- This video tutorial is a review of CNC router design software, and discusses what is the best design software for CNC routers, especially if you are a CNC beginner. There are many design software packages available. There is free and paid software you can use.
this video discusses the pros and cons of the 5 most common design software CNC router users use. They are Easel, Carbide Create, Fusion 360, Carveco Maker and Vectric Vcarve, and Aspire.
There are many other design software packages people use. Many do not have the CAM feature,. Using these may be helpful, but require you to use multiple software to accomplish what these 5 will do in one package.

This is exactly the kind of video I was looking for. I have a small cheap CNC machine that I got for a gift. It has basically been sitting unused for over a year. My biggest issue is finding the right kind of software to use. You did a great job explaining the different software options.

Hello Garrett, greetings from the other side of the world. (Lebanon) am a hobbyist woodworker with an engineering background. For people that do this for a hobby/ extra income fusion 360 is a great tool, it has a steep learning curve , but all the models / designs that u showed can be done on it. Also lot of ressources on how to design/ manufacture are available and there is a great community on the net.

Another GREAT video Garrett! The comment I strongly agree with is at 23.36! I definitely appreciate style! The main things I noticed when comparing Vectric and Carveco free trials, are Carveco trial 3 times longer and allows you to export your projects for machining. The more of your videos I watch however the more Iean to Vectric, with it's in my opinion more friendly interface. Thanks again for all you do for us CNC Router neophytes and the CNC Router at large!

Thanks Garrett, as we discussed in a recent e-mail, I had pretty much decided on the VCarve Pro. I used the link to purchase it today and ordered some of the Starbond glue while I was there. I haven't received a notice from Sienci regarding when my router will ship, but they had said mid to late March when I ordered it. Anxious to get started.

I use F360 for my 3d printing models as well as my CNC router. Is it overkill? Perhaps, But it is a one stop shop. It does everything the others do plus 100 times more. I have much more control over my toolpaths as well. I have used most of the programs listed and none come anywhere close to F360. You failed to mention that there is a free slightly limited version of F360 for hobbyists that even with it's limitations is still more powerful than the rest of these. Sure there is a learning curve for someone just starting out but you didn't title this as for beginners. It's worth taking the time to learn F360. Once you do your workflow can be so much faster and and with greater control over your projects. I use the paid version because I use it for my business but a hobbyist can get by on the free version rather easily.
Hey Matthew. If you are using it and it works, then you have a very powerful software. Stay with it. It is not the best to use for newbies because it is complex.

Nice recap. A couple of things - Fusion 360 does have a free version, but I do agree with you, it's complex and really oriented towards engineering projects. Carbide Create has much of the functionality of VCarve or Carveco it's just that their menus/options are hidden vs showing up in the panel all the time. Both Carbide & Carveco are good ones to start with for someone brand new to CNC and isn't sure they're going to keep at it.
I'm a VCarve Pro guy myself. VCarve Desktop does let you do larger than 24x24" - you just need to define the project as a "tiled" project. Not super difficult. You have to do the same with VCarve Pro if you want to do something longer than your CNC's footprint. Otherwise I don't believe there's much difference between the two.
BTW, I'd put you at the top of the list of VCarve TH-camrs. Mark Lindsay is a good guy but you seem to focus more on taking someone through a project. It's like you're showing people how to make something they want. Mark tends to be feature oriented - showing how to use a program feature. It's a subtle difference but most new folks just want to make something, they don't really care what program features you need to make that happen. Show them how to use the software to make something and that's what they need, they'll learn by doing that. Having a "how to use the tiling feature" video doesn't do the same thing because they may not know they need tiling so might never check it out and learn. Mike's stuff is almost all Aspire so it's often going to disappoint people who find out they can't do what he's showing them in the other Vectric products.

I have been looking at CNC machine for the last while and I've been at pause because of the high price points. But when I came across longmill benchtop I thought, there must be something wrong with it. I researched it quite abit and found that if this is there price point this could be perfect for me however was still reserved about purchasing. Your expert review was awesome. I am glad you are covering ever aspect of the longmill and the software that is needed to have the very best for the best price is making my decision is on point with you.
I have some projects that I'm looking to do that involves silhouetting images but don't know how to smooth the lines to make it crisper. Hope you have ideas for that or a video soon.

Great video, as usual. Question for you... the Vcarve desktop is limited to a 24 x 24 work area and that is what my Yora silverback is, but can you set up a project that carves in tiles that would allow you to carve a porch sign.
Mike, that is exactly what you can do! The tiling feature would allow you to carve a bigger project in tiles with Vcarve desktop.

Been looking at a few CNC options. I want something mid sized (30"x30") strictly for
wood, don't need metal work done. I have been looking at Longmill MK2, YoraHome Silverback and Shapeoko Pro XXL
. My biggest concern is getting one and then finding out it's too complicated to use. I assume I can use free software that can help me over the learning curve and them upgrade to a paid, offline option. Of the 3 manufacturer's I mentioned which would you suggest for the home wood worker looking to to personalize items and mass produce smalls on?
More Than Enough Woodworks, there's a lot of really great machines out there my friend, including the ones you've mentioned above. All should be able to do the job you're looking for. But my opinion is going to be a little biased being a longmill man myself! I just made a new video about what you should be looking for in a machine and why. On online vs. offline: like you, I tend to favor offline software, but there are some significant advantages to the browser-based online software. Two of the biggest are that you have access to, and can work on, your designs wherever you are, as long as you have an Internet connection; and that there's no need to install anything on your computer. The former is helpful if you travel and/or work on more than one computer; the latter is helpful for a number of reasons, one of the bigger ones being that you're using something other than Windows.
Dan, that always is a good question. Sometimes the internet decides to not work for whatever reason and you want to make a project still! In that case, offline software might be the way to go.
@@IDCWoodcraft Agreed--there are numerous drawbacks to online software (and the modern trend of putting everything "in the cloud", i.e., on someone else's computer). But there are also some advantages that I thought were worth pointing out. There are pros and cons to everything.

Hi Fred. Gsender is not a CAM program. It processes the g-code. You will need to generate gcode first. Make sense?
I'm a complete newbie, and I have been using Easel pro 30-day trial because that is what Yora recommended. After watching this video, I was going to try Vectric because of the training available, and it looks like it has more features I might use in the future. One thing I like better about Easel pro is I don't have to send the design to gSender control software to run the project because that is built right into Easel, so now I don't know what I want to do LOL
Mike, decisions decisions!! Best bet is to try out both with a bunch of different projects and see what one works best for you.

Hello, my question is, can you scan a design to V carve? I sketch my own designs or lettering on paper, then apply it to the wood piece and using a hand router to make the cuts. I am very interested in purchasing the Longmill but my first step is knowing the different software. Thank You
Hi Ron. Take a picture of it and import the bitmap. then the software will trace it for you.
I've been using easel for my my xcarve, I also use it to generate gcode for my Queenbee, but run the Qb with the openbuilds interface. I got easel for one year free with my Xcarve, and I bought another year, I admit I don't like the online and subscription of it, but it makes my workflow just so much easier.
I bought Vcarve desktop to learn and then I'll be getting the Vcarve pro instead of that next year of Easel

@@IDCWoodcraft I also lean toward easel because their subscription also comes with a TON of usuable files ranging from thousands of topics, it's a great start being able to use pictures already on the software, various fonts n such. It's a great stimulus for the imagination for future projects too.

I have watched several of your video's on beginning CNC users. I will be puchasing a longmill and v-carve pro after the first of the year. You refer to requiring g-Code several times to get v-carve to actually function. Is g-code in v-carve or is it a seperate purchase?
Cheat code is the program vCarve rights to make your CNC router do what it's supposed to do. You don't need to know g-code

Great explanations on all the software. Question: if you buy the vertical pro but don't upgrade it for couple years is there any problem you can think of? If it works today it should be able to work indefinitely as long as the computer stays the same. Is my thinking correct?
SamSpace, that is exactly right brother! Although it is still a good idea to update the software to get the latest features, you can still work off line without issues.

Thats a tough one Southern Joe. They are both so different. One is geared more towards woodworkers and the other is geared more towards engineers and machinists. Both are great software packages.
Try both. Fusion is free and you can download a trial version of vetric too. See what one you like the most!
I have actually got both it’s just that Fusion works the way I think with numbers and all. I import the Fusion into VCarve to fine tune the cut paths, it is better at that. Thanks for all the help and keep up the great videos

Jason, I recommend using lightburn for your laser programming and laser cutting and then switching to another software like vCarve and then gSender /UGS (universal gcosde sender) for your CNC router projects. You can control a spindle with gSender/ UGS.

Muluken, that is a whole different beast than CNC routers brother. AVID CNC sells a good plasma system but there are tons of great plasma systems out there.
Great video, Garrett. I watch all of my information videos on my desktop computer in my bedroom, but I run my Bob's CNC Quantum from my laptop in the shop. Can I buy the Vectric V Carve Desktop using my desktop computer and transfer it to my laptop, or must I use the laptop to order the software? What about G Code Sender? How much more will it cost me for that?
You can have Vectric software on two computers and you will only need to buy it once! Also, gCode sender is free!
Hey Garrett, I have ordered the MK2 Longmill and have been excitedly watching all your videos so I have some knowledge when my cnc arrives in the next few months. Do you know if its possible to upgrade Vectric softwares without having to pay the full price. (IE. I have vectric desktop, but would like to upgrade to vectric aspire) Keep up the great work! I see that you have what seems to be a laptop and two screens incorporated into the Longmill. Is it possible to work on a desktop in a different location and move it to the CNC via thumb drive? Why two monitors? Would it be prudent to obtain the software and practice until my CNC is delivered?

MrBwest9476, the updates for the version that you buy are free brother! Vectric just released version 12 and so all software updates until version 13 are free. This happens every couple of years and if you would like you can always pay a modest amount to upgrade to the latest and greatest!
Can you have bith vetric and another lets say Easel on your cpu and use both or will one not run if another program is on cpu?
Hi Brett. You can run them both. Easel is web-based so it doesn't matter.

Garrett Something you failed to mention on your video on Vectric software, they also have many tutorials . Also, they have many projects you can download. Finally, you and always upgrade the version you have some cost difference at a later date. Finally, the are always updating there software with new features, some at no additional cost

I used FreeCad to design the gears of a Wooden Gear Clock from plans from a scroll saw magazine I got several years back. It's more of an engineering CAD program like Fusion 360 but without the cost. I'll probably continue to use it for the small amount of engineering work I'll be doing. Vectric or Aspire are the two I'm considering. The fact that I can purchase Vectric now and upgrade to Aspire later for just the difference in price is a good selling point in my opinion.
My Longmill is still in the shipping box. The workshop construction got delayed from June 2021 to this coming spring. I can't even build the table for it because all of my power tools are crammed into my garage with no 220V power ;(.
The idea of cutting all those gears on a scroll saw was just too daunting for me. The CNC will be able to cut the gears very quickly and extremely accurately. If I need to make adjustments to any of the gears it's just a few keystrokes and back to the CNC.

I have no desire to hand-cut gears. You will love the software gadgets to help you with that!
@@IDCWoodcraft Most of my big tools (table saw, planer, etc) are 220V. The garage is crammed full of those tools and other household stuff so there’s no room for the CNC even if I could build a table for it now. I’m in this predicament because ‘I chose poorly’ when it came to the first concrete contractor and now I’m back to square one. We break ground in early spring so until then I’m watching videos like yours and learning the basics of the required software.
On another subject I watched a few videos from Peter at CNCnutz on testing V-bit angles. Apparently due to manufacturing tolerances the actual angle of a V-bit might be off a degree or two affecting the quality of a project. Have you run into this?

Hello there. Very in depth. Saves so much research and money. One question, if I get vectrec pro that does 3d can I import 3d models without aspire? Is there a robust 3d model marketplace? Can you easily upgrade and downgrade with vectric?
Scott, you can import 3d models into vetric pro but not edit them. I would check out Esty for any 3d models that you may need. You can upgrade vetric but you cant downgrade once you have paid for it. The price to upgrade is only the differential between the version you have and the version you want.

@@shughes599 yes. The one drawback is vectric does not have an auto update feature. You have to update it manually through the help menu.

Hi Abel. All the Vectric products run great on my Macbook Pro running Parallels. It's a great tri-boot system, OSX, Windows and Linux all on one laptop.

I’ve been using my CNC for a month now and tried carbide and easel and both seem to be severely lacking. I’m about to try the vcarve free trial and I think I’m going to like it. If I do, will I still be able to use your affiliate link when the free trial is over? Or should I use a crap email account and start again when I go to purchase? Also, can I transfer the software on a new pc when i upgrade my current laptop? My current laptop is a potato.
None, you can use the affiliate link once you are done using your free trial. Once you buy a new laptop you can transfer and re download the software no problem.

Great info for beginners, especially for someone who knows "NOTHING" about CNC. Just bought a 1610 engraving CNC to test the waters and it's not looking so good. The free Candle software included in the kit does not want to communicate with the hardware. Communication port is open, but not controllable through my laptop. It looks like this attempt at CNC will be a bust....again.
Hi John. I'm glad you found this helpful. As you are finding, the "test the waters" machines are not so good. Make it frustrating with little support. That's why I recommend to to research first. Also why I got a longmill.
Is Vectric an all in one program in that it will allow you to design all the way to running the CNC? Are all these programs like that?

I want to use the vcarve software but I am weary about not being able to use it with my Shapeoko. Can I use the Vcarve to control my Shapeoko or do I still have to use Carbide motion. If I still have to use Carbide motion do I need a program to transfer it from Vcarve to the Carbide motion. Can I still do tool changed with Vcarve. So may Questions, but Vcarve is a big purchase for a beginner knowing nothing at all.
Richard, reach out to Shapeoko regarding using it with Vcarve. No matter what software you use, you will need a machine controller like Carbide motion or gSender. Shapeoko will be able to give you a postprocessor that will work with vCarve. Regarding your tool changes, that is up to how Shapeoko set up their post processor to allow the machine to stop during those commands.

I'm not a big Apple fan, only bring that up because some people are. My thinking is; if web based software then any OS should work. But, if local software then PC or Mac?
Also, is using the software without owning a CNC fist have any benefits? Again, my thinking is to learn as much as I can before purchasing a CNC.

i don't know about Android. I believe the all can run on MAC with something called Parallel. It is a PC emulator. With Web-based, it is not an issue. In general, most CNC software will not run on MAC without a PC emulator.
Just so you know, i run my Vectric on a standard $600 HP laptop. No graphics driver. For Aspire, I would suggest a grapjics driver.
Of course, you can learn the software any time independant of having a CNC.

@@IDCWoodcraft You can also use Virtualbox which creates a virtual machine on the MAC as well. I have a MAC but I run all my CNC stuff from my Windows 10 laptop. Also you might want to consider a backup drive for your CNC stuff as well, if you plan on running a business CNC shop. I have a NAS (network attached storage) server that I built that has all my CNC files (.crv and g-code) that has 2 500 MB drives that are mirrored in case I lose a drive. Now the gSender will run on a MAC, Windows, and Linux.

@@IDCWoodcraft Virtualbox is free, but it can be a pain to setup sometimes. Now with MacOS, you can do a dual boot Mac/Windows, it's called boot camp and it's installed with MacOS and it has the drivers for the Mac equipment (keyboard, touchpad, audio, etc) if someone doesn't want to do a virtual machine.
agreed V carve is the best software overall, sure you have to pay for it, but the available tutorials and support, updates, range of use and ease of use, make it far superior to all the others. aspire is pricey but you dont have to get it right away, its an additional upgrade. fusion is faaaar too complicated unless you are familiar with it.

Ok so I’m researching. I haven’t bought my cnc yet. I want to be ready when I receive it like I did with my laser. I do believe your video has sold me on the vcarve desktop pro. After all of that, I know I need to know what program to run my CNC with. There are plenty of videos on design software, but not so much after that. Can you point me in the right direction.
Check it first, you bring up a great question brother and the answer depends on which machine you have/end up getting. For instance the longmill uses UGS or gsender, but different machines use different programs.

I decided to rewatch this. The difference between carve and aspire?
If I want to utilize two or three 3D clip art pieces in order to produce a nature scene, for instance, a stag head up front with several trees in the back, a mother deer with her fawn in the background. This would possibly use five or six cliparts. Am I able to produce that in V-Carve?
I think Carvco will do that.

I want to use Vectric but I can't afford the paid version right now . It says the trial is unlimited use but you can't save g-code or export some things. Is it still worth using it?
The trial version is there to learn. It will not let you make anything outside of the software. Meaning, you can design anything you want in it, but you can't make anything that you design. Does that make sense?
Rewatching after running into a major roadblock trying to v-carve inlays with Fusion 360. I agree with you that Fusion360 is probably more powerful and complicated than what the average hobbyist needs, but I like CAD and don't mind the learning curve at all. But v-carve inlays is Fusion's Achille's heel. It just can't do them and that is what I'm most interested in. So here I am, getting ready to abandon a powerful yet free software option. grrrr. /just venting in comment section.
Vent away my friend. We get frustrated because it makes us feel out of control a bit. In the end, there's not much we can do but surender and move forward.
Hi Garrett, what software do you use to write a G-code as I cannot use Easel because of my poor Internet connection so I bought Vcarve V11and I keep getting an error command "T1M6" and both UGS and Candle will no run because of that command and the Vcarve V11 which is the latest will only save in .Tap format I have written to Vectric but with no answer do you know the problem I'm getting and I don't like Carbide.
You are using the wrong post processor. When you tell it to save the toolpath, just above the save button is the post processor list. You need to select the post processor for your machine.
The post processor tells vector how to write the g code. It is writing it for different machine.

I guess the question I would like to have answered is, what are the metrics for service uptime/downtime for the online programs. I have very robust service and rarely have an interruption with my service. So the vulnerability for me would be the actual downtime from the program provider. This stuff should be cloud based so the software should basically not go down except a very rare widespread event.
Hi Walter. That's a good question. A suggest that you ask people who use those programs to see if they have much in downtime. Since I don't use the others I don't know.

Margaret, you won't need Easel with vcarve my friend. But you will need a program called gsender which is free.

Check it first, you're right brother. For Vetric you'll need to use UGS in conjunction with Vcarve.

Hey Parmpreet, first off welcome to the channel and I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos! In terms of programs to learn, I teach using the Vetric software program. In terms of finding a job using your CNC skills, I think it really varies on where you are living and the types of positions available. A lot of our CNC brothers and sisters have their own business selling their products and not many tend to work for others (that I know of). It's absolutely do-able though if it's something you're interested in! I would also recommend checking out this PDF I've made for beginners as it has a list of videos I've made listed in order. Which post processor you need will depend on your specific machine, to find this out I recommend reaching out to your machine manufacturer and they should be able to guide you to the right direction!

Hi, I just got a little CNC just to learn on. I did not want to spend a lot on something that I may not like doing. but after I got everything and installed the flash drive and it said I installed iI then clicked ok I tried to pul up some of the programs with no success. I'm so frustrated.

Scott, that is a little bit of a complicated question depending upon what design software you have.
I would also like to use the Vectric software when my Longmill gets here but to start out, 660 euros excluding taxes for the pro version is a bit expensive atm. Since the Longmill is 30x30 inches and the Vectric Desktop only processes 24x24 inches, I would definately need the pro otherwise I can't use the full size of my longmill. I'd need to convince my wife somehow to spend another 800 euros or so for that software besides the 1700 euros for the longmill. Just looking at the website of Carbide Create, it seems they also have Vcarving in there, so I'll give that a try first.
Good call PowerPC. Have you considered just buying Vetric Desktop and upgrading later? It will only cost you the difference in price between the two. A lot of CNC guys and gals rarely ever use more than 24x24 either!
@@IDCWoodcraft It seems VCarve Desktop is 330 euros excluding taxes while the Pro version is 660 euros without tax. And upgrading from desktop to pro seems to be only 170 euros instead of 330 euros. So maybe I should buy the desktop version first, then upgrade to the pro and pay only 500 euros instead of 660 for the pro on day 1.
