Yeah that and -1/-1 counters are the bane of Skullbriar. Way back then Black Sun's Zenith was much more popular as a go-to Black board wipe which made the meta very unfriendly for Skullbriar.
@@LegendLeaguer Nice! They can dump the counters on any other target creature to get out from under the Coin counter, but that's still pretty effective as you've cost them all their prior work.

@@erfunk no, the thing is once the creature with the coin counter dies or is exiled, Athreos will give me control of it, and then the coin counter goes on the ozolith. All the counters including the coin counter have to go on the creature you target so you either don't use it or I'll eventually get *that* creature too. It might be relevant that the deck i was playing against was a Marchesa of the Black Rose +1/+1 counter steal-deck
Skullbriar was my first commander, so this is pretty exciting! A card I wasn't surprised to see missing, but highly recommend you add to any Skullbriar deck, is Essence Harvest. Skullbriar struggles against decks that can block and/or stop you from beating them in the face, and Essence Harvest is the perfect answer to them by bypassing the need for combat entirely and just draining their life total directly. Plus, it doubles as a nice source of life gain if you're ever running low. Best of all, it costs like $0.25
Skullbriar was also the first commander I picked up a single for, and for the same reasons! I want to try Skullbriar in a Kathril deck first because of the synergy, but even the $50 list here makes me want to dig through my collection and give it a spin.

I'd love to see your take on Exile tribal. Currently running Jeleva as it's the commander with the most usability of the exile mechanic, with the secret commander being Oblivion Sower (one of my favourite cards in all of magic). But there are many different commanders you could use so I'd love to see your take.
Forgotten and unpopular but good commanders from the past 24 months. There have been so many, but a lot of people have forgotten them due to their being just many new and popular commanders.
You should really include some sacrifice outlets, because the biggest weakness of this deck is a simple unsummon. If there is a blue deck in your group, you know they will at least have a cyclonic rift, and that card will singlehandedly ruin your day
You just choose to put Skullbriar back into your command zone instead as a replacement effect so it won't lose its counters. Here's the full rules: "If a commander would be put into its owner’s hand or library from anywhere, its owner may put it into the command zone instead. This replacement effect may apply more than once to the same event."

How do you feel about Mausoleum Secrets in a deck like this? I find it to be a good budget tutor, as it can typically find 1-3 mana answers quite easily even in non-graveyard decks. In more graveyard based strategies, it is often a $1 demonic tutor.
I've titled my skullbriar edh deck "Bogle Factory" homage to my first modern deck, bogles. With the abilith counters that's what i feel like I'm doing. Especially with bogbonder

I'm noticing that you don't run artifacts, enchantments or blockers. I reccomend Bane of Progress along with cards like eternal witness, entomber exarch, Genesis or gravedigger. Being able to recast your 2 cmc commander by paying the commander tax is one thing, but being able to recast it by paying it's cmc is far more potent in the long term. You also might want to consider Renatta, path of discovery or (eventually) mighty emergence to place an extra 2 1/1 counters on your commander every time it is cast.
Thought of a weird hard counter to skullbriar, if an opponent can get enough - 1/-1 counters on them so he dies then it will be a hard time getting back into play without dying as a state based action
If the game gows long enough, it could eventually recover with Opal Palace, getting a +1/+1 counter for each time you cast it from the command zone. But yeah, if you get hit by a Black Sun's Zenith before you get to build up the Skullbriar, you are pretty much out of the game.
As someone who loves playing The Ozolith any chance he gets, how exactly does this work with skullbriar? Normally you move the counters from the creature onto the ozolith, but briar states that counters remain on it as it moves to other zones. Do you copy the counters, or do you transfer them over and skullbriar loses them?
It's a weird rules thing but here's the Gatherer explanation: "The Ozolith’s first ability doesn’t move counters off the creature that’s left the battlefield. Instead, it causes you to put a number of counters of each kind of counter that was on that creature onto The Ozolith. Notably, if you somehow control a second The Ozolith, each one will receive the same number and kinds of counters that were on the creature that left the battlefield. Similarly, if the creature has an ability that triggers when it leaves the battlefield that refers to the number of counters it had, that ability will use the number of counters that were on the permanent, even if The Ozolith’s first ability resolves first."
Skullbriar land destruction/hand disruption is sooo cheap and totally decent. Well, in 1v1 anyway lol. I don't fuck with adding counters though, he's just a good clock in the right colors.
i play athreos, shroud veiled, so if it died, would the coin counter stay on it? cause that's really funny. ( i wouldn't get it either way bc commander goes to command zone) but it'd be really funny.

Tempted to make Skullbriar a sleeper commander in the deck with lots of recursion, as while he's in the graveyard with the ability counters, Kathril can copy them.

Victor Bourguignon I asked MaRo (then Eli Shiffrin, when MaRo forgot what Skullbriar did) about this on Kathril’s release. Skullbriar will have any abilities granted by its counters, regardless of zone, so Kathril (and any similar effect) will recognize if it has trample/deathtouch/etc

The difference is you don’t have to recast either One With Nature or the creature it’s attached to in order to grab a land, and you don’t need to be behind for it to work. Every time Cartographer’s Hawk connects you need to spend mana to recast it and have it survive a full round of turns in order for it to *maybe* ramp you for 1 if you’ve already been missing land drops.
I saw the list for the $200, and i have most likely f the non-land expensive cards, i open JumpStart and just happen to have the rest from past endeavors...

I used to run Skullbriar as a mass removal tribal. But right after Ikoria came out I changed it to Voltron counters on Skullbriar thing.

Why not Ring of Kalonia? It gives trample as well as counters.

yes the counter would stay on it, and if somehow you play abzan and have athreos and skullbri together, skullbri will come back on and on and on.
