For a short time I worked in a brake shoe factory here in Canada over 50 years ago when the dangers of asbestos were either unknown or ignored. The processes were more automated and controlled but not all that different. I admire his entrepreneur spirit but I hope he takes his first bit of profit to buy masks or he will be a burden to his family in the coming years. There is something wrong with a supply chain that allows a person to destroy themselves to eke out a living.

I worked with a guy who was in the Navy in the 70s. On his own, he decided to wear a dust mask when mixing up the asbestos plaster that they dipped sections of asbestos cloth in to insulate steam lines. All the old timers laughed at him - "what the hell're ya wearing that dumb mask for, kid?" Now we know.

I remember asbestos was banned from wallboard and plaster after 1980 in the US, though it was still used after that for a period of time. I remember buying relined brake shoes in the 1980's (90's?) that were relined in Canada. Around 2000 they started coming from India, but those usually didn't hold up well. I knew they were being imported due to US worker safety regulations. Public schools and office buildings are still full of asbestos that is sometimes exposed or barely covered and not sealed off. Canada is usually on top of things without too much red tape. I remember Canada banned drinking fountains with cooler tanks, due to possible bacteria growth in them.

@@teestees1115 it's not the asbestos they are burning off, rather the glue holding the asbestos to the shoe.

Basically the same process. Remove the old lining by breaking the rivets. Wash the dirt/grease in a large washing machine. Dip the shoes in a super stinky paint/coating. Attach new linings with rivets. I hope this guy is making a lot more than 5/hour. On a good day I could do ~600 shoes.

We had someone at each station. 1 person would load the large washing machines that would degrease the shoes. He would also use a hydraulic machine with a blade that would scrape the linings off and break the rivets. Another person would take those and load a similar washing machine, but it was a bead blaster to clean the shoes. He would then dip them in the stinky stuff to coat and protect them. Then I and another riviter would add the linings with a stand up rivet machine. Each shoe weighed 12-22lbs. ~600 20lb arm curls a day was quite a workout!

I do appreciate the hard work and his start to finish abilities but what is hard to understand in these videos is a lack of understanding about efficiency in productivity. I mean there’s no clear flow in processing? It’s the same every time in theses videos, drops it in the floor pick it up put it back on the floor pick it up carry it then back on the floor? The concept of getting it off the floor to a table or a conveyer system has not been introduced in this part of the world? No one there has googled modern production processing? Not hating on them just makes my old back and knees hurt watching them. Might be why all our stuff is made in China?

Back in my day's, it's made from asbestos, mixed with metal, mineral and resin. Press the mixture into a mould accordingly. Then proceed to another moulding section, to be heat pressed driven by hydraulic presser. Later on proceed to 'marriage' section of brake lining (asbestos mix) and metal brake shoe. Truck brake shoes need to be riveted and glued together. After coats sprayed and grinding treatment, it's stacked uniformly on trolley and shoved it into this huge electric oven, baked for several hours. Usually in the morning, worker retrieved the product from the oven and proceed to quality check section, it's labeled and stored. Lastly in my section, we would packed, loaded on pallet and shoved in container by forklift.
From the plant entrance onward, beside main office, security, canteen or certain specified sections, we're required to wear face mask, safety boot, gloves (while working) accordingly. Should someone breached the safety requirement, they'll received a warning letter from those 'white' hard hat person (section supervisor) and as a punishment, the offender might not receive full bonus percentage... Safety is the main concern...but this lads...😁

As someone who has installed the add brake shoe or 3 I see several problems. A pile of mixed shoes to be relined that did not seem to be sorted and most brake shoe sets have a leading shoe made from a harder friction material and a secondary show that acts as a chock really.
Very stingy with the bonding agent, not the whole shoe covered, some were lifting before they were painted!
And the shoes are supposed to be radiused not just ground like that.
And the very obvious while I doubt it is asbestos material it will still accumulate in your lungs and eyes when ground like that. Wear a respirator with eye protection.
