    Hey Trent, I’m a 16 year 747 CA/LCP at Atlas. Great video and explanation. I think you hit all the major key points. Also, DOS is “Date of Signing” of the contract. Normally, contracts run about 5 years typically. I was a regional pilot for 3.5 years before joining Atlas and commuted a lot with very little time at home. Atlas has many US bases on all sides of the country which makes commuting much less and yes, the gateway travel is awesome. I am based in Miami and live in South Florida so commuting doesn’t even apply to me and my quality of life is even better. As far as schedules, Atlas offers a wide range of schedule opportunities to fit any persons schedule preferences. It’s a great company, great people and the airplanes and routes are fun to fly. We fly all over the world and the experience you gain doing this is second to none. It also opens doors to just about any type of flying job you want to do. I decided to stay at Atlas because it just fits my lifestyle and I love going to work each time.

      This is great to hear! I am wanting to fly cargo once I meet qualifications (I start CFI with Trent in the morning!). Everyone lately is very focused on airlines, which is great, but not as much info regarding cargo ops and schedules. This to me is valuable insight.

    People under estimate how important cargo is. It's how we get food on our tables, clothing, tools, and medicine. I believe any type of cargo business, whether it's flying or trucking, is vital and should be more appreciated.

      Facts! As an owner op (trucker that owns and runs his own equipment) I am looking to make commercial air cargo my ending retirement career. I have several pilot family members and 3 that are commercial with 2 flying air freight and am envious of their careers not destroying their bodies and getting a bit better pay and benefits.

    First year FO pay for all aircraft at Atlas is $94.76/ flight hour, with monthly guarantee of 64 hours. After year 1, FO rates start to differentiate (737 FO 108.66/hr, 767 FO 126.62/hr, 777 and 747 FO 133.11hr). Lifestyle varies a lot between fleets, as does the amount and type of flying. Gateway travel is only good in US.

    This is great stuff Trent! I wish I had found this out several years ago. I'm 55 and have my PPL (not current) but this is so enticing. If I was a little younger I might be inclined to pursue this. My advice to anyone with the slightest inkling of pursuing a career in aviation is to just pull the trigger. Don't let life get in the way only to wake up at 55 kicking yourself in the ass for not pulling the trigger.

      Mr E. It's not too late. I've seen FOs get hired at 62 with a wet ATP and 1500 hrs. Plus they will likely extend retirement age to 67. And you can go back to part 91 or 135 after that.

    I can tell you my cousin flies for fed ex. He does international routes. He only works 7 days a month, i.e., flying. He's pulling in $500k or more a year. Pretty good gig

    I'm a pilot as well, A major reason why Atlas does what it does is because it fly's alot of government contracts, I.E military. Meaning it can fly to alot of not so normal locations allowing you to truly live anywhere.

    I worked for Amazon with atlas planes for about a year and a half as a ramp agent, and now I’m about to take my IR checkride within the next two weeks or so. Hopefully I fly for them one day!

    The high time pilots I know that retire usually go to cargo carriers. One of the reasons is packages don’t complain. Atlas and Omni air do a lot of work with the DOD as well, so better job security in case there’s another pandemic

    Such a great video. I’m a student pilot with 22 hours or so. Just graduated high school.Getting ready to go to Florida Tech to get a BA in Aeronautical Science with flight. I know I got a long road ahead but I can’t help but to watch videos like this to effectively plan out my path in life. So I appreciate these videos of you breaking down requirements and showing us younger guys a detailed outline to the majors.

      Hey Tristen, I graduated from Florida tech in 2007 with a degree in aeronautical science with flight. It is a complete and utter waste of money.
      For starters, Aeronautical Science is a completely useless degree. It sounds like a fancy title but that is all it is at best. You cannot get a job as an aeronautical scientist if flying falls through. It’s a bunch of math and science courses that never go in depth enough on either one, and so you’re not qualified in any of them. It’s the Paradox of Choice of university degrees.
      Secondly, the flight instruction is good, however given the price, it’s nothing that you can’t at any other flight school. I’m sure the recruiters wax lyrical about the benefits of a Part 141 program vs Part 61. Let me tell you something. Airlines do not give a flying fuck where you did your training. They just care that you have the hours and the certificates. It’s actually amazing. Not. A. Single. Time. Have I ever had an airline ever mention or care that I went to FIT. Hell, most of them don’t even care that you have a degree at all anymore.
      Thirdly, it’s an engineering school so the male/female ratio is completely lopsided. The parties are terrible. I know you’re probably not going to school for that but when you’ve passed your commercial checkride, and want to blow off some steam, it would be nice to do that at a party that didn’t have a 10:1 ratio. Not kidding.
      You will be absolutely saddled with student loan debt for years, and it’s solely because of bloated administrative costs not due to quality of education that the prices are so high.
      I cannot stress enough about not going there. It’s one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made. Go to an instate tuition school(preferably a big one so you can have fun), get a useful degree (Engineering, Accounting, Economics, Finance) and do your flying part 61 at a local airport.

    Wow you made Atlas sound enticing! I’m just starting my PPL so can’t apply yet, but now I want to when I’m at that point. I’ve flown on Atlas several times, they do military cargo flights frequently

      @jtmagx don't let that be a deterrent. I suck at math and had to go from basic algebra up to calculus 1. It was a real challenge for me but I made the decision that nothing was going to get in the way of my goals, and I studied my a** off and passed. Now, I'm working on my commercial license at a university pursuing my dream and loving every bit of it. You'll thank yourself when your on the other side of it. Besides, i will never use most of the math I had to study to get here. Basic math skills will serve you just fine.

    I recently heard an interesting story supposedly told by a pilot of a cargo carrier. In 2022 he was notified by his company that they were “buying” his flight schedule for the entire year to allow senior staff pilots to get flying time. They paid him $500,000 for the year. Then he was able to get hours as substitute pilot on an unscheduled basis and earned another $450,000. I have no clue if this is true, but if you check the cost to send a package by UPS air, you’ll know where the money and demand is coming from.

    Hey Trent. Just stumbled on to your channel, and glad I did. Nice video, and I think it will help a lot of guys coming up. A few things, the DOS stand for "date of signing", and refers to their new/proposed contract. So it shows the contractual incremental increases year over year. Also, and I'm not sure if this is still true, but those "worry free" commute tickets and hotel stays on the company before and after your trip used to be counted in your paycheck, and taxed at a different rate. Apparently it's why we used to get a lot of their guys (UPS too) in our jumpseats when I worked for the regionals. Not sure if this is still the case, but 10 years ago when I did the assessment for 5Y (Atlas Air) it was. Thanks, and keep going!

    Another great video! I've been thinking that Cargo or Corporate is my future more than the actual airlines; we'll see. I've made a lot of progress since I saw your first video -- my PPL training starts on June 20th; on June 24th I take delivery of my own plane (an older Piper Cherokee) that I signed an agreement to purchase yesterday; this will save me a fortune in training costs not having to spend $145/hr to rent a plane. My instructor specializes in accelerated training, so if all goes as planned, I'll have my PPL and instrument by end of July (likely before), and Commercial by end of August or mid-Sept (the 250 hours). From there it'll be time to become a CFI and also look for other paid work that I can get with the commercial rating... even with my own plane it'd still cost like $30k in fuel alone to get to 1500 hours so CFI and other work will be necessary. I'm SUPER excited to get going! I can't quite believe I just bought a plane...

      @robgoffroadc616 Big day today, hope the purchase goes well. Not to be Debbie downer but i don't think having your ppl AND instrument done by end of July is realistic. PPL maybe, but that is assuming everything goes perfect (weather, maintenence issues, scheduling conflicts, etc) i would figure 6-8 weeks for ppl and same for instrument. You gotta have some days in there for ground school and non flying days. I understand the excitement and desire to get it knocked out but having instructed over 1000 hrs I'm just trying to be honest.
      On the positive side, that's great you're getting your own plane. I did my initial training in a piper warrior, PA-28 is a good aircraft. What study material are you using? Does your instructor have a syllabus? I'm assuming you're gonna be doing it part 61?

      @@trent_dyrsmid Im not saying it's impossible. Mainly i don't think it's a good idea to try and cram PPL and instrument into 5 weeks. To me it kinda raises a red flag and makes me wonder about his instructor, i.e. how much experience they have and what their motivation is. CFI is a teacher and part of that is having a syllabus and realistic schedule that allows enough time between lessons to process the knowledge gained.
      I'll shut up and go back to minding my own business now.

    Just to added, might be a a bit late..
    But DOS is Date of Signing (for the Collective Bargaining Agreement)
    So DOS is the date when contract is signed. Then +1 is one year later and so on.

    I would transport them from the plane to the hotel. They lived all over. Some even lived in Puerto Rico or Honduras, and would fly in for two weeks and then fly home.

    I am not a pilot I am an Electrician.
    For 15+ years now I have been working in the mining industry in Australia on 2 weeks on 2 weeks off roster and cannot imagine myself doing any other roster (but as you said it depends on the individual), also as you sated you can live anywhere in the world, which I actually do, I have lived in Philippines for 12+ years.
    Flying back and forth from home to work every moth means I fly A LOT, but only in the passenger cabin and I have to pay not get paid...lol
    The pilot shortage is going to get worse (e.g. an Indian airline just ordered an additional 400 planes) so it is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to go this path, If I was a lot younger than what I am now I would suck all of your information in and go for it to become a pilot (in cargo as no pax to worry about), so it is great that you are putting this info out there for people, great work mate.

    The path to UPS was to be from Atlas 5 to 10 years ago. I retired from UPS in 2021 at age 60. I did make a tad more than 400K/year the last three years by working a bit extra and selling back some sick leave and vacation. Just want to say that 600K/yr isn't normal or usual at UPS. You'd have to really work the system and do a lot of extra flying to get there. What you mention about the ease of commuting if you do long trips in spot on. Some international stuff was 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. You could live anywhere. I commuted from central and eastern WA for a couple decades doing week on, week off, domestic flying and it worked out nicely. It's true they would build trips where you got paid for your commuting days. Night freight isn't for everyone. Day sleeping takes it's toll and it's far from glamorous. Used to get a ride to the plane in an old UPS package car and our ops building was a single wide. Some take to it like I did and some leave for Delta. Being a freight dawg was great for me. 31 year career.

    Im a 777 FO at Atlas. The schedule is why I'm here. 17 days on, 14 off every month. I love that. I do not want a typical airline schedule.
    Im not chasing the money, the QOL is much more important to me. Are there issues at Atlas? Yes. That is the nature of the business, pilots vs management. There are issues everywhere.
    My typical month I'll see Germany, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China and of course Anchorage, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles. All ar least once. My flights average about 10 hours, some as long as 17 others as short as 4.5. We typically fly with 4 pilots (2 crews). Fully catered, bunks, in our pajamas, and boxes never complain.
    Upgrade time is currently about 5 years in my fleet. Maybe less in others.
    I am 50. I've been flying since I was 15. I've been a CFI, 135 pilot, corporate pilot, and even a sim instructor. I've done enough in my career and I've been around long enough to know, even though Atlas isn't perfect, it's perfect to me.

      @@LauraLSU2009 expect 5-7 years. I would say MIA, but it is a very senior base. ANC is JR base for 747.
      The 777 is JR based in LAX. A base swap to MIA is doable in under 1 year.

    Well here is the thing. Atlas will hire you at R-ATP but it will be on the 737 for a few years until you shift to their main fleet. You will be flying their 737 across the US NOT Europe or Asia for the most part. You won’t gain a lot of hours in the beginning but hey a job is a Job

    No difference in path. Just get the hours in. There will be no better time than now to work as a pilot. At Oshkosh these airline captain recruiters are snatching everyone with the required time, they will take care if the rest. They really want CFIs due to training skills.

      I got hired as a cargo 767 FO 6 months ago. No one even asked about my logbook, let alone looked at it. I provided copies of ATP, 1st class medical, RRTOP, passport, they did a background check, that's it.

    Great information! I reallly don’t want to do the airlines I would rather do cargo. My wife and I are truck drivers and I wouldn’t mind be away from home for a period of time then take off. That pay of well worth going there instead. Sorry just found your channel. Great content

    Hi Trent, thanks for your videos. They're exactly what I was looking for. I'm 41 and passionate about aviation, but I always thought it was too late to start. I'm a night owl, most focused and energetic after sunset, and I can easily stay awake until 3 AM. No matter where I go, even in a new time zone, my body naturally falls into this cycle. On the other hand, I find it really hard to wake up before 9 AM.
    Do you think it's possible for me to build a pilot career that takes advantage of being a night owl, avoiding early morning flights and preferring evening ones? If so, what type of pilot should I aim to become (airline, cargo, corporate, instructor, etc.)?

    Lots of issues here. Airline pilot central shows what all carriers both cargo and passenger based carriers offer. The rates there are pretty accurate. What’s not given is work life rules based on union negotiations. That makes or breaks a job. Atlas doesn’t have the best work rules for that. Cargo is a great career now that I fly cargo I wouldn’t go back to passenger service. The statement about furlough passenger side vs cargo is mostly true but not always the rule. Other than that cargo is a great job. And often overlooked by the younger pilots that want to look good in their uniforms and walk through the airport terminals for recognition. Personally it’s over rated.

      Hi Steven...I'll be hustling for most of the time and working as a CFI. The balancing act that I will have to figure out along the way is how much time I instruct in a single engine...vs how much time I work at a part 135 in a twin/turbine aircraft. Obviously, the twin/turbine time is more valuable...BUT...how many hours can I get per month? Perhaps I'll be doing a hybrid approach of some kind.

      I visited them. Seems like a good school…but they have older planes and a 6 month waiting list. Plus, they are part 141 so it would have taken me a lot longer to get my ratings.

    We had a furloughed FO go to Atlas &had his days off rolled for a month straight b4 he went home. He quit. Pay was good but not worth it according to him. Perhaps contract rules have changed but I would certainly ask someone at Atlas.

      That is common for the first month right after you finish training but before you can bid a line. It sucks but doesn't stay that way. Couple months tops. I don't work for atlas but a similar cargo airline and this happens here as well. Some put up a fight with scheduling and were given a few days off to go home and see the fam.

      You should have been with me flying in Vietnam. Maybe a couple of days off a month and getting shot at for your trouble. But the pay was great: $410 a month plus $100 flight pay and $25 for combat pay. Free housing too. Think about it while you are complaining. And when I got out after the war there were no flying jobs available. You folks have no clue how fortunate you are today to fly airplanes and make great $.

    If a $250k second-year FO is real then better than every other airline. Usually, a 10 yr widebody FO gets to about $200k with legacies. Atlas did change year-one rate for the fleet to $92/hr and the top pay to 12 yr B747 Capt at $295/hr.

    I am currently attending flight school and came across this video. Please forgive me if I have misunderstood. Are you suggesting that Atlas doesn't require one to fly at a regional level, and theoretically, one could accumulate the necessary hours as a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)? So, if one has a bachelor's degree and the required hours, they could proceed directly to cargo? Is that correct?

      Just make sure that your log book has all the details. Night flight? Approaches flown? Take offs and landings? Modern log books allow you to record all those details.

    If im working 50+ hours a week, and have no experience or even pilot license, is it even possible for me to become a pilot? I have always dreamed of it and at a crossroads in my life where I want a new career, is it even possible to become a pilot?

      I was in your situation last year, zero time with a full time career. If you want to make this your next career you have to effectively make flight school your job for the next year and then teach flight school for the next 2 to be sure you have the hours you need. So prepare yourself financially for zero income for a year and ~80-100k of debt, then 2 more years of low income as an instructor before you can apply for your 1st "real job" flying.

      You can't. You'll never get the time off to get through indoc, trying, OE, and consolidation. Not to mention the 121 flight time limits every 7, 30, 90, 365 days.

      I’d bet they’d hire you as old as 60… but I don’t work for Atlas, so I would suggest you’d be better off to ask them that question.

      Yes....if you need an ATP, you need 1500 hours.

      1500 hours is the minimum required for ATP. Part 121 cargo carriers require atp, with few exceptions for R-ATP

    Didn’t Atlas have a crash a couple of years ago in Houston? because of hiring issues where they didn’t do background checks when they needed too? Have they made any improvements after that incident?

      @@trent_dyrsmid yea just did, the FO lied about his background and accidentally activated Go Around switch then panicked and didn’t even use instruments. Difficult situation honestly for the Airline.

      Sadly no....BUT it is a fabulous training aid for instrument flying. With that said, if you are training for a private license, the physics model (how it feels) in X-plane is significantly better than MSFS2020.

      I was never a sim guy but last year i got the new MSFS and its crazy how realistic it is, especially the virtual atc interaction. I would recommend it to anyone.

      MSFS is a VERY realistic trainer. The trainers certified by the FAA aren’t as good.

    The SMALLEST cargo planes in the US are 757s. I know there are some caravans, but those are usually feeders and can start at least than 1500

    im 45 years old so obviously not gonna start a career but I do have a question about flying for anyone....
    I WANT TO FLY! But, a few years ago i did a test flight in a cessna 172. I took off fine and about 10min later I started to feel sick. Its the same feeling I get if I play a game in VR. I didnt throw up but the instructor had to land the plane I felt so bad. I felt like ASS for 3 straight days before I was feeling normal again.
    is this something that I would eventually get used to or do you think it could be something else? Also, is there any way I can train my body for it?

      I threw up the entire time I was getting my PPL, including on my checkride. I have over 10000 hours now. You get over it.

    So pretty much i would have to purchase my own plane to get 1500 hours? It would cost a minimum of $200,000 to rent a plane at $135 per hour times 1500 hours. I think renting during PPL and then buying a $70,000 Cessna for all the other stuff and just paying the hourly rate for the instructor.

      I became a cfi at 44 and got 600 hours my first year as a part time job. Im retiring from my L.E. career next june. I should have my time by then to move on to an airline. I am pretty driven, but if I can do it so can you.

    UPS Cargo requires an ATP certificate while the airline pilot jobs say that they'll train me to get my ATP certificate... does UPS train their new hires to get their ATP or do I have to already have it before I apply?
