Please remember that not all of this is 'about the money.'

It’s been a thing for pretty much as long as the Internet has been a thing and even before that (an easy example is tabloids in magazines) it’s just that it’s on such a large scale now and very mainstream. We scoff at how older people can't tell they are being scammed by emails and callers. But younger people are definitely unable to tell which content is real and which is fake. We automatically believe anything on social media, and think we could never fall for it. But with rage bait, clickbait, AI, etc. It's clear we can't tell the difference.

I think the problem is that there are still children, and individuals, who aren't able to distinguish rage-bait, and the algorithm feeds off of their ignorance. A massive hoard of 5-18 year old might not understand the consequences of interacting with a rage-bait video. It gets passed around and the video shoots up. Unless there's some way to filter the videos from ignorant viewers there's no way to stop it from being profitable. Heck, half the time the video isn't obviously rage bait until partway through and a person might watch it and think "What did I just watch?" too late.
So, basically, it's awesome that you found a way to protect yourself, but it's not really an effective strategy for combating the rage-farmers. :(

It's the same with restaurants. People don't feel inclined to leave a review if they have a positive experience since that is what they expected/they don't have the time to be bothered. However a negative experience immediately warrants the effort of leaving a complaint/review. Which is probably why a lot of restaurants have to actively ask for reviews after each table.

Almost a decade ago, a friend who is in tech, explained to me how engagement works. Since then, I've been very selective about how I engage with the internet, especially social media platforms. I used to warm people to be careful about what they "liked", and everyone told me I was a reactionary. It's funny how many times I've been called that, and it turned out to be true. Those of us who are more sensitive, through nature or trauma, are canaries in the coalmine for these things, and I've learned to trust my instincts.

    • @nothisispatrick2615

Exactly. When I was on tiktok, (not anymore), my for you page slowly turned into a “please like and share this video so we can afford healthcare treatment” page. I’d like the videos because I wanted to support them but when it became literally ALL the videos on my for you page, it got way too depressing and I had to stop liking. Essentially ignoring people who needed help and liking the “fun” videos instead.
It’s so evil how platforms like this prey on your empathy either intentionally or unintentionally and then expect you to stay on the app and just get desensitized to scary, depressing, and rage inducing things. Also with fear mongering content. Your paranoia fills their pockets. It’s so dangerous.

"Please engage in the comments" in their videos and also noticing people saying "oh viewers are picking on me because they think I'm ugly"or "they don't like my current content so I'm going to change it". But what they really seem to want is for us to comment and go, " No, you're doing the right thing, we love you" so rage baiting doesn't even have to be as obvious as what you showed. side note on the food "rage bait" videos. A friend of mine told me that most of those are actually kink content. Anytime someone is rubbing stuff on the counter, playing with the food in their hands, or multiple shots of inserting one food into another. It’s really sickening and people hit like on those too!
