    Hey Lizzie, thank you for that tutorial. I sewed a skirt for my girlfriend based on this pattern and I added some things to it like pockets and side stripes.
    Personally, I found it easier to do the gathering of the fabric with string and needle, instead of using the straight stitch. The sewing yarn would rip easily, so I decided to do it differently. I learned a lot through this. Thank you :)

    love this shape and fabric on you, and it looks really neat, well done ! I had also never heard of the trick to sew the end of the zip your way, with the inside out thingy, could you do a dedicated video about it, to explain it more in depth ? Thanks in advance, looking forward to your next piece !

      Hello! thanks for your comment - I'm glad you like my skirt :) it's quite a new technique for me as well. As with most of my sewing techniques.... I learnt it from the internet haha! I can certainly try and put a tutorial together to show it in a bit more detail - I'll see what I can do :)

    I thought it was a great video. I like seeing variations on how to do skirts, I always pick up something slightly different from each person. I am filling my closet up with skirts, so this was great. Your skirt turned out lovely and loved the lining on the inside.

    Thank you for this wonderful tutorial - I really appreciate not having to trek out to town and buy a pattern for this simple skirt that I can adapt as I please. I don't sew often, but once in a while, I will if I want something that I can't or won't buy. I saw some cute little cotton "French Market" skirts at an event earlier this month that were similar, but with a tie belt - they were $150 each! No way would I pay that much for something to throw on to go shopping... Again, many thanks!

    Oh what a lovely skirt! Lots of 50th vibes! I was a little concerned when you cut the zipper ends off.... It looked like you left them with the cut ends out so that the pull can slide off.... I would not cut them, just fold the ends inward and sew right over them when the waistband is sewn together. An other future tip if you have a 140 cm wide fabric is to not bother with sideseams, just cut the whole witdh in the right length and gather it all. You can still sew the gatherstitches in separate parts to make the gathers even. This method is also useful if you buy a fabric with a borderprint along the sides and want that to run along the hem of the skirt. Good luck! PS You have really developed as a seamstress!

      Hi Eva! Thanks so much for your lovely comment. I know what you mean with the zip ends - I have learnt the hard way in the past not to trim them too short. I tend to prefer it though rather than tucking them in to minimise bulk and to make sure it's as neat as possible. thanks for the tip on fabric width - I have done exactly that before and just not bothered with side seams but this time my fabric wasn't wide enough. I'm all for short cuts though!! teehee!

    I recently lost 80lbs after going through bariatric surgery and all of my clothes are too big. I can’t justify spending a ton of money on new clothes. I’ve been wanting to make my own clothes to save some money and since I have a bunch of fabric just laying around. And this looks pretty easy! I can’t wait to make myself some new clothes!

    When I was in my early teens i made a few skirts like this. I figured I just needed a length of fabric to make the fullest skirt possible and a verý wide waistband which was the fashion at the time. Ah the self confidence of youth! I wouldn't dream of trying to make my own pattern now.

    Hi Lizzie! I know this is an old video, but I just came across it and I have two burning questions!
    What was the length (or height) of your waistband piece & your actual skirt piece? I know you said it's a personal preference but I really like that way yours fits together so I wondered if you would remember your choices?
    And second Q - could you tell me if this fabric is woven or knit or double knit? I tried looking on the website for the fabric, but didn't find the information there either. I LOVE the way this fabric flows as a skirt so I want to try to shop around to find one like it, but I'm just not too sure what to look for. It seems like a 100% woven cotton... could you confirm?
    Thanks so much! I hope you can remember these details for a piece you created over a year ago!! :) Cheers

    Gday Lizzie. Hope you are well? Thank you for sharing. Your skirt is gorgeous & looks fantastic on you & I sooooo love the birds. I think sometimes in sewing we can do what makes us comfortable & if its a little off from an instruction pack, does it really mater? I don't think so, if the finished garment is equally beautiful then sewing the way we do is still great. Well done you. XX

    • @LizzieB
      @LizzieB  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Anna! I'm really well and I hope you are too? Thank you so much for your compliments on my skirt :))) I completely agree!!! As long as you end up with a garment that makes you feel great I don't think specific techniques really matter too much. Everyone is different and finds different methods and tricks that suit them! I would love to learn more about proper sewing techniques but going off-piste sometimes is all part of the fun of learning! X

    Please can you explain what you mean by cutting the waist band on the fold? I don’t see 2 cut pieces of waist band in the video. Only one continuous piece. Why do we need to divide by 2?

    Pretty skirt. Can you please point me in the right direction on the regular zip instead of invisible zip thing you were talking about? Thank you.

    • @LizzieB
      @LizzieB  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peggy! thanks for your comment. I have been having real trouble getting my invisible zip foot to work reliably because even when I press the teeth away from the tape I end up with my needle going into the teeth and causing major problems. So now I just use a regular zip foot to put my invisible zips in. This means I just sew over the top of the zip with the normal foot, sewing as straight and close to the zip teeth as possible and holding the zip teeth open with my fingers as it is all pulled through my machine. It's working much better for me! I hope that makes sense?

      +nguyen ngoc lan anh hello! I'm not an expert on different models of machines but I'm pretty sure that a combined sewing machine and overlooker doesn't exist. I don't have an over locker - I just sew everything from my normal machine :)
