    Retired 747 captain here. As much as I loved flying the whale, I enjoyed crop dusting even more and made enough money to not work for 6 1/2 months of the year. It was a great job. You got paid by the acre so the more efficient you are, the more money you make per hour.

    You are correct. The one thing that is 100% about the industry is that it is in constant change. A decision and announcement about new hiring and training can be made one day, and the message the next day will completely reverse. I managed to work without interruption for all 37 years. Change is constant. Hang in there. It is the best job I could ever have had.

    As a military pilot about to make the transition, the one factor that’s not usually considered in future hiring trends is global conflict. WHEN the next war happens, it has the potential to drastically change the civilian airline industry.

    If you’re already instructing and almost at your 1500 and no one is hiring at the airlines, DPEs are much needed!!! Please consider being a DPE, my friend just paid $1500 to her DPE for her private checkride

    • @idekav.
      @idekav. 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      there are DPE’s that are doing rides part time, while being airline captains on widebodys. that being said, becoming a DPE is no easy feat, its not a simple process.

    • @chrisfowler6278
      @chrisfowler6278 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed but it is a hard job to obtain from what I’ve been told. They wont hire DPEs unless there is a demand for them. The demand criteria is time between when you apply for your check ride via IACRA and when it is taken. Usually your CFI will call the DPE direct get a date and then fly said student up to that date only signing IACRA a day or two before to make sure they have met all standards per ACS/PTS. Therefore it doesn’t look like there is any real need. Which obviously there is. Not mention the other requirements to be a DPE. I believe the current average is like 1/2 check rides a month across the board of all DPEs. It’s wild.

      @@Captainashton I def agree with you, there are options everywhere man. It’s these pilot factory alumni people thinking they would get 300k as a CFI that make the others scared by saying dumb shit. Just because they’re mad lmao, but I know for sure for people like me who just love to fly, there’s always a job out there flying SOMETHING. but… big but…. DPE is federal level stuff and they’re slow with that… you might find yourself on a waitlist for a year minimum just to hear from them anyways my point is I’d lean on doing something else. Independent CFI is more profitable providing the right platform.

    As a current Captain at a Major Airline, I can say that IMO it is because the inflation is finally catching up to affect travel. Families have less disposable income for things like travel since food prices and basic goods have increased so much. Yes the deliveries have been an issue and has caused a slow down but undoubtedly you’ll see that the hiring freezes and furloughs, especially for airlines with much higher labor cost are here to stay for a bit unfortunately. AA now has a hiring freeze and that’s trickled down to their wholly owns such as Piedmont. Just pray you have enough seniority to weather the storm. I’ve been flying in the airlines since the last recession, so I’ve been flying a while and I know what all this looks like.
    This young man is a professional and offers great advice and has a positive outlook and he’s correct it comes in waves, highs and lows. If you’re a CFI of course you want to make it to the airlines as quickly as possible. I spent years as a CFI, bc when I was coming up even the Regionals wanted a lot of flight time. I had over 2500 hours and 1000 ME along with a type rating in a Citation as well and they were picky, many guys had similar experience to be an FO at a Regional. All things will happen in time as long as you keep moving forward and have determination it’ll all happen in time.

      There are specific universities and/or flight school that are part 141 which have been approved based on curriculum for a Restricted ATP.
      Normally, 1500 hrs is needed for an ATP. With a restricted ATP, you only need a minimum of 1250 or even 1000. (Military pilot cases can even potentially do around 750 if I remember correctly.)
      Not every school offers this. The FAA has a list of school that have been approved for this, you can find it by google searching for “FAA approved restricted ATP 141 schools”
      I am not certain that a bachelors degree is required to get the R-ATP, though most if not all universities do require you to get a degree alongside your flight training. I could be wrong about this, maybe someone else can chime in

      There are a set list of universities and flight schools whose graduates qualify for a restricted atp at 1250, or even 1000 hrs instead of 1500. These are generally if not all 141 schools, not part 61.
      Pretty sure military pilots can get a restricted atp at 750hrs in some cases, but I’m not sure on that.
      Also not sure if a restricted atp requires a degree or not, but most university programs will make you get a degree alongside your flight training. I don’t think the degree has to be aviation related either. Maybe someone else can chip in on this.
      There’s a list of approved R-ATP schools the FAA has put out that you can find by google searching “FAA approved R-ATP flight school”.
      If you’re looking to go to a university and get a restricted ATP with a degree, I suggest you also look into regional airline partners. For example, in southern Utah near SkyWest HQ, there are two universities that have “partnered” with SkyWest, and offer a restricted ATP. Graduates of these universities can get into the SkyWest cadet program, which has some perks. SkyWest even has tuition/flight training reimbursement for FOs who go through one of their partner school and cadet program, up to $17,000 or so. If you’re already considering a 141 university, I’d look into school partnerships as well before deciding just in case you see something you like.

      There is a list of approved universities whose graduates can get a restricted ATP. (R-ATP: Meaning 1250 or even 1,000 hrs instead of 1500.) you can find the list here:
      www.faa.gov/pilots/training/atp/media/Institutional_Authority_List.pdf
      Pretty sure military pilots can get a r-atp at like 750hrs but I’m not positive.
      I don’t know for sure if a degree is required, but most universities will make you go to school alongside your flight training. I don’t think it has to be an aviation degree though.
      If you’re looking to go to a university program to get a restricted atp, I suggest you also look into regional airline partners schools. For example, a couple universities in Utah near the SkyWest HQ have partnered with SkyWest. Their graduates not only get a R-ATP, but get access to SkyWest’s cadet program and could qualify for up to $17,000 flight training reimbursement from SkyWest if you become a FO with them. You also get some other benefits from their cadet program. Worth looking into if you’re going to a university anyways. Just my 2 cents

    As a pilot, can you bring your own homecooked food to eat on the airplanes?

    • @ATH_Berkshire
      @ATH_Berkshire 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Domestic flights are probably OK, but international flights are a no no. The other issue is safety. How Are you planing to keep food safe to eat for more than 24 hours? Crew trips are often 3/4 days and sometimes 5/6 days. You’re going to end up eating airport/city restaurant food on a very regular basis.
      Disruption is a fact of life in the airline industry. You need to be willing/able on occasions to eat whatever’s available when it’s available. Regular predictable mealtimes with exactly the food you want is often not possible.

      Haha yes you can and I tried it for several years but on 4 day trips you end up throwing food out as many hotels didn’t have refrigerators or microwaves to heat up your food, so it either went bad or you ate it cold.

    Here’s another rumor. The airline credit cards are defaulting. Over 50% of their income comes from the cards. With these defaulting cards it means the airlines must raise ticket prices to make up the difference. Higher ticket prices mean less ticket purchases. Less tickets mean less of a need of pilots.

      You're a fool if you believe Trump will fix this. He doesn't impact Boeing and why they can't ship new planes. More likely Trump created economic issues when he threw trillions of extra stimulus into the economy. People are spending money like drunken sailors including on travel. Excess spending drives inflation. The 10 year outlook for pilots is very good and will always have dips and peaks.
