- How to take your measurements and make a simple, rectangular skirt pattern that can be easily varied. No serger or zipper required.

(I have insomnia issues, so it's half past 3 in the morning here... N I've just finished watching this as your 2nd video. I must say: )...
But oh so happy I've found your channel. I think you're brilliant, wonderful, inspiring & I could just go on.
I loved your video. The mustard skirt is gorgeous and just what I've been looking for. I've just inherited my mother's sewing machine and I don't want to put it into a cupboard claiming "Idk how to sew"... So I'm trying to learn how 😊

This is an excellent video, you give just the right level of detail, mentioning each individual step but not expounding on information you aren't trying to teach.
This is impressive beyond belief to me. I may be an artist, but clothing is something I have the hardest time wrapping my mind around.
French seam pockets might as well be sorcery how the HELL did you end up with right sides facing out and no sobbing in a corner.

I am so glad I found you! I've gotten frustrated with trying to find to find garments that fit my style and my person. It's exciting to see someone else actually accomplishing my own challenge. Although I think your's is far more do-able from the start. My final goal is the weave and sew everything, but that is my usual Cart- horse approach. LOL. I"m going to start with these skirts though.
You explain this with such clarity, plenty of detail but not in a way that feels overwhelming. Definitely feels like a transferable tutorial. Thanks for this.
Also "aggressively feminine" - amazing. Sometimes I just want to...idk, wear tea party buttons on a pink skirt and be aggressively feminine ;)

You are very detailed and your sewing and measurements for cutting are excellently captured. French seams on curves...I would not have thought of it as I have only used a French seam on pillowcases.

I only just found you! You're great. For the pockets, I wish I could see how the rest of the measurements went. I slowed you down to 50% and then watched the pocket portion about ten times. Then I went to sleep at night instructing my brain to figure it out. Then this morning I was able to put pockets into a dress I am making. So thanks! I really like a French seam. I love that they are such sturdy pretty finishes!

I want to make the yellow skirt too. May I ask, did you do the French seams on the pockets? I’m confused and don’t know how far down the skirt I’m meant to sew. Plus, two pockets were brought together and sew wrongs sides together, so were these pockets from each rectangle? So confused! 😆

Do you interface your wristbands? How do they hold up over time?
LOVED your video, except for 1 little thing. The statement of wearing whatever you like. I LOVE skirts, but have gotten very little support, and quite a bit of ridicule, for being a GUY, wearing a skirt! 😞 I created one that is my own design, but having trouble getting it together nicely. Any suggestions where a man can seek help with a skirt, without getting derogatory accusations? Thx.
It gets better, but sadly we are still not at a point where there is realy *no* judgment concerning clothing choice. You can walk around compleatly redicioulus and call it stylish, but as a man wearing "feminine" cloths or as a girl covering up still gets a sad amount of backlash.
There must be info on making kilts out there. There are lots of videos and all on how to measure to make a skirt pattern for yourself. Wearing that skirt on the street is really your challenge. Good luck.

How did you come up with the measurement of 40" for the width?
I understand the method is to take your waist measurement and calculate how much more you need to accommodate pleats... but I don't know how to measure how large I want the pleats.
I learn best with formulas/equations if anyone can explain it in those terms. I know I probably could figure it out with some draping but it frustrates me that I don't even know where to start with the calculations.
also-love the tutorial! showing the pattern onscreen & explaining it really helped me understand what to go for. would love more videos in this style- where you show the pattern and explain how you came up with it and then show how you sewed it.
I don't know how to calculate pleats, I just go by what fabric is available. In this case I think I remember deciding the width by holding the tape measure in a loop around my legs about where I wanted the hem to sit.

My mother is mentally incompetent, but before anything could be done about it in 2019 she hired a bulldozer company, hauled all my clothing, books, piano, everything to the garbage and had my house in the historical area of the city I live in, to the garbage. I was traumatized! Your simple skirt in this video has given me the push make your pattern here for one skirt for me.
Doctors are not required to take Biochemistry in university, what is taught is like scattered marbles through a 1000 page text book. Women face the bad temper of testosterone and when females age then only testosterone rules...I wrote a book called ''Sex For Females Only'' before the destruction - I hope I get a ''jet'' to mentally to re-write my book from memory and re-research my references. Your aim to sew all your clothes for one year, I will use to apply to my goal. I do have a B.Sc. and like your teaching of history and sewing and I would like to put my education to good use. Again, thank you!

Joann's. They were on sale, 50% I think, and only the pink was 100% linen, the other two were blends.
Anyone else love that they say "the most important modern update"? Pockets are probably the least modern thing you can add cos if you're adding modern pockets then you may as well not add any pockets at all.
I watched this video maybe 10x before I finally started to understand what to do.. I consider myself as someone who leaned easily but for some reason clothes to me are a level of knowledge I just can't reach
It's ok, completely foreign skills can take time to learn, but once you start there tends to be a snowball effect! I'm also working on making my videos easier to understand for the newbies out there 😁
@@MariahPattie tbh youre easy to understand and as a COMPLETE newblet haha I feel the problem with me is that I don't understand some of the sewing terms like placquet and etc.. So I usually go and learn the meaning and then come back and rewatch, I'm very determined to learn

I am so out of shape. My tummy is bigger than my behind. Because of that, I sew my own skirts.
When I shop for clothes, the skirts are higher in the front and my back is ok.
I buy skirts that are XXX large to redesign it. It looks the same. I go on diets, etc. nothing helped.
I thought for the longest time. I design my own dress. I sew tank top than sew my skirt to the tank top. I buy flow tops now and wear matching clothes.
I am happy and my hems are even.
I haven't wear pants since 1977. I still don't want pants.
you should consider giving away or selling some of your patterns for people who aren't as skilled but still want to save money and get those other benefits. Honestly, female clothes with real pockets is enough of a draw
Chris Helvey there are plenty of free patterns online and this video is a very informative, perfect tutorial that gives anyone any information they need to make their own. I think the hours she put into sewing, filming, editing, calculating, narrating for this video is incredibly generous.
Pockets aren't modern, they're historical.
