This lesson on the basics really helped. Thank you Chris. I haven't done any music production since 1998, when my producer was afraid of me going digital, while she wanted to stay analog. I just downloaded CAKEWALK, and wish I had an Ai Chris BOT to sit with, and teach me, but here goes something.
I just subscribed to your channel. I am currently decoding the in and outs of audio interfaces. I have been recording live sound with a Focusrite 2i2. I am shopping for an interface that delivers multitrack into my DAW. My motivation is that I can record drums with maybe four mics. Also run a live performance into PA and in ear monitors. I am a retired teamster driver with zero formal music education. Thanks for your video. I don’t under a lot of the in and out options on the interface. I almost need crayons pictures to figure it out.
Thanks for the video. The setup I need has to have more than 4 audio inputs. Just for beginners most synths and keyboards are all stereo with 2 audio outs. Here we have inputs 2 in front and 2 in back. Synths would use those up. It looks like I'm not going around this without mixer. I think what I need, like 8 inputs on the adapter, would be a lot more expensive. I remember years ago they had some 16 input units. Really steep price. Any suggestions welcome. Bill .
ITS a very good explanation If you will start mixing with Headphones and Monitors , you should know that If you Mix in the Headphones IT can Sound very different in the Studio Monitors The Problem is that the Most audio Interfaces doesnt Support a Headphones Chanel that you can EQ and adjust the Monitors I Mixed an instrumental on my Headphones and IT was totally different The DB Level and also many frequencies IS too different But thats why i was looking for This Video Now i will Check If i can use in of the Outputs wich i can EQ in the Interface to adjust the Sound for the Headphones
Brilliant lesson well done, would I be right in saying that when you described the return from your midi synth should be sent to an audio channel for recording the synth sound otherwise it would be just midi data 🤔
Great informative video. Being 2 years old I’m unsure if my question will get to you. I have an Xvive Wireless IEM. The transmitter is an XLR dongle. I have a S/SDIF to XLR cable. Can I connect my transmitter to the S/PDIF Output and get sound in my IEM’s from the interface?
Hey, Chris. So, you can use an audio interface to set a 5.1 system, just using a DAW, the outputs of an interface and the 5 monitors conected to this outputs? Thank you for the great video.
I bought an old mic amplifier on Ebay. It has a Bogen label on it but I think it was either put on or it has been altered. The only outputs it has are 2 groups of BNC jacks labeled 25 watts. (They look like wordclock jacks)I have never seen BNC jacks used with audio before. I have been buying old and new amps for 40 years. Any idea what they had in mind?
Hi Chris. Great video! Thank you. I have a quick question. I am using the Scarlett 18i8 to connect my Mainstage rig (Mainstage DAW, Impulse midi controller and Yamaha CP88) to our Soundcraft board. I am trying to separate each instrument to a different channel on the board. However, the signal strength is different between outputs 1-2 and 3-4 with 3-4 being much "hotter". Are there audio interfaces with more line-level outputs like 3-4? Thanks again for the great video
Hi. I have an aiwa sound system with line output ( 6ohms) and aiwa mini component with line input ( 4 ohms ). Is it safe to connect it. I just wanted to play both simultaneously. Your response will be highly appreciated.
I want to get the focusrite 2i2 Gen 4. I'll be connecting a guitar and e-drumkit. My friend just got the e-drumkit today, but I'm not sure of the connection as I've not seen it yet. It says on the specs 'Midi'. How would I connect the e-drumkit to the 2i2? Or if the drumkit has usb-c then I can just connect it to my ipad and set the audio to the 2i2? Damn, I wish someone could help me out with this. I've searched endlessly and can't just seem to find an answer to this or someone else doing a similar setup. Help! Thanks!
Very good video. Any suggestions for an affordable interface which has 3 inputs on the back? I have 3 hardware synths to plug in. I like the 4i4 and Motu m4, but they seem to only have room for one synth to plug in the back. Do I really need to buy a huge interface for just 3 synths? I don’t want to use the front to plug anything in.
Dumb question: can I use the line outputs for in ears monitor? So for example, out 9-10 are for the singer in stereo output direct to his in ears system L & R?
Hi Love your channel ! But I can not find anything on how to connect 2 keyboards together (not for recording ) to powered speakers with a internal mixer (I do notwant a separate mixer). Is there any way to connect 2 keyboasrds so they sound together without running 2 line out to a seperate mixer mixer ...in other word can I tie 2 keybords sounding together and have only 1 connection for both signals to my powered speakers mixer . I have 2 channels on each powered speakers .
Hello, I trying to root pedals in my audio interface ur44 ( 2 monitoring out and 4 line out). I listen to a hum when I root my pedal with a line out. Just to be sure, can I connect my speakers on line out 3/4 and use my monitoring out 1/2 for hardware ? Do speakers support line ?
I only want the external audio interface to reduce latency when I am recording with a midi keyboard to a laptop with my daw. but how do i use the laptop speakers and avoid having to hook up external speakers? I want convenience from internal laptop speakers.
Hi there! Great video! I've been wondering what would be the best output level to feed an external headphone amplifier? I have the Focusrite 18i20 and want to use it as my DAC for music listening. The signal shall be sent to an external headphone amplifier as clean as possible. How does one find out, what the optimal output gain setting would be, to pass through the signal as clean as possible? Hoping you can help. Thanks a lot!
Excellent lesson! Is it possible to bypass the DAC in a budget audio interface and use a separate dedicated DAC to do the job while recording, tracking, and overdubbing? For example, could I use the 2i2 to capture the sound (vocals/guitar) and hear the playback in real-time with an ADI-2 DAC fs? Both of these are connected to the computer via USB. Will this work if I select in my DAW input to 2i2 and assign the outputs to ADI-2? Thank you in advance.
Somhere is my situation. If I have a workstation and use it also as a midi controller, can I send all midi data from the workstation(I’m thinking of the Fantom),and instruments connected to it (using midi thru box probably and using the external zones on the Fantom) via a midi or USB in the audio interface into a computer? Obviously I would need a rather big audio interface to handle audio from ca 4 to 5 instruments. Or is it better to have a mixer for the audio and connect midi/usb straight from the workstation into the computer?
Hello, I'm just a beginner. I have a casio ct x5000 with 2 analog mono l/r outputs. I want to buy a interface for recording on devices or laptop. Should I buy a cable that goes from 2 mono jacks to one stereo plug to the interface or use the 2 cables seperate into the interface?
This is great, just what I needed thank you! I need some help clearing things up with terminology. So studio monitors are output devices, but yet take in inputs in the back? What does that make the Scarlett, an input AND output device that takes in both inputs and outputs? I recently said speakers had "outputs" and I was corrected that they had inputs. So just trying to wrap my head around it all lol. Second question: Ableton mentions this in their docs: "AU plug-ins do not support a direct MIDI out. If you wish to route MIDI from a plug-in you need to use the VST version instead.", does that mean if I use AU plugins I can't do your example at 3:25 ? Or is it something else entirely? Could you help explain / clarify? Thanks!
I can't seem to find a straight answer to the question of headphone out to line or mic in. Some say the headphone out can damage line in, some say otherwise. What is the truth? I have pc speakers plugged into the headphone out on my laptop. I want to put an EQ in between. But the EQ has audio line and and out. How do I connect this?
Heyo. Thnx for the explanation! Is it possible to use an interface to send signal „through“? Or is the signal that’s beeing sent to the outs of the interface alsways coming from the computer it’s beeing connected to. I‘d like to send signal from my mixer to my 8track analogue tape recorder for coloration. Then send the outs of the recorder to the inputs of the interface and then use the outs of the interface to route the signal straight back into my mixer. So i can record/ overdub to tape but dont have to constantly change connections when i finally like to record my tracks from tape into my daw through the interface.
I am always confusing with this Audio Interface I/O thing. Is that correct that output 1 is for input 1 and so on? or, every output producing the same audio signal from all input port?
I have a headphone amp, but it only accepts rca. Can I use the output of the interface (it’s balanced I think) to the amp. Is there a balanced to unbalanced cable or it’s not straight forward?
intro literally described me after researching this bs for 3 hours! Im so frustrated MY GOD. THANK GOD FOR YOU
Man! this video makes things so clear! By far the easiest to understand. Keep it up and thanks

Glad it helped :)
Amigo, you are the man. We will be glad to see more videos, please continue doing this kind of tutorials. Greetings.

A big thanks for this. Your explanations are great and the way you convey them is A1. Cheers !
Great video Champ 👍🏾. Your use of graphics to explain the I/O are fantastic. I subscribed to your channel because of your teaching style. Thank you.
Thank you. Was very time consuming to make, lol.
Very clear brother..compared to other tutorials..big thanks bro.its help alot ..as a beginner..
Great video Chris. Easy to understand and info is still valid today. Thanks again for your time and work put into this.
Tank u my brazer!
Your video helped me take serious decisions

My audio interface has 2 "main" outputs and 4 "line" outputs. Which do I use for my studio monitors?
What model is it? I think it will be the main outputs.

Hi how do I connect my interface into my eq,cros and amps
Can i connect mp3 players or hifi players to the line level input?
Is their an interface that uses optical port of a motherboard? Tired of PC static
Thanks man
Thanls :)
A what output to a tape machine?
Omg that opening 😂😂😂
