Setting The Wrists This Way Creates A SIMPLE & EFFORTLESS Golf Swing

- This video will teach you how to simplify down the wrist set/wrist hinge so that you can control the face, create great width, get on plane, de-loft the club and massively improve your impact position. In this video I will talk about the correct way to simply set the wrists so that you can produce a simple and effortless golf swing!
A lot of amateurs do not know how to set the wrists/hinge the wrists correctly in the golf swing. As a result the causes the club to get off plane, they lose control over the clubface creating, most commonly, a very open clubface throughout the golf swing. All in all this will result in huge inconsistencies in your golf game, making it far harder than it needs to be.
In this video I will go through how the left hand and right hand need to individually work to create the proper wrist set. As well as this I will go through the correct way they need to work together in order to work as one super efficient unit. Not only this but I run through an amazing alignment stick drill that will speed up your learning ensure you master this move. Finally, and most importantly, I run through the reason as to why focusing on one hand rather than the other will massively help you improve how quickly you learn this move.
By following the steps in this video you will learn how to set the wrist/hinge the wrists correctly in your swing. This will produce a better impact position, more shaft lean, better clubface control and compression. If you can do this then you will play better golf and your scores will start to lower fast!

Omg! Rarely do I pick anything up from YT that’s going to be an absolute game changer but I watched this earlier before playing. Only had time to hit 15 balls before heading out but I the feeling of hinging the right hand was the missing piece for me. Was able to rotate much better through the ball which took the stress off my back. Strike was pure through the bag and divots nice and shallow.
Scored crap but nothing to do with ball striking, I play off 2 and had a terrible day on the greens. Still walked off feeling like I’d made a breakthrough which is why I came back to leave this comment. Massive thank you. My coach has been trying to get me to use my hips better for months. 👍
Glad I could help!
Really good way to think of wrists! Thank you
You're so welcome!
Excellent , detailed explanation of the takeaway and proper wrist tilt . Best explanation that I’ve seen yet ! Great work !

Giles - Tiger said to not watch YoutTube - but this video has changed my game. It's the advice I needed for a natural takeaway. Thank you so much
We should tell tiger this 😂
Why not?
tiger doesn't need it, he already found it. we're still trying to find it.
This is IMHO your best lesson! So Good. The left hand going down to right toe fixes so much. Tilt, saying centered over ball etc!
Exactly! Glad it helped!
Giles, your videos are consistently excellent but this one takes the cake. IMO it’s one of, if not THE BEST instruction videos I’ve seen, as well as very timely for me.
First, kudos for acknowledging that there isn’t just one dominant side in a golf swing. I’m a right-handed person (I write, throw, and play racquet sports with my right hand) who plays golf left-handed… Canadian, eh. I find it irritating that most golf instruction presumes that the trail side is a golfer’s dominant side. There is no difference between a left-handed swing and right-handed swing except for the side of the ball on which one stands. There is, however, a massive difference between a right-sided swing and a left-sided swing as you pointed out. Any lessons I’ve taken that required my left side (my trail side) to be dominant have failed. They may have worked on the lesson tee and for a few holes in the next round but in the heat of battle the naturally dominant side (right side for me) wants to run the show. Precious little golf instruction recognizes that fact.
Second, I recently purchased a HackMotion training aid. It’s a genius device and I’ve been slowly making progress with it towards correcting overextension in my lead wrist both at the top of my swing and at impact. After seeing your suggestion to push the lead hand down toward the trail big toe, I tried it in my basement training station. Using the HackMotion audio feedback function, I found I was consistently able to keep my lead wrist in the recommended ranges both at the top and at impact without any unnatural-feeling manipulation. Your timing couldn’t have been better. Thank you and keep up the great work my friend!
Wow everything you said in here is spot on and like you said I don’t know many coaches that talk about dominate sides. Might be worth me doing a full swing video on this topic.
The other great thing is the data has back up that you’re doing the correct things which will fill you confidence!
Glad you enjoying the content

I love what you said about the dominant side of the body. I’ve always said the left arm is the swinging arm and the right arm is the firing arm(for right handed golfers). This is difficult for a lot of right handed golfers because their left side of the body is like a new born calf. It’s all about thinking about it correctly in the mind and then executing.

@@robmoon6442 thank you so much!

The pushing down action with the lead hand is something few instructors mention. Even fewer mention the underlying cause and effect of the physics ❤👍
The brilliant thing about the Vardon-style grip in which the pad of the trail hand is up over the lead thumb is how it forces the trail wrist into maxed out extension very quickly in the backswing when the pushing down action of the lead hand is used. As metioned here, that maxing out of the trail wrist then forces the trail arm to fold elbow down, the same biomechanics used by a food server lifting and controlling a heavy tray with LEVERAGE rather than strength. In the golf swing that trail arm folding leverage is what allows the golfer to automatically and effortlessly guide the club up and back down on a path which allows the golfer to stay in balance-not critical for generating power, but essential for consistently accurate ball striking.
The biggest faults I see in recreational golfers are: 1) not applying the Vardon style grip correctly and as a result not getting the ideal automatic trail arm action, and; 2) as a result of the club head mass not automatically swinging on the ideal balanced path they must grip the handle with their finger too tightly which inhibits the lag and release which generates the most club head acceleration.
Great description of the Vardon grip! Glad you liked the video 🙌🏻
When I practice ive been experimenting with push down feeling but had no idea where to focus the motion so big thanks for this instruction

Thank you so much I am a left-handed player, right side dominant and that’s just made perfect sense ps 🇬🇧

I’m right hand dominant but play left handed always have when swinging a bat or club so pushing down on my right makes sense, best coaching videos on TH-cam in my opinion.
Exactly that and now you can see why! Thank you!

@@pastorjason4337 oh okay
Outstanding! As a right-side dominant player, I could never feel the left wrist working like it should in the backswing. As soon as I shifted my focus to hinging my right wrist, great things began to happen. Been playing the game for 35 years and misinterpreted the one-piece takeaway as a very late wrist set (which turns into cupping, overswinging, etc.). While focusing on the right wrist hinging (which feels very) earlier in the backswing, the results are outstanding. My shot height is back, but compression is solid and divots look great. Handle is in front of clubhead at impact as verified by video. Thank you!
Perfect! Hopefully this will be the turning point for this move now
Great video. Well explained. You have a new subscriber from Finland 🇫🇮 👌🏻
Awesome, thank you! Always wanted to go to Finland!
amazing !!
Thank you! Cheers!
As a lefty, I’ve always tried to flatten my lead (right) wrist and haven’t got anywhere. I started to focus on my trail wrist after seeing this video by having the feeling of holding a tray flat at the top of my backswing and then keeping that feeling down into impact and I must say, I’ve never hit it better. This is forcing me to rotate through impact whilst having a great amount of shaft lean and my ball flight is much more penetrating and consistent. It makes much more sense to focus on the side you are more dominant with rather than the other. Great video Giles 👏🏻
Thank you & goes to show how a switch in emphasis can make a huge difference
Thanks Giles, for emphasising, that as a right side dominated player, I can concentrate on pulling up with my right hand. The left hand push down (only), just wasn't working for me and I'd lose other aspects of the swing by doing so.
Great! Glad I can help you focus on the right things
Great Video. Sweden here. Cheers....:)

I lost my swing for the last six months and couldn’t get it back. Couple of weeks back I started doing this out of desperation and began hitting amazing shots. I wasn’t sure if this was correct or just another manipulation to get by, so thank you so much for validating. Very clear to the point… subscribed!
One thing, sometimes I get the feeling my hands aren’t on the grip properly. Sometimes too strong or weak, can’t figure that out. Can you do a video on how they go on and feel, especially with the driver and woods. As the clubs get longer the feeling changes?
So the grip should feel the same no matter what club you’re using. I do have a video on the grip so be sure to check that out
Good advice!
Thank you!
You have single handedly transformed my golf swing for the better. Takeaway and turning the wheel drill really felt like a break through moment.
I’m glad I could help!
69 years old 4 handicap. Shot 72 yesterday after watching this video. In addition to your insights, be aware that when you push down with left and pull back with right, the "downward" centered load is extremely powerful and my "over the top" tendency did not disappear, thus some pulls and slices. Many of my swings did not shallow coming down. Please comment on transition from top . I just subscribed to your channel Giles and thanks.
The wrist set won’t affect the over the top. I have videos on the over the top so check them out but there are a multitude of different reasons why you could do that
Excellent
Thank you!
Hey! Would you be able to make a video on how the forearms/wrists work on the down swing to impact and then release. Sorry I’m a brand new player and been just obsessed with learning and improving. My biggest flaw right now is consistent contact. I’m confused on how to roll my forearms and release my wrist set before impact or some other coaches mention to get into P6 formation and just rotate through without using any arms or wrist.
Thank you for being extremely helpful
I have some great videos on the release
Thank you Giles on the explanation. For driver, do we also set the wrist the same way as irons?
Yes the same way. Glad you enjoyed the video
Great breakdown, I have gotten a lot better the last few years but kept telling my coach that I just don't understand how the wrists are supposed to work and it has led to a lot of inconsistencies and hurt my power. I would try to keep my left wrist flat or bowed at the top of my swing but it always feels like I am fighting it on the downswing.
Hope this adds clarity to how the wrists are supposed to work
Very nice lesson. Has helped me improve my ball connection hugely. Weirdly though, im 10-15 yards shorter for my mid to long irons using this technique. Hitting the ball very straight, flushing it nicely, but yeah, shorter than before. I'll gladly sacrifice 10 yards or so to be straighter and more consistent, but i was wondering why im losing distance.
Is it coming out flatter?
No, not really. Ball flight pretty similar. For my 3 and 4 irons, a wee flatter alright. Thanks for the reply by the way!
@@tippytess no problem. Could be a few things… clubhead speed might have dropped due to it being a new move, potentially you’re more tense slowing you down, if you’re hitting it flat then you might not be optimised in terms of ball flight or it could have set off a downswing chain reaction
@Gilesgillgolf thanks very much! I guess I just have to gwt used to a new look swing and swimg thoughts. Thanks for the reply mate. It's really helped my ball striking. Currently looking at one of your driver tutorials. Some excellent tuition on display

Great video Giles. Are you familiar with Joe Dante's teaching on the early wrist set ? What you discuss here has some familiarity with that but I actually prefer the feels that you describe (i.e. push back to big toe). Thanks
I’m not no. Just to be clear this is how the wrists work. Doesn’t mean you have to set them early. You can set them later but in this fashion
@@Gilesgillgolf Thanks - and agree I prefer the wrists to set naturally in the backswing as part of the shoulder turn rather than preset early.

Canada, and just subscribed from watching this one vid. I get torn between setting my wrists like this or instead more of a one piece takeaway where my wrists don’t set till a bit later (hasn’t be working consistently). Are most tour pro’s actively pushing down on the handle like this?
Great to hear you’re watching from Canada! Different players think of different things but yes some will do for sure
Yeah i took this to the course today and with my irons i was pinching the ball against the ground and getting a nice 5 yard drawl, my irons were going a little further than normal, was hitting my 9 iron 160, pw 140, need to compensate for that , but my woods and driver was pretty crazy, few times i pulled it to the other side of the next fairway, pretty scary, any thoughts? shot an 82, decent score for me, felt nice if i can control the woods

Hello Love the videos!
I do have a question in general for anyone. What are my wrists and forearms to do on the down swing before impact? Does it stay in the same position during the back swing or does it release a little bit to get on the down swing to get back to impact position.
The forearms are rotating, the wrist are down cocking & also gradually releasing the angles

Very interesting. I was trying this out at the range today. One of my shots with my pitching wedge carried 142 yards and ended up at 150 yards! 😯 ball speed of 103 mph, launch angle 23 deg, height of 24 yards with a landing angle of 41 deg. My standard PW carries 108 yards, max distance 112 yards. launch angle 26 deg. My question is what should my optimum launch angle be? What should I be aiming at? I know it is variable for each club. My best shot with my PW was equalling my standard 7 iron shot!!!! Unbelievable but it was only one in 5 shots the others totalled out at 131 yards. Im living in NZ😃
That’s still a big jump in your overall average! Now it’s time to grove the move. Good luck
Another question, does this only apply to irons or can you use this with your driver too?
@@peterguildford2133 Applies with all clubs

Hi Giles, my mentor told me to actually open more clubface (more cup wrist) because my iron speed was slow (~75 mph) by open clubface give me higher flight and can make it stop on the green. Should i stay a lil cupped? Or bow my wrist for lower flight which one do u recommend? Thanks!
Yes if you don’t have a huge amount of speed I’d work back to more of a neutral position
Hi, does this work with all clubs including woods and driver in particular please? Thanks
Yes works for all clubs

@@TaskersFishingAdventures good luck!
Giles would you suggest you do this drill for driver too
You can do yes
my question is does the back of the left wrist need to be facing the target at impact or can it be facing the right of the target. I have found that I have to strengthen my grip to hit it straightish. For the life of me I can't supinate my left wrist enough to have it point at the target at impact. Is this a match up thing with my body anatomy?
Depends on your grip so yes it’s a matchup
Is this a gradual feel or do we want to immediately push down towards ground while adding extension on trail hand?
Gradual feel
Great job !!! Thanks a lot !

Hi Giles, would this apply to driver and woods?
Yes it would
And do you do this motion with drivers as well?
