Easiest Skirt Ever - for the complete beginner

  • This tutorial will work best for the beginner sewist who has made a few things before but would like to try making a skirt. I have made myself a bunch of skirts using this method and I love how simple it is.
    A few notes on GOTA certified fabric
    The fabric I use in the tutorial is from: monaluna.com
    When I found out there was a certification for organic, fair trade, low chemical process fabric my heart was so happy. Have you been frustrated with the lack of ethical/sustainable cool clothes that are plus size? ME TOO. Luckily I can sew and make my own. If you are an absolute beginner NO PROB. Check out this playlist of tutorials to help you get to know your sewing machine.
    • Sewing & No-Sewing Tip...
    Steps:
    Measure your waist. Remember that number
    Measure how long you want your skirt: keep it longer rather than shorter. Your butt is going to make the back rise up a bit, so a longer skirt will be better to start with.
    Lay out your fabric with a fold in the middle.
    Measure from the fold to what your waist, then add 1/2". For example, my waist measurement was 48, then I added 1/2" and the total became 48 1/2". Super easy, don't stress too much.
    Measure out how long you want your skirt then add 4", my measurement was 20" and I added 4".
    Cut and sew! Follow along in the vid or ask questions in the comments if you get stuck!

    One suggestion for plus size ladies. Measure your waist and stomach, sitting down. This ensures that you will be able to sit in your skirt. I found this out years ago when I sewn the skirt and was trying it out.

    Nice. I was taught to remove the salvage because it shrinks at a different rate to the rest of the fabric. But then again, I was also taught to always pre-shrink the fabric before laying it out to cut.

    Hey i hope I'm not asking any silly questions, I'm completely new to sewing.
    Am I right in thinking the fabric used will be double the waist measurement? then the elastic brings in the waist to fit? I'm sorry if I missed this in the video. I've made it but it seems like a lot of fabric on the waist part so I'm not sure if I've done it right or if my.fabric is quite thick and bulky. I tried it on before the elastic and it was huge haha 🤣
    Thank you so much 😊

One think I’ll mention is you’ve not made it clear that the fabric around the middle is doubled, I read thru the description and it mentions a fold, but it’s still not clear that the fold is intended to make the waist measure doubles for movement. To clarify, your waist is 48 and you cut your fabric to 48 and you got the gathering that you have in the finished skirt? You didn't add extra to have a flowy gather? Thanks.

    I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong but I don't understand how to turn my fabric into a skirt. I was trying for over 2 hours and I haven't gotten anywhere. If you could make a very detailed video of the skirt I would love to learn

    Hi I am confused about waste size. So your skirt had 48" waste so is there a total of 96" around. For gather

    I have a beginner question - so I hope you are still seeing these comments.
    At around the 3 minute mark, are you adding interfacing or something to the edge of the skirt before you hem? Or just doing the stitching onto the edge of the fabric?

    I sew mine am my butt make the back really short can u tell me how to fix this thank you an I love ur video it's so hard to find a plus size teacher like my self love u

    • @BreaknRemake
      @BreaknRemake  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh no! You'll have to have another person help you, and you will have to make a special pattern piece for the back.
      Put on your skirt. Then have someone measure from the waist of your skirt, over your butt, and down the back of your leg. They have to tell you where your skirt ends in the front and where it should end in the back.
      Your new pattern should be 2 pieces, the front is the same, just a big rectangle. The back will look different, it will have an extension where you need to add length for your butt.
      When you make your new skirt, just make a mockup or a practice skirt to see if your side seams match up.
      If you want me to make a video tutorial let me know! I totally can! This is a little advanced for a beginner, but I totally believe in you!

    So the width of your skirt was double the size of your waist as you cut it on the fold? I guess you could make the width more if you wanted bigger gathers?

  • @NatalieWynne-f3u
    @NatalieWynne-f3u 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So by cutting on the fold the width is double your waist measurement?

    So I sew 1.5 inch seam allowance before sewing sides together and then sew them together with zig zag stitch?

  • @keriannhunt6326

    Just a quick question. How much fabric did you start off with? I know everyone will be a little different, I am just looking for a starting off point. Thanks!

    • @BreaknRemake
      @BreaknRemake  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THIS IS SUCH A GOOD QUESTION!! Get your math hat and buckle up! After you've measured your waist you need to have double the amount of fabric for a nice gather. You may also want to have a bit extra just in case your fabric shrinks in the wash. So my waist is 47". So here's where we need our math hat: 47x2=94, so we are going to need 94" of fabric. 36" per yard, so 94/36=2.61, so I'll need 2 and a little more than a half yard fabric for this project. I'm gonna round that up to 3 yards. Now you may be able to get your skirt out of less yardage if your fabric is WIDE. And your skirt is length will be LESS than what ever the width your fabric is divided by 2. Whew! Take off your math hat and get a cup of tea/coffee, we did it!
