Going on a bit of a rant… I have a 6th grade daughter that loves volleyball. I don’t know volleyball fundamentals so I’ve been following Coach Donny for about two years, teaching my daughter these fundamentals and she has exponentially gotten better every year. But there girls at our high school varsity level that teach her bad habits and tell her to not do some of these techniques in the mini-clinics they put on. My daughter has actually gotten in trouble for critiquing them for their spiking technique. I tell her to ignore them because that’s why they don’t compete at a high level and don’t make it very far in tourney play. Thank tou Coach Donny

Good on her, sometimes it’s better to go with your own technique compared with the conventional method. Everyone’s body’s are different so there are always different types of approaches to how one plays. Like the good old saying, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

First of all, tell your daughter not to teach others that are both, older and while she’s still also learning. Odds are she still has plenty of poor habits needs to work on herself. On a positive note, lead by example. If she’s doing well, her play will speak for itself. As a coach I can’t stand when I see players teacher each others when they’re in year two or three of learning themselves. As a coach you try to ignore it because you can’t worry about everything happening in your gym but sometimes I need to redirect during warmups when I see it happening. But I don’t call out the players.

    • @aaronfrench2584
      @aaronfrench2584 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@MS-lw4fwyes and no. If your technique is bad. It should be fixed. So you can pass/hit/set/block better. Now… everyone’s body IS different. You can tell a 5’8” block like this… and the person is 6’2” armpits over the net. Good coaches should know what their players are capable of or have the potential of. But bad technique should be addressed.

My daughter is 15 years old, right-handed, & undersized (5'6") for an OH. She's struggling with getting her left arm down near her stomach or her side (almost as if she doesn't have enough time to put it up, then get it down before hitting the ball). She also bends to the left in the air too much. Very similar to what you said about cheating during the wall drill explanation. Please help. Oh, and you should know, you're a hero in our house Coach Donny.

Hey coach Donny, Can you go into further detail about wrist flexion and how to hit with topspin? I've always been complimented on my hitting form but have never been able to consistently hit with topspin. The majority of my spikes are like knuckleballs coming down. I've been practicing getting topspin with roll shots and placing the ball, however once I start jumping and trying to hit the ball harder I seem to lose the ability to get top spin. I constantly try to remind myself to keep a loose wrist, hit on top of the ball and snap down yet still nothing. Do you have any tips, tricks, or practice exercises to help with this? I also tend to find that its easier to get topspin (on the rare occasion I do) when I'm doing sharp angle shots where I'm snapping my wrist more at an angle and hitting the ball not straight on (although while I do get more topspin a lot of the time there is side spin or I guess the ball spinning at an angle where it then curves). Thanks a ton Coach, also keep up the great work love all the videos and the vibes you give. All the effort you put in shows, especially when EVERYBODY who plays volleyball knows of THE COACH DONNY!

I started playing a few months ago and I’ve developed a bad habit with my arm swing. Everyone says it’s looks like I swing like a windmill and I think it’s because I don’t whip my arm. Is there something I could think of while hitting to help correct this? I can do it properly on the ground but once I’m jumping my form falls apart.

Hey, i know this is a month late but when i hit i think of myself as like an archer holding back the string of my bow, it is more so the elbow motion of reaching back and really getting that’s good “stretch” don’t act like ur holding a string when u hit! Also i like to think that the more you think about it the “worse” it can get :) once you get the motions down you’ll get it! also making sure ur body is stable in the air and ur now all over the place. If you’re finding that your body is out of control it may be that you need to strengthen your core to hold your body in the right position or you might be too eager to hit the ball and may be coming in to hot then your body can handle atm. Hope this help

The A team is the best of the best, the B team is the team of people who just lack a few skills but still play decent, and the C team has people who are beginners and are looking to learn volleyball. I was put in the A team at the beggining of the season, but then I was downgraded to the B team. I think it's mainly because I wasn't able to spike very well. His wall exercise. I have all my kids do this if they come in early. When you can stand in front of a wall and keep a consistent cycle of Hit, bounce, wall, back to…Hit. Repeat. You’ll have better contact on the ball, get more reps, feel the difference between a good contact and miss hits. But do NOT get lazy and hit balls down low, elbow low. Restart. Or you’ll pick up a habit of a low elbow arm swing.

  • @vb1gbg

Love the videos. Question: why would bringing the hitting arm back along the path right of the head be better than looping it over the forehead? Seems like looping over the forehead provides more momentum and is a lot more fluid than going straight into a spiker pose in the air. It also seems like hitters spend more time than necessary with their hitting arm back while in the air waiting to get to the ball when bringing it straight back. I've only seen one video on YT showing the looping upswing, but it has helped me get up higher on my hitting.

Hey Coach. Thanks for the tips. How similar is this to a circular arm swing?

(bad english) I'm already used on using Left handed approach but I'm right handed player, I've been playing with my left handed friend to pass time,he introduced me to volleyball and taught me, I can hit the ball on up not causing shoulder pain, in my feeling it's natural and I think I master it, but turns out I'm doing it wrong, what should I do? Fix my footwork or be a left-handed (i feel awkward doing both)

One contact..maybe i missed it...should the hand be relaxed and wide open..or just in general relaxed...

My shoulder hurts sometimes when I’m swinging down, it seems like the harder or faster I swing the more irritation there is. It’s not terrible pain but I can feel something when I’m going from phase 2 to 3 in the spike

I know this video has been out for over a year now so your probably not going to respond but I’ve had an injury with my left shoulders labrum and I’m a right handed hitter I don’t know why but I don’t fully understand the aiming arm like do I aim my hands a certain way, rotate them, when do I tuck it back in, do I even tuck it back in, how far out is it supposed to be, how bent or not bent im just lost.

Hello sir. I’ve been facing a issue that while spiking my spike goes like a float. My arm doesn’t go all the way down. It has led to get the ball out of court. Can u pls make a video related to it like drills exercises to over come it.?

Stop thinking about power or killing the ball. For a month, just focus on the technique. He gave solid tips on positions and arm swing. Follow those and hit at 60% power focusing only on those techniques. Don’t think about hitting Power & Hitting Straight DOWN. Just high contact and follow through with technique. Your hits will improve faster.

Hi Donny, I've heard about doing the reverse s-curve during my arimswing from my coach, but I use a high bow-and-arrow swing (which is what i copied from fran ruiz as a short hitter). Is there any way to incorporate a reverse s-curve into a high bow and-arrow swing?
