With your love of Sci-Fi and models, Im surprised you're not an avid Warhammer 40k player. This Diorama is a perfect setting for the game, just needs to be a bit larger. Looks outstanding and looking forward to getting more tips from you in the future
Awesome! Been following your channel and Im not even in the model railroading hobby. Im a Warhammer 40k guy. The quality of your work is from a totally different league. The result of the techniques that you bring from model railroading into sci-fi is fantastic. Keep rocking! 👍🏻
I came here for the recipe for your concrete slabs texture and color... I got my airbrush ready, modulation paints, oil paints, various washes and pigments and other stuff... And you tell me that it's so simple!!! Chalk paint and dirty water!!! Are you serious!!! I'm of to buy some chalk paint I guess... Thank you very much! The end result is as always fantastic!
Though I am not a Sci-Fi fan (Pop or Classic) I do agree many of the techniques used in model making cross all genre. So I think I have to give you some support. Now the flip side. You mentioned you went to the hardware and the dollar stores for your pieces. Well that may save you a few pennies, HOWEVER, when my fellow club modelers, or I, do scratch building we attempt to shop for odd parts at the Charity Thrift Shops. Uncle Sal, Good Willy, church basement, even yard or garage sales. We can find all sorts of bibs and bobs to fill out our concepts. And with Charity Shops not only do we save a lot of money but the cash we do spend goes into the charities service projects. Double the bang for the buck. Jason here's and idea for a future futuristic build. Take a hand camera with you to a thrift shop. Buy whatever you think can be used in a scratch build. Then back in the workshop show how you incorporated those items into your build. CHALLENGE IS ON! ~Jim
I'm a new subscriber since yesterday, and I downloaded these sci-fi diorama videos to watch offline, and use as reference in the future. I have to say, your work on these is extraordinary. As a scratch-builder myself, I really appreciate the imaginative and creative way you re-purpose everyday things - some of them I've never thought of myself! Great stuff, Jason.
Best Star Trek movie ever - Galaxy Quest. Always impressed with this channel. Lots of lessons learned. This new set will be even better and offer me a chance to use all the toys I too have collected since I was three years old. (I'm in my sixties now)
I have commented on your work in the past and even sent some advice, I'm sure I mentioned that I used to paint sets for TV and movies and I had the opportunity to paint on the first Star Trek movie sets. We originally rebuilt the original Enterprise but something happened and they locked the stage for a while and then the grips went in there and broke up that 8 million dollars of set and threw it all in the trash. They decided that they wanted to build a new enterprise instead and we did. My favorite job was aging the full size replica of the voyager spacecraft to look like it had been in space for 2500 years (in the movie it was called vyger the o had worn off) A few years later I met the person who had made the miniatures for voyager and they had to use photos to match my work so they would look the same. Also interesting to me I painted the plumbing pipes on the ceiling of Gene Roddenberry's office to look like s space ship. As I told you before, I worked with some of the most talented set painters in the world and your work is mostly the same quality. The only one I've ever seen online
Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it!!! Sounds like you had a dream job. I would have loved to do something like that for a living. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to tell me some of your background. Sounds like you are truly blessed in life. Thanks again Robby!!!!
A huge congratulations on your one year anniversary to your layout Jason. Have been watching your channel for only a few months but been in this hobby for years and have learned light years of knowledge just from you only. As you I am a big sic-fi guy and have all the movie’s you talked about and more. It is good for one to take breaks away from our hobbies for it will keep us sharp. Not going to get into what you are doing but am learning from what you are doing to further my ability in weathering. Jason, you are a great artist and someone who is so very compassionate with your talent and knowledge. The concrete platform you are building is what I am doing now whit a metal deck plate and now I see I will he adding some more details to it. Love how you make things look so realistic. Jason, speaking for all who follow you and if they may allow me a billion thank you for allowing us to become part of your family and allow us into your home and also become part of your layout. It is us who are appreciated of you for your videos and your instructional abilities to teach us. Be safe take care till next time and to quote Jason, “happy modeling “.
I don't have much interest in the sci-fi diorama, but I can appreciate fantastic modelling regardless of what is being modeled and this certainly falls under that. Very nice.
Simply fantastic. While not trains per se the cross over in scenery building is tremendously applicable. I personally have zero interest in sci-fi but your use of disparate materials, textures, and color are 100% applicable to model railroad structure and scenery construction. Thanks so much for your continued video creations. Dave
Yes!!! This is what I do!! I’m so happy to have found you!! I too am constantly thinking and scanning garage sales, hardware stores thrift shops... love this so much!! New fan!
Oh great video is never to long when is good. Im happy to kept all my toys and figures from my childhood. And now i will keep some toys from my kids . Great ideas for a diorama now the only thing is missing its time for doing it. I know what to do in my vacation thanks Jason for your inspiration.

This is great Jason! I've really been wanting to do some similar types of builds for tabletop gaming and such. I'm not much into that myself, but I have friends who are and I have wanted to build some pieces for them as gifts and such because you have the opportunity to be as creative as you want with science fiction or fantasy. one year old amazing what you have achieved in a year i have been at my layout for years and no were near your level look forward to year two have a great week all the best from the uk cheers for now al 🙋♂️👍👍👍😁
Very creative ideas. Its ok to have multiple hobbies so you dont burn yourself on just one Its is creative and like you said all the techniques are used in other hobbies
Nice work! I have enjoyed several of your train videos, and this was fun to watch - you used so many of the things I use for miniature gaming terrain, and some great ideas for my future builds. Looking forward to more.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!! This is a nice break from model railroading. Its giving me a chance to work on my weathering skills. Thanks for watching and happy modeling!!!
When you mentioned the toy collection I was remembering that when I worked on the movie The Hunter (it was Steve McQueen's last movie) Mr. McQueen had a huge collection of toy metal cars of all shapes and sizes. They decided to use some of his toys a decoration on one of the sets. In the movie it was sop-posed to be where he lived. It was the only time that I had seen them put a 24 hour armed guard watching a sound stage.
So many great tips, so much amazing creativity packed into one video! What a phenomenal build! I particularly love how that concrete turned out. Thanks for sharing all these extremely helpful modeling tips!
Jason... amazing!! I love how you used the cut up Nerf guns and the handles from the toy light sabers! And, of course, the Red Bull cans...lol. Use anything if works...right! Very inspirational....no matter what you're working on, I find it inspirational. Looking forward to your next video!
This is great! And, different. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Sometimes, it is good to take a break from what you normally work on. You have made incredible progress on the layout, and I'm also looking forward to Year 2!
Awesome stuff, the techniques that you have shown throughout your videos are so helpful and have really helped me to improve the standard of my work. Id like to say a massive thank you to you for all the hard work that goes into your TH-cam show and for sharing all of your knowledge. Keep up the great work.😍
Great video Jason! I like the sci-fi theme for a change, but you need to change the background music to differentiate it from the train videos. Also, I think you should call this new section of videos “Jason Jensen Projects”. A diorama can be a project. An artwork can be a project. So the name could fit for several types of videos that you would like to group together. Keep up the great work!
So creative, one year on eh 👌, one year and me still on a low just cannot get fired up to get back to my modelling and layout . So envious of your commitment and enthusiasm. Regards Fred
On the chipping, Ice Cream salt is better than table salt, but better than both of them is stippling rubber cement on with a stiff brush. Once the top coat is dry, vigorous rubbing to remove the rubber cement leaves very realistic chipping effects.
Hello Jason, congratulations again on your 1 year anniversary for your most recent layout. Amazing accomplishment for a year. What a wonderful surprise. Sci Fi dioramas. I am a huge science fiction fan. Two things instilled that in me. Going to see Forbidden Planet in 1956. And the fact that my father had a Science Fiction book of the month club membership in the 50s and 60s. All of the best authors of the time contributed to that club. So..... I truly look forward to your new videos. One thought. As well as you putting these videos under a new heading, you need new music. Something more Sci Fi. Thanks. See ya.
Great idea with the toy dioramas! With your imagination it’s going to be great! What about some sewing machine bobbins? Hard as Nails is great for gluing everything together. Oh heck, you know all this stuff! I’m also an Altered Art artist and have Boxes and boxes of old “stuff”. I can send you a surprise package! I love watching how you think and create, it’s looking good. Looks like it’s about 1/12th scale?
Jason it was kinda funny you just finished talking about Your Star Wars and GIJoe figures and it goes to a commercial about Star Trek game. I to love Star Wars and Sci Fi. Looking forward to seeing more. Will it stay on this Channel or a different one? Hopefully it 🙏 stays right here. I think I have watched most if not all of your stuff. Keep them coming, Chris
Hi Jason, I love what you have done here. The recent update on the layout is incredible. You have inspired me to try one myself! What did you use to cut up the nerf gun to active such straight clean cuts?
Jason how can You accomplish modelling a construction terrain, like a limestone mountain, constuction zone, dirt road or the like, using acrylic paints and/or pastels or tinting powders? Have you used some other materials, like, let's say, vermiculite or actual limestone dirt? Robert.-
@@JasonJensenTrains Appreciate Your advice Jason, and keep up Your great job and expansion of Your highly detailed layout! Your videos are very resourceful when it comes to getting new ideas for building and even better, weathering structures and scenery! Great work!
Excellent Jason, a superb twist on your previous work, look forward to next upload. The diorama looks great, some ingenious ideas for modelling it. May the force.......ooops, too corny. lol.
Happy New Year Jason! As for Your Terrain video, the one dedicated to Your sci fi models, the very foundations of the structure are painted kind of a dark concrete color? Are they also out of pink foam? What kind of tool You used to sculpt those nice squares at the very bottom of the foundation? Robert.-
Jason I have found good domes for fuel tanks at 99 cent store. At Halloween they have plastic domes with skulls inside they range from 4 inches tall by 2 inches in diameter to about 10 inches tall by 6 in diameter great for fuel tanks or if glued end to end space craft. Also ping pong balls make good spherical tanks. And Ferreo Roche has squarish plastic cases for their candy the make good shipping containers or generator boxes with greeblies added to them the possibilities are endless.
Ah This is your most interesting video so far. Great ideas for no money at all. Mmm would love to see some oil or water on the floor and footsteps around them...have you ever had any thoughts of building a modelrairoad with a Martian or moontheme. Lots of possibilities for steampunk there. Thanks for a fun video, again.
excellent video. I know this is old but i am preparing to build a n scale layout based off of a game called red alert and i was wondering how i could go about building the buildings as there are not any scale references for them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a video on my channel all about using foam. I have a Proxxon cutter or you can use a very sharp knife. Hope you get a chance to watch the video I have on foam. Happy modeling!!!
@@JasonJensenTrains Thanks an excellent and most helpful presentation. Not sure a can afford Proxxon but other methods will be used. Really enjoy your instructions.
Minwax polyurethane will seal the foam so that you are able to use spray paint on it. As I know, without sealing the foam and you use spray paint, the spray paint will eat it. I would have set up the two large pipes so that they would have green glowing goop coming out of them using epoxy and green LEDs.
Hi, I would like to see, if you can build a cool "Infinity" (name of the game) Tabletop City and show it step by step here on this channel... There are many cool videos outside, but never videos with cool details... Is that possible? I mean a Cyberpunk City like in SiFi-Movies (Star Wars, Star Trek, Shadowrun etc).... It would be awsome, if you can answer. Thanks a lot!
What do you use to cut the nerf guns into sections? I’ve tried all sorts of saws and got the best results with a table saw, and a hand saw, however your cuts all seem to be really square and really neat just wondering if you have a trick for it that has worked for you? Really been enjoying your channel and learning a lot from you can’t wait to see the next addition! Awesome work buddy very impressive!
Thank you so much Kyle!!! I have a wide variety of cutting blades but it’s all done by hand. I’ll try to talk about that in a upcoming video. I think it would be a good topic. Thanks for watching!!!
Joe Laroche in what way is anything about this video deceiving, let alone very deceiving? The title is “sci-fi diorama/terrain” and Jason is very clear that this is different from his normal train videos.
@@benmaier670 i felt that is was a too far away from what he usually does and I so much prefer the train side. It was my opinion and I express it out loud.
Part 2 will be a little bit shorter. LOL, Some people say make the videos longer, some people say make them shorter. Cant please everyone I guess. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!!! The second one really is shorter!👍

As for Your Terrain video, the one dedicated to Your sci fi models, the very foundations of the structure are painted kind of a dark concrete color? Are they also out of pink foam? What kind of tool You used to sculpt those nice squares at the very bottom of the foundation?
Robert.-
First!!! 😋 I been waiting for this video tutorial on how to age metal, Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching!!!
Thanks for the great suggestions!
That is a PROPER scabby rust technique!!
excellent video
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!! I have so many ideas that it is hard to focus and time is always an issue, Lol. Thanks for watching!!!
excellent video. I know this is old but i am preparing to build a n scale layout based off of a game called red alert and i was wondering how i could go about building the buildings as there are not any scale references for them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Always a great and informative presentation. Keep it coming. I never saw your face where you were pointing. How can I access your playlist?
Thank you!!! Just go to my home page on TH-cam.
Love it!!! Even with the youtube adds every 3 minutes LOL.
Thank you!!! I know, I watched it after it was uploaded and was so suprised by all the adds. Crazy!
@@JasonJensenTrains I'll still watch! mouse on the skip button ready to go ;-)
I appreciate it!!!
Get you tube premium, you’ll never see another add again. Well worth the money.
That looks sic!
Amazing work mate! What is your go to glue for this type of work?
Thank you so much Matt, I really appreciate it!!! I use Liquid Nails. Thanks for watching!!!
Captain, my Captain!
Curse you, Jason Jensen! Now I feel the need to build a hangar diorama for my die cast Eagle Transporter and Freighter!
LOL, Happy modeling!!!!
That is amazing, can you use the salt technique on the wood kits ?
Thank you so much!!! I believe you can. I have not tried it.
I notice you use foam board as a base on many of your models. How do you cut the foam to get the very clean cuts?
I have a video on my channel all about using foam. I have a Proxxon cutter or you can use a very sharp knife. Hope you get a chance to watch the video I have on foam. Happy modeling!!!
@@JasonJensenTrains Thanks an excellent and most helpful presentation. Not sure a can afford Proxxon but other methods will be used. Really enjoy your instructions.
Way cool video.
Thank you so much!!!
Happy anniversary for your train layout .🎂🏆🚂
Thank you so much!!!
Wowed ...... 🙌🏼🤯
Amazing
Thank you so much Boris!!!
Saw your stuff on fb. Subbed to you in insta and yt. I hit that bell like im in the Death Guard
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!!
JUST SUBBED!!!!! GREAT STUFF!!
Thank you so much!!!
I feel like I'm at Hasbro watching the guys who think up new stuff.
LOL, Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!!!
Parabéns pelo diorama
amazing
Thank you!!!
I have not received any new videos since August from you?
👍👍👍
Congratulations on the one year. Stick with trains...
Thank you so much!!! Just taking a small break! I have some big plans for the layout. Like a big city full of tall brick buildings. Stay tuned.....
Amazing what you can do with generic bargain basement toys and misc building materials!!!!
It's a lot of fun!!!
Your video keeps getting interuputed with commercials .
I know, its annoying! I've never had that before.
I thought I knew how to paint...
Very deceiving, extreme change of pace from what we (i) did love to watch, hoping you go back to what you were doing best
Just taking a small break. The great thing is that all the techniques I show can be used in model railroading. Thanks for watching Joe!!!
Please make the video shorter? You can do a voice over too and add subtitles !!! Too long 😅
Part 2 will be a little bit shorter. LOL, Some people say make the videos longer, some people say make them shorter. Cant please everyone I guess. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!!! The second one really is shorter!👍
you talk too much
