1. Don't sleep on a painful hip, you can use a pillow to avoid putting pressure on it, either between legs or at your back. 2. Distribute your weight evenly when standing, avoid holding heavy weights against one hip for prolonged periods. If standing for a long time, use cushioned inserts or march in place. 3.avoid sitting for long periods or crouching. If driving long distances, try to stop occasionally for a walk. 4. When walking, avoid striking ground with your heel first. Shorten your stride and hit floor with the flat of your foot instead. 5. If your hip pain flares up, use a cane. Hold the cane in hand opposite to painful hip. Avoid stairs and hill climbing during flare ups. 'Treat your own hip' by Robert McKenzie (book recommendation) You're welcome 🤗

For me, it’s my structure- the way I am made- but I did find relief. I taught myself to sleep on my back, with support under my knees and no pillow. I am pain free for the last 5 years.
I've been having hip pain and lower back pain for a while now and you're right. I tend to sleep on the painful side every night and awake several times to change positions. yes the pillow honestly works wonders. i had to do that when my hip was throbbing and the pain went down my leg and i couldn't sleep. 3 days of using a pillow and my hip feels alot better
I completely agree with the fourth suggestion to never sit with the knee is higher than the hip, especially when the person has osteoarthritis of the hip, for when the knee is higher than the hip, the femoral head can then impinge against the side of the socket.
I have developed GTPS over the past year. Despite cortisone injections and physio, it's worse than ever. I have frequently told health professionals that I relieve the pain by lying on the affected hip. Having viewed this video I will now try to stop doing that, as well as use a correct sitting posture (knees lower than hips) and see how that goes! Thank you very much for this informative video.

Could you please please give me some stretches or simple exercises for chronic sciatic pain? I have had 2 failed surgeries. The last surgery they fused the L4-L5. Pain came back 3 months after surgery. Pain was from the middle of my right buttuck right down the outside of the leg right to my toes and top of my foot, about 6 months ago I started going to a Chinese Acupuncture and the pain has left my leg, but pain is still in my buttocks. If I walk to much or be busy during the day, the pain will come back in my leg, but after two days off doing nothing, it will go away, but the pain in my butt, stays 24-7 on morphine slow release twice a day plus pain pills when I need them, I had been sent to a physiotherapist once but they couldn’t do anything for me, because my pain level was too high. I go once a month for acupuncture and it is what keeps me going, because before I found Chinese acupuncture I was in bed up too 16 hours a day in bed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thank you. Sorry I wrote so much but I have a lot off things wrong with this sciatic. And I’ve had this for 10 years now and took me 4 years too get a doctor to believe me
I do everything you talked about I this video. My low back, both hips and both knees kill me all night long. I toss and turn and adjust that pillow between my knees. I had the McKenzie treat you back book. It was awesome and helped a lot. I am going to buy the hip one. Didn’t know it existed. Thanks. I really need help.
Definitely give this a try, I do sleep on my side (have done since childhood) and I tend to lean on my right leg, carried my children on my hip and also my grandchildren so that probably didn't help at all either! Throw in hypermobility and it's not a surprise really my joints ache!

I have hip bursitis in both hips. Hard to sleep at night as I am side sleeper. Using a type of wedge under legs and towards hip to lean on. Helps part of the night. But once I wake up, hard to get comfortable and back to sleep
These guys have helped me out countless time. With this one the sleeping on the hip, sitting too long, and sitting with knees above the hips was spot on.
It ended up being hip arthritis. Go to an orthopedic to get an exray. I spent a fortune on physical therapy. It wasn't helping and I just decided to go on my own. I need a hip joint replacement. No doctor ever even suggested that that could be the problem and I needed to get it checked. I spent 7 years going from doctors, pain management, chiropractors, 1,000's on PT.
Great advice about sitting with knees below your hips & not walking heel to toe. What exercises can you recommend, do you have a exercise for hip video? Thanks
I am short and notice my feet don’t touch the ground on most chairs…..so I cross my legs instead of dangle them. I’m looking for a chair that fits my stature! My PT told me not to cross my legs and that has helped.
You may laugh about your sphere of influence, but I've got to tell you- I have seriously curtailed my constant pain situation from FM with your video knowledge! Thank you more than words can express!

i have bad left hip pain. i'm 30 and had 4 kids. i hold my son often on the right side. My right side is fine. it's always my left that hurts and throbs and the pain goes down my leg. i have done pt before but they did it on my rt hip because they saw my rt hip would over extend. my left hip also pops all the time, even while walking. i'm not sure why it always pops. i came here to help resolve my pain. few things i have done have helped with the pain. So i thank y'all for that.
Big thank you!! New hip pain last few nights. (Sleepless more or less last night). Your tips re cause and solution are just what I need to look and explore. Thank you Bob and Brad 🤗
My hip was killing me. It was so bad it was hard to sit on my couch for very long. Turned out, you guessed it, my hips were way lower than my knees. I found a set of plastic risers on Amazon for $9. I hoped that would help. Did it ever. No more hip pain when sitting on the couch. Such a simple inexpensive solution. Thanks for sharing information on what can cause pain.
Another great video guys, I'm suffering from all kinds of back problems, all stemming from my botched surgery on L4/L5. Now I get a giant invisible hand squeezing both butts, pain down both thighs down to my ankle and toes. My genital region Is totally without any senses. If I shoot water at that region during a shower, it's like an empty hole, I don't feel it at all. Your exercises are a big help to me, thanks,
I just turned 30 but with all the working from home, I have been a frequent visitor to this channel with my shoulder, back and now hip pain haha, thank you Bod and Brad~ (my youtube recommendation be like - how to do makeup and how to ease back pain 🤣)
Right we (nurses) do position people off bony prominences. I sleep on my right side because my left hip hurts "some" cant stay on left much . Lay on back ok at times. Marching in place, around house gets me off couch; funny I am compelled to do this; it feels good to circulate legs and hips. Bike rides daytime. I have impingement in shoulders. Using bands. Yoga. And physical therapy exercises to keep myself in general functional. Thanks you two are so helpful.
Bob & Brad: I can't find the book "The McKenzie Method for Treating Hip Pain". BoB & Brad, can you tell me who the publisher is? Thank you very much Bob & Brad!
Yes, kind of like you. You are the best in my opinion too.. I was just walking around the dog park and didn’t get that the long stride I was taking was causing pain. Thank you
Knees above the hip when sitting is a massive thing for me. Instant difference when i level it out. I used to do everything mentioned here. It's so obvious looking back now...
I´ll do my best and always find your advice helpful. I live in a very steep area, actually the crater of an ancient volcano, so do have to walk up and down hill often. I need to find a balance between getting enough exercise and not doing any harm to my hips. Any suggestions?
Absolutely the driving is a constant problem for the sciatic pain I have been fighting for over a year. I am fighting a bulging disk down low that has me in constant left hip pain and some days of lower back pain. Please continue to being information to help us help ourselves.
3 or 4 of the things I definitely needed to stop. I have had leg pain for about 6 months now and I tried some of the ideas you presented here. Shorten strides, putting more weight on one hip or leg, and not laying on the hip bone in bed. I also decided to try wearing my support hose on the painful leg and that helps when I wear them all day.
I love the positive exercise. my hip pain came from torn ligaments in my foot that my now fired doctor refused to look at for 4 years. I ( my body) adjusted walking, standing etc to accommodate the pain. 4 years down the road I'm facing major surgery on both feet. nice he? doctor in Hinton AB Canada. they're everywhere
Wow... I have sat in my desk chair at work with my knees up both or just the one... and type around or over the knees. I am so glad I found your video.
This confirms what I’ve been doing you can get a little heart shaped pillow that is great, cushioned insert. Also I wear Birkenstocks sandals the soft red ones take so much pressure off, yoga mats in the hall and kitchen sound great for my hard wood floors, thanks for the great suggestions. Get MOUNTAIN STICKS especially if you have osteoarthritis. Thanks guys ❤❤❤❤❤

And I’ve had this for 10 years now and took me 4 years too get a doctor to believe me
Thank you for the very informative video! Many of these habits I have. Big help my Dr. has never addressed.
All your posts are so helpful. Thanks so much.
Thank you for the suggestions! I have severe hip pain. The pillow suggestions sounds helpful!
Thank you so much for these tips. I have the worse hip sciatica pain I ever could imagine I hope this will help me, cuz my tears are never ending
Wanda, look for a Chiropracter who does Active Release Therapy or ART. It really works.
Wanda have you had epidurals for your pain ?
I find that hiking poles really help if you like to take walks or hike! Icing the hip helps too!
You did it again for me.l watched you today and low and behold you showed the hip pain video.this morning l could hardly walk l did some exercise then l did what you show us and l am OKAY.
DELIGHTFUL SUCESS.
THANK YOU BOTH.
Valuable information -- for free. Thank you Bob and Brad.
Thank you for the soldier comment ‼️I was in the USAF and was trained to march by striking the heel. Learning to walk with a flatter stride and listening to you both 🔥💯 Grateful for your tips and channel ‼️
Yes! UAN vet here! I caught on to the marching. Gonna be hard to change my step stride!
Thanks so much, guys. This is very helpful. Brad, you have done such hard work to get your speech clarity back. Congratulations!

Good advice, matter of fact excellent advice, and advice I will follow until the end of my journey.
Thank you Bob & Brad! I have a nasty right hip that is always sore, which means for me very tight glutes, hammies, quads...you get the picture. I want to apply these suggestions and find the right exercises that will help improve my health. You both are doing great work helping people with their health.
Thanks guys, i have sleep apnea and have slept on my sides for years, and now have hip pain due to sleeping on my sides all the time - im gonna give it a shot to slightly rolling back onto my glutes a lil' more . . ...
I don't know about being the most famous PTs on the internet, but they are making some of the most helpful TH-cam lessons using current modern techniques in short, simple and easy to follow lessons. Please have your condition diagnosed by a proper physician and or physical therapist or athletic trainer to ensure your particular problem matches these lessons. I completely admire the immensity of these TH-cam's on so many conditions. Gentlemen, your are to me the most famous teaching Physical Therapists on the internet! Keep it up!
Oh my goodness! This Video is Heaven Sent! I appreciate you both! Good God! I have an undiagnosed Genetic Muscular Disorder! Have been intuitively doing these things and will be sharing this with our Neurologists and Genetics Doctors and Nurses to hopefully 🙏 Test the correct next choices for answers! Good Golly Miss Molly! Any advice would be gratefully passed on!!!! Nelson bC canada 🇨🇦. Much love 💕
i have bad left hip pain. i'm 30 and had 4 kids. i hold my son often on the right side.
Thanks for teaching ways how to stretch and strengthen the hip to relieve hip pain. Thanking Bob and Brad for helpful exercises.
Your love for the people is real
Thank you for explaining which movements should be avoided. So important !
Your exercises are a big help to me, thanks,
I try to walk backwards every now and then. Seems to help? What do you guys think. Thanks for these extra tips.
You guys are just the best! Thank you for all the tips to help this aging body feel better!
I just turned 30 but with all the working from home, I have been a frequent visitor to this channel with my shoulder, back and now hip pain haha, thank you Bod and Brad~ (my youtube recommendation be like - how to do makeup and how to ease back pain 🤣)
Good one! I have been having hip pain and am guilty of two of these. Thanks for the info.
I’m guilty of always standing with my left hip out.
Thank you bob and brad for being awesome.
Bob & Brad: I can't find the book "The McKenzie Method for Treating Hip Pain". BoB & Brad, can you tell me who the publisher is? Thank you very much Bob & Brad!
Why haven't you ever thanked me for being awesome?
BOTH BOB N BRAD, I WATCH YOUR SHOWS REGULARLY N LEARN SOMETHING NEW EACH TIME. BRAD IS AMUSING, WHERE AS BOB IS LITTLE SERIOUS TYPE.
Thank you Bob and brand for your amazing video, you guys are doing wonderful job 👏
Hi Bod & Brad. Everything you guys talked about in my own discovery I have experienced it.
Yes, kind of like you. You are the best in my opinion too.. I was just walking around the dog park and didn’t get that the long stride I was taking was causing pain. Thank you
My stride increased recently and my hip pain came back.
Thanks for the tips especially the pillow tip
Wow, This video came up on my home page and it sure makes a lot of sense. Thanks a bunch guys! Really appreciate your help.
Thanks, very clear explanation.
Knees above the hip when sitting is a massive thing for me. Instant difference when i level it out. I used to do everything mentioned here. It's so obvious looking back now...
Love your presentation as they are so helpful ! I want more videos on stretching to prevent low back pain. Thank you !!
Great helpful tips thanks Bob brad
Thank you so very much Bob and Brad for your wonderful tips. God bless you both 🙏🏻
Thanks again Bob and Brad. You guys are helping a lot of people. Love you for it🤗
3 or 4 of the things I definitely needed to stop. I have had leg pain for about 6 months now and I tried some of the ideas you presented here. Shorten strides, putting more weight on one hip or leg, and not laying on the hip bone in bed. I also decided to try wearing my support hose on the painful leg and that helps when I wear them all day.
You’re not only very good and helpful but very entertaining too.
Really useful practical advice. Thanks 🙏
You have made a major influence!!
These video s have helped
me A Lot !!!
Thank you . Those tips will be helpful . I do some now , but needed more !
Thank you gentlemen I have been searching for help since they stop medical help for this problem on my medical plan.
This is really helpful advice! Thanks Bob and Brad! Always good to watch and amusing too 😄
This is amazing. Thank you for your work, you do Gods work on earth. Thank you. Be blessed.
Very good Info, it's basic but it can really help. Thanks for that. 👍
