    If you are looking for a low cost, high impact modification for your car, look no further than a set of performance struts, shocks, and springs. This is without a doubt the best modification I have made to my car to-date. Prior to upgrading to the Bilstein kit, I drove on lowering springs for a year and the ride felt sloppy. It felt like something was missing. In this comprehensive review, you’ll learn why having the proper shocks and struts for your car is so important!
    HUGE thank you to Katie for filming, my dad for driving the chase car, and my friends at FCP Euro.

      Its a matter of tune the right tyre pressure. In my Alfa ive used to Run @2.5 Bar for all the wheels, with B12 kit i run @2.4 which is pretty firm but its very planted, not bumpy at all.

    I like that you have mentioned the value in overhauling suspension. It is often forgotten that people seeking to upgrade suspension are starting from a quite low point with a used car full of worn components. Useful budget upgrades then start with the super low cost option of Sachs dampers and stock bushes. Moving up the scale from there, something like Bilstein B4 or B6 dampers, BMW stock motorsport springs and improved bushes. Improvements, including bushes and ball-joints, can often be found in the BMW stock parts list. Sites like realoem, though not including full spring info, include info about bushes and other components used on motorsport variants, larger engined models and the M models. Careful part-bin mods based on this info can be really effective. After all, you bought a BMW because the chassis is good in the first place, didn't you! Top tip: like any rear-wheel drive car with strut suspension on the front they benefit greatly from an increase in front spring rate. This reduces roll and improves front camber, improving stability under braking and grip overall including allowing greater rear compliance and therefore traction. If you go really hard the ride will get a bit choppy but the benefits come way before that point.

    Great video.. I have the B8's on my 2009 Cayman with Cayman R Porsche springs (-20mm) .. The ride is as firm as you'd want on UK roads. Rough roads are jittery but smooth roads are very comfortable. Oh and the B8's for my car came with internal bump stops. Handling performance is certainly better. I replaced top mounts front and rear but my 38,000 mile units look like they are in perfect condition.

    On pretty much any older car, replacing the struts/shocks along with a bunch of control arms and mounts is pretty much the first 'mod' to do, before spending on engine and brakes upgrade. Just b sure to use quality parts (be it from Fcp or other site) because there is a plethora of biodegradable cheap brands these days sold by all reputable online stores - they sell the junk parts along with the quality and OEM brands, so it's kind of confusing for the new comer. Great video by the way!

    Love your vids man.... clear and objective. Have a 2018 F30 xi. Would love to lower it but have mixed feelings about which springs to get and if that’s all I should get. Some say get H&R, some say eibach and you now Bilstein. And some say you’d have replace struts and shocks too. I also don’t want it to be too stiff and too low as I plan on getting a front lip. Advice?

  • @ltdasilva93
    @ltdasilva93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Just a fair warning to most of you looking at this setup. H&R springs have a terrible rep on forums, regardless of how much good you hear from them. Get yourself a set of these B8 Bilsteins or Koni Yellows and pair them with some Eibach springs. Eibach makes a much more superior spring with comfort in mind. H&Rs are horrible with comfort especially when paired with the B8's that have a lower travel at the front

    Justin, I'm about to do the same upgrade! Funny, I already bought the same set up and brand. I am really glad to hear the ride is not too stiff. I had done a similar swap on my maxima years ago and found it to be too stiff. I am also replacing the control arms from an M3. It will increase the negative camber a little. I already added a stiffer rear sway bar and found it to rescue the initial understeer. My e90 initially came with "touring" suspension set up so the handling was a bit too "lazy" for me. This should bring it to where I want it. BTW, my stock radio just died. Replacement is hugely expensive. I may just go with an aftermarket unit. any thoughts?

    The ride still looks a lil rough judging by the camera bumping up n down, but that's what comes w the lowered look. I just put oem's on my e46 m3 n I agree man. It was like a new car...especially on these fucked up Mi roads !! We're changing the nick name from motor city to pot hole city. I've been trying to find roads that don't have any n go out of the way to go up to like 23 mile which is fairly smooth just to avoid the aggravating turmoil. I did see the budget increase in our state to get the roads rebuilt, but you know what that means....fuckin traffic!! All damn summer!!! Better make sure the a/c n coolant is in good standing Bc/ I got a bad feeling it's gonna be a long blistering one sitting in traffic. Why have they not developed a new composite to pathways new roads with that won't deteriorate as quickly yet not ice over in winters...they should have scientists on this shit. Car looks dope lowered though man, hope it's worth the sacrifice of a comfortable ride though. When I pulled my old oem sticks n struts they wouldn't even expand...so believe me, even oem stuff can still make a big diff.

      Are you happy you went with the stock setup over lowering springs and sport shocks? or coilovers? I have a e90 330i with the sport suspension and was thinking of just replacing the shocks and struts with oem to keep costs down. I have 130k miles on the originals and i hate the way it rides atm as it is bouncy over some bumps and I can tell it suffers in the turns, but I'm sure its because they are beyond worn out.

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This setup is much firmer than stock but I think the low profile tires on the 19’s are what make the ride comfort suffer. I noticed a HUGE difference a couple weeks ago when I switched out my 17” winter wheels with OEM size tires. I probably could have picked some better roads for the video but I was looking for low traffic. They really need to keep working on hall. The area around hayes is perfect now that they repaved but garfield to romeo plank is a disaster.

      Justin Buice and the other comment; it's really personal preference, experimentation. The lowered look adds style, but to me, a couple inches isn't worth the sacrifice of a comfortable ride, especially here in pot hole city. But if your still riding in factory shocks n struts at 130k, n replace em w oem you'll notice a huge difference in ride support. And a lot cheaper. I think they recommended shocks n struts every 50-70 miles...mine was at 70 n like I said didn't even expand anymore, so it was like I was driving without suspension support anyway rubber to mount. I forgot the name, but it was same manufacturer that makes em for BMW off the line (obviously term OEM). I order all my stuff from fcp euro so you can return the parts later n just pay for shipping when you replace your next set. Essentially an investment for free parts in future. A lot of factors come into play though. Def type of roads you have n what state you live in. Example Arizona roads are like driving on glass, so lowered suspension will still ride smooth. Something to think about.

    • @medicinalmusic5242
      @medicinalmusic5242 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      N yes, size of rims are a big factor as well. I rock 19's on my m3 both winter n summer set, so it requires playing w tire pressure to achieve ride comfort as welll. I have heard 17 n 18's ride a lot smoother though, but to me I'd rather see a larger rim than a lowered car to try n fill the space under wheel well. But then again, were talking inches here.

      oOF, I'd get from a BMW specialist or something ... for my volvo I only use IPD/viva performance/etc for suspension parts like that ... their lowering springs are nothing to write home about, I wouldn't test it with their anti-sway bars

    How come most people in the states drive cars with the "se" body? In the uk most drive the m sport body style. Is it hard to get hold of the m sport kits over the there?

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The m sport body is less common here which makes it expensive to do the conversion. Im looking into getting just the front bumper and it will be around $800

      @fozpringle1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justin Buice wow thats expensive, iv been to the states and i saw alot of non sport cars just couldn't understand that. M sport front bumper here on a pre lci can be brought for less than £100 used. Thats just the bumper, no grills or fog lights. On a lci car probably £150.
