No matter how I look here while Turhan's intention was obvious I think what Atike said also convinced Kosem to execute Ibrahim. She couldn't influence her mother and became the game changer.
Atike had the chance to save Ibrahim and blamed it on Turhan. But instead, she chooses to antagonize her mother which makes Kosem more anxious about her regent and her fear of getting murdered.

Sultana Kosem understood the dynamics of power. She did not care if it meant she was lonely after the death of her powerful husband. This is why he chose her, as fidelity meant as much as love. The loyalty she showed, was to the State above even her own desires. There are some that maintained loyalty to her because they understood this.

Both in history and show , after that happening Kosem would never been the same. To a good leader and a very wise politician she would became mad because she sacrifice and suffered a lot for the Ottoman Empire too much times ( plus the chauvinist criticals she had to dealt every time).
But while we can blame her for things, Ibrahim's execution is not a fault, I won't cry for him ( it's weird that writters try to diabolize womens who was not in fault like historical Hurrem and Mahidevran, but try to make us sympathize with Ibrahim the mad, in reality no one cry for him even his sisters, there is only his mother who cry for him but it was understable in her case). Yes, his madness was not an excuse , compare him to Sultan Mustafa who was truly innocent.
Unlike Suleiman who execute his sons to a way very cold ( I really wanted to slap him for that he was the first responsible of this), I really want to hug Kosem after Ibrahim die.
The last words of the historical Sultan Ibrahim were according to some sources "mercy. Hasn't there been someone who has eaten my bread and will have mercy on me?".
Another source says he would rather ask in which passage of the Quran he is allowed to be executed. He would let himself be done if the executioners showed him. But they executed him without answering him (at the same time the executioners of the Ottoman Empire are deaf and mute so obviously they will not answer the question)

Kosem indeed got drunk by the wine of power. "Protecting the state" "Fulfilling my promise to Sultan Ahmed " or "Making sacrifice for the dynesty" are always argument used by her in order to assure her absolute power and serving the financial interest of her cartel (exactly like Safiye Sultan in the times of Murad 3 and Mehmed 2). Remember that she is the one who voluntarely put a mad person in the throne overthrowing her son Sultan Murad, who all historians agree to be the greatest sultan in the 2 centuries following Sultan Suleyman. If you read any real political scientist like Machiavelli or Pareto you will understand that history is always revolving around the ambitions of two types of elite: fox and lions. Fox usually use lots of type of combinations to speculate and advance their financial interest. When they are controlled, a great time of material prosperity comes which benefit all. However, when they aren't, corruption and short term thinking remains . The same goes for lions, when they are controlled, the society values are emphazied on family, patriotism, religion, duty and individual responsability. However if they are not controlled, the society got trapped in a frozen state of development. Fox usually use corruption to gain power whereas lions are not frightened to use force. So the most important thing for a sucesseful society is to have a good circulation beetwen these types of elites and an overall balance. This is exactly what Sultan Murad attempted to do. He was a lion in a world overwhelmed by corrupted fox, so he was forced to use force and absolutism to remake the balance. When we look to the data, he made huge improvement for the empire when it comes to refueling the treasury and even conquering places that were impossible to think of when we look at the initial greed of janissaries that dared to kill a Sultan for the first of the empire history. I believe Kosem was innocent at the beginning and was genuinely concerned about the well being of the state however she became progressively what she was the most afraid of : The boss of foxes, a new Safiye Sultan. This was predictable because this happens when you get too much involved in the logic of power. One last thing we can say about Kosem that explain how smart she was ( from the serie's point of view), she built her own state in the state with the backing of some lions types like Kemankes ( loving her ) and huseyin pasha. She also managed to buy the public opinion and the people's conscience by her charity (and we must also ask where does all this money comes from). The reign of sultanas can really be compared to today's welfare state and other socialist regimes. Speaking on the behalf of people but oppressing every other opposition with the means of the state and it's bureaucracy.

Same to Atike, when she has the chance to save Ibrahim and convinced Kosem to make him retire instead of executing him, she chooses to threaten Kosem.
Atike is dumb, no smart person would threaten Kosem. Even Turhan dared to do so after she has much power. Kosem at this time is at the peak of power and can execute anyone easily, I think her act is what any rational person would do if threatened.
With that being said, I still do not agree with how Kosem kill her son.

Interesting. Did this show not tell you Ibrahim the Mad murdered 280 concubines on a rumor? Nah this show wants to paint Kosem as the mad one. That’s what they like to do to strong women leaders. Smh 🤦🏼‍♀️
