He went down in history as one of the youngest sultans to ascend the Ottoman throne. He became sultan at the age of 14.
Accession to the Throne
Young Osman ascended the Ottoman throne in 1618 after Sultan Mustafa I was deposed for the second time.
During his reign, he aimed to modernize the state and implement new reforms. However, his innovative approach drew strong reactions, especially from the Janissaries and palace circles.
Reform Plans
Young Osman planned several military and administrative reforms:
He wanted to abolish the Janissary Corps, which triggered great opposition from the Janissaries.
His goal was to increase military discipline and restore the state’s former power.
He decided to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca, but this decision sparked political controversy.
Execution and Tragic Death
In 1622, a major rebellion broke out among the Janissaries. This event became known as the "Revolt after the Hotin Campaign."
Young Osman was captured by the rebels and strangled to death in the Yedikule Dungeons. He was the first Ottoman sultan to be deposed and killed. His tragic death marked a significant turning point in Ottoman history.
