine. Maybe the low-end market segment will be overtaken.
Whoever makes the big initial sales, (the S-curve turnover of ICE to EV) that’s going to kill anyone that isn’t competitive. Once an EV is affordable, & purchased by someone that doesn’t buy new cars regularly, that potential car customer is closed off for further sales for 10+ years, because EVs last forever, and need little maintenance.
The Zeekr is going to give Tesla a real run for it's money, with premium performance for a cheap price. Bring it on. Many people need to see ICE parity to make a switch, as up to now it's for those who can afford one rather than the average Joe.
Sad excuse for being incompetent... The Chinese are just better at producing than any other country in the world... US and Europe have to come up with these stories to try to hide the fact that China has surpassed them
If these Chinese cars prices are being set to the maximum, ie at equivalent to similar European brands or Tesla, then they can presumably drop the price to absorb the effect of tariffs that might be imposed on them in Europe, to a certain extent. And presumably if China retaliated with similar tariffs on European brands there would be less ability to cut prices while covering costs.

Study shows BYD Seal and Dolphin are two of the world’s safest cars Reading Time: 3 minutes Mark Andrews March 13, 2024
In the study by the car insurance experts 32 models available in most of six markets were examined across six data points. Countries looked at were Australia, New Zealand, Germany, the United Kingdom, United States and Canada and these markets are covered by three different safety authorities.
To gain an overall safety rating the ratings of the three individual agencies were analyzed under Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP). In addition the study looked at whether key safety assistance systems were universally available on each model.

Naa they just steal intellectual property where they can and copy stuff but build crap quality rofl
I'll rephrase that for you
China steals a idea and tries to make it better rofl no respect for patents or intellectual property rights

Still have to buy all the resources through China.
No, historically America has never liked competition. It's not going to like it now. They always have an excuse.
@@kickithard It all makes sense once you realize Biden is trying to make China rich

Ironically MG still have a small presence at Longbridge Birmingham. Change can come pretty fast. The UK motorcycle industry was just about wiped out by the Japanese in the 1970's, European car manufacturers need to move to a war footing if they are going to have any chance of being around by 2030.
Our domestic producers have higher labor costs vs cheap Chinese slave labor

" (The) The Chinese government will pay these automakers cash directly into their bank accounts for every single car that they sell in Europe they're being incentivized to do this," The statement may be outdated.

Exactly what part of the long term sociological conflict with Japan does not drive China's government for global domination in the auto industry at the expense of Japan through no matter how many life times it takes, taking out everyone else along the way as collateral damage, if they have to. And the thing is its you and me "the consumer" who will decide. Down the pub "Im never buying Chinese rubbish". Guess what you possibly are already, or at least a 50% of content. Or have I got that wrong, as I say I only know engineering .............sorry.
Is BYD selling at a profit ?
Is BYD subsidized by the Chinese Government ?
To reduce gasoline usage, some cities in China offer a maximum subsidy of 72,000 RMB for Volkswagen electric vehicles, 33,000 RMB for Tesla cars, and 22,000 RMB for Li Auto vehicles. In China, the subsidies are provided to consumers for purchasing cars, not to car companies
Are you still going to do a Patreon update soon?
Mate, great video, but you've got cut that out that frog analogy at the end 😢
100% tariff on a 9k$ car means it’s 18k$ which half of price for an EV in the US. And again who pays for the Tariffs? The consumer or the company that ship cars to the USA?
No matter where you live, drive an electric car, please. If you can find a cheaper one, go for it. It is not about business. It is about saving our planet.
i think we just want a greener car without getting ripped off and having to mortgage the house .. bring it on 🙏 let market forces play it out ( called capitalism isnt it ? )
Every western country should apply significant tariffs on Chinese EVs to preserve their freedom. The Chinese are subsidizing their EV manufacturers because they want to bankrupt western automakers. This gives them the economic leverage to prevent retaliation when they invade Taiwan and blackmail other neighboring countries into submitting to demands for expanded fishing rights, etc.
The only thing that counts is the price.
When the Chinese hackers, ‘upgrade’ your software, with a ransom demand…… you’ll think differently.
I think the West has taken the Chinese Car Makers for granted. Like Elon Musk
was laughing, although years ago, when mentioned to him BYD. I just hope the
other US. & Eutope car makers can match the Chinese in technology, & style.
How come nobody was entitled to to stop European or Merican car maker's "overcapacity"? But instead they were forced to open up local markets to them
China did not open. The forced them to make joint ventures with local companies. And used those JVs to learn all the processes and tech, and then pass that to others in the industry in China. So the West gave over all their IP for a share of some profits for a few years.
Because Capitalism was never about having a level playing field.
Capitalism is about rigging the game and laughing while suckers still try to win!
If you're not cheating, you're not trying!
@@stephendaley266 Capitalism has many flaws. Thankfully, it is much better than all the other ways of organizing a civilization that humans have tried so far. Capitalism incentivizes people to be creative and contribute more to get more reward. In the process, they give their customers products and services. The world keeps getting better.
Humanity has been on an exponential learning curve for most of history. We are far enough up the curve that the pace of change is staggering. Hold on, because by 2030 we are going to see many amazing changes (keep an eye on the e/acc team as they rapidly iterate on core parts of society).
@vincewestin You are just mindlessly repeating Capitalist propaganda.
I hope you grow up someday and think for yourself.
Good luck with all that.
@@stephendaley266 I retired, so not much more growing. I am a happy capitalist. Life is awesome, and so is the USA. I thank God for his grace on us.
If the U.S. Government charges a tariff on cars, who gets the money? The U.S. Government or U.S. car manufacturers?
No one can stop China.
