    Maybe I should do a Spanish or bilingual anti-MLM channel 🤔.

    I’ve been thinking for a while about starting to make some anti-mlm content in Polish and this is the last push i needed! (Not a sign from God though, i’m saving the expression for when the huns start calling).
    Also, i definitely agree with my German neighbor, mlms are much less prevalent in Europe than in US, I personally don’t know anyone involved nor was i ever contacted by a polish speaking rep (i used to have a bilingual ig, so i’ve gotten some english pitches, tho). On the flip side, that means no one knows how bad these companies are NOR THAT THEY ARE MLMS. Like, Avon has a retail side and it’s a company that is often spoken about in beauty content. Personally, when i’ve gotten into antimlm like 3 years ago (my introduction to the genre was iiluminaughtii), i discovered i had an avon, a mary kay and an oriflame product in my house. Still no idea how my parents got most of them.

      Yes exactly! I found out two years ago that fitline was an mlm company! They sell supplements but because of the troubles a sporting association in Finland has had monetarily, they accepted fitline as a sponsor and many people thought it was legit. Until like two years ago when a finnish reality tv star started talking about them and their outrageous huns.
      but because mlms are not as common in finland, I never even considered that it could’ve been so horrible

      iiluminaughtii is bringing in everyone who doesn't have as much personal mlm experience so we wouldn't seek it out, but her other content bring us in and grabs us

      Yeah! We (Czech Republic) have Avon and Oriflame sold regularly in the shops as common products, and door-to-door selling is more or less illegal (and let's be honest, online selling is still not a good option if you want to reach the older people here), so people here don't know they're MLMs or what these even are. Avon has recently started to promote the business side here on youtube, but it's not really a thing that has spread at all, and the ads dissapeared eventually.

    Hot take: MLMs are more prevalent in America because the US lacks many of the basic social safety nets that every other developed nation has. See affordable and accessible healthcare, free or low cost college tuition, reasonable sick and maternity/paternity leave, a healthier work/life balance IN GENERAL. In Germany, companies are legally required to give 4 weeks (20 days) paid vacation for all full time employees. Americans are excited to get 10 days PTO, and you often won't get that until you have worked at a company for at least a year. Too many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and when you're desperate you're easier to take advantage of.

    My wife and I discovered the world of anti-MLM after she bought her wedding dress at David's Bridal and they gave her info to a Mary Kay hun. Channels like this that knock the scammers down a peg or two bring us endless joy!

    • @HannahAlonzo
      @HannahAlonzo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      No way! That’s insane, I can’t believe David’s Bridal did that! Mary Kay reps are relentless when it comes to trying to sell products…

    • @NickM-jv8zk
      @NickM-jv8zk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      People have posted online that M.K. reps can pay them for leads, but we have not seen anything official to confirm that. So disgusting. People need to be aware of that. Ladies are looking for the perfect dress for their wedding, only to be told by their dress saleswoman that they have received a "free pampering session to get you ready for your special day!". Then a rep calls to schedule it, and you find out it's not exactly a "pampering session" so much as someone giving you makeup samples to put on yourself because they are not allowed to apply products on you. So you will be "pampered" by allowing you to put makeup on yourself and get hammered with a high pressure pitch. Yuck! My wife doesn't do makeup, so she basically told them to get lost 🤣

    • @sierrasnode
      @sierrasnode 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Damsel in Defense is actually super problematic beyond just being an MLM (dangerous electronic work on stun guns, also shilling overpriced supplements with mystery ingredients, specifically targeting victims of assault, etc.). Illuminaughtii did a great piece on it a year or so ago. Stuff looks like cute versions of normal self defence kit, but it's twice the price and not even half the quality, and 'pink taxing' assault victims is a special kind of low.

    I'm German as well and the only experience I've had over here with MLMs is Tupperware, which is a very big thing here but a lot of people just buy it for its 100 year guarantee and don't join anything. There's even this joke where Germans say that your mother will forgive you everything unless your forget to give her back her Tupperware. However, it must be said that nowadays Tupperware doesn't necessarily mean the company anymore and just wares that are of the same consistency :)

    Pro tip for everyone from a cook and a former cutco rep: if you are being pitched cutco by someone you don't want to say no to, the only things they sell even close to what they're being sold for are the table knives (better at cutting meat than most steak knives I've used at fancy restaurants and won't damage your plates either, still using daily a decade later), the kitchen shears (way better and easier to clean than any other shears I've had, also use daily ten years later) and the spreader/spatula thing (use every time I make a sandwich or serve something like a lasagna).
    My parents bought an entire block from me for like $250 to support me right out of high school, and they handed it all to me when I moved out, and I only use those anymore.
    Everything else is pretty pointless and you can get better for cheaper somewhere else, but those 3 are at least unique to cutco and very good at what they're made for, more so than other knives/shears

    We don't *have* to give compliments, but we do because it's the truth. Your voice is important in the antiMLM world, and the ripple effect of what you do matters. We need to have a bouquet of creators, because people will no doubt find one person who really speaks to them and their experience. One thing I've learned in the professional world is that sometimes the most important thing we bring to our practice is *who* we are, not simply what we know. Of course I'm here to giggle along at the strange and the silly, but in the end I appreciate you, and how you see the people behind the scheme, and that's who matters, and who we all want to help. My less dignified and poetic self also wants to say this: NORWEX SUCKS. Salmonella is real, y'all!

  • @MiddayLady
    @MiddayLady 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    "It's almost as if common courtesy, common boundaries don't apply to [MLM reps]" it's not almost it, that's literary it. Their main tactics revolve around breaking the social contract but riding on the fact that the victim is not going to break it themselves.
    It's pretty awful but also kinda brilliant, in an Evil sort of way? People will feel super uncomfortable, bc the rep broke all the social standards by guilting them, asking invasive questions or being uber pushy, but them themselves cannon force a 'leave me alone!' or 'you are out of line' not to make a scene. Except the rep is ALREADY making a scene, already breaking all the norms. So let's just break them too and say 'leave this woman alone' instead of buying 90$ worth of useless product. We just need to remember they already broke the common boundaries. If we try to make them 'save face' or be really nice, bc we don't want to seem rude, we are walking into the trap. They are already rude.
    As long, as the victim is bound by social norms that the predator already broke, the predator has the upper hand.

    Lia Sophia was an MLM that had to shut down. It was the first MLM I was introduced to about 14yrs ago after having my oldest son. Yep- I joined. Didn’t ever get anyone under me but did have some parties - pre crazy online social media hun post days. My experience isn’t horrifying but Lia Sophia may be one you want to look into b/c I know there were some lawsuits against them & people burned in the process of their abrupt shut down.

    I hated the day I found out norwex was an mlm. I have a few cloths from my mom, regular cleaning cloth and glass cloth, and while I don't trust them to remove germs, they are the best quality cleaning cloths I've ever had. I am on the hunt for some of similar quality so I don't feel like I am supporting an mlm, but I've yet to find something that compares. The glass one cleans with just water and I haven't had to buy glass cleaner in a long time.

    I know that in France it would be really hard to establish a true MLM, though some might exist. French corporate law prohibits most every tactic used by MLMs. And I just think with how onerous self-employment is in France, MLM structures aren’t very attractive as “side gigs” even if they were allowed to operate.
    Germany, Switzerland and Austria have a bit looser corporate legal codes and would only prohibit such companies if most or all of one’s income is generated via recruitment. I’ve heard too that what’s common in the German-speaking world is for MLMs to skirt regulation by charging “newsletter fees” rather than membership fees or the like.

I found you because I saw a vid and it was all like “Tired of working 9-5 and want to be your own boss drop a heart” so I did and of course it turned out to be an MLM. At first I wasn’t sure so I googled it (it’s called Purium) and sure enough it is and then I was like god show me if I should even waste my time then I go onto TH-cam this morning and see MLM horror stories. I wasn’t planning on joining cuz it doesn’t sound like a good deal in the first place but your videos really solidified the yeah hell no I’m not. Plus when I looked it up they used to have lead in their drinks and they don’t answer costumer complaints and I’m like yeah no def don’t wanna be a part of that. No matter what kind of situation they got themselves stuck in, it doesn’t justify the bullying and shaming and trying to ‘force’ people to host a party as if it’s someone’s ‘responsibility’ to open their home and host a party just because they got a little slip of paper saying that was their ‘prize.’ What a load of bullshit.

I know we had other foods that we cut but it was a while ago. I will say the knives are good but it’s still a mlm and they tricked us into thinking we were working for a legitimate company, so in a way it was worse. And yes all of us were Highschool students.

    I have to say, I do love my Norwex products, especially the glasses cleaning cloths and the laundry detergent. And I'm lucky, the rep I bought through is way less pushy than she could be, and did a lot of actually no-strings-attached giveaways, so a lot of the product I have was free. She has also never tried to recruit me. The version of the raw chicken demos I have seen used these bacteria test kits. They would use one on the plate or cutting board the chicken had been on, then again after using the cloth, and you could see that the kits were first positive and then negative. It was really interesting. I find that they work well and I'm happy with what I have, and also very grateful that she hasn't been pushy since I have stopped buying, since I have everything I need.
    I had a Damsel in Defense taser, and wish I knew what I had done with it. Maybe I'll find it when I move. What I love is that it has this wristband (and you can get one that is all blinged out, lol) that plugs into the unit and completes the electrical circuit. It won't work with that unplugged, so if your assailant is able to get it out of your hand, it will come unplugged and then they cannot use it against you. That is a safety feature I really love. I'd actually like to get another one if mine doesn't turn up in the move. And as I recall, the friend who bought it for me also got a free pepper spray with the purchase. I do think I know where that is.

    I know this is an older video but your first story regarding the German person and their statement that MLMs seem less common in Germany made me think.
    I almost wonder if there is a connection with other countries' social programs and labor laws (as in actually having them) and how uncommon MLMs are for them.
    Its just that my personal experience centered around my inability to afford to live and it being preyed upon. It sounds like a lot of people who are struggling financially are preyed upon and since there are really no helpful programs from the government (there are some programs but the income threshold is often very low and just because you make more than that doesn't mean you can afford to live in your city/state).

My parents bought some 20 years ago, along with the pair of scissors that cut a penny, and the knives haven't dulled and have never been sharpened. I wish they didn't have such a terrible business model. They would probably actually sell a lot more knives if they just sold them in stores and dropped the MLM bit.

    Regarding the first story, I feel that mlms have been way more prevalent in Germany in the 80ies and 90ies. I remember my mom hosting several Tupperware, PartyLite, Pierre Lang (jewelry) parties and we owned a kirby vacuum (Vorwerk). I'm not sure, if those gatherings are still a thing, but I remeber them being part of my childhood rather regularly. Also, not sure, if Kirby is still operating door-to-door sales, in Italy I remeber having seen storefronts in malls several times, but I cannor recall ever having seen one in Germany (nor ever being approached by a sales rep, and I'm 40+ yo now).
    But in general, I feel like (obviously cannot tell for sure, since that's not my bubble, though I have to admit PartyLite candles smelled really nice😅) mlms are far less relevant now over here than in the States, agreed. Although I never felt like any mlm rep ever tried pushing my mother or other guests into sales. Which is probably the reason the system failed over here😂😂😂

    On the note of the last story, it's not just Miss Rodeo America - Senegrace (Lipsense) sponsors the Miss USA pageant as well with the same vibe of contractual obligations to promote it of all of the contestants including the teen, and junior teen versions, which means that there are 13 to 19 year olds who are being contractually obligated to promote an MLM product that's known to damage your lips. In the case of Miss USA pageants, it is sponsored by the actual MLM themselves, not an individual rep, with it being publicised to the hills and back, but if it wasn't that way for the pageant in the story it is likely to be an individual rep who has dropped the money which big yikes.
