That build quality would drive me crazy, it's good to spend a little extra on that for sure. Thanks for the review Lon, these ARM laptops are really interesting to me, and how they're starting to shake up the market. Fun to see something fresh once in a while!

Arm is getting popular because of the battery life it gives.
Think about it, if every few years you upgrade your laptop, you are spending A LOT of money because laptop prices are always getting higher, but Arm solves this issue as it is not battery intensive cpu, the battery doesn't degrade as easy, cheaper and you are more likely to keep it for longer.
Chromebooks are about $150 and my brother has had his for 3 years and very satisfied for browsing, media and even content creation and coding

Apple: We will have all our computer portfolio switched to ARM in 2 years, and here, get these 3 well built computers to start with. Also our entire software stack will be optimized for ARM on day 1 as well. Also our emulator and CPU is so good that it actually runs 3rd party x86 apps better than Macs with Intel CPUs.
Microsoft and 3rd party vendors: Here you can see a low end computer with an ARM CPU that has the power of a 4 year old low end computer. Also not even all our 1st party software is optimized for it. By the way 64-bit apps cannot be run on it at all. Also if you are a developer, some of our most popular frameworks like .Net Framework are not available for it either, so it is kind of hard to port your apps to it actually.
Microsoft executives: Hmm, I wonder why ARM Windows PCs are not popular 🤔

For portability/price this would be hard to beat, share your charger with your phone and epic battery life. Clearly aimed at mobile working students for office apps. I don't know any other £400 laptop that would do that.

The price point makes this device very interesting. I hope this will lead to more manufacturer to make more low cost arm machines. In a lot of ways this arm machines feel like early Chromebooks which had a small audience.

    It's a 14 inch netbook, that's what it is.
Great battery life, meant to only browse the internet, not the best build quality, ridiculously cheap. It's a netbook for 2021

This is a great review that saved me from making a mistake. I was looking at some discounted Samsung Galaxy Book Go 14 and thinking "wow what value with performance, efficiency, and battery life." But as soon and you touched the center of the laptop and showed the flex my initial impressions of value dropped fast. I think if they called it Windows ARM and worked on the store front their Microsoft could offer a better experience, but any nonexpert is going to have problems. Transcoding would be such a waste of that added performance. The main things that I like about the Galaxy Book Go, I can't even take advantage of. A processor that is over twice as powerful on multicore performance of a run of the mil Celeron N4020, but what good is that performance if you can't put it to good use. No, I don't want to pay be a beta tester. If it is going to have great battery life: it requires a good keyboard, trackpad, and screen to make it a complete package for the on the go worker.

Picked one of these up when Best Buy recently was unloading them for $78. Watching this and typing this on it now. For this price, and Windows 11 now having much better support for ARM, this thing is a steal. Perfect little writing and light surfing laptop. I would not want to pay more than $100 for it though. I had no issues installing all my 64bit software I want to use on it- so now this is a nice sleek little laptop I can keep next to the bed. The real bonus is it's instant on like a phone, but just used occasionally I should rarely ever have to plug it in. It's easier to browse than my phone, manage a few remote desktop connections, email and some writing. Anyone buying this thing for much over the price I got it for, expecting it to do heavy lifting is not going to be happy, but for this use, I couldn't be happier.

For the compatibility thing I figured I'd throw this out there. Developers see the tide coming in. I think most of us understand that ARM is here to stay and I picked this unit up (after watching this fine review) so that I would have access to an ARM Windows machine to start poking around with. The company I work for is also planning on investing in ARM Windows devkits Q1 2022. So just throwing it out there that compatibility WILL get better.

I don't understand the 4G RAM. If it had 8 GB (at the very least, as an option), I'd say it's an instant get, but 4G is simply insufficient for web browsing, period. You open like 5 tabs and MS Teams, and it's game over. And that's what you should've looked at, not just opening a single tab and checking scrolling speed.

I picked up the Acer Chromebook with the Snapdragon 7c in it. It's been fine and is probably (in my humble opinion) a better platform at the moment for low priced ARM devices.
I hope Windows gets things sorted. I'm sort of hoping that my next machine will be a mid range ARM based machine. I have a powerful gaming PC and a windows laptop supplied by my employer. I want my own laptop to be thin with great battery life... just need a touch more performance.

Only reason getting a Windows on ARM laptop is the battery life. Otherwise, even a Pentium does the work better. However, this is a much, much more affordable option compared to the normal Windows on ARM laptops which is how it should be. I hope Microsoft does a better optimisation and get developers to work on the ARM architecture.

    • @see-sharp
      @see-sharp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well the problem is that Windows runs very bad on ARM architecture (same goes for most proprietary software). This laptop on native Linux OpenSource apps vs entry level x64 laptops THAAAT would be a fair battle.

4 gig of ram is criminal in 2021. What ever positives this laptops has is immediately negated by such low ram. Why even bother making such a product? Also, while being able to add an SD card is nice, they are generally slower, especially with low-end PCs. IMO SDs are not a good substitute for having additional storage. Buyers should just be able to upgrade the internals. Honestly sad to see how PC makers are treating customers with all these soldered on everything. Cyberlink PowerDirector and Libre Office with no slow down, hiccups or compatibility issues. Also, running a firewall. Have more programs on it but that's off the top of my head. @Tano I have an AMD, Intel and ARM. The ARM is the best experience. Just got the intel, went with Samsung again they optimize the hell out of their laptops. Wasn't and Intel fan but Samsung took control of the experience, that part is obvious. I like it, and they made it so I could turn the fan off if I wanted silence. I love AMD chips but made the mistake of buying Lenovo. So it's my least favorite laptop.

@@clientinboxllc2865 Yes, the Galaxy Book S (ARM) is a good device, and if you understand the limitations, it is a great machine. I use PWA with Edge Chromium, and I have a workaround for Dropbox integration, etc. However, WOA potential has been limited by MS plodding progress, and those of us supporting this form deserve better.
Not sure I would recommend the Galaxy Book Go as there are better Chromebooks at a price.
