      It's not like you have to get their entire range though.
      They have have plenty of single pigment colors to choose from - You can always avoid the multiple pigment colors and get the ones you're interested in. I don't see the point in avoiding the entire range range because of it. Their Marine blue is a really stunning version of a single pigment PB16 (which not many brands offer) for example.
      Personally, I'm a bit more worried about their lightfastness ratings of some of the colors, and frankly, a little confused as to how they manage to make highly lightfast pigments into low lightfastness colors. But again - we can always stay away from the ones with properties we don't like.
      Plus, I have to say that companies׳ odd multi pigment mixes often give me new ideas for new colors to add to my palette for their mixing properties...
      That's how I discovered PBr25 (which not a well known or often used pigment) as a great mixing color for earthy greens, deep rich reddish purples and maroonish perylene-y colors. That's how I discovered I really like the Phtalo Green YS PG36 for mixing greens (which no one ever uses), and actually prefer it to PG7 in my palette. That's how I found Anthraquinoid red PR177 for mixing rich deep darks of just about anything - and the purples it can make are stunning!
      You can pick and choose what you like from each brand, and discover new things from the ones you don't 🙂
      Nerdy, but I love it 🤓

      Not all people are professional selling artists. The point is to give people an idea what is there to play with. To each their own. I dont always like single pigments. For my cards i however do use them caus i know they will get sent. But that may not be for evryones liking. Some use tombows wich are neither lightfast or single pigment. I am not trying to hurt you. But do accept there are different levels of art and different people. ps fellow schmincke addict here

    You already know I like them A LOT XD
    Rose Madder is one of my favorites by them, but I truly like the whole range. I'm not bothered with the multi pigments colors, as it often is many pigments of the same "family" (as in many yellow pigments) so there's not a high risk of unexpected mixes if I bring in other colors. Holbein is (for now) easy for me to find and quite affordable so that's why I like them a lot! They are awesome for illustration work.

    • @OtoKano

      Holbein’s affordability and smoothness is why Holbein will always be the bulk of my colour supplies.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad we have so many different perspectives on our favorite supplies. Here in the US, or at least for me in California, Holbein are the same price as Daniel Smith in my local art store. Even online they're $9.50-18.30 USD per tube. Since I like the texture of DS a bit better, it's never been a huge draw for me to want to switch if the prices are the same, but I can see the value in these if they were both affordable and widely available!

      I teach watercolor painting & for years did not recommend Holbein because they did not publish the lightfastness or transparency of their paint. I also do not like their “creative” naming of the colors. Very confusing to painters.

    What a sweet lady, Dr. Oto Kano!! I've watched her videos. I bought around 50-60 Holbein paints. I like Tom Lynch's paintings. From his Art books, videos I bought his recommendation of ceramic palette, Sable brushes, Holbein misters, etc. I KNOW NOW I'd have saved several hundreds of $$ by watching TH-cam artists. THIS IS FUNNY:):):) I NEVER KNEW Id have access to REAL ARTISTS On TH-cam!!!#....I retired from teaching 37 years in June. Then, with extra time I was listening to 70'some music and Lindsey "popped up"...lol
    Now, I have learned so much!# Thank.YOU, thank.Lindsie, thank Marty, thank Angelp, thank Dr. Oto, thank Steve, & BIG THANKS TO Rick Swartz (sp). & others.
    I tried getting a few pinters together. No one was interested in small Texas town. I was DETERMINED to learn! SO EXCITED when I found ya'll....God is Good:):)

    Great information on these, about having multiple pigments in one colour , Daniel Smith also uses multiple pigments
    So for me I cannot understand why it's ok for Daniel Smith to do that but other companies cannot without getting the "stink eye" from us artists

      I don't use most of DS's 3-color blends either ;) It's not that they have them, it's that so many of their paints are 3-color blends, so proportionally, I think it's worth a mention.

    Single-pigment colors, in Holbein, are rare ☹️ Quite disappointing for a Japanese brand 🇯🇵

  • @Renilou2
    @Renilou2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow. 98% of all my Holbein colors are single pigment. They sell all the single pigment colors anyone really needs. One of my favorites that was once a single pigment color is Peacock Blue (Phthalocyanine cyan PB17) but has changed because of the discontinuation of the pigment . Still the best color even though its now a mix of Phthalo Blue and Phthalo green.

    I wish the "like" button has a "heart" option. I've been spoiled by long swatching videos of my favorite wc brands and I LOVE it haha Thank you, Denise!
    I've also been put off by the number of multi-pigment colors in Holbein, but the single pigments I've tried have been pretty great and because Holbein is super cheap compared to DS, I have Holbein as my secondary/alternate brand.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree on the single pigments, they're super lovely! As for affordability, I'm so, so curious about that in other counties. Here in California, they're just as expensive as DS, and same for our online stores too. I checked Jacksons thinking maybe they'd be cheaper there and they're MORE expensive.

    • @fufufuaru
      @fufufuaru 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I live in the Philippines, which is probably why it's cheaper for me bec Japan is nearer vs US. One 15ml tube of Holbein wc paint is around the same price as DS 5ml. Kinda insane to think about hahaha
      [edit] I re-checked the prices on my favorite local online shops and many 15ml tubes of Holbein are actually about 50% to 25% bit cheaper VS 5ml tubes of daniel smith.

      @inLiquidColor In Japan, Holbeins are RIDICULOUSLY cheap. A 15ml tube can range from THREE dollars (£2.20) to $7 (£5) a tube. In the UK, Daniel Smith paints are very expensive - $15 (£11) to $44 (£32). You can't find a 15ml tube of any artist quality paints in the UK. This is why when I do get the chance to go to Japan, I stock up on Holbein paints and use them as the main bulk of my palette. Would love to have all of them Daniel Smith but it's just not possible atm for me, especially with the quantity of paints I use.
      For reference, in the UK Holbeins are $13 (£9.40) to $32 (£23.50), and I would NOT recommend ever spending that sort of money on Holbein paints. Honestly just buy Daniel Smith for that price. So I can understand why people would feel dissapointed with Holbeins after paying that kind of money. Honestly not worth it. Only buy Holbein if you get the chance to go to Japan or can get someone from Japan to get it for you.

    Thank you so much, I love Holbein colors, I got around20 of them but now I know that I will go and get the PB16 Marine Blue, the Cobalt Light Violet PV47 and some others like the PB35 Cerulean Blue. I would love for you if you can swatch the Da Vinci as well as the Schmincke. I also have all the Sennelier in that big box from Jackson's Art but they are 10 ml only, otherwise, I would have sent you half pans. I am a huge fan of these magnificent honeybees colors.
    I recently bought some Quor that I liked very much for the vibrancy and transparency, but like Winsor & Newton, they are too expensive (in Canada).
    Love your work on the videos :-)

    I am new to all that pigment stuff in colours. So I wonder, does it matter for beginning illustrators if colours are made of single or several pigments? Seems like its more important for watercolor artists. (According to the comments)
    Of course I knew about pigments but I never thought about how this could influence paint mixing and all that stuff.
    I just chose whatever color I liked, bought and used it 🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cyan! There are two things that I can think of that really matter in regards to pigment information. The first is that multipigment paints *can* be harder to mix, or in other words, easier to muddy up. It may look one color, but have another color in its composition that makes in unreliable when mixed. It's not a death sentence though and if you like the color and don't have issue with it, by all means go ahead and keep using it. However, when building a limited artists palette, it's general more beneficial to have single pigments that you can mix together to make other colors, rather than starting with the other colors that can't be broken down into their components (e.g. a convenience green made with PG7 and PY3 can be eassssily mixed if you already have PG7 and PY3 on your palette, and there's no need wasting a well on that color unless you use a LOT of it.)
      The other reason I recommend knowing at least what pigment numbers you have yourself is so that you don't buy duplicates of the same color accidentally. PG7 is phthalo green blue shade, but has a variety of other names like viridian, viridian hue, emerald green, or winsor green depending on the brand - but it's all the same color. I hope that helps!

    I like Holbein brand. I like their Ultramarine Deep, Cobalt Green, Cobalt Violet Lt , Gold and their Rose Madder. Their 30 set were my first professional set of watercolours so they have a special place in my collection. They are a bit strange though. Transparent on paper but seemingly opaque in the palette. They don't flow too much and stay put which makes them good for glazing and detail.

    (Sorry for so many comments, I’m commenting as I watch …)
    I use PY129, Daniel Smith’s Rich Green Gold, a LOT. I do a lot of botanical painting and I use it there obviously because it is such a good color for new foliage or light shining through leaves. But I also love it for mixing - I mix it with PB60 for olive green, PG7 for a surprisingly good sap green, and DS Transparent Pyrrol Orange or PR122 for crazy rich browns. It also mixes with dioxazine violet to make a nice “tobacco brown” kind of color. I put a thing up on my Instagram showing some mixes a while ago.
    I agree, the color on its own is unlovely. But it’s just so useful, every time I try to do without it I’m sad. I think of it as like a cool earth yellow.

    Okay, I'm confused. You said at about 34:10 (you were painting in BV7, BV15 Bright Violet) that the lightfast rating was one, which meant it was a fugitive color. On the ASTM rating scale, one means excellent lightfastness. On the Blue Wool Scale, one means fugitive. Does this mean that Holbein uses the Blue Wool Scale for its lightfast ratings? I thought paint manufacturers used the ASTM. Or do some use ASTM, and some use the Blue Wool scale? How can we tell which one they're using? Anyway, I appreciate you spending the time to share your information with us. Thanks!

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Different manufacturers use different ratings. ASTM is usually used by western companies. Holbein uses a scale from 1-4 (in roman numerals), which I don't think is as many steps as the blue wool scale.

      I have lots of videos on specific pigments in the Color Spotlight series, like PV19 and PY42/43 :)

    What do manufactures do to make the same pigment look so different? In the Holbein swatches three swatches are PB108, for example.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has to do with the way pigments are processed. Some pigments will always look similar like ultramarine, while others like PBr7 or PV19 can look very different.

    Seeing swatches is always so relaxing and intriguing, so many colors!
    I was put off by holbein because they have so many multiple pigment mixtures and I wanted single pigments, but they look gorgeous still :)
    About the PR122 and PR202, supposedly PR122 mixes much cleaner and vibrant colors than PR202, especially the violets. Not as lightfast as 202, but still really good though. :)

    Someone should make these 'test palettes' for all brands so we all can try all kinds of paints for all the brands at affordable prices......

      I've toyed with the idea, but I'm not sure it would be cost effective for me to do so. However many companies have dot cards available like Daniel Smith, Schmincke, DaVinci and others.

    You actually included the Perylene maroon in your fav reds video I think as your honorable mention or the fifth spot😂 well the fact you forgot about it makes me understand why it is so lower on your list haha

      As I was talking about it I was like... Um oh yeah, haha I'm pretty sure it was on the reds list ;) I definitely don't use it as much though. Need to practice!

    I love how you swatch out your watercolors. Wow she did a great job on that pallet. one question is what type of paper do you use in your swatches. Do you use cold press or both cold & hot for your color swatches?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For these I use Canson XL. For my swatch binder, I use Arches CP.

    Thank you for these videos. They are very informative.
    I do have a question: is there a reason why you don't prewet the paints before swatching? I mean, why not spray them with water before use so they rewet much easier. It will be much easier on the brush and you and your shoulder and it's faster. I see only benefits of misting. :)

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just couldn't find my spray bottle ;) Holbein are really easy to rewet though, aside from that gold.

    I have only started watching the video, but I am baffled by the color choices that you were sent. For example, I count five single-pigment Cadmium Yellows in Holbein's list (Deep, Lemon, Light, Yellow Orange, and Pale); two single-pigment Imidiazole Yellows (Lemon and Yellow); plus two other single pigment yellows: Isoindolinone Yellow Deep and Yellow Ochre.
    There are similar single-pigment choices for all the other colors, and I wish that Oto Kano had included more of these, which are far more useful for watercolor artists, as opposed to illustrators, who probably value convenience mixtures more.
    Just to be snarky, I counted the Yellows of the Daniel Smith chart, and there are 18 yellows, 6 of which are mixtures and 4 of those are three-pigment mixes.
    Including so many convenience mixtures gives the impression that Holbein isn't for the serious watercolor artist, and that makes me sad. I use these paints a great deal and especially love the warm colors, which are rich and clear. I also adore Daniel Smith paints, too, but more for the cooler and earth colors.

      The colors here are from a viewer's personal collection, so they are what she had on hand, and maybe not what I would have selected myself. I do agree I don't love how many triple mixtures there are, but there are brands for everyone based on whether you do or don't want to mix your own colors.

    • @jerrydavis5734
      @jerrydavis5734 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do wish Holbein would offer a pure pigment set like Mijello does. I highly recommend the Imidiazole Yellow (and Brown, too) if you ever get a chance to try one or both.

    Hi. I have Holbein Raw Sienna, but it is not a single pigment as in your vid. It is a mix of PBr7 and PY42. Why is yours different?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure. As I mentioned this set was gifted to me. My guess is they either reformulated it, or the pigment info may have been accidentally written down wrong.

      In Liquid Color Hi👋. Perhaps, sometimes the Asian manufacturers do treat different markets differently, but you are probably right. Holbein pigment info is not given on their website, only on the tube. My favourite Holbein colour is Pyrrole Rubin (PR264), but I also like their Verditer blue and Yellow grey. Holbein watercolor paints are about colour vibrancy, not granulation. Have a good evening.

      In Liquid Color Thanks so much for that chart. Just checked it out and found it slightly amusing that all their paints state "caution" as their toxic rating. Please extend my thanks to the other viewer who supplied the link. Glad we cleared that up. Keep up the good effort. Have a good evening.

    I feel like if you were to be more of a floral artist, you might appreciate these colors more, appreciate the brand more. Also, you said they may have created more work for themselves.. what I say to this comment is, I appreciate that they do all of this color mixing because not all of us are so educated on all of these formulas as you seem to be. I appreciate all of the variety. I do appreciate your reviews but I think if one is a floral artist perhaps they should look to another reviewer.
    Respectfully...
    Thank you
