    Huge huge congratulations for reaching 30K!!! You are so deserving of it!! It's an honour that you did Holbein for your 30K. I think it's a great idea to test out the same colors on cotton paper, so thank you for doing this. Thank you also for all the shout outs, it is much appreciated.

    So glad you re-swatched Holbein paints on cotton paper. Just a note, if anyone wants to see more paintings using Holbein watercolors, Maria Raczynska, also on TH-cam, uses Holbein. Her paintings are worth checking out. Amazon sells what we might commonly call "sampler packs" of 12 or 24 tubes for about $2 to $3 a tube but they are small (5 ml). Prices fluctuate so wait if they are higher than that. If you figure, their M Graham paints or Daniel Smith paints are $10 to $15 a tube for 15 ml, it's not unreasonable but you get what they give you.

    I think Holbein's price depends on where you shop. They are close to the same price as Daniel Smith Luminescence line, Sennilier, Schmincke Hordam, and M Graham tubes online via Dick Blick. Amazon was cheaper in most cases. There even for the extra fine, Daniel smith was running around $60 for 6 tubes, and Holbein was around $50 for 18 tubes. I didn't reprice it all, but when I first looked at the Holbein paints awhile back, I could get the equivalent of all 15ml tubes for the Miyazaki palette for less by getting over half the colors on Amazon with the 18 pack having colors I didn't need and filling out the missing colors from DickBlick for about 30% less than just DickBlick alone. (I pretty much have to buy online as our watercolor selection is rarely stocked Winsor and Newton Cotman, Winsor and Newton Professional, Daniel Smith extra fine, and Van Gogh. And when I say rarely stocked, I mean good luck at finding a random 10 colors of paint in each set and only a tube or 2 of those. They tend to be about double the online price. Pat Catan's is a horrible store for art supplies, but it's all we have.)
    Which being a palette for Miyazaki can kind of answer what use the brighter, less natural colors have for some.

    Thank you so much for this. I love Holbein paints, but they seem to get very little love from reviewers. I am glad you revisited these paints--they deserve more attention. I should add that Ms. Kano did not send you many single-pigment paints, and I find that odd. Imidiazole yellows, for example, are lovely, vibrant, single pigment paints and for many of us, are preferable to the multi-pigment mixtures you received.

    I've played this video several times now while working on my own art. It's somehow relaxing to hear you talk about the colors and paint and I look over and find new colors I want to add to my collection. Holbein is my personal favorite brand because I like how the watercolors react to water on the page. They're a little tame compared to some other brands but I feel like it gives me more control in an already chaotic medium! =)

    I've been tempted to buy Arteza's WC paper for practice. Is your dissatisfaction with it limited to it's poor performance when swatching? Or does it perform poorly overall and I should get some Canson XL WC paper or some other student brand instead?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The colors just tend to dull down a lot, and some look chalky. As you can see here, it's inconsistent though. It also has a MUCH stronger texture. I've painted on it before and been fine with the results, but not blown away. I greatly prefer the Canson XL as a cheap cellulose option.

    • @karuno9721
      @karuno9721 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tested it yet but a good not cotton paper is the bockingford watercolor paper! It's really good. Obviously it won't beat cotton paper but still pretty good! I did like the canson xl, but they really made the quality of it go down. I have 5 pads and every pad of mine has different paper. With the new ones just pilling much faster and not absorbing the paint at all. Every of my pads had different textures and absorbed the paint differently. The old ones for sure did better!

    I just checked the Holbein Website and found something interesting about the lightfastness ratings. For the Holbein Artists’ Watercolor (tube-form) the lightfastness ratings go from one to two stars but for the Holbein Half Pan Watercolor (individual pans) the lightfastness goes from one to four stars. Although no one of the colors have the 4 stare rating with is supposed to be absolute permanent (not sure how that differs from permanent ).

    I am watching from my other account, felt I needed a change (previously inder Adela J. with a cat as profile-picture). Before I forget, what is you nail polish, it´s a beautiful color.
    I have usually chosen colors because they were pretty and did not think so much about lightfastness- that is something I am starting to pay more attention to. I have actually have a nice collection of Holbein watercolors, I usually by them from a Malaysian store online www.stickerrificstore.com, the people there are super sweet, the prices are not bad at all and you have the option to bye the paints in tubes, pans and sets.
    Taxes are usually really expensive in Norway so I do always ask the store to lower the price on the invoice so I can get around paying import tax. They have kindly always done that for me. The delivery can take from a litte over two weeks to a month depending on were I am in the country. Would defiantly recommend ordering from them!

    Hi, request for your suggestion.. Should I invest in a 98 color set of sennelier or 108 tube set of holbien?
    Thank you

    Congrats on the 30K! Swatching on good paper makes all the difference. I only have a couple of Holbein watercolours, they seem to be, along with W&N and DS the standard watercolour stock they have in chain art stores, here in Montreal. I don't know why Holbein never struck me as a must try paint. When it comes to brands, I sometimes give them character traits: I enjoy M. Graham's vibrancy, Sennelier's delicateness, Daniel Smith's originality, QOR's clarity, and Mijello's in your face character, but Holbein... I still don't know to characterize it. Any particular colours you think would be good brand representatives I should try?

    Thanks for this video. It really helps explaining the color breakdown to those of us starting out. I bought the holbein larger set for some under the sea classes and some masha granulating watercolors on etsy that are gorgeous. So when I swatch it will make more sense to me.

    I'm trying to put together a ghibli inspired watercolor pallete. Your swatch videos really help and finally knowing that Hayao Miyazaki uses this particular brand helps put the pallete together. Although I'm not sure about the multi pigment composition of most of their color range it's a huge help knowing what the colors look like before I buy them.

    The first thing I thought of when you where talking about animals you could use metallic watercolor with, was Dogbane Leaf Beetle (Chrysochus auratus).

    Oeh I like the Holbein crimson lake. The pearl copper is pretty too. (I make my own , wondering if what adding ecoline does to that premade mix. That is like over 2 years old and is still shining like no tomorrow. I sometimes use it as an accent in landscapes for morning or evening dew, or fog shimmers,never did a whole painting with them. )

    Congrats on 30K, Denise! Yes, I for one would LOVE to see the Swatch With Me series extended to include cotton paper. The kind of paper does indeed make such a difference in how watercolors look, act and dry. Hoping to see more of these! 😁😁😁

    For a metallic painting idea, draw a crow (with deep purples and hints of green sheen on the feathers) that has gathered shiny jewels.
    There's a story out there where a group of crows started bringing this little girl jewelry and trinkets.

    As the sender, I can confirm that the small metallics dot card are the Holbein gouache, not the watercolor! I’m glad the little boxes/opacity lines were convenient for you; I was a little nervous that they’d be too difficult to rewet from the dots, but they look fine! I thought I had remembered other people asking about the metallic paints, so I wanted to send them in case they were useful for a review/swatching like this. If it comes up later, the W&N dots are also gouache.

    This is sooo addictive! I have binge watched a lot of your swatching videos tonight because TH-cam is paying attention and it showed up as recommended after I was looking at Daniel Smith on Amazon. Hmm....
    I was wondering, though. Could it be that since the cellulose swatches were done a while back they might have faded or completely cured and that is why there is a difference?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Darn those watching eyes haha. Artist quality materials are generally very lightfast, so the color difference is moreso due to the way the paper absorbs the color. They'd look the same even if I painted the cellulose ones again. (They're also kept in a binder away from light.)

    Congratulations Denise! Would love to see a comparison of swatch charts on cotton paper. I was wondering if your review of the Turner watercolor set from Jerry's is still on a waiting list. ☺ I would really enjoy that one. Love the information you provide while describing the properties of the different brands. Thanks for sharing.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda! I still have some colors from Turner (not a set but select colors) and they're casually on the list but albeit lower down from some other pressing projects. I think they're good for the price point, but I don't see them as a direct replacement for something like Daniel Smith. They do have some interesting colors (like the mayans) and are affordable, but they don't really excite me. They're perfectly acceptable paints, but I guess I'll put it this way, I've had them for two years but have given away the tubes (just have some half pans left) and they're still on the list for review.

    The only way for me to get watercolors / paper is from amazon 😅 there really isn’t art stores in Washington that are worth it because they overprice..or they don’t have what im looking for which is sad.

      As an environmental educator, I try to do as much as I can to reduce my impact including trying to avoid toxic colors when I can. I also don't usually like opaque colors and really prefer the transparent alternatives that are now available :)

    Congratulations and thank you for revisiting Denise! Also, about a year ago I purchased a 24 set of holbein watercolors for $45. I thought it was odd that you said they were so expensive because I got my set so inexpensively. I also live in the US but I just thought that I'd say from my experience they aren't that pricey. This is where I got them, though the set looks somewhat different from when I bought it.

    I would love to see more “Swatch with Me” videos where you compare the wood pulp paper to cotton. I’m taking your advice and I’ve started investing in cotton paper. I’ve noticed a difference in working with cotton paper, but I’m not very proficient (or confident) in my handling of the paints on cotton. I’m hoping that will come with more practice.
    Congratulations on 30k subs! You deserve it.
