I use a leather carving tool (i think it's called a swivel knife) to cut out flame stencils. Works better than anything else I've tried & fairly inexpensive.
Yes I have also used swivel knives. They do work well for cutting smooth curves. I did find them a little more difficult to stay exactly on the sketched out lines vs. and exacto style knife. With practice you can get the exacto knife to twist and create smooth curves. But I agree smooth curves are easier with a swivel knife. Thanks for the comment.
That could work using matte clear coat for the flames over glossy clear coat. You’d have to be careful and really sand the flame area after you mask it off. Then clean it really well. The edges will be fragile where the two kinds of clear coat meet because there is no final top coat over all of it.
88H8ER88 All solvent based paints smell more and are more harmful to breath in. So make sure to wear a good respirator mask that takes out organic fumes. Also set up good ventilation fans. You could also purchase water based airbrush paints. Water based will smell less and are safer but still use a mask. Inspire makes them too although I have not tried it yet. They are sending me some water based Inspire to demo on my website soon.
Hi there, to get the downloadable file go to AirbrushUniversity.com and then click on Video Lessons in the menu. Go to the Free section and scroll through until you see that flame lesson. Under the video there is a link that says “Resources”. It’s by “About”. Click Resources and the download button will show up.
Hi Wayne, you can find it at www.AirbrushUniversity.com. Go to the Lessons link in the menu. Then scroll down to Step 2 section Stencils and Masking and that video is in the PAINT section. The template file to download is at the bottom under RESOURCES right next to the ABOUT tab.
It’s available on the main website. www.AirbrushUniversity.com in the stencils and masking section of video lessons. When you find the video look at the bottom for a Resources tab. Download is there.
Great job ! I have a sheet metal stand behind the paper and I use magnets to hold the stencils and it works great .

Great instructional video! I tried to find the stencil, but it wasn't there, is it still available?
Will it work for doing a matte finish over a glossy finish. No colors just a different sheen

I do not understand why there were holes cut out. Just to be covered by tape. I'm just getting started with air brushing.
It holds the stencil in place
Awesome tutorial man. Is the Inspire airbrush paint ok indoors in moderation? I have a small house and I airbrush in another bedroom. Thanks.
