Thanks for putting this out there I only recently found out I had to register my EV to drive in the congestion zone. Almost got caught out the other week when I drove in just a few minutes after the cut off, blissfully unaware of the rule. Very suspicious of the line that the congestion charge cameras can't automatically detect your car's eligibility while the Ulez ones can. Bit of a scam to catch out the unwary IMO. I also think the fine should be dropped on appeal if it's a first 'offence'.
It’s definitely to catch you out. I have been trying to register an EV but TFL are doing all they can to make it difficult. There’s absolutely no reason why the number plate recognition cameras can’t see that the vehicle is an EV. The DVLA database has it registered as an EV but TFL want you to pay to register and upload V5 docs.
Update, finally managed to register the EV, so now when I take the wife for appointments in central London I drive around for an hour rather than paying for parking. I’ve got my £10 registration fee back easily and on a winner each week. Shove your congestion charge.
Best thing in my opinion is stay well clear of London and bigger cities in England, even if on a push bike, as traffic is appalling. Now up in my neck of the woods on lesser wide roads, lesser containment of the public and more open fields, no restrictions apart from speed limits apply. So we drive free both with Ice and EV's .
And now khan as just announced that is going to be charging the electric vehicles the ULEZ charge aswell .🤬🏴 . So the Conspiracy theorists were right it is all about money
I spent my entire youth going to London on a regular basis. In fact, I learned to drive there and would often be able to park on the streets on a Sunday. Now it has become too expensive to even bother. The last time I went was to meet some work colleagues who were on a business trip. But, I really can't see the point anymore. Whilst congestion is a problem, the only reason it is is because the alternative to driving is much worse. Khan wants to take everyone's money but public transport has not become cheaper or more efficient. Especially for those who are outside.
I've been into London twice since registering nine months ago, so I've saved a little bit. It was annoying having to sign up and wait, and my V5 had to be sent from the leasing company to me as a PDF first and then uploaded. Same faff again in December this year then.... Why didn't TFL just do the lookup from their cameras?!
If you drive an electric car in London Tfl will do all possible to make you pay and make things awkward to the point you can't be bothered, remember to the mayor of London and tfl every penny they can screw from you matters.
Why would I want to drive in London as a tourist? It totally makes sense to discourage people from doing that. - Except for disabled persons. (Are there official exceptions for them?)
My advice to anybody living in London or who travel to London in a car. Get Khan out of Office... Remember, The Labour Party are endorsing the extension of Khan's ULEZ expansion charges. Vote Labour & vote for more Taxes & Restrictions to your freedom.

What a scam, If the cameras can read your plate the soft wear could certainty determine what type of car it is.

Thank for this guide. Do consider doing a guide for other European Cities. I found it tricky for Belgium recently.

What happened to me, registered once when i had to drive in, then 12 months later thought "sod it" ignored the renewal and caught a train.
