Continuing the Clean: Weekly Homeless Encampment Efforts Extend Across Multiple Venice Locations

  • On Thursday, December 7, 2023, a collaborative effort unfolded on Main Street, Brooks Avenue and Ozone Avenue in Venice, where the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. converged to address a homeless encampment with an cleanup operation. Prioritizing safety, the workers wore white hazardous materials suits, in compliance with established safety standards.
The operation was driven by the cooperative efforts of two separate waste management units, each tasked with specific roles. The crew from the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, donning yellow safety vests, collaborated with the Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. team, distinguishable by their orange vests. The Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. team took the initial step of meticulously sorting through debris, isolating hazardous materials like batteries and syringes. Following this essential step, the sanitation personnel from Los Angeles Public Works handled the collection of non-hazardous waste, aiding in the successful completion of the operation.
The endeavor garnered significant backing from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) homeless outreach team, which delivered vital outreach services to those facing homelessness.
Ensuring the safety and compliance of all involved, especially the homeless community, was made possible by the vigilant presence of Los Angeles Police Officers. Their monitoring extended beyond maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards, to ensuring adherence to safety guidelines, securing the operation and ensuring compliance.
Interestingly, even with the enforcement of Ordinance 41.18, which restricts sitting, lying, or sleeping in public spaces, as well as the storage or placement of personal belongings in public rights of way, no citations were handed out during the cleanup at the Venice homeless encampments.
These cleanup actions, like the one in Venice, are part of the City of Los Angeles' wider initiative to address homelessness, although they represent only a small part of a broader strategy. Acknowledging the limitations of such measures, the city's dedication to devising sustainable, long-term solutions remains unwavering. The emphasis is on tackling the root causes of homelessness while offering essential resources to those in need-a well-rounded approach that highlights the city's commitment to effecting lasting change.

I understand and feel bad for the homeless. I truly do. They need help however I am so glad to see that they are really trying to clean up their city. It's so important that the few don't dictate the many. Most of the people in these neighborhoods work and pay taxes to live in a safe , clean and protected area. If you allow it to become a flophouse it ruins it for the people that are trying , not the people who aren't . Mental illness is a real problem, however allowing the homeless to take over communities with their trash, drugs, and uncaring attitude will only deteriorate society. They need help but so do the people that live there.

Why do they put shopping carts in the trash truck and crush them? They belong to stores, they are stolen, Even if the plastic handle with the store name is gone, There is a number stamped on metal above one of the wheels.

No one deserves to be able to take over a city like this . I can tell you some of these people think this is really OK that they can do this. Much easier than going out straighten yourself up and get it a job. They had rather live on the streets for there they don’t have to work they don’t have to do anything, but lay around by drugs and trash up the city. This is a sad country right now.

  • @brendabenefield8186

Go to a shelter. What’s so hard about that. If you don’t go, that is your own fault and you’re not willing to sacrifice what it may take to get yourself straightened out just like every human being in the United States does not have a easy life they all are not rich they all maybe don’t have everything they need but they go to work every day they have a home. it all takes sacrifice in some form. This world is not here to give you and out because you decide you do not want to conform to any rules or any discipline, and the world is made at a route and discipline and ethics.

There are so many mission workers there, asking them to let them help them. Let them give you food clothing a house over a roof over your head will help you find a job. Who knows it might not be the best place the nicest place but it’s a start, because you have to pay the consequences when you choose the wrong things in your life.

They do have shelters! The mission is in skid row, they even have showers and washers n dryers! But they have rules!! They lock up at 10pm. An can’t do drugs n the shelter! The homeless DO NOT LIKE RULES. That’s why they don’t use what’s being provided for them. The mission also provides meals. The homeless bitch cuz they gotta pay 3:50/day to eat. But they can butter cigarettes and drugs. Pisses me off they get a free ck. , medical card(which they don’t use)! Make it make sense! Stop all the NON PROFITS too, there making it worse!!

They have these mission home people that come around and tell them they’re there to help them. They have a place going to go place phone to sleep a place for them to have food and help them get on their feet and get a job. And they will turn and walk away from that help because obviously they enjoy this lifestyle and this is why we have to keep pressing on and showing. they cannot live in the city this one. This is not their home you can’t just trash is Siri because you’re on drugs and you don’t wanna get off the drugs and you don’t want to go to work. And then do you think it’s OK if you come and trash at all the cities with all your garbage. I’m sorry I do feel for you. I know it’s hard I know it’s hard but I also know that there are mini mini. After that just thinks that they’re owed this lifestyle and I can tear up any city in with all the garbage and fill them. Something has to be done.
