clarification? you have a whole video based on non-sense, Beyoncé sampled drums from a 1999 house sound base song, Girl, I used to like your content, but this is literal hypocrisy, and not just your video, but so many are just talking about this, Black Women hurt each other, every ethnicity continues to do this over and over, the difference is that white people get away with it, but us? we are the minority, we should empower one another, not do thiiiiis, this whole video is just. No, no, and I can agree that Renaissance is not her strongest album but Beyoncé has outdone herself as an artist, she has her name credited, and many other people's names too. Give me a break.
*I understand why Kelis is also targeting her frustrations directly at Beyonce,* and I'm a Beyonce fan. All she's saying is: *it's simply common decency* (especially if some artist she didn't even know, understood the proper protocol) considering the fact that Bey actually knows her through mutual friends. It would be like: if we had a mutual friend; but *we* were not necessarily friends ourselves, and I sampled your material by only asking the entity who legally owned it even though I do have access and proper channels to notify you personally as if your permission is insignificant.
@@Vintagegirl70 she doesn't OWE anything and Kelis never said THAT. To understand what Kelis actually said, roll video again then. She never said that to Beyonce, she said ish to Pharrell and about Pharellllllll concerning ALL that wiritng/publishing legal stuff. She had TWO commentaries in ONE, one was for Beyonce (non legal talk) and one for Pharell (more legal and allegations of bad deal and exploitation)
But she wanted BYONCE to call her! 🤧😭 in the mist of all this production and recoding and promotion, BEYONCÉ or someone from the TEAM was suppose to call her! 😭😭😭
Kelis did write but was not properly credited. That's why she's upset because now her work is being used but she's not rightfully compensated or credited when it's sampled. Just because something's legal doesn't make it right either
Beyonces a clown for thinking she’s above others and doesn’t have the decency to make time out of her diva career to tap somones line for their song… Beyoncé has balls 😂
@Flora GoodVibes they came up together..he wasn’t on when they met..she was literally the first one to work w them hence why she was on almost everything they produced when they first came out,.and again as someone who was there and knows..shit was done behind her back and it was dirty and foul..it’s not about Bey really I get the respect aspect and I feel her..it’s P and their former manager..there’s a lot people don’t know
One thing about Kelis; she ain’t never scared. Like she definitely gives me “…don’t start none, won’t be none” energy. I think it’s the principle for her more than anything; not the situation.
She ain’t gotta be scared. I’m tryna figure out why she’s mad? The song wasn’t hers, and the beat Beyonce used (which was produced by The Neptunes), she was cleared to use.
I’m with Kelis. Whether it’s from Beyoncé, her team, Pharrell, etc, she deserves her flowers. At the very least, the respect of a simple email would’ve sufficed.
If Kelis wrote and produced the track herself. 1000% agree. If she just sang a song someone else wrote and produced. It’s not hers. She’s just an actress reading someone else’s lines. A mention would’ve been nice, but not needed.
Kelis is absolutely in her right to address this, and I respect her for doing it head on and straightforward. This woman is so secure in herself and her art, she expands her interests like food and cooking and minds her business. She is not trying to stay relevant because she and her music and artist identity IS relevant. Dismissing her complaints is the opposite of female/artist empowerment, both topics B & P love to be spokesperson for. Kelis has been ripped off and when she speaks up we should listen and not dismiss the valid points she is making.
It's not "head on and straight forward," if that was the case it would only be about Chad and Farrell, and she would be in court...like the other artists who got their credits and royalties back.
Her complaints DESERVE to be dismissed because they're invalid. She didn't even hear the song to know what part of it was sampled. Bey sampled only the beat of the song, no part of Kelis' vocals, not even her whisper was on the track, meaning the only person Bey had to ask for permission was the PRODUCER. All she had to do was wait to hear the song. She must feel very silly right now.
kelis pulling a khia and going at the wrong person. beyonce cleared the song with the people who owned it. Kelis does not own the song . if she is mad either rerecord it or go to court
When is Kelis going to apologize to Beyonce! I listened to the song. Kelis vocals were NOT sampled, only the beat from the song and Chad & Pharrell are the ones who created the beats..SO WHAT IS KELIS REALLY MAD ABOUT?? Beyonce and Rhianna's success? Because she feels like it should have been her?? I could understand if she was using her vocals... but she's using the beat.
Kelis is totally justified in her feelings and while I like Pharrell and The Neptunes they totally did cheat her and steal from her and it’s wrong. She’s a very underestimated industry pioneer. Milkshake is one of the most sampled songs of our generation and it’s often she doesn’t get credits let alone royalties due to The Neptunes owning the rights to it. The industry really filled with snakes…
Again she was 19 and this was late 90's early 2000s. This was before people were business savvy and knew about owning their masters etc. The only way people thought they could make it in the music industry was by signing a record deal
@@antasiashaw8815 🤦🏾♀️We all love Beyonce. But y'all have to realize there are legends and icons that still don't own their masters bc they got screwed over by record execs. It's actually worse to use their music without saying anything bc it's like you're going along with the people exploiting them and basically showing them they don't matter. It's about respect and decency.
I totally agree with her… so often as woman we’re made to feel like we shouldn’t say or can’t stand up for what’s right…. Damn that…. She has a right to feel some type of way…. Period!

@@yeahyeahyeah5035 Sweetheart, Kelis already said she KNOWS what she owns. So I already understand the pretenses behind legality. Beyoncé will most likely not have any repercussions to sampling Kelis’ music. What you CANNOT state to me is how Kelis is supposed to feel about it. She is ALLOWED to feel upset and express how upset she is about her music being sampled and being NOT made aware whether she owns the rights or not, especially since Beyoncé and Kelis have been in the same spaces according to Kelis so she can call up if she wanted to. She can be respectful, which is Kelis’ point.
Hell she’s been doing that for the last 5 years! I remember peoples videos getting taken down on TH-cam for copyright reasons that uses her songs as background music.

Especially if their BRAND actually CENTERS around it. Some female artists do not quote Igbo feminists, and align themselves with all things women centric. They just get $ and appeal to men and have a good time. There's no "sisterhood" marketing etc. SO in closing, that means it looks even wierder for an artist's who gets money from that MESSAGE. It comes off then as PANDERING and not authenticity. That's why the comment Kelis said about "I don't talk about it, I am about it" was supposed to go to the heart of. For anyone on here who wants to still play dumb and deliberately dissect what Kelis SAID in the video wrong, free country- do that, it's just obvious some are being willfully ignorant and blind to accommodate WHO they wanna.
I'm South African and I also noticed she sampled from the Late South African legend Brenda Fassie in 'Don't break my soul', compare it with Brenda's song 'Ngiyakusaba' - kinda awkward because there was no credit whatsoever which is sad because Brenda's music was ahead of her time (1980s, 1990s) and it would've been awesome to introduce a new demographic to her work ...
I have yet to hear Bey's song - or album - but as regards Brenda's music, yes, I've heard some of her songs sampled by others and have often wondered whether she or her estate ever received royalties from it. Brenda was more than just a singer, she was an icon. I have heard a LOT of South African sounds, a lot of West African sounds, too, liberally sampled by the West. I doubt any of the original artists ever got credit or compensation. The music industry worldwide is insidious and blatantly rapacious and it's sadly not just the suits who are at fault but far too many artists as well. And, really, the artists should know better, because it's they and their fellow performers who ultimately stand to lose, both financially and with their fan bases.

This woman is a cry-baby. She was also abusive to NAS, both were abusive to each other, but she played the victim. Now, she is spreading nonsense, that Beyoncé stole her music. But she didn't steal it, she asked the people who own the song. If Kelis was young and dumb not to read her contract, it's her own fault. And she should direct her anger to the people she has problem with (Pharell and Chad), instead of attacking Beyoncé .

Why do we continue to allow Beyonce to do things we call other artists out for? Beyonce has been stealing music, looks, and all since her 1st solo album and we just sweep it under the rug… Google shows that Beyonce has the most copyright infringement cases of any artists… let that sink in, yet we never CALL HER OUT ON IT, or hold her accountable. This has got to stop. I stand with Kelis.
Every second i hear someone accuse Beyonce of stealing their song. A Jamaican woman by the name of Dr L'Antoinette Stines sued both Beyonce and Jay Z for using her words without permission.
Kelis was the one of the original girls stepping out the box. Her voice, albums and presence is still very relevant!! Give her the credit! The Neptune's know what they did. Which is why she bounced.
This is one of those times where I really can’t be a Stan of Beyoncé but I respect her as an artist. It’s a lot of things she did in her career that just doesn’t scream feminism at all. Desiree, the lady that sang “kissing you” she said Beyoncé can cover her song but not do a video, and what Beyoncé did…she created a video. Then got sued and had to pull her deluxe album from the selves and re-release it with a different song. She literally lost the clearance. Again extremely gifted and talented but super shady behind the scenes. Beyoncé is at a point in her career where she knows better and been through enough copyright infringement cases.
THIS! Yes, Deseree and that was some ego ISH, because she can't say she didn't get the cease and desist and she still went ahead and resang IT. I think she thought of how not as well known Deseree may appear then and how she is a POP star, Beyonce and that it'll just go over w/o issue. Deseree and her people pulled Beyonce into court so fast, and then WON based on the merits of the case. I bet some don't know of this case bc it would tarnish the pristine image of their virgoan Beyonce. Well, the reality IS: someone shoulda ask Beyonce since they feel so attached to her, and she is MUVA, why she did that ISH to darkerskinned Deseree and the song "Kissing YOU." I mean since EGO is only what infects Kelis, and apparently (sarcastic) since Beyonce has NEVER EVER suffered from unhealthy EGO before, even this case she lost in court, Desiree misunderstood, that Bey was gonna give the proceeds to charity or something, why Deseree stop her from feeding the world? MUVAAAAAA! LMAOOOOOOOO! That's how blinded some folks are as far as HUMAN. Beyonce is HUMAN. Ego can happen to everyone, it's possible. To call out someone like Kelis, for airing her grievances, while the Deseree case is a thorn in history for Beyonce of her disobedience LEGALLY, is wierd. Fandom/standom is really something ELSE. I agree with everything YOU said.
She mighta learned from Mathew Knowles. He looked like he did some shady ish, enuf that two of the original destiny child members had issues with him, Latoya and Latavia.
Wrong. So is Kelis a feminist for making 2 videos bashing Beyonce when Beyonce was the one who GAVE HER CREDIT for a song she didn't even produce or write? Kelis is a hater and y'all are falling for her fake victim mentality. It's embarrassing.
I think Kelis is absolutely right in the way she feels. It's HER song, her voice, her face, her talent and her artistry on it, regardless of what the paper work says. She MADE the song. Even if the Neptunes signed off on it, it is just common decency to appreciate the person who made the art. I know Pharrell wouldn't give a damn but Beyonce should have recognised her since she was using her art, respect between artists especially if she really is about empowerment and support like she says. If the roles were reversed and some artist did the exact same thing to Beyonce, they would have been antagonised to tears and probably had their career derailed. But because it's a 'smaller' or 'not-so-famous' artist, then it's okay. Sorry Beyhive but your queen was wrong on this. A little appreciation would have gone a long way
Their "Queen" is wrong on a lot of ish....she's built an entire career off of copying people & bitting other artist's styles. There is NOTHING original about her. With all this cancel culture ish it makes me wonder why she hasn't been canceled already. Any other artist would have been shredded & canceled YEARS ago for doing the crap Beyonce does. But people still wanna act like she can do no wrong smh
This was so well said, you’re completely right Beyoncé was wrong and she should have reached out to get Kelis’ permission because although she may not own the rights to her music from one artist to another you should recognise that that doesn’t change the fact that to an artist that is still their craft and hardwork so considering Beyoncé is an artist and knows how much she cares about her work she should have done the right and respectful thing and ask for Kelis’ permission

Nah, she doesn’t have to do that for every single artist she samples that’s just silly. She probably has no relationship whatsoever with B because of Pharrell
If you know the metrics of how business is conducted in music and entertainment you see why Kelis is upset and she has every right to be. A call wasn't necessary however it would have been a sign of respect since Beyonce upholds the woman in power movement. It's public knowledge that Kelis got swindled out of her rights for majority of her three albums due to trusting "friends" and not fully reading her contracts as its been stated on record, so that's why a phone call would've meant more in this particular situation. Did Beyonce and her team contact the right people to clear the song? Yes. Did the route of upholding her message for female empowerment take a hit? Yes in the eyes who know the full story. This is a common theme of women especially Black women not owning their music and getting credited for it. More focus on that instead of just trying to miscredit people's work.
Would you call someone who openly doesn't like you and shaded you through the beginning of your career for a 10 second beat that is not yours? Also she got credited for vocals and her vocals not even on the album.....
It is not public knowledge Kelis was swindled. This reminds me of when people said it was public knowledge Jada had alopecia. Yall stop. Beyonce continue being the queen you are. Every success comes with people trying to tear you down.
She had no right to be upset. Notice how she's been very quiet since the album came out? The only part of the song Beyonce sampled was THE BEAT. Nothing Kelis did was sampled. So whether out of legal obligation or mere courtesy, Beyonce did no wrong by not contacting Kelis first. If her vocals were sampled, that's different. In that case, Bey will be under moral obligation (not legal) to tell her about it beforehand. All Kelis had to do was LISTEN TO THE SONG FIRST, before making a fool out of herself.
As an artist, I understand how she feels. When it comes business, it's between Beyonce's business people and who owns the masters/publishing. I understand her frustration. I personally call the artists when somebody ask me for a sample. Her smoke should be directed at the Neptunes.
Regardless of the legalities and who owns whatever, there was literally nothing stopping Beyoncé from directly contacting Kelis prior or assuring credit to Kelis after, as a sincere gesture. Beyoncé has secured her platform, she had nothing to lose.

@@MayISpeak Kelis also said out of her mouth that she was addressing all 3 parties. While it does seem more of frustration should be directed towards the Neptunes, we don't know what type of problems she has with Beyonce behind the scenes. It's no secret that Beyonce loves being inspired by other people. Maybe Kelis is just tired of artists as big as Beyonce being inspired by her and getting all the credit for being "innovative" while she gets little to none. She definitely needs to take the Neptunes to court so that she can get what she's been owed from the beginning. As for Beyonce, I think all artists at this point should make an effort to contact all of the main parties who were involved in the creative process of making a song that is being sampled out of courtesy and decency, not just who owns the song. Some artists feel a way about their work being touched without their knowledge especially if they've had to face battles in the music industry behind the scenes.

The industry is crazy, however if Getting a song cleared is a process I’m sure Beyoncé isn’t doing the calling to have that done and if Kelis didn’t fight for her rights to it and isn’t the legal owner on paper and there isn’t a need to go to her. This is the business that so many ppl don’t understand but love to talk about.
Beyoncé has been in the industry for a long time, I’m sure if someone was sampling her shit she would want them to reach out and get the ok and then get the business handled behind the scenes after getting permission. It’s about respect for other black women and humility that’s the point Kelis is making. Beyoncé is not a girls girl and it’s the hypocrisy that is too much.
@@87Lohan sweetheart the difference is if people took Beyoncé’s samples then they would’ve gotten sued….BECAUSE SHE OWNS IT!! Kelis don’t own shit Pharrell and Chad do. Y’all going off at an emotional standpoint and I can promise u the industry don’t GAF about ur feelings. It’s business 🤷🏾♂️
I’m sure Beyoncé will reach out to her. Beyoncé is genuine and sweet. Kelis is hurt by this and I think Beyoncé will reach out to her, artist to artist to make amends.
@@kittensmitten3287 you just proved that kelis’s problem is not the rights. it’s beyoncé because she’s talking about her too personally she could’ve keep it business 😭😭🤣🤣🤣
@@jktealord and y'all will still miss the point. Kelis is in the industry. That one part of the bigger argument is not the issue. However, people who are smart will take note with that peace of info to know Beyonce is a snake. She move like one
Also…..Kelis released an album like Renaissance in 2010 called “fleshtone”, very dance Influenced, futuristic sound. Go listen to her song “Acapella”… kelis is always ahead of the curve.
Kelis should be able to get royalties, even as the original performer. Just need a knowledgeable lawyer. Something similar to the Dancehall/reggae artist Sister Nancy. For years she was sampled and not given royalties, this has since been rectified, as she not only has received "back" or retroactive royalties, but will continue to receive imminent future royalties.
Unfortunately a lawyer won't be able to help her. She didn't write or produce the original song. Also her voice isn't on Beyoncé song either. The only thing she could have gotten royalties for would be if her actual voice was in Beyoncé song. Beyonce actually went though the actual people's that wrote and produce the song. Now it would be great as far as common courtesy goes but she did credit her on the song Kelis just didn't know about it.
@@shereeseeverett That's not true. According to the documented credits she didn't write the song, her manager was a co-writer. When in reality she did help write the song and her manager had nothing to do with the song being made PERIOD. The same manager that was managing Pharrell at the same time.
@@LPAFilm Kelis ain't getting shit and y'all need to take off y'all capes 😂 Her little ass ain't big enough to go up against these billionaires. Beyonce is royalty 👑
I feel bad for Kelis she was tricked for signing her music rights away, I mean ultimately nobody forced her to sign the dotted line but it's messed up what they did to her and Beyonce should have known better!
It was bad luck. Beyonce at least had her father manage her from Girls Tyme, Destiny's Child, to solo for a bit. That's a lot of time to not only learn the business but from someone blood related who usually will look out for YOU differently than a stranger might. They might hinder you too, be overprotective BUT in the beginning of a career like this, that can BE a good thing. Kelis didn't have that. Startrak (Pharell/Chad) allegedly also played Teyana Taylor in the beginning, she also was a teenager, BUT even had her mother being present, and it still was allegedly shady business towards her. Some have alleged shady business by Pharell, it reminds me as if it is just like the LOX was "shelved" and had issues with P Diddy and Bad Boy until Jadakiss took matters in his own hands, and that's when Jadakiss, Lox blew UP. Had they just went with the flow, we may not know Jadakiss and Lox the way hip hop knows them from then until NOW.
I'm a Beyonce fan, since her Destiny Child era, and I agree with Kelis!!! Don't use someone else's work without giving the proper credit!!! And Beyonce could have reached out, she has done it multiple times with so many people!!!! Anyway!!! She's my queen and my diva, BUT I'm nobody's minion, if Beyonce is doing something wrong, I'll say something according to my own set of morals and beliefs!!! Just like when she wore that blood diamond from Tiffany's, that was not cool!!!!!!
I do appreciate Kelis pointing out some of the Beyonce brand discrepancies. I have felt weird about how her fans are allowed to troll and bully women like Keri Hilson (who ended up battling major depression) and you never hear a peep from her or some kind of public messaging to set the tone that she doesn't condone that behavior.. Actions are everything...
Remenber when they sent death threats to the lady sitting Courtside for talking to jz that lady asked beyonce to ask her fans to stop beyonce didn't open her mouth
I appreciate Kelis keeping it real! She made good points! Bey coulda came to her but she didn’t & probably didn’t feel she had to (ego) & that’s not women empowerment at all. If you gonna sing about it, be about it. All of this could have been avoided with a little mutual respect & common courtesy.
Beyonce is a LEGEND and I love her as much as everyone else. But ALL artists deserve respect & credit for their work. Regardless of who owns the masters, she should've reached out to Kelis out of respect. Period.
@@antasiashaw8815 You're missing the pt. She has her number. Out of *respect* as another woman in the industry she didn't think enough of her to tell her she was using her music. She used it, released it and Kelis found out about it with the rest of us. I love Bey too, but come on now.
@@antasiashaw8815 Beyonce got permission and credited her. Idk what she wants from Beyonce. She accused Beyonce of copying her when she screamed over a beat. I mean, that's a reach. Anyone can scream over a beat, and even if it was inspiration, Kelis is not the only to ever do everything and needs to be credited every time she thinks someone is doing something she did. I think they pick with Beyonce. Because they all sold out around the same time. But Beyonce career flourished. Lol. I am serious and I am not even a Beyonce fan like that.
@Mia Pratt thank you 👏🏾 people need to stop talking about feelings and look at the logistics. This is what happens when you are negligent in reading your legally binding contract that dictates how much money you make and the credit/control you get over your art.
Credited it or not on the album, Beyoncé could have called her. Kelis is a person with feelings who was screwed over multiple times in her music career as stated. If she did this to Beyoncé & Bey had something to say about it, the hive would have swarmed like their actually paid 😒
I think Kelis had a lot of feelings accumulated and this situation made her say everything and tell us exactly how she feels and she's allowed to do that, honestly, she's such an icon and people never give her credit, just her image is so iconic, especially in the R&B alt community yet people never talk about her impact as they should
@@teelove4443 ugh hello it's call common decentsy because at the end of the day Beyonce skipped protocol of asking for permission but then again she built her entire carrer off of sampling peoples sounds yo!
@@teelove4443 you’re just uncultured. Beyoncé stole a lot from the mixed-women at the time; including Amerie. Have a seat. There’s nothing original about Beyoncé. Her “work it out” curly wig was inspired by KELIS too.
I talk about the impact she’s made on my life, but most of these new age alt black girls should do their research. Kelis is one of the ones who paved the way for us to be free
I love Beyonce but I feel you on the lyrics and the rapping! I want to hear her sing too. And I felt like some of the lyrics were here kind of trying hard to have a viral moment or something..."drop it like a thottie" for instance. It just sounded weird coming from her.
Her review was 30 seconds. The album didn't really grew on her either lfmao 🤣. And she went immediately back to the contreversy. It's a messy blog just like the rest of them
I’m happy Kelis is speaking up, I’ve never liked the Neptunes especially when I found out how dirty they did Kelis. And I love that people aren’t attacking her for feeling how she feels 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Whew. When you think someone is a good person from what is being shown to the public, but only to be bamboozled by what someone else shares about who they really are. I'm just now finding out about the Neptune scandal. Kelis deserves better. Hollywood sure got a lot of tea to spill 🐸☕
For someone who cares so much about her artistry, her image and the messages she creates...she sure is purposeful about staying quiet on this. Kelis is right to call her out because some of the blame most definitely falls on her 🙄
To the beehives: Just because you a fan of Beyoncé doesn’t mean Kelis lied or didn’t make valid points. I’m glad Kelis spoke out!!! *an update after being stung so bad by the hives🥹* Listen Beehives: if the table’s turned y’all will tear Kelis tf up. YES U GUYS WILL. So don’t act like Bee & Pharell were not being petty towards Kelis. Now go back & stream Renaissance instead of coming here & try to alter ppl’s opinions & tell Kelis how to FEEL. Blessings & peace y’all. 🤭🙏🏻
If you’ve been following Kelis over the years, it’s hard not to believe her. Her energy speaks for itself; shes always been a very genuine spirit. Beyoncé and the Neptunes, not so much. I don’t know any of them, but I do trust my sense enough to stand in what I said.
Even when Rihanna changed up her hairstyle to the short look. I took one look at her and said “oh this is that Kellis’s haircut” but yet Rihanna was praised heavily for that look. Kellis has been setting trends for decades. She has always been a trend setter but she hardly gets praised for it. Ps- I only mentioned Rih because that is the example I could remember vividly.
I know what you're trying to do here, but I think hairstyle is a bad example just because overpaired of time styles have been recycled so she can't claim a hairstyle because somebody wore that hairstyle before she did. I don't know if you talking about the short bob or the shaved half head thing all these things were done many of times throughout history so I doubt this lady was the first person to come up with that particular style that you're talking about but like I said I think I get what you're trying to say but I don't think it's the same thing or in the same context. Also I've never heard Rihanna say oh that's my hairstyle I created that hairstyle I've heard other people claim or they're trying to copy Rihanna's hair do but I've never heard Rihanna came out her own mouth say oh this person is jacking my haircut.
@@Kickinthescience what does that have to do with hairstyle and even if she did she gave credit to Madonna she said it multiple times so what are you really trying to say she even said she looked up to Beyonce at least Rihanna gives credit to people and doesn't act like she isn't inspired by other people
You're absolutely right! If you listen to Kelis's album "Kelis was Here", you can clearly see where the inspiration of Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" came from whether it be Rihanna's style or the production on the album. Kelis is never given her props as far as being influential to a lot of black female artist. We talk about Beyoncé being the reason a lot of black female artists didn't maintain relevancy but there are several of them who had their careers sabotaged in order for Rihanna to be pushed to the forefront (ie. Christina Milian, Teairra Mari). And this is no hate or shade at Rihanna because she's one of my favorite artist but it's facts.
After listening to the album I think your opinion of it is based on the style of music that you prefer. If you are a Beyonce fan who heavily favours RnB this album is not for you (maybe few songs) however as a Beyonce fan who loves house and alternative music this is the body work I have been waiting for!!! It's a masterpiece ✨️ 🙌🏿 The transitions, the lighthearted lyrics and the feel good grove!! Also love her rapping on this 😍
This is a messed up thing to have happen to you. Kelis just lost her husband to cancer a few months ago. She deserves to be collecting royalties off of this song AND off of her first two albums. She is incredibly talented.
learn the business and put feelings away this is business. Beyoncé sampled PHARRELL and CHAD HUGO'S song. Do your homework. Kelis is not the writer and does not own the masters, therefore her permission was not needed, and she isn't owed any money for usage. Her bad business decisions are the issue here, and instead of making a vids discussing this as if she doesn't know how the business works, she should take a hard look at her business decisions and take some accountability for not owning her songs. She's talking like her and Bey are "friends". NO.
@@jktealord Girl can your head get any futher up that old heffas ass. She was a writer but did not get credited because she was deceived by The Neptunes. Business shouldn’t mean no morals. She’s entitled to express her feelings.
Team Kelis, all the way. I’m 38 and been a fan of Kelis since her first mainstream single. I remember watching The Box waiting for Get along with you to come on and it’s still a bop. Kelis is 100000% right! Bey should have at least had the common decency to reach out to Kelis. If anyone doesn’t understand that argue with your momma and not me.

@@Mya_water I’m not sure what so many people including yourself are finding hard to comprehend as Kelis was very articulate. A call would have been out of common courtesy. Especially considering they are peers, black women and Bey stay screaming about women empowerment. It was tactless for Bey to not even reach out especially considering how vocal Kelis has been about how the Neptunes’ did her dirty. If that doesn’t answer your question you have bigger things to worry about besides Kelis and Beyoncé.
I agree 1000% with Kelis. This isn't the first time Beyonce has done this and she is very well aware of the logistics in the music industry. Pharrell didn't make those songs alone. It took Kelis talents and artistry to bring them to life too. D-evils rarely look like strangers. I will not be listening or buying.
If Kelis wrote and produced the track herself. 1000% agree. If she just sang a song someone else wrote and produced. It’s not hers. She’s just an actress reading someone else’s lines. A mention would’ve been nice, but not needed.
And it’s okay. Skip it when you hear it on the radio, go to the bathroom when it plays in the club. Y’all are followers. Kelis knows the industry. It’s time she goes to the studio and bring it.
"Get along with you" by Kelis was my favorite song going into high school so I know that song very well. I had all Kelis albums and I stand with her 100% because she is one of the rare REAL ARTIST out there. Beyonce is starting to prove YEAR AFTER YEAR she is out of creativity. Destiny's Child was CREATIVITY PERSONIFIED. They stood on their own with their own style and sound. Beyonce when she first came out copied Tina Turner, Copied Josephine Baker at one point, and over the last decade in her solo career she has sampled many other artist music without permission. As an artist myself when someone uses your work you feel disrespected because you STOLE something I created. Pharrell really ought to be ashamed of himself especially because most people didn't even give him CREDIT for his 4 decades of work UNTIL "Happy" came out though he had been doing music since the 1990's! Beyonce is at a point where she feels like she can do what she wants without professionalism and it makes her more pathetic and not the Queen people assume. Absolute NO RESPECT for her. I CANNOT WAIT TO BEYOMCE RETIRES PERIOD. Her music does not have the flare because its been heard before BY OTHER ARTIST WHOVE DONE IT!
Solange actually has helped write a couple of Bey’s songs and she has even wrote for Kelly. I was on Google and Wiki browsing album credits a couple of weeks ago and was surprised to see that.
Ma’am! Kelis said what she said. I’m happy she said something. The music industry is a dark place. This makes me sick to my stomach. And being a fan of someone doesn’t mean you should turn a blind eye to them doing wrong. Kelis deserves her credit, recognition and a big apology.
I understand exactly what she’s saying & how she feels. If you worked hard & you were taken advantage of & didn’t get credit for your work It’s hurtful & frustrating. Dave Chappelle went through it, Kanye West went through it, Prince went through it & etc. It’s a slap in the face. Just my opinion 🤷🏿♀️
@Lakacia Lloyd say you had a baby & you didn’t go to court to get sole custody of your baby. The baby daddy took your baby and moved to a different state. The court says there’s nothing you can do because it’s his baby 2 and he has rights. Everyone knows what he did to you. He get married and his new wife knew the back story and still decided to play mother to your baby. Are you going to be angry with your baby daddy or the wife 2????
@Lakacia Lloyd She has a issue with all the above. You sound young & immature lol. So I don’t expect you to understand. It’s about morals, value & principles. Enjoy your day.
Now seriously if somebody sampled Beyonce's song, her whole team will come for them regardless..It just kills me how so many people are so one sided when it comes to certain people! Bey has stolen from a lot of artist, but don't nobody want to talk about that..Right is right, and if you're wrong you wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Day there are compiled videos of beyonce thievery. This is no new news beyonce is similar to drake. Take less famous artiste work and sell it as there's.
I’m just glad somebody from the industry is finally saying something. Cuz everybody and they mama act you just can’t say not one word about the Great Beyoncé 🤨🙄 It’s weird! And I love how KELIS was like “You talk about but I be about it!” And it’s true! Sure Beyoncé uses her music to speak on serious topics involving women but she just never speaks to the people unless a check is involved. Otherwise we never hear from her just on a whim or if she feels strongly about a something happening in society.
Please preach!!💯I’m so sick and tired of people thinking Beyoncé is perfect and can do no wrong. This is not the first time Beyoncé has stolen and taken credit from another artist.
I got upset awhile ago due to Ledisi being about to performing a song at an awards show and then saying Beyonce took the song and the spot to perform it at the show. I was so upset because this was at the height of Beyonce fame black in the day. I was just like, do you really need to take this song and perform it at this show instead of Ledisi. I thought I was the only one. This album doesn’t make sense to me. The lyrics in every song are all over the place and don’t mesh together. Break My Soul is the only song I like

She’s always sampling peoples stuff and she thinks cause she’s “The Queen” that she can do whatever. I’m glad Kelis is speaking up everyone else seems like they’re afraid.
Pharrell stay stealing people's music!!! That being said, I think the album is great. I miss the days of one song transitioning into the next track. And the fact that we got 3 back to back to back, (Cuff It/Energy/Break My Soul) is incredible. Especially Big Freedia at the end of Energy, right into Break my Soul, is Chef's kiss!!!
Good for Kelis, for not being afraid to speak out against Beyonce and her " Beehive "..She has gotten away with stealing lots of people song, look, sound, music etc..No, one ever calls her out or makes her pay for it..She did the same thing to Ann Marie and plenty of others. Her Beehive people, caused Kerri Hilson not to perform any more, out of fear..Someone, needs to put Beyonce and her Beehive in check...Great Job Kelis!!! I'm with you 💯
Agreed! I also think Beyonce isn't a nice person irl. She seems really fake and robotic. I mean she doesn't even respect her fans enough to friggin talk or interact with them or do interviews or anything. She's mute 24/7 but ppl worship her like a God. It's really sickening and disgusting. I'm glad Kelis had the guts to say how she feels. Fuck the Beehive, just a bunch of sheep just like Kelis said. Pathetic.
I agree And honestly the beehive are 90% bots ... so why be afraid ... they just like to steal the narrative by gas lighting and provoking arguments by saying outlandish stuff... Kelis can carry on ... they not real ppl they just paid bullies bots
I see Pharrell hasn't learned from when he, T.I., and Thicke got sued for stealing Marvin Gaye's music. Marvin's estate went right after them as soon as they heard that clip.
Crazy how foolish humans are over other humans JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE MONEY. Kelis has every RIGHT to her feelings, I’m over BEY. 😔😞Pharrell squirrel ass needs to be humbled.
The main thing is, obviously Kelis wrote her album but all the credits say Neptune's. I get it on production, but you can tell SHE wrote certain songs if not all her songs.. Question is, did she have a pub deal!? A bad one? That's the only reason I can see why they have the writing credits or she was told to sign something that wasn't on the up and up
From an interview I watched, Kelis said Pharrell and Chad verbally agreed with her that they would split the credits 3 ways (so 33% each) and so signed the contract without reading it, because she trusted them and relied on what they agreed. She didn’t notice her money was short because she was getting money from touring. When she later found out she’d been lied to, she confronted Pharell and he basically said ‘well you signed the contract’. So you can understand why she feels betrayed and taken advantage of. It’s an important life lesson not to trust anyone and to get an independent lawyer to review your contract before signing.
They did her dirty and screwed her out of her publishing not to mention they fucked her during the tasty era when arista folded and startrak was trying to leave their umbrella and go To universal..I was around back then so I know a lot of what went down..she has every right to feel like she does ..it’s P not even Chad ..man listen
Hold these artists accountable. With great privilege comes great responsibility…Beyoncé earned all the smoke that Kelis is giving , It is sad to see Beyoncé still hasn’t matured much even after having her own babies because this is not rocket science or something one has to be told at her age, it’s a choice. It doesn’t matter like Kelis said though because it is what is, Pharrell did and still doing what so many unscrupulous entertainers do. I’ve always preferred Kelis as an artist, she never played it safe and always been so secure with herself.

Just a clarification Beyoncé sampled Kelis’s song “Milkshake” not “Get Along With You.”
clarification? you have a whole video based on non-sense, Beyoncé sampled drums from a 1999 house sound base song, Girl, I used to like your content, but this is literal hypocrisy, and not just your video, but so many are just talking about this, Black Women hurt each other, every ethnicity continues to do this over and over, the difference is that white people get away with it, but us? we are the minority, we should empower one another, not do thiiiiis, this whole video is just.

That’s why you have to own your songs then that won’t happen she doesn’t own the rights
She’s NoT. Especially if she doesn’t own her own master. She should be mad at herself for conducting poor business.

🇿🇦
I have yet to hear Bey's song - or album - but as regards Brenda's music, yes, I've heard some of her songs sampled by others and have often wondered whether she or her estate ever received royalties from it. Brenda was more than just a singer, she was an icon. I have heard a LOT of South African sounds, a lot of West African sounds, too, liberally sampled by the West. I doubt any of the original artists ever got credit or compensation.

I think Kelis is absolutely right in the way she feels. It's HER song, her voice, her face, her talent and her artistry on it, regardless of what the paper work says. She MADE the song. Even if the Neptunes signed off on it, it is just common decency to appreciate the person who made the art.

Since you claim to know the industry and how sampling works, why should Beyoncé call kelis over a beat Kelis didn’t create?
As an artist, I understand how she feels.
When it comes business, it's between Beyonce's business people and who owns the masters/publishing.

Do y’all know how sampling works? I suggest you do some research. Paid some respect over some la la las that Beyoncé sang? Since when did kelis become the inventor of the words la la la? Because that’s what this case boils down to
Ya'll keep saying that Kelis is mad at the wrong person when she addressed all three and called out Pharrell and Chad the most. She called Pharrell a thief and Chad an amoeba, but y'all only heard Beyonce's name because God forbids if she gets criticized or held accountable for anything.
They treat her like a God. It's so weird
Yes I literally just said this . She barely talked about beyonce . Her smoke was clearly with neptune. She said beyonce is apart of the problem , because beyonce has done this to her before.

Kelis should have known better not to have the same lawyer as Pharrell. She has bad business sense.

Otherwise we never hear from her just on a whim or if she feels strongly about a something happening in society.
I've often Wondered why they're all scared of her. Something weird is going on in that industry
Everyone knows you already. Ijs 🤷
Girl shut up all I see is hate for Beyoncé. Rihanna is the worship one
@@okafornnenna9769 Because her and her ppl have allegedly ended a few careers. And ppl in the industry don’t want it to happen to them so they stay on hush mouth.
This is the first album by Beyonce that I just don't care for. I like Break My Soul and that's it. It wasn't made for me though and I can respect that. It was made for a different vibe/scene than what I ever typically occupy. Curious to know what other lifelong fans think about it too though.
I thought I was the only one. This album doesn’t make sense to me. The lyrics in every song are all over the place and don’t mesh together. Break My Soul is the only song I like
I agree. Not for me either.
Break My Soul is the weakest song, Alien Superstar is 🔥
Empressive this is the first time I completely agree with you on something lol. Literally EVERYTHING you said about Renaissance is EXACTLY how I feel 💁🏽♀️💯 It’s like…. I was listening and waiting for something but I never got it 🤷🏽♀️ Most of the songs lead to nowhere. I kept hearing everybody else’s sound and musical influence except for her own (yet again 🙄😒) Literally the only songs that stood out to me was plastic off the sofa, Virgos groove, cuff it and one other one and that’s it 🤷🏽♀️ Literally everything else was just sounds and random lyrics. I hope the other two ACTS are better than this 💁🏽♀️
You've describe ALL of her music as far as I'm concerned. She's overrated.
🤣 @Sophia Elayne
@@sophiaelayne9984 Definitely 💁🏽♀️ I haven’t truly vibed with her music since her I am Sasha fierce album and that was 15 years ago 🤷🏽♀️💁🏽♀️😩🤦🏾♀️
Why is it okay for Lizzo/Bruno to take influence from funk eras but Bey is not allowed to take influences?
@@korykent5645 Because she does it ALL the time throughout her whole entire career. I mean…. That’s kinda what Kelis and a lot of other artists over the years have been complaining about. She’s the bigger star and she bites another artist (that’s not so popular) style, flow, cadence and sounds and morph into her own and then get praise for it like she did it herself but don’t want to give credit or a shoutout to the artists she stole it from 🤷🏽♀️🥴😒 Meanwhile Bruno Mars is naming the people who have influenced him, he works with them and shouts them out ALL the time 💁🏽♀️ It’s about being humble and respecting the people who inspired you…. instead of acting like they don’t exist that’s all 💁🏽♀️
“Not Chad is spineless Im surprised he can keep his neck up”. I’m screaming; Kelis is hilarious 😂
Queen! 😩😭🤣
Love me some Kelis
Her read is classy
One of the funniest ish i've heard this year LOL
Hilarious!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Beyoncé has a long history of not giving other artists credit for the work she claims to be “inspired” by. All because you are a bigger star doesn’t mean you could just take from other artists
…and before you crazy ass stans come on here talking sh** please understand that you could be a fan of a celeb and still hold them accountable for their actions. At the end of the day, Beyoncé isn’t God, she eats, sh*ts and sleeps like everyone else. If this was any other person stealing from others y’all would have a completely diff reaction. Idc who she is, don’t take from other ppl if you’re not gonna give credit to them
But she did give her credit. She just didn’t notify her. She’s not the only one that wasn’t notified!! Big Frida didn’t kno until “Break My Soul” was released, but she was happy & honored. Why is that? Hate will always be hate…🤷🏽♀️
She gave credit
@@kekephillips1768 right because Beyonce can do no wrong!! Kind of reminds me of the time she was being investigated for bad business practices or the time she did a private party for a dictator then told the world that she didn't know who he was!!! Stop the 🧢 but wait we're hating on her right!!??!!
Girl the flee hive still refuses to believe that Bey is addicted to plastic surgery, so 🤷 🙄 In their eyes, her shat don't stank.
Well said
"Ugh, cause I'm happy" I fell out 😂 And she's totally on point about seeing thru Beyonce's fake girl empowerment. Go back to that elevator footage, who was the one throwing hands at Jay Z and standing up for themselves? Solange, not Mrs. Meek Beyonce. Speak your truth Kelis!
Since everyone’s listening to Beyoncé heavily dance inspired album, I also encourage people to listen to Fleshtone, Kelis’ dance inspired album, a great album, it’s very underrated.
I will ☺️
Also her song 4th of July is an amazing dance track that I will never get tired of!!!
Kelis has the right to feel how she feels and say what she wants. Beyoncé isn’t above criticism , she’s not a god, she’s not a queen she is a regular artist and human being
Beyoncé Stan’s act like no one is allowed to have a problem with Beyoncé or what Beyoncé does. New flash Beyoncé is human and anyone can say whatever about her
Yeah Kelis has that right just like Bey and the Neptunes had the right to complete disregard her bitter ass 😂
Right like how do you make a video about Kelis and yet dismiss her at the end… she legit said what she said.
This!! That’s why I’m no longer part of the “Beehive”… it’s toxic and celebrity worshiping. I can appreciate her as an artist but she’s not above reproach🤷🏽♀️
You're worshipping Kelis and a God.
@@LALIZ10793 don't nobody know how to take this ISH yo, this uncharted territory ain't NOBODY been this BOLD in our lifetime LOL
They have and quietly sued because they could and WON even against Beyonce, BUT that didn't mean they cussed her out over NON Legal issues and stood 10 toes down on their principles raised. Folks are flushed LMAO
Now when Azealia said the same things everyone rolled their eyes. Every artist deserves their due.
Edit: Heard the song and learned more about the situation. Kelis’ beef should only be with Pharell. Plus the interpolation is almost unnoticeable on the track.
I agree but it's mainly how she says it lol
It’s ableism, colorism and bias
Right!
@@BlueOrchards True true. I don’t always agree with her hot takes but she pulls no punches lol.
I’m proud of Kelis, too many people so afraid to speak out against people they deem higher ups than them. Beyoncé wouldn’t accept that disrespect, so I’m happy, Kelis stood up. BTW Beyoncé been off, since dangerously in love album, people just geeked over her because it’s popular to be a fan 🙄
Beyoncé is the Coldplay of Urban Music. Sell outs. I still listen to her older stuff up to Love On Top.
I agree
Sasha Fierce is my favourite album ❤️❤️🔥
@@ProximaCentauri88 no sense whatsoever
@@chi8772 You must have a horrible taste in music, FANATIC.
Beyoncé is to blame because she claims to have so much creative control over her projects and she knows right from wrong. She isn’t new to the game.
Same nobody puts real work into the whole album the whole body of work no more
Good for Kelis, for not being afraid to speak out against Beyonce and her " Beehive "..She has gotten away with stealing lots of people song, look, sound, music etc..No, one ever calls her out or makes her pay for it..She did the same thing to Ann Marie and plenty of others. Her Beehive people, caused Kerri Hilson not to perform any more, out of fear..Someone, needs to put Beyonce and her Beehive in check...Great Job Kelis!!! I'm with you 💯
Ignorant ass take.
I used to like A Marie until Boyence came along
I guess, the other three comments were rude, ignorant and disrespectful..That's too bad 👎🏻 The "Beehives " need to go away and get a life..
Facts!
That's dumb because it's a beat they didn't even use her vocals
Beyonce has done this sooo many times its not even funny...but thats a whole nother conversation! Kuddos to Kelis for speaking up
The main thing is, obviously Kelis wrote her album but all the credits say Neptune's.
Honestly embarrassing for pharelle to have no shame in taking somone money right in their face and disrespect kelis. All so he can dress badly
Wow I can't imagine how thirsty you must be waiting on a kellis project..she ain't did shit since 2003 which makes her non existent as an artist but hey the thirst is real .
ONLY the secure ones KNUCK if YOU BUCK! Privately or publicly,
As Nas DID rap on ETHER, to Jay Z;
"Well life is hard, hug me, don't reject me
Or make records to disrespect me, blatant or indirectly"
Ether was SO ILL. Even the BEAT was boxing JAY LMAOOOOOO
This video is Kelis's ETHER for Kelis. She tired of what she perceives as SUBS, just not on wax.

Sheepish mindsets HATE to see IT.
Too bad she didn't have the same smoke for Nas when he was physically abusive to her.

This isn’t The first time Beyoncé has sampled or stolen someone else’s song or creative ideas. Kudos to Kelis for standing up for herself and hopefully she can own her own masters.
Hopefully? Hopefully? The woman has terrible business habits. She needs to get off the farm and find a lawyer.
