I have to say that I recently got a renewed Galaxy Book Go 5G with the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 and I'm having a blast with the laptop. Of couse, is not the fastest thing, I already own a gaming laptop. What I was looking for was a good performance for browsing and remoting in to my other computers. The battery on this thing is ridiculously long lasting. For context, I used to use a Chromebook to remote in to my devices because of the battery life but since I got this one, I don't really need the Chromebook anymore. Also, Windows on Arm has matured enough not to bother running emulated applications. Definitely not for gaming but its a really good laptop. The only thing that's trash is the screen, that TN screen is not the best choice but again, it works.

I have the 5G version from Verizon with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD and I have none of the issues you have claimed. In fact side by side mine out performs a clients 8GB RAM 10th Gen i3 CPU in performance. But, I will say I've worked in IT for 20 years doing everything from DevOps, Site Reliability Engineer, and Director of Commercial Services for an MSP. 90% of my apps run under native ARM just like Windows 11. I specifically only get apps that support AARCH64/ARM for Windows for that reason. The biggest App I use that doesn't support that is Greenshot and I'm working to compile it as an AARCH64/ARM for Windows version right now.

That's because 5G version has Snapdragon 8cx instead of 7c in the wifi version as the Soc, which delivers much better overall performance.

Got it with Windows 11 ARM with full support for any x32 x64 window program with translation layer and it is very effective what Microsoft has done. For basic programs to run it is very hood machine for the price and I completely disagree with conclusion to AVOID it especially for students or kids Also,it will be more and more apps available gor Windows ARM and I don't feel much slower performance now with apps like VLC for Windows ARM or for Windows x64.So,for students on low budget gor basic tasks but with much better capabilities than any Chromebook it is very good choice and battery life easily 9-10 hours

The reason I made this video was because I could only find positive reviews of it online saying that it’s “perfect” for students, kids, etc. However, that did not mirror my experience with the device and I wanted to point out the flaws of it. I believe it has utility to work as a fine laptop, but compared to other options on the market (especially used) it doesn’t come close. I would much prefer an HP Elitebook, Dell Latitude, etc for $200-$400 with an 8th gen i5, double the ram, double the storage, and a better display. Or even a Ryzen 5 which could be used for light gaming.
Obviously many people still aren’t comfortable buying used laptops, but buying used is where I tend to lean. And I can say I’m “saving the environment” by buying used lol.
This review also only covers the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 processor. I notice that the Snapdragon 8cx in the 5G model of this laptop is much faster, but that version costs more.
I’m glad you’re enjoying your laptop. This is merely a video providing a different perspective from the vast majority of reviews.

Sorry but you can't use benchmarks designed for x86/x64 CPUs on an ARM CPU, as they are simply way too different to compare; you should've used Antutu or 3DMark benchmark for Android/Linux ARM version, and you could only compare to other ARM chips.
If you want an actual, raw performance comparison, you could've tried putting it next to the old Celeron laptop and open multiple TH-cam videos, maybe try muti-tasking or simply using the ALT-Tab functionalities between apps/windows to really stress out the CPUs in a real-life scenario, I can guarantee you the Celeron chip would probably get stuck in the first step. Synthetic benchmarks never paint the whole picture.

    1. Windows has had support for ARM since Windows 8, this is the reason they made the " tile" design everyone hated -- they wanted Windows to run on mobile and desktop, this was originally called Windows RT -- it was reserved to 32-bit ARM I believe, however.
    2. That is not what a limited instruction set processor is. A limited instruction set processor still works on things at the same time, that is why they have multiple cores. The difference you might be mistaking this for is that there are (at least currently) no hyper-threaded aarch64 processors.... Which means that each core can only do one thread at a time.... Which even with one core, there is asynchronous programming -- which allows for one thread to be used for multiple things at the same time (though the process will switch between the different instructions during downtime, meaning that things don't happen in parallel it is more like the CPU using any free time it has to return to the other tasks.
" Instructions" are a list of special key-words that have a (physical) binary representation permanently built into the processor. For example, there is the `jmp` instruction, which will jump your processor to a different routine. These are called via a binary file assembled by the processor's Assembler. My personal experience has primarily been with the Netwide assembler.
Over the years, these instruction sets expanded to facilitate way more possibilities using way more instructions. The typical instruction set in a desktop computer today is the 64-bit instruction set, or the amd64 instruction set. (32-bit is called i386, Intel 386, AMD made 64-bit processors first so they are called amd64). A limited instruction set processor saves power by not utilizing the full instruction set required by a desktop computer. As a result, the processors are a lot less complicated, they are smaller, and have less of those premade instructions to implement.
The shortcoming to this, however, is that there are more limited capabilities when it comes to these processors -- pragmatically, because they have less instructions. Of course, there is also the compatibility with the established amd64 applications -- which linux has figured out, but Windows does not.
    3. Thank you for a thorough analysis of the screen. Think that broke the deal for me hehe
    4. Your processor comparison was between a limited instruction set computer and a 64-bit computer. That is not apples to apples. I see that you understand this, but I would like to explain why your test got these results for some clarity. The limited instruction set means that the CPU has to do more tasks to run the same thing, because there are less convenient instructions to do those tasks more quickly. You aren't comparing frequency or performance here, you are comparing the fundamental design of an aarch64 chip versus the fundamental design of an amd64 chip. A better test for this would be to do the inverse; find an application designed for aarch64 and then try it on the amd64 chip, rather than finding an application designed for amd64 and running it on the aarch64 chip... Because aarch64 has a pretty serious disadvantage running software made for a different computer that was adapted to work on the processor. Obviously the snapdragon is a lot faster than the Celeron... Just not when running a CPU benchmark designed for processors with complete instruction sets.
Consider that this same processor in a Chromebook would do remarkably well. You weren't testing the hardware, but the software's compatibility with the hardware. An easy mistake to make when doing this with an ARM laptop, completely understandable considering how big of a problem software compatibility is in this context.
    5. Other than the slight misunderstanding on ARM, I really found this review helpful and informative. Thank you for a detailed overview! Seems like this thing would be pretty decent under linux if it weren't for the display. Considering the review, your conclusion and advice is also pretty apt, I would say -- well done.
    6. Had to come back. That's not emulation, it isn't pretending to be a 64-bit processor, there is a compatibility layer which processes 64-bit instructions into aarch64 instructions. I can't believe I just edited this just to correct the use of the word " emulation." I'm going outside to eat some grass.

Dude, you are the typical layman of tecnology gamer, who will buy this notebook will use for home work, study and programming (with is my case), I could run docker, nodejs, VSCodium and dotnet in this computer, and it won't lag. It will lag if you use for gaming (With is not the purpuse of it) and graphic tasks (Like edit video, images and vectors)

    • @riklaunim
      @riklaunim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

A lot of SoCs won't "lag" if you use it for light distributed tasks. And with time that docker and nodejs will start asking for storage, ram and so on. With how Ryzen U-series laptops went down in price it's less and less of a value to look for WoA devices. And image editing is mostly CPU, video editing depending on action or task can be either CPU or accelerated by iGPU (even a weak one). If a brand new laptop can't do basic tasks then it's not really that good isn't it? All current Snapdragons have the performance of Intel chips from few generations behind while priced like modern chips. Maybe Nuvia designs change something but that's still far away. And if you have 4GB version then sorry but it's a joke.

    @stevenalexander4721 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I actually have the 5G model and here are my takes on it.
    1. Games. Nobody, especially gamers, is buying this to play games on unless they are idiots.
    2. Price. I do think that at full price it's overpriced, which is why I bought a refurbished one from Walmart.
    3. OMG! A laptop made out of plastic! Say it isn't so! I find people who complains about the materials it's made out of are just too nitpicky and expect the best of everything. Here's the thing, all the laptop's I have ever owned since I first started buying them in 2009 have been made of plastic and it's what most laptops were made out of before many companies started using different metal materials like aluminum and many others. Get over it.
    4. Screen Qality. I do agree that the screen quality isn't the best, but most people are probably just using this for light work, especially college students who just want something to type notes on, do a little homework, write an essay, and light browsing. Also, if you are like me and purchase a refurbished one and can afford it, you can replace the screen panel. FYI, I didn't bother replacing the screen panel since this is just going to be a light on the go computer.
    5. Speed. Again, back to number 1. You are not in competition with the Flash. This is geared as a budget laptop on the go for doing light things and not heavy things like gaming. You don't need top of the line CPU's and GPU's for light work and if you break it trying to do those things then that's on you and not the laptop.
    6. Apps. I have had no trouble installing and using any of my everyday apps on the ARM processor because as I've said repeatedly, it's for light work.
    7. I also see people claiming that it's constantly overheating while doing light work. I've not had this issue at all. So, either these users are lying about what they were really doing with it, or they are just one of the unlucky ones to actually receive a faulty product. If it's the latter I'm sorry you experienced this but please tell me, you got the warranty. FYI, just so people know, warranties are designed based upon what could go wrong within a set time limit.
    8. Battery Life. This is a big selling point, especially for students who need a laptop that will see them through the day for about 3 to 5 hours of constant use. I usually only recharge this every other day.

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! As far as gaming goes... probably nothing. Unless you count the basic games like solitaire in the Microsoft store. Many games don’t support ARM yet and if you do get a game to work, you won’t get above 30 frames even at the lowest settings. Plus you will probably experience other issues as well. I saw one review where it wouldn’t enter full screen.
I didn’t include gaming benchmarks on here because it’s not meant for gaming. But there are used laptops in the $300-$400 price range that have better cpus, more ram, and more storage, and can game. Example: HP Elitebooks with Ryzen 5 series. Those are great values and can handle light gaming.

Arm and risc outperform Intel 2-1 when code optimized, same speed. I love arm! I bought these for the CPU. Well built but SSD or emmc soldered...bad. I'm a 45 year veteran programmer PhD. I will not (willingly) buy an Intel or AMD again. For PC relatively, re-entrant, self modifying code (ai) this does what Intel can't. This is a raspberry pi (-broadcom) on steroids! I had hoped you were reviewing the Snapdragon 8c 5G version but yours was weak to start with. Your review was outdated even before you purchased the device. You have 4GB of memory and Windows 10. Most Android phones come with a lot of memory for a reason - this would fare any better if it were running Android. I had a Surface Pro running on 4GB RAM and a mobile Core i3 and the thing was sh#t running most applications. I have played around with the T-Mobile version of the Galaxy Book Go 5G with Windows 11. Most 32-bit programs run just as fast as on a regular PC. 64bit will run but depends on the complexity of the program. The biggest advantage for running Windows on ARM will be for the superior battery life that's worth everything if you're a student or mobile professional. I plan to get this laptop simply because I am a mobile professional and need that long battery life but also the always connected 5G and fast boot up.

    • @jayhawk6029

I’m sure the 5G variant of this laptop is better, at least I hope it is given the bump in price. I’ve heard windows 11 is better for ARM, which is good. I have to preface that I’ve never personally tried windows 11. My 4790k based PC doesn’t support win 11 and while I’m sure it’s a good OS I have a deep affinity for my current PC hardware and the performance it brings is more than satisfactory.
This was simply a review of the base model of this laptop, since it’s the cheapest version I would assume it garnered the most attention/sales. This is why I made the video because I found this specific model to be less than adequate. Therefore, I wanted to make a video going over the negatives because most of the videos reviewing this laptop were all way too positive.
I hope you’re enjoying whichever laptop you have. The only thing that matters is the end user experience.

wait until he finds out he was comparing a mobile chip to an x86 Celeron...bro, x64 and x86 processors will always get higher single core scores than arm, cause arm verry seldomly uses only one core to do anything, it's always split across however many cores the chip has. I came looking for an honest review and found your genuine opinion on hardware you lack knowledge on.

I realize it wasn’t an apples to apples comparison. I referenced that laptop because I found it in a cabinet at my old shop and decided to try it out while I was recording for this video. I shouldn’t have brought speed or a single benchmark into the comparison. My basic point was I more satisfied or maybe just equally satisfied with a random old laptop from the early 2010s. My assessment still remains the same for this laptop, as I found it to be poor value compared to other options at the time.

Thank you for the support! And I’m glad you’re enjoying the laptop. Like I said it’s just not made for me. And I recently picked up a Dell Latitude for my company to bring on trips and that thing is brilliant. $300 used and it out competes anything new in that price range. But I also prefer buying used tech rather than new. And I can tell people that I’m being “environmentally friendly” by buying used haha.

@@jayhawk6029 Np, OK cool, but why we should AVOID it, ?? I have to use it as my main laptop from now.
But when you say "AVOID THIS LAPTOP", Means that I bought a garbage, making me so disappointed in what I have..
Windows 11 works great on the galaxy book go its not SLOW, its normal speed. its slow sometimes when you have a lot of things open up but I got to use the programs that I couldn't use on windows 10, windows 11 has support for 64 bit programs on arm such as: Adobe Photoshop works great (I only got a driver error pop up, when I close it the program runs normally, Office works well too, I could connect it to a printer, I could watch you tube,Netflix and amazon prime Firefox is much faster than chrome on this laptop probably chrome isn't optimized for ARM yet .You could run your 64 bit programs on win 11 on the galaxy book go because win 11 has better optimization than win 10. I couldn't install a program when this laptop was running win 10 but I got to install it when upgraded it to win 11 and when using Firefox too you can have a lot of tabs open with no problems, its just fast compare to chrome. You could even do some light gaming on here. I will bounce out from performance now, It has a really good mic built into the top near the webcam which sounds great for Skype,Zoom and some video calls too, you can expand the storage from a memory card, great built quality and design, it supports Dolby-Amos, HAS A 180 DEGREES HINGE and excellent battery life combine with its lightness. It has Samsung apps preinstalled on it such as Samsung Smart-things, Samsung Gallery which you could access the Photos from which are on your Samsung Galaxy phone and quick share you can send files from you Galaxy phone to the PC.
On Geek Benchmark it got somewhere around 560 on Single Core and 1560 on Multi-Core CPU..
I was also able to connect my phone to this laptop via USB Screen Mirror
you could also add a USB Hub to this providing more ports.
Edit: I didn't know that it wasn't made for me before I purchased it and only thought that is was Samsung Brand and Upgradable RAM, Didn't know that it has a mobile processor since it was more expensive (349$) than some cheaper windows one (that costs less than ($300) and had 4gb ram with 64 GB storage (this was at the store at bestbuy), was not looking to go over $400. so I decided to buy this one not knowing what I would freaking get for this price, Lol, thought it was going be something like the alternative. haha../

@@blandigaming755 That’s good that your enjoying! Don’t overthink it. I’ve been building custom PCs and repairing phones/laptops for 9 years, so I have just have my own set of expectations. I bought this merely to see how the ARM processor performed and I was underwhelmed. Compared to other laptops in the price range, new and used it wouldn’t be on my list. ARM will become a lot better on windows over time. Apples new M1 chips (ARM based) are amazing and they are doing a really good job of supporting them.

Jokes aside, great review. I do have an important question for you because I'm buying this thing for one reason and one reason alone - I need to setup a VPN on my XBOX and I need a cheap laptop to do it. My question is does the Snapdragon 7C Gen2 have a built in wireless hotspot connectivity? In other words, can I share the connection without having to buy a dongle? I can get one this laptop for $129.99 but it's worthless to me if it doesn't support wireless network sharing.
Thanks for any help or insight you can provide! Keep hustling!

About 18 months ago I got one of these, mainly as I needed a Windows device with 4G built in, but I was also curious about Windows on ARM
I went with the model with 8GB RAM and 4G LTE
And about a month later I decided to get one for my sister (I went with the base model, which I was able to get for just under £300 (I think it was in the region of £285))
Both of the laptops I purchased came with Windows 11 pre-installed
My sister got on well with hers, until the screen stopped working (when it was out of warranty)
The other one hasn’t suffered any hardware malfunctions, but it has developed Windows update issues (probably down to it not having been used for so long), and unfortunately a factory reset only made things worse, it didn’t fix the problem, I ended up having to manually install updates in a specific order to sort it out

This is my first video review of a product and therefore I don’t have the beautiful B roll shots, but I wanted to make a video on this laptop, so I tried.
Also I want to clarify a few things:
    Correction:
I stated that the text on CPU Z looked blurry due to emulation, but I have noticed the app varies from computer to computer. On my windows desktops it looks fine, but on laptops for some reason it tends to be blurry (it probably just looked worse because of the bad screen quality). Either way the lack of support from app developers is still a big issue.
    Clarification:
I mentioned I did not like the screen, but I said it looked fine given the price. However this display is worse than the 10 year old laptop I compared it to and that’s pretty unacceptable because that laptop was also a budget laptop back in the day. So I’m changing the screen quality to an F.
    Buy something else:
Save yourself the hassle of dealing with this laptop and find yourself a nice used laptop on eBay. Dell Latitudes, HP Probooks / Elitebooks, and other laptops with 8th gen i5 cpus all go for $200-$400 on eBay. They’ll be faster, you get more ram, more storage, and a better display. Plus 8th gen i5s are supported by Windows 11, so if you want windows 11 that option is available.
