Badass stash of discs there! Thanks for sharing! That DTS Stereo logo on Blown Away (and a few other MGM titles like Tank Girl) still confuses the hell out of people today, expecting to see their DTS decoder light up when they play the disc when it's just a PCM matrix surround track like Dolby Pro-Logic. I see people selling those as "DTS Surround" discs a lot, which much piss off some buyers when they think they've shelled out for the 5.1 version!

I still have loads of those magazines. They were so helpful in finding out what discs to pick up with their recommendations on picture and sound quality. It made me laugh when the editor of the magazine installed dts in his car! lol

Never realized they were still selling back issues for less than the cover price nowadays, so I just recently filled in the gaps in my collection and now have all of them except for the first two issues. They sure did love DTS, that's for sure! But yeah, the amount of information they dished out was stunning. It's the closest I can get to traveling back into time and picking the brain of the people behind the scenes. Just recently I saw someone on a forum complaining about the color timing on the Abyss Special Edition and then I get the back issues of WR in the mail and BAM! First issue I open, there's a crazy in-depth interview with James Cameron explaining every tiny element of The Abyss box, who did the color timing, what he used for reference etc. So great to have that kind of info!
Sam, I had a subscription to Cinescape magazine, and an in-depth article they did on laserdisc releases and home theatre set-ups are what got me interested in LDs....even though my parents would not got a player because of how expensive they were. But it's funny that now I own most of the releases from that article
The Fog is on Blu-Ray, at least in the United States through Shout Factory. It's a special edition with fantastic original cover art - worth importing if you have to.

The bad guy alien drug dealer in "Dark angel / I come in peace" starring Dolph Ludgren would of killed more people if he was using laserdisc as a weapon rather than CD

Great little collection there Oliver. You had a couple of Chuck Norris films there that you showed some interest. But if you want to see his best and earliest ones that made him a star check out his 1983 film 'Lone Wolf McQuade' with David Carradine. Great soundtrack and gun action, great stunts and a cool showdown between Norris and Carradine themselves. A must see. Highlight: Norris is buried alive in his 4x4 Dodge and some beer that he drinks and pours over himself before he breaks out of the ground.
I got into collecting laserdiscs about 5 years ago, and I own many of the same ones you have, and the quality of many of these releases continue to knock me out, like the CAV Jurassic Park and Criterion of Robocop. I completely agree about the sound quality of the Criterion laser of Ghostbusters; if you're watching Ghostbusters without killer sound you're missing out on some of the humor. When Ray's proton pack gets fired up for the first time, you FEEL it on the Dolby Surround track here, which is why Egon backs off.
Hello Oliver.You were asking yourself why the Uk version of The Fortress is slightly shorter(or the US version a bit. longer).In most cases it is all down to the difference between PAL system and NTSC.PAL(without going into specific terminology)essentially has a film play at 25 frames per second instead of the "usual"24.NTSC may have lower resolution and colour issues but it respects the timing.

I very nearly started collecting laserdisc but for me it would have been very much from a collectors view point, basically I just like the massive discs & the cool vinyl like sleeves they come in but after doing a lot of research on the format I realised that most the films released on laserdisc you can pick up next to nothing on dvd or they're the same shit that get repeated on tv each week so I decided it would be a waste of money to someone such as myself. I was also unaware of how prone a lot of the titles are to laser rot so I'm glad I didn't go for the collection in the end. Still always enjoy looking at others collections & you have a great collection, loved some of the cheesy ones lol.
Hello Oliver. I got the following doubt, here in Chile I received two offers. One is to buy a Laserdisc Player (NTSC) that could let me check some films that are not avaible on blu-ray (which is my favourite format by audio and video quality and last year I upgrade my equipment). The second one is a 16mm projector with some cartoons -none of them avaible on blu-, and that is sold by the former owner of some theaters and that collects 16mm an 8mm. Near my house here in Santiago there is the biggest post production center where they can digitalized this material and I could avoid the problems of movie projection and use my equipment (digital projector, digital receiver, etc). What would yo recomend me the LD or the traditional film? PD You got one of the coolest Laserdisc collection I've seen and that remembers the one that Mizpol (wherever he is) use to show in TH-cam.
4:53 “Who needs fifteen?!” If you had the die another day special edition dvd Oliver, they had the same amount if not more for the trailers and tv spots! It was ridiculous! I remember seeing quite a few, heck I think some of the bond films had a lot of trailers for many regions and other locales as well as the tv spots so it could get plenty of people running in to theatres to see it.
Are you eve r going to release a dvd set of all your reviews ? I think your retrospectives are the best reviews since Siskel and Ebert, and I enjoy watching them very much.It's always a pleasure when a true movie fan does a top notch review show. I didn't know that anybody continued to collect the format, I guess it's a tad like people who collect vinyl records(which I confess, I have a fair few). As for some of the titles you haven't watched yet; Darkman II: The Return Of Durant with Arnold Vosloo was no where near as good as the original. Darkman III: Die Darkman Die was a little better but not much. The most recent thing I saw Arnold Vosloo in was last night's episode of Grimm. You've never seen Unforgiven???!!!! Now that's just unforgivable! You gotta watch that, Oliver; that's a masterpiece! Looking forward to your Highlander III review.

Just watched the first 25mins and I'm enjoying it :-) My dad has some sort of laser disc, you have to load the 'cassette' containing the disc into the machine. It then ejects the plastic cassette.... Ever heard of it Oliver Harper ?
hey there bud, yes those types of discs are called CED. Instead of being read by a laser the player uses a needle very much like a vinyl player. If you take the disc out of the cassette ( caddy ) they look a lot like vinyl. That format didn't last long due to manufacturing defeats on many releases and varying picture quality.

Hey! I don't know how familiar you are with the Mortal Kombat Laserdisc, but there is lines in the movie that were in the theater that weren't on the DVD or Blu Ray. For example theres the scene with Lui Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya earlier in the film where they see Katana and Johnny says "When a girl looks at you like that, it usually means something." Then in the theater Sonya says "It means she's a bimbo." But in all of the home releases they cut out the bimbo line. Is that line in the Laserdisc??
Oliver, have you seen Close Encounters on the big screen? I first saw it on video in high school and felt kind of like yourself; I saw it at the cinema in 2004, and it was honestly one of the best film going experiences of my life. Totally different experience. I saw it again this past summer for the 40thth anniversary and relished it. Definitely check out the Criterion laserdisc if u can. Cheers!

Those big sleeves! I'd like to collect Laserdiscs. I've taken a look at a few and the transfers, particularly on late LD releases, look a lot like early dvd transfers, can you confirm this? Anyway I don't have a problem with this- as much as I love my Blurays I have a soft-spot regarding crappy picture quality. Even VHS noise and pops...I guess it's the authenticity and nostalgia factor. And because I'm weird.
Hi oliver. I'm looking to get into the laserdisc format and I was wondering if you could advise a good player I could buy? Some features I would like are- NTSC/pal, auto flip, multi disc changer, best possible picture quality, all the necessary outputs for 5.1 surround sound and as many video output options as possible ie. Scart, composite, s-video etc. I know its probably not possible to find all of these features in one LD player but if you know of a player that covers as many of these as possible I'd really appreciate a recommendation from you. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work on TH-cam!
If you want a player that plays NTSC/PAL I would recommend picking up the Pioneer CLD 515 and CLD 925 or you could buy the Denon LA 2300 model. Those all have auto flip, AC3 and the required outputs for sound and picture. Those are midrange players if you're on a tight budget and is a good start off point.

Oliver Harper do you have the american halloween 4 and 5 laserdiscs they have the original theatrical ultra stereo audio tracks but i can't find them anywhere.
A very enjoyable watch Oliver :-) Some cracking titles in there, very similar tastes to my good self as well ;-) How much is a decent laser disc player, I've been browsing on the bay and there's various makes etc Pioneer seems to be a common one. Ps: will you be doing a Christine retrospective?
GRUSS Newton oh good!. Well I just checked eBay and there is player on the there with the model no. HF7G. Its a Japanese model so you will need a stepdown converter. Its NTSC only. But it has all the right outputs for picture and sound. Avoid any of the DVL models which have a DVD player built in. The DVD playback will be awful by todays standards and the LD picture is the equivalent of a mid range player. If you don't want to fork out about £200 Id suggest getting hold of the Pioneer CLD925 model which was the last UK dedicated LD player. Always stick with Pioneer when it comes to LaserDisc.

Are you sure about True lies being Pan & Scan? James Cameron shoots in Super 35, which is quite the opposite of Pan & Scan: The 4:3 version should show MORE than the widescreen version.
My copy is in widescreen but there was a Pan and Scan (4:3) release www.lddb.com/laserdisc/06208/8640-80/True-Lies-(1994) I discuss Super 35 when I show the Mission Impossible LD.
I remember Millenium being a big deal when it was released. Of course it was eventually shown to be a huge dud, but it wasn't obscure at all during release year. Also, as great as Bruce Campbell is - it's Tim Curry that makes Congo great :)
Afternoon Mike, my collection since doing this video hasn't increased that much. I've given away some titles and purchased a few more. Im very picky on what I buy on LaserDisc now as I don't really have much space for more titles but im always on the look out for interesting films that I may have missed.
Oliver Harper If you check online there are some regular bluray players that only require a update with region free firmware. I put region free firmware on my Toshiba previously locked to region A player because I imported Arrow Film's release of the 'Burbs on bluray. Works like a charm.
the first and only time i saw a movie on lazer Disc was Bran Stoker Dracula from 92 back in the late 90s i was about 5 years old then i forgot about it then i got interested in this format if i were ever get one i would get john woos the killer and put it on my wall . i did buy my history teacher a lazer disc of the mask for 15 dollars
LaserDisc is only NTSC and PAL there is no region coding. Its analogue based. I'd suggest getting a dedicated NTSC player with the change over option for Side A to B. Check out the laserdisc archive and look for models around the times of 1994-1998 www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/pioneer1.htm

Laserdisc was "before my time", so I never got to see footage from it. Does anyone have a link with comparison shots between a scene on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD? I was especially wondering how it compares to DVD, since it became the more widely used medium, but LD is much bigger, which makes me think it has better picture quality?
I'd say just download a torrent of Star Wars on Laserdisc. It's easy to find on any other format to compare, plus there are plenty of torrents for Laserdisc Star Wars because it has the appeal of being the closest thing to the unaltered movie in DVD quality. And from what I've seen, laserdisc is like a low-quality DVD from the '90s (Which is understandable) and with oddly "tinny" sound.
Kevin Striker I've never had problems with the SW LaserDiscs sounding tiny. The original trilogy have great PCM matrix surround tracks. Did you actually watch them on LD or transfers of them on DVD?

1:13:27 WOOOOOO Ordered my region free Blu-ray from Germany, can't wait. This movie kicks ass. But as is the case with many other movies, including the Death Wish films, Silence of The Lambs, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, etc., Split Second was actually filmed in 1.33:1 (Full Frame). Meaning, when you see the 16:9 version on Blu-ray or thread it through a cinema projector, you're actually seeing less of the picture. +nwlman It varies widely, but it's difficult to say for sure, since DVD uses digital video and LaserDisc (against all logic) is analog video (which continues to blow my mind). Sound is definitely better on LaserDisc, as many can since it's all analog and hasn't been compressed to digital form like DVD. Vinyl enthusiasts can attest to this, since many say vinyl has a "warmer sound" than CD. But usually if a DVD is sourced from a LaserDisc, if done without care it's going to look pretty bad, because you're compressing an analog image to digital, with pixels and what not. DVDs from the nineties are a GREAT example. (Lookin' at you, Blade Runner...)
Hi thought liked this video before but liked it again lol but only own few of these even tho never own the player but still bought few movies just for my collection that is Robocop 1 & 2 Predator 1&2 first Die Hard,Ghostbusters 1 & 2 then Terminator 1 & 2 oh last one is Gremlins but dont have pt 2.
I'd say The Rock was an decent Michael Bay film. I wasn't overly fussed about Bad Boys, I handn't back then the common sense to properly know or understand that he was In actual fact a terrible director. I'm now a more aware. Falling Down is a fantastic movie one of my faves. It was released in a period when I got my first pay cheques & started buying VHS' along with Under Siege, The Fugitive, Nowhere To Run, Demolition Man, Cliffhanger, Speed, Mrs Doubtfire & a personal fave that gets panned Last Action Hero. Can't believe you have The Man Who Knew Too Little, its impossible to find on R2 DVD I had to buy it on R1 & is a great film that has kind of fallen into a hole.

The advantage of the CAV format is not only the freeze-frame feature, but the picture quality in general is a bit better than CLV.

Fortress was cut for the US,the UK version on VHS and Laserdisc is uncut,Delta Force 2 was cut the UK the Laserdisc is uncut

My dad has some sort of laser disc, you have to load the 'cassette' containing the disc into the machine. It then ejects the plastic cassette.... Ever heard of it Oliver Harper ?
hey there bud, yes those types of discs are called CED. Instead of being read by a laser the player uses a needle very much like a vinyl player. If you take the disc out of the cassette ( caddy ) they look a lot like vinyl. That format didn't last long due to manufacturing defeats on many releases and varying picture quality.

Hey! I don't know how familiar you are with the Mortal Kombat Laserdisc, but there is lines in the movie that were in the theater that weren't on the DVD or Blu Ray. For example theres the scene with Lui Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya earlier in the film where they see Katana and Johnny says "When a girl looks at you like that, it usually means something." Then in the theater Sonya says "It means she's a bimbo." But in all of the home releases they cut out the bimbo line. Is that line in the Laserdisc??

Oliver, have you seen Close Encounters on the big screen? I first saw it on video in high school and felt kind of like yourself; I saw it at the cinema in 2004, and it was honestly one of the best film going experiences of my life. Totally different experience. I saw it again this past summer for the 40thth anniversary and relished it. Definitely check out the Criterion laserdisc if u can.

Those big sleeves! I'd like to collect Laserdiscs. I've taken a look at a few and the transfers, particularly on late LD releases, look a lot like early dvd transfers, can you confirm this?
Anyway I don't have a problem with this- as much as I love my Blurays I have a soft-spot regarding crappy picture quality. Even VHS noise and pops...I guess it's the authenticity and nostalgia factor. And because I'm weird.

Hi oliver. I'm looking to get into the laserdisc format and I was wondering if you could advise a good player I could buy? Some features I would like are- NTSC/pal, auto flip, multi disc changer, best possible picture quality, all the necessary outputs for 5.1 surround sound and as many video output options as possible ie. Scart, composite, s-video etc. I know its probably not possible to find all of these features in one LD player but if you know of a player that covers as many of these as possible I'd really appreciate a recommendation from you. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work on TH-cam!
If you want a player that plays NTSC/PAL I would recommend picking up the Pioneer CLD 515 and CLD 925 or you could buy the Denon LA 2300 model. Those all have auto flip, AC3 and the required outputs for sound and picture. Those are midrange players if you're on a tight budget and is a good start off point.

Oliver Harper do you have the american halloween 4 and 5 laserdiscs they have the original theatrical ultra stereo audio tracks but i can't find them anywhere.
Is there any technical reason that some Laser discs have stronger audio than Blu ray, considering blu ray can also have Lossless/uncompressed audio ?

GRUSS Newton oh good!. Well I just checked eBay and there is player on the there with the model no. HF7G. Its a Japanese model so you will need a stepdown converter. Its NTSC only. But it has all the right outputs for picture and sound. Avoid any of the DVL models which have a DVD player built in. The DVD playback will be awful by todays standards and the LD picture is the equivalent of a mid range player. If you don't want to fork out about £200 Id suggest getting hold of the Pioneer CLD925 model which was the last UK dedicated LD player. Always stick with Pioneer when it comes to LaserDisc.

Are you sure about True lies being Pan & Scan? James Cameron shoots in Super 35, which is quite the opposite of Pan & Scan: The 4:3 version should show MORE than the widescreen version.
My copy is in widescreen but there was a Pan and Scan (4:3) release www.lddb.com/laserdisc/06208/8640-80/True-Lies-(1994) I discuss Super 35 when I show the Mission Impossible LD.
I remember Millenium being a big deal when it was released. Of course it was eventually shown to be a huge dud, but it wasn't obscure at all during release year.

Afternoon Mike, my collection since doing this video hasn't increased that much. I've given away some titles and purchased a few more. Im very picky on what I buy on LaserDisc now as I don't really have much space for more titles but im always on the look out for interesting films that I may have missed.
The Fog is on Bluray here in North America in a deluxe edition from ScreamFactory and it is brilliant!

If you check online there are some regular bluray players that only require a update with region free firmware. I put region free firmware on my Toshiba previously locked to region A player because I imported Arrow Film's release of the 'Burbs on bluray. Works like a charm.

the first and only time i saw a movie on lazer Disc was Bran Stoker Dracula from 92 back in the late 90s i was about 5 years old then i forgot about it then i got interested in this format if i were ever get one i would get john woos the killer and put it on my wall . i did buy my history teacher a lazer disc of the mask for 15 dollars

LaserDisc is only NTSC and PAL there is no region coding. Its analogue based. I'd suggest getting a dedicated NTSC player with the change over option for Side A to B. Check out the laserdisc archive and look for models around the times of 1994-1998 www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/pioneer1.htm

Laserdisc was "before my time", so I never got to see footage from it. Does anyone have a link with comparison shots between a scene on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD?
I was especially wondering how it compares to DVD, since it became the more widely used medium, but LD is much bigger, which makes me think it has better picture quality?
All comparisons of laser disk and dvd are rubbish because they use camera to get the laser disk footage
I'd say just download a torrent of Star Wars on Laserdisc. It's easy to find on any other format to compare, plus there are plenty of torrents for Laserdisc Star Wars because it has the appeal of being the closest thing to the unaltered movie in DVD quality.
And from what I've seen, laserdisc is like a low-quality DVD from the '90s (Which is understandable) and with oddly "tinny" sound.
Kevin Striker LaserDisc audio I've found to be far superior DVD. Far Less compression. Picture wise its not.

Kevin Striker I've never had problems with the SW LaserDiscs sounding tiny. The original trilogy have great PCM matrix surround tracks. Did you actually watch them on LD or transfers of them on DVD?

Ordered my region free Blu-ray from Germany, can't wait. This movie kicks ass.
But as is the case with many other movies, including the Death Wish films, Silence of The Lambs, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, etc., Split Second was actually filmed in 1.33:1 (Full Frame). Meaning, when you see the 16:9 version on Blu-ray or thread it through a cinema projector, you're actually seeing less of the picture.

You can connect with composite or s-video. Its best to use a player injunction with a video scaler to get the best results.

It varies widely, but it's difficult to say for sure, since DVD uses digital video and LaserDisc (against all logic) is analog video (which continues to blow my mind).
Sound is definitely better on LaserDisc, as many can since it's all analog and hasn't been compressed to digital form like DVD. Vinyl enthusiasts can attest to this, since many say vinyl has a "warmer sound" than CD.
But usually if a DVD is sourced from a LaserDisc, if done without care it's going to look pretty bad, because you're compressing an analog image to digital, with pixels and what not. DVDs from the nineties are a GREAT example. (Lookin' at you, Blade Runner...)

Hi thought liked this video before but liked it again lol but only own few of these even tho never own the player but still bought few movies just for my collection that is Robocop 1 & 2 Predator 1&2 first Die Hard,Ghostbusters 1 & 2 then Terminator 1 & 2 oh last one is Gremlins but dont have pt 2.
I'd say The Rock was an decent Michael Bay film. I wasn't overly fussed about Bad Boys, I handn't back then the common sense to properly know or understand that he was In actual fact a terrible director. I'm now a more aware. Falling Down is a fantastic movie one of my faves. It was released in a period when I got my first pay cheques & started buying VHS' along with Under Siege, The Fugitive, Nowhere To Run, Demolition Man, Cliffhanger, Speed, Mrs Doubtfire & a personal fave that gets panned Last Action Hero. Can't believe you have The Man Who Knew Too Little, its impossible to find on R2 DVD I had to buy it on R1 & is a great film that has kind of fallen into a hole.

no NTSC ones are just as common as PAL releases. There was also more pressed as well. PAL was a small market compared to NTSC.
